One thing I love about REI is the membership. The benefit of being able to return almost anything within a year of purchase is really awesome, helpful, and convenient. With the membership, you also get 10% back on eligible items and free shipping with no minimum order. The downside I've found with REI, is that over the years REI has switched to selling more REI branded items instead of all of the other cool brands they used to offer. Unfortunately I needed to return a bike rack. I was so bummed because I was planning on bringing my bike on a trip to upper Wisconsin. I decided to return it to the store on the way up north. The return was hassle free and the customer service rep was understanding and helpful. I asked for the $30 shipping charge back since the advertising was a bit unclear. The manager refunded the shipping charge and a $40 credit for inconvenience. Luckily there was a last year model bike rack that I was able to pick up while there. These transactions should outstanding customer service. Thank you REI management. The store layout is easy to walk around. There were plenty of terrific sales, that I didn't get to take my time going through because of my schedule. However, I will be back. If you love the outdoors, you'll love this store. read more

Found the socks I wanted: 1 star. Quick and pleasant check out experience: 2nd star. Hiking or trail running shoes: zero stars. After waiting 10 minutes to get a clerk's attention, we got a mini-lecture about hours we should have waited outside the ropes before entering the area. The thing is that there were no routes up 10 minutes earlier when we walked in. Then when I asked to see two styles in a 10 or 10.5, I was told they'd need to measure my foot. Fine with me, but then they brought out size 10 and they were too small. A third try resulted in a shoe that was the right length, but tight in the front and too loose in the heel. In many respects this would not have been a deal breaker, but the combination of put upon and pedantic was a bit much. Went elsewhere for a relaxed and helpful experience. read more

REI is a national, big-box style outdoors chain that has no hunting or fishing equipment, but is focused on camping, biking, paddling, etc. They are a co-op, so you buy into the plan for a small one-time fee and get a percentage of your full price purchases credited back to you at the end of the year. The best time to shop is when they have member sales, dividend sales, and end of season clearances because they are fairly expensive (mostly because they sell higher end name brands like Patagonia, North Face, Chaco, Keen, etc). Ok, enough about who REI is..now onto this location. I've been going to the Brookfield location for years, and have always been satisfied. It is not the biggest REI I've been to, but it is nice and well-stocked. They usually have what I am looking for in stock. The staff is always friendly and helpful, which is an REI quality that keeps me coming back. Also, they practice what they preach. While I have never met a person who has climbed Kilimanjaro, the clerk was telling me not to wear blue there because of the flies that are attracted to it. My guides haven't even warned me about that. It is precisely this sort of knowledge, help, and friendly conversation that keeps me coming back. side note..it is kind of a pain to go here during covid as you have to wear a mask (like everywhere), but they are counting people walking in and out, then are limiting people in the footwear department, so you could be waiting in multiple lines. REI states they have a 100% guarantee of 1 year for members and I have been purchasing hiking boots at this location for 5+ years and have only had to return one pair of boots. I purchased la sportiva Nucleo and they are the worst hiking boot I have purchased. They have terrible ankle support, and the bottoms blew out after 6 months of use. I brought them back to REI where the counter rep and manager stated the shoes were used and worn and so they would not take back. This is against their policy of 100% percent satisfaction guarantee, and they were not kind during the attempted return. I will not bring business back to REI for hiking or camping in the future unless the situation is righted by corporate but not back to this store location read more

I went to go try on shoes today. So yes they only have 1 person working but I didn't not get any acknowledgement from the shoe person at all. Basically I was ignored and they pretended I wasn't waiting for 15 min. They obviously had a another person trying shoes on but at the same time a gesture of I'll be with you shortly or acklidwdging that I've been waiting would have been helpful. Being from Hawaii, going to REI is always a special treat. We try to go to REI when we are traveling outside of Hawaii. We stopped by this REI because I needed some good gloves for the cold weather that we are not used to. I wanted to get North Face gloves and REI had the ones that I wanted. The workers here were so nice and pleasant. The only thing I regret was there was a Patagonia jacket that they had but I didn't buy it. I'm so bummed about it and it's sold out online. Is it too soon to say I'm in love? I've always been a fan of outdoor outfitters such as Cabella's, Gander Mountain and Bass Pro Shop. I could spend hours at each pouring over gear and clothing. REI is different. It's more like a camping/hiking supply store that also sells bikes and kayaks. So more like fun times outdoorsy and less fishing/hunting outdoorsy. First of all, every employee I encountered was in a good mood. It was 70 outside on a Sunday afternoon and they didn't seem to care that work was priority one. I even had a girl stop to help me while she was on her way out for the day. I did decline but thanked her for the offer. One gentleman took the time to explain the differences between wool socks and cotton and what thicknesses were good for all my planned activities. If you aren't impressed by someone's patience in explaining something as mundane as socks, then I don't know how to "wow" you! There is s LOT of stuff here. Daypacks, large backpacks, clothing, shoes, lights, sleeping accessories, camping necessities and more. It's not as large as Cabella's but certainly packed with most of what you will need as well as items that you didn't know you'd want. While the store is a good 30 minute freeway drive for me, it is very easy to access. There is a large parking lot that extends the length of the building. And while I saw many lights I can't yet attest to the brightness of the lot at night. It was very clean and open though so I'm not concerned about safety here. Now, I bought several items here; shoes, socks, bags and other smaller items. I had done my research online beforehand and found the prices to be within pennies if not exactly the same. Still pricey, but at least I can see and try on the items at the store and not wait a week or more for shipping. If I'm truly not happy with any item, even after using it, I can return it within a year with no questions asked. I decided to join their co-op for several reasons. 1. It's only $20 for a lifetime 2. I earn at least 10% back on purchases 3. Member only 'garage' sales 4. Discounts on repairs and classes Who doesn't like sales and cash back??! I know I'll be back. What they have- - it seems like EVRRYTHING you could need for outdoor pursuits. biking, camping, kayaking, hiking etc. I was a little confused about the layout but the times I've been here its been easy to snag an employee for help. Purchased: Running belt for money, keys, etc. they had a number of sizes to choose from. I got one for $20 so not particularly inexpensive but it seems high quality. I've washed it several times in hot water and it still seems to have held its shape Sports bra. pretty standard but their prices seemed pretty reasonable for clothes (can't recall price just now.) Gels and chews. Wow does this place have the motherload selection of gels, bars, chews, etc for your on the go energy needs. The prices seemed competitive and less than I've seen other places. It's been pretty busy every time I've been so far -- we Wisconsinites love our outdoors-- especially in summer! read more

