It was me, my 2 kids and my sister and her 2 kids. There was another couple with their kid, so the place wasn't packed. We got food at the concession stand and were chillin at the tables with our kids. After eating, our kids had a sugar rush and decided to race up and down where the tables were. We figured since the place was vacant it was totally fine given that it's an arcade and kids typically run around there anyways. My sister took the kids up to get prizes after they were done playing games and overheard one of the employees talking bad about us, pointing my sister out to one of his coworkers saying how we just let our kids run around. I'm sorry, but if that was such a big issue we could've had an employee approach us and told us nicely that it wasn't okay. we were there January 6th, the employee that was talking about to us was a bigger dude with blonde curly hair pretty sure his name tag was Riley and he was talking to his coworker who was a girl wearing a green sweater. If they don't like kids being crazy running around then you probably should not be working in a place where the customer base is mostly kids. It definitely makes me not feel welcomed with my kids and makes me not want to come back anymore.

After talking with the owner and one of his good friends it was a customer that like hanging around I realize that he has been a huge part of the local magic community for probably longer than I've been alive. So, in that case it's not a new venture, but instead one cemented into the culture, trying to save a once thriving mall. He demo'd a bunch of tricks and addressed some previous magic tricks we had seen over the years. We got a few 'joke scratch offs' and repeaked my interest in flash paper and cotton... even purchase some upcoming tickets to a future Magic show... I am not sure how anything is going to survive in the Lloyd Center these days but I really hope it comes back because I really used to enjoy the Lloyd Center and the ice rink in the mall filled with shops... When I found out there would be entertainment before the movie I had to sit down. It was just too exciting. I picked up tickets for the uncles and me a couple days in advanced. No way was I missing this. We got there on the early side before doors, and, as only a man on stilts and some scantily dressed chicks were outside the theater, we decided to go and spend some time in the small Powell's across the street. By the time we got back, both the ticket holder line and the ticketless line were both long. The electricity was palpable; everyone was excited. Looking forward to the events ahead, the line seemed to move quickly. The Bagdad is the perfect venue for this kind of thing. I give them serious kudos for that. Unfortunately, they don't serve the promised champagne, just wine. I like wine and all (understatement), but I was looking forward to some bubbly. We were all settled, poised for the show to begin, when all of a sudden we hear someone shouting. We look around and see a dude in a very artsy, ringmasteresque getup. Then we hear another voice, this time a woman's. We look and see a woman dressed in a teddy. They both spoke in, well, Theatrical accents. You know, the country of Theatre? The one where many a high school student defects to? It's not British, it's just over the top and extremely obnoxious. Finally the tete-a-tete between the two hosts stopped. Hey, they thought they were amusing. Then the four person burlesque show began. As neither my uncles nor I are in to chicks, just showing bare patches of skin doesn't cut it. It has to be a good show. It has to be entertaining. The performers have to look like they are not hostages told to put on a show for their captors. I felt bad watching them. I felt like an enabler. Not soon enough, they left the stage. The hosts came back. Again, anything but funny. (I can't remember the sequence of the following vignettes, but stick with it) The two competitions were entertaining. The cancan was fun. The dude who won was hilarious. Why couldn't he have hosted the night? The costume contest was great as well. Some people really dressed to the nines. I don't know what was up to that one person who dressed up in the animal-ish costume. Was that an Obama mask? The circus show -- a lion tamer and three 'lions' was awesome. The man and two women did all these acrobatics but retained a catlike quality throughout. It was the one part of the night that I could have seen gone on a bit longer. At last it was movie time. I was all ready to get my sing on. There was a slight hiccup where the movie had to restart, but it was all good. How could it not be? It's Moulin Rouge for crying out loud. The problem with serving alcohol is this: Soon the hecklers come out in full force. Sure the entire program sounded cool, but the unks and I were there for the movie. By the end, the people around us were so loud we just couldn't pay attention to the movie. It was just so annoying, so infuriating. We all left disappointed, to put it mildly.

It's one of my man friend's "top 5 movies of all time" so I surprised him by taking him there. Since it was Valentine's Day, I splurged and got the VIP pass - $25 for 2 admission tickets, a bottle of bubbly and some chocolate covered strawberries. Some constructive criticism. It would have been fantastic if we could have purchased our tickets in advance. I understand that they might not want to do that for the general admission tickets, but it would be great if it was an option for the pricier seats. I also felt like there was some disorganization in getting people their goodies or getting a sensible line formed. We hope to attend more of these random events in the future.

The thrilled part came in when I was strolling through the Historic Troutdale District and started practically tripping over his life size wildlife statues. But, it wasn't random. Turns out the gallery relocated just a few blocks from the original location, so you can still see his fine work. The disappointment part is that the current gallery space, which the staff calls transitional, just doesn't showcase his grand work to the same degree. The gallery is probably 1/8th of the former size and can't accommodate some of the larger pieces. Half of the space is the artist's studio where he both creates his statues and offers classes to the public. The gallery contains just a small portion of his work and also houses exhibits by other artists in various mediums (sculpture, photography). Caswell's current subject matter, based on a series of special commissions, is also overtly religious. Not everyone's cup of tea or chalise of wine. While I will still visit the gallery when I'm in Troutdale, it won't be as frequent and no longer merits a special trip. The Columbia Gorge itself is the real wow factor.

Great place to taste some wine and check out some amazing art. Everyone is extremely friendly and welcoming. The art ranges from Rip's spectacular bronze sculptures to Ali's beautiful one-of-a-kind jewelry to various photographs, paintings, bells and glasswork. It's all bigger and better than anything I've seen in a long time. I understand this place has a First Friday artwalk, plus other art/wine/food events, so we'll be back here soon for sure.
