Being a vegetarian, this restaurant remains the only place I know of in all of Sonoma County where I can get Tempeh. Add to that that it is well-prepared tempeh, and life is grand! Have eaten here tons of times, and will continue to eat here. Bummed they had to raise their prices a bit, but it still makes for a reasonable lunch. Love the free wi-fi. The children's corner has some really filthy broken toys, so took away a star for that, and the fact that there isn't a reasonable children's menu. The price is the same as the adult menu, and the same serving size (gigantic portion to serve to a toddler). Also, they aren't very good at tofu. The tempeh rueben is wonderful, but the tofu has been hit or miss soggy. If you are an avid tofu eater, you will be disappointed. Still gets 4 starts for helpful staff, the fact that you seat yourself so its fast in and out, and vegan soups! read more

Came here to get brunch and it wasn't great. The food is frozen and then cooked which can be expected for a place with a menu so large. My friend's chicken dry and rubbery. My chicken fried steak tasted like a TV dinner. And it probably wouldn't have bothered me too much if I didn't pay $15 for my meal. Their fried eggs are good. We were on our way to our traditional Sunday brunch at Marvin's in Cotati when we decided to try someplace new and pulled into the Redwood Cafe in downtown Cotati. The cafe has a large menu of offerings including breakfast fare, sandwiches, and entrees. Many of the items were vegetarian but not sure how many, if any, were vegan. The restaurant is organized cafeteria style, you order and pay at the counter and they bring your order to your table. The environment is family and kid friendly. No one seemed uptight with a noisy baby in the house. And several singles sat with their laptop taking advantage of the free WiFi. The seating out front is a great way to people watch in Cotati, which is prime people watching territory. The menu was so broad, I had trouble deciding what to order, finally settling on the Fish and Chips. The Mrs ordered the stir fried chicken. We tried a cup of split pea soup, it was not bad but too bland and not thick enough for my taste. The fish was good, with props for the quality of the fish. The batter was a little oily but the homemade tartar sauce was very good and covered up the oil taste. The Stir Fry was very good, with a great balance of flavors and just enough sauce to enhance the overall flavor but not enough to drown out the flavor of the ingredients. The food was served pretty quickly and the staff was friendly. Although it won't replace Marvin's as our goto Sunday brunch place, we will try it again. read more

I live in Penngrove, and Redwood Cafe has been there for years, although I hadn't been in there for a few. SOO glad I did today!! Ordering is simple and quick, you take your beverage and number and pick your table....I picked near the fireplace. The bakery goods were SOOO delicious looking! I managed to get past them and as I looked at the menu, the Cajun scramble hit me! It was perfect! It came with the perfect comfort food.... potatoes! The nachos didn't come with cheese, if nachos don't come with cheese you should say so on the menu. Salad had huge hunks of feta (not crumbled) and uneven pieces of canned beets. Nuts not toasted. Check out the Eggs Blackstone, a favorite of mine. Some local brews on tap and a fireplace make this an OK place to grade papers in winter. Can get a bit noisy, as the hard surfaces can make for harsh acoustics. Prices can get a smidgen high for the range of choices, but I've seen worse. Good place when you're in the mood for it, but definitely not when you feel tired or overextended. For locals, a well known landmark. ( I consider caffeine a daily vitamin) Veg-friendly and a cozy fire to sit by! I have been here several times. This place seems to be pretty popular. The staff is super friendly and know what they are serving. It is nice and open and has plenty of seating. This was our dry haven when we went to a rained out graduation down the street last year. I got the worst "grilled marinated tofu" sandwich here, it had no taste. However, their tempeh sandwich is bomb! So good! They also have some delicious fried foods and hot beverages. We come here often and very much enjoyed the service we have gotten in the past. Today we had a larger young Mexican girl who was wearing an apple air pod in and a red shit on. We ordered smoothies as we always do and they came out very watery and tasted like the banana they used in the smoothie was not ripe. We asked her to remake it, and she said she was going to use the same banana! The banana was the problem. She brought out our smoothies that tasted the exact same of course. Redwood's menu is usually so reliable in tasting delicious, and today it was overpriced for what it was-- extremely bland food. My huevos rancheros must've had rice made a few days ago because it was hard and did not taste fresh. The eggs were scrambled and not over easy and they were completely unseasoned. 5 mozzarella sticks for $10. We spent $50 total on brunch today because we were confident in Redwoods ability to deliver a delicious meal. However, we will not be returning. Really disappointing. read more

This place is great for breakfast on a Sunday morning. I like to sit next to the fireplace. There is a pretty big selection of stuff on the menu: everything from falafel to pasta to burritos (and a wide choice of typical and not so typical American diner style fare). Sometimes (not too often) there are off days where maybe the cook is tired or someone new is there and the food isn't quite as good. It's never been particularly "bad" though. read more

It's just okay here. I'll give them this - they have a lot of variety on their menu and as vegetarians, there are a lot of options for us. But, the food is bland and overpriced. They might do better narrowing the menu down to items they do really well rather than doing a lot, but poorly. My kids do enjoy playing with their toys which is great except then I can't get them to eat. I'd give this place 2 1/2 stars if that were an option. read more

I recently went here for dinner a couple of nights ago with my brothers. The ambiance is quite warm and welcoming. Plus, they've even got a fireplace, which really adds to the ambiance factor. The service is OK, not bad or good, just OK. It's all the same and all fine. But the people that actually serve the food are pretty nice. The food is good, but nothing really amazing. I ordered the fish & chips. The fish was good and great quality, but the french fries were a bit thick and salty. It was still pretty good food none then less. The outdoor seating area/patio is the best in Cotati. It's enclosed and above the sidewalk, so the atmosphere feels more private and cozy than any other establishment in town. I dined here with my mom a few times semi-recently and we both appreciated the quality and availability of vegetarian/vegan dishes. The hummus wrap is one of the best I've had in a long time; the only thing missing in my opinion is red onion. If I dine here again I'll have to remember to ask for it. I wish more of their soups were vegan i.e. the butternut squash soup. Overall, I would recommend this place to not only vegans and vegetarians but also omnivores. Very vegetarian friendly. They have breakfast, brunch and dinner vegetarian sections on their menus, lots of options! I had the Tofu Melt. It's pretty good. Basic grilled cheese on white bread but with 2 slices of tofu in there and grilled tomato. The fries are just basic thin fries. I asked about the pastries at the counter but the girl had no clue if there was lard in them and since there was a line I wasn't about to ask her to find out. Then I asked about a cake and she seemed to think I didn't want butter either? I guess she thought I was vegan because of the lard question. At any rate felt too much pressure from the line to even bother anymore. The wait in line was long and it's because the register girl has to answer questions and get the pastry orders.
