Scott, the owner of this yogurt shop, definitely makes the atmosphere a family experience. He isn't afraid of toddlers or teenagers alike making themselves at home on the giant sofa or the old piano tucked into the corner. This past summer when we would frequent the shop (maybe, daily) there was a boy playing the piano every day to save money for a summer trip. The only reason he took any breaks at all, was because the other businesses around requested a break in the playing. Scott seemed more than patient in this case, and in so many others. The sense of community that you feel by stepping into the shop is really unparallel in any other businesses I have been to. --Scott knows my whole family, names and all, even though we aren't from the area. The guy who runs this place is a baus. It's great frozen yogurt, in dishes or hand-rolled waffle cones, for reasonable prices. There are only ever 4 flavors to choose from but they are usually good ones. There are also shakes, but other than that it's a very simple establishment that mostly consists of space to hang out and eat your froyo. read more

I like to go to Arcata Scoops if I am going to buy something cold and tasty, but when Redwood Yogurt is right next-door to Japhy's, whaddamy gonna do? ;) I like that the waffle cones are made in the store, smells nice, sometimes a little warm still. The best frozen yogurt I've ever had! There are daily specials, my favorite being 'almond joy' a mix of chocolate and coconut yogurt covered in slivered almonds. The fresh peach yogurt and pumpkin pie yogurt are also fantastic. The owner pours the batter into a waffle iron right in front of you, and you can have your cone as soft or crispy as you like! I was a longtime customer who frequently came in with my service dog. One day I stopped by for some yogurt and the manager flat out told me I had to leave because my "dog might bite somebody" (even though the dog had never shown any prior aggression, at Redwood Yogurt or otherwise) and refused to hear any more (like how his actions were illegal and my dog is specially trained to mitigate my severe disability). You will not find better frozen yogurt anywhere, I promise you. They make their own and they make their waffle cones too, right there, you can watch them! They are just sweet enough and sometimes they're still warm and they are just perfect. The guy who I assume owns the place is really nice though he sometimes gets a bit flustered when he gets really busy. But he's fast! The Chai Chiller (it's called something like that) is fantastic & I always have a hard time choosing between it & strawberry in a waffle cone with white chips. My friends go crazy when the pumpkin yogurt comes out during the holiday season, but I haven't been able to tear myself away from my two favorites to try it. I'm already torn enough as it is! Waffle cones are I think $2.50 & it's $0.50 for toppings or something around there - worth every penny! They also have different kinds of coffee but I don't drink coffee so I can't say anything about that. There's a piano & in my experience a third of the time it's open, a third of the time there's someone decent on it and a third of the time there's some dumb kid just pounding & being obnoxious. Their parents usually have mercy & pull them off pretty quickly, though. Other than that little bit it's a pleasant place to sit and look out the windows or at the art on the walls. You can get almond milk frozen yogurt here! It's the best. There are many ice cream stores in Humboldt County, and this is my favorite. It's local and quirky and delicious. Last night we called at 8:30 PM to see when they closed, and the answer was "oh, maybe 15 more minutes." I love that! They accept credit card too, which is a plus. When they didn't, I went in without cash, got my ice cream and realized I couldn't pay - the owner said, just come back later. I don't think you'd find that at a chain! :) YUM! read more
