I started looking for agents on the internet. You would think that being one of the top-5 biggest cities in the US, Chicago is an easy city to find an agent in. WRONG! Every agent I called turned out to be a either a douchebag who "did not do rentals" or an asshole who "had nothing in my price range". After a few hours of looking for an agent, I was convinced that I will end up having to rely on outdated Trulia data and take my chances with open houses during our 1-day house-hunting trip. I ended up cursing at myself, Chicago, and all its real-estate agents and did what I typically do when I want to cool down: filled a bowl with plain yoghurt and took it to my bed to eat in peace. After devouring the first spoon of plain yoghurt, I came across Stephen's number on Yelp. I was pessimistic, but that one spoon had un-pissed me enough to give another agent a chance, so, I said, what the heck, I'll call this one too. Now, this was a cold depressing Sunday afternoon, so, nothing could really cheer me up and I wasn't expecting anyone to answer anyways. Still I called anyways. He answered the phone asking me the exact kind of questions I was expecting "how close do you want to be to the loop?", "how do you feel about spending $100 more to get a place that's closer". He then took time to explain to me how real-estate market works in Chicago (it is VERY different than Boston and San Francisco!). We exchanged emails and he put us through the smoothest apartment-hunting experience anyone in continental US has experienced.

After our introductions Alexandra provided efficient and fast service that I did not get from the other 4 agents I was working with trying to move here to Chicago. I did tell her i was running out of time and needed to move within the next week, the quality of options and the variety if options was exactly what I needed to see as I was getting stressed with the whole "moving in the summer to Chicago". She was very transparent and when we were dealing with difficult realtors she was not hesitant on reaching out for me to find out what the hold up was on their end to really get me in a place that I was interested in. Alexandra would send me morning texts to check on statuses if I was getting emails replied and getting in touch with the home owners. She did a really amazing job delegating my stress and communication with everyone I needed to all the way until i was officially moved in. At times I felt i was probably annoying her and I apologized for being antsy and she told me that everything was ok and that there was no need for me to apologize. Her goal was set to get me through this process as smooth as she can make it for me.. I will be sending all my friends her way and i will not use another agent as long as I live here in chicago!

Recently, my sons lease was coming up and he needed to find a new place. My son is very busy traveling for his job, so since the clock was ticking...rapidly, we made a decision to go back to Beth at Chicago Apartments and Condos for her expertise. While he was out of the country, I contacted Beth from California and she went on the hunt. Upon my sons return she took him out and showed him several places... knowing that he had approximately 7 days to find a place, get approved, sign his lease and move in...was quite stressful, however, Beth worked with him, listened to his 'wants' and 'needs' and found him an awesome apartment. Over the rest of the weekend she worked on all of the paperwork and was able to turn a 7 day process into a ONE (1) day process. She is truly amazing...and all of her co-workers really work as a team in helping out each other and their clients. I would definitely recommend using the expertise and dedication that they give each and every client, no matter what the clients 'needs' are. They go above and beyond what anyone would expect...and there is absolutely NO FEE...unbelievable.

I email them at 7:30pm requesting to see a unit they listed on Craigslist. Emily responds quickly…read moresuggesting I see it at 1pm the following day. The following morning, when I confirm the time, they tell me the unit rented the previous evening, and that because I didn't respond faster, they assumed I wasn't going to confirm. No mention whatsoever of the fact that they were showing the apartment that evening (I live about 5 houses away from it so could have been there in 2 minutes) or that it was being looked at all, or of the fact that it was rented, and that I shouldn't count on the time the agent suggested. I try to call to figure out what happened - Emily (presumably unknowingly) hangs up on me. I try to call again, and go to voicemail. I try to call the office - nobody picks up. Who knows. Apparently, people have had good experiences with them about which they have posted. As for me, I'm still reeling in bewilderment at the whatever just happened. All seems strange to me.

My experience with JAB Real Estate was frustrating, primarily due to poor communication. As my…read morelease was ending, I reached out multiple times regarding my move-out date and related details, but received very few responses despite repeated attempts to contact them. What made the situation even more frustrating was receiving an email requesting rent payment for the month after my lease had already ended and after I had fully moved out of the property. This issue could have been avoided with clearer communication and better attention to tenant correspondence. I understand that mistakes can happen, but timely responses and accurate account management are important, especially during the move-out process. Unfortunately, this experience left me disappointed.

Please see the end of this, to see how terrible the owner of the company can be to work with. In the field of real estate, you need to be willing to answer questions about a lease, and about move in conditions.. without losing it on your clients. It's YOUR JOB! My husband and I have happily lived in an owner- rented high rise, and have always been praised for being such easy tenants to work with. When we told the new owner of our condo (it was recently sold), that we were leaving, she said she would have loved to continue to work with us, as we seemed like the "easiest tenants ever". My husband and I were excited to rent an apartment in the Southport area, and everything was a done deal (including a $1900 security deposit already paid) except signing. When we arrived to sign, we had our checkbooks ready to go. As the owner of this company was presenting the lease to us, we stopped to ask what I felt were normal questions: 1.) What is the application fee going towards? It was 250 +50, per person (600 bucks), plus the 1900 we had put forward, so we were curious. He mentioned something about covering his fees, for out of state lease signers (we reminded him we are in state), and since it seemed this was non negotiable, we of course moved on (we anticipated paying these...hence our check books.) 2.) He mentioned the typical Chicago law of notifying us that they don't know of lead paint in the unit. I said, "Oh, so do you check for lead paint?" To which he responded, something along the lines of, no, but we know there isn't any. Again, we said, ok no problem. 3.) The owner then notified us that they would be completely repainting the unit. We asked if we could pick the color, and he said yes, but that we would have to pay for the complete cost of that paint. I asked, "Since you were going to paint the unit anyways, can we split the difference in price? And we are happy to pick up the paint." He didn't really have an answer that made us feel listened to, so my husband chimed in with "We are just putting a lot of money up front" ($2500 mind you),"and this is all we have really asked for in return." With that the owner stood up, very rudely ripped up our lease, and told us to GET OUT. We had to ask "are you kidding?", because the conversation seemed to go from a calm one, to a burst of rage in 2 seconds flat. We were in shock, and couldn't believe someone would treat their clients, or any human being this way. He felt he had the luxury of easily finding new tenants, in this highly competitive rental world, which made him entitled to treat another adult person in this highly unprofessional way. I feel like he was cornered without good answers to our questions. With 100% confidence, I can say that had he said no to the paint, we would have said ok, paid for it all, and just signed the lease (just as we had moved forward with the other questions we had). A simple no would have sufficed, but he decided to take it to an entirely different level of unprofessionalism. We could understand if he said "it is what it is, sign it or don't." And we would have. But instead he told us "you think you are special and I can't work with people like that." I don't think we are special at all, rather we had a question (which may I mention past landlords have all been MORE than ok with.) Thank goodness, this was a blessing in disguise. We found a WAY more beautiful and spacious place, with an amazing landlord, who hand picked us from 5 couples because we seemed the "easiest to work with." Too bad for JAB, they lost some amazing long term tenants. Be careful if you go in to sign a lease, heaven for bid you ask a question, you may leave without a future home.
