Excellent communication, good prices, and good communication. He is a master at his craft, with 40 years of experience. It seems he is a one man shop so you won't get some rookie technician that will fumble around and not know what is going on. Yes, the fee is $95 to come out but in many cases the fix is relatively quick making the total price competitive or better than many of the other 5 star rated reviews on yelp. He does not overcharge for parts (e.g., he will not charge over $100 for a $4.55 part, see next paragraph). To give you an example, I had actually called one of the higher ranked 5 star rated appliance repair companies based in Oakland and they wanted a $59 service charge applicable to labor and materials, sent out a newbie technician, and for labor they wanted $200 and the part $120 (PM me if you want to know who they were)--I thought the price was too high so paid the $59 "diagnosis fee". Mr. Kim charged $175 total for this exact repair, that's $145 less. Also, that recent one star review complaining about the service charge and labor charge is not fair in my opinion because that is disclosed very clearly up front and if you don't like it you don't have to accept. But if you want a master technician that knows what he is doing, won't overcharge you on labor and materials, and gets the job done right I would highly recommend him. I am a landlord and will definitely use him again in the future. read more

I'm honestly shocked at the way Mr. Kim spoke with me. I called yesterday and spoke with a nice lady who told me he'd come out and take a look and I let her know I'm a renter working with my landlord's budget and can't afford a diagnostic fee if work isn't done. I asked if there was a fee to come out and she said, "no we can take care of it." He came out to take a look at my refrigerator and kindly said there's no use fixing it because it would be over the allotted budget and then asked for $120 for the 15 minutes he was here. Confused, I nicely told him what the lady on the phone had said to me and asked him if he could work something out because I am using my landlord's budget but don't want to not pay if it was his understanding he'd get a fee and the lady misspoke. I was absolutely kind in my tone but he immediately became extremely rude and snapped "then just don't pay." I offered to write a smaller check for the misunderstanding which I would take out of my own money because I didn't want to devalue his work and had spoke with someone else who may have been misinformed. He told me, "do you think I have to beg for $50" and scoffed at me. I told him I wasn't trying to be rude and just wrote the $120 check out of guilt despite it not being my fault and him not fixing anything. I've never in my life had anyone come at me like that over a misunderstanding. I hope others have a better experience but this was truly wild. read more

Called Mr. Kim for a stove repair. He was able to schedule an appointment for the same day. He was pleasant and business-like. He worked efficiently, identified the problem part, explained clearly what the problem was, and replaced it, in less than an hour. The price was quite reasonable. He left everything in order. We had used him some years ago for a refrigerator problem, but decided to get a second opinion due to the cost and some skepticism about his diagnosis. He proved to be exactly right the last time, which is why we called him this time. He knows what he is doing, and he does it efficiently. I was told by PG&E that I had a gas leak and my stove did not have a shut off valve for the gas. The rep turned off my gas and informed me that I would need to call someone to fix the problem. Being a recent homeowner I was afraid, thinking that my situation would be costly; moreover, I enjoy cooking and would not be able to cook until my problem was resolved. He was prompt at the 8:00 am. appointment; quickly took off the cover and saw that the water pump was leaking. He had a new pump and replaced it and also resolve a minor starter issue. I can't say that I'm impressed by the services received from this repair company. In particular, I found the serviceperson argumentative, judgemental, curt, ineffective, impatient, and, finally, rude. Sadly, Kim's appliance has a contract with my apartment building, 315 Park View Terrace, which results in all repair requests going to them, so I do not have the liberty to get a second opinion about matters. The most recent interaction was with our refrigerator doors popping open randomly throughout the day, resulting in us losing food since we moved in. We tried to adjust our habits and put less in the fridge and freezer, but we still have it opening randomly throughout the day. Frustrated and at our wit's end, we opened a ticket with our apartment management company, who dispatched Kim's Appliance. Upon arrival, they were already perturbed, demanding I describe the problem. After describing the issue, mind you, I work from home, so I just happened to be there, AND in the middle of the meeting, however, the service person kept yelling for my attention to show me the random things that he was doing like trying to pull the door open, claiming that it was closing well, and removing random items from the fridge, and claiming that it was again, closing well. The service person, ignoring that we opened our ticket on both doors open, then decided that we had too much food in the fridge after removing a canister from the compartment, ignoring the freezer door in the process. When I told the service person that the door opening wasn't forced and that his test doesn't include the freezer, he said that "he wasn't trying to argue." When I tried again to explain our problem with both doors, he walked out of the apartment while I spoke. What a disappointing and frustrating human interaction. CONSUMER BEWARE! This man charges $89.00 for the first ten minutes!!!!! and $10 for an additional 10 minutes. He says he does this because " he is very fast". I manage over 60 apartment units in 6 different apartment buildings and gotten all my contractors/vendors from Yelp and have been 120% satisfied. For this guy to charge $89 for ten minutes is absolutely ludicrous. To top things off, he tried to get an extra $10 or ten minutes out of me saying he is only charging me for 30 minutes even "though he was there for 40 minutes". Sorry Mr. Kim, the intercom that I buzzed you in shows 30 minutes exactly on my phone when you called. There is a 100% proof right there for you. Thank goodness I he did not have to come back for parts. That would be additional $89 just to walk from the door up to the building to the third floor. I am against giving negative reviews, especially to hard working mom and pop companies but people deserve to know they can get the same service for 1/2 of the price. $89 for ten minutes is the worst I have ever seen in the service industry. read more

I know of a few other repair people that have not had any issues with our machines, but the conditions just were not right for Mr. Kim. This guy was uninformed AND cost us $75 for nothing. I read the positive reviews and was willing to pay for the $89/10 minute deal because he was the first available and my impression was that he would do a good, quick job. However, he came out to our house, took the top off our front-loading washer which had a problem with its door and said it would take him 3 hours + $100 for the part. If we had gone ahead with Mr. Kim it would have cost close to $400. He recognized that was expensive and recommended we simply buy a new washer for $700 or so, and pay him $75 for his 20 minutes or so of time. He gave us a discount for his "advice." I paid him his $75, but decided to have Sears come out and fix it. It took them 20 minutes (vs. Mr. Kim's 3 hours), the part cost $50 (vs. Mr. Kim's $100), and the repair did not require taking the top off the washer. All in to Sears was $180 (they have a flat $129 fee regardless of how long it takes). I should have just had Sears come out in the first place. Mr. Kim's bad advice will make me avoid him at all costs in the future. read more

I will NEVER ever call anyone else! I waited FOUR hours for S***s to assist with my dishwasher repair....I had to leave at 5. S***s repair showed up at 4:30 p.m. Mr. Kim is at your house within 15 minutes of your appointment (and his wife will call if he is 15 minutes late!) I called him to fix my dryer. He discovered it was just a blown fuse--not with the other fuses because of 220/110... Since he would have to charge me the minimum for a service call, he proceeded to show me what I could do to make my appliance work better. He saved me from getting a new refrigerator when the thermostat went out. A lot of the time he has the parts you need on his truck.. He does good work AND I TRUST him! read more

I had a positive experience with Mr. Kim. He was very nice, efficient, and explained the problem clearly. His fee for making a service call seems fair to me. And he deducts it from the cost of the repair. Mr. Kim was also good about follow up regarding parts. The reason I didn't give him 5 stars was that he showed up early, which was a bit inconvenient. I would have preferred a call beforehand to ask me if it was ok to arrive before our scheduled appointment, because, like the previous reviewer CC W., I was working from home and it was not an ideal time for an interruption.