I'm not really an "outdoor" person, but the Mister loves REI's bike stuff, so we stop on occasion. First, the store is beautiful - lots of wood, super clean + well organized, which I appreciate. The employees are helpful and seem to actually enjoy being there. Merchandise is very high quality (with price tags to match) but worth it if you're serious about your sport. We've had good luck with sales at this store - the Mister has scored cycling gloves and jerseys at considerable discounts. If you join their co-op ($20 one time fee) know that the $$$ goes to local organizations, which is nice. Co-op members get discounts and reduced prices on classes and outings. read more

I stopped by recently (I am a semi frequent visitor) and had yet again another wonderful experience. The staff is friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable on any question I may have. My only complaint is that it is sometimes hard to track them down in order to ask the question. Sometimes this is due to the business of the store or that others have in depth questions that are taking a lot of time. They typically keep a great variety and have lots of stock at this location and the sales are well advertised and displayed inside. I love the ability to try out equipment and play with anything inside before I purchase. They also offer wifi which is great to search other info while inside! Their return program is incredible and also offers the opportunity for others to buy your returns at a deeply discounted rate. Their loss is sometimes my win! Awesome store. I spent about 2 1/2 hours in here today comparing hiking backpacks. I went in with zero knowledge and left an expert and with an amazing, well informed purchase. The staff was incredible. They were extremely knowledgeable about all things outdoors and I got the advice of three different employees who all approached me to see if I needed help. I can't remember the names of the first two but Connor really went above and beyond to help me out. The staff really answered all of my questions and I was so happy with my experience, I decided to get a membership. The store was also well stocked and very clean. They definitely lacked on tent selection however. But for clothing, backpacks, and shoes, this place is the bomb. Plus they have a 1 year guarantee and will even accept returned equipment if it was used. You can't beat that honestly. They are a bit pricey but you know your going to get quality products. They don't sell very much of the Chinese knockoff junk that floods some of the other stores. Awesome experience overall. I decided to go to REI to browse for boots, as my old Timberlands have been put to rest. As I entered I was greeted very warmly and shown where to look at the shoe selection. This is where everything goes south. The man, middle aged with glasses, who was working the shoe department provided the worst customer service from a retail/sales person I've experienced in my 27 years of life. He asks what I'm looking for and I say "I'm just here to look at boots." I do not hike I do not do recreational activities that most customers probably partake in. However, this shouldn't create an inability for your employee to communicate kindly or with intent to help. His response to me was rude and redundant - "what kind of boots?" I said several times: "I don't hike, I'm just looking generally at boots." I expressed several times how I had no specification besides the notion of boots. I don't know why he was so difficult and couldn't understand. He continued to say "I don't know what general boots are, I don't know what you're looking for... well you can look for what you want (with a short attitude and tone)." Then he proceeds to show me the women's shoes as bluntly and swiftly as possible. I identify quite blatantly as a male - there is no ambiguity to my identity. How can a person whose position is to help assist with boots tell me he doesn't know what (general) boots are? I explained to him how I had no specificity to my general visit for general boots. This concept couldn't be more plain and basic - it's the equivalent of a blank canvas. Is the customer not always right? I felt completely wrong for not having specificity, I felt like I was excluded from the "vibe of the store" for not knowing what I wanted coming in. This is ironically my first visit - and I can assure you I will not return... especially not for boots. I would like to recommend training your employees how to accommodate people who may not hike. How can you gain new aficionados or customers if there is an overwhelming sense of exclusion and misunderstanding with a retail rep? Shoe guy gets D-, absolutely baffled, and averse to REI now. And I really feel the need to emphasize how uncomfortable I felt after my initial communication with him. After getting the go-ahead to look at shoes, I was too upset to even browse; I immediately left. I couldn't even enjoy walking up to the selection to have a look. I fancy myself a bit of a hiker. I've got one mountain under my belt (hahaha no not that you perv) and I'm planning on many more, and I wouldn't even consider going without first a trip to REI. Yes their merchandise can be a bit pricey, but you're trusting this stuff to not let you die. I think it's okay to spend a little more on something like that. If you're a member, you get a lot more. You earn a dividend on just about everything you purchase in a year, and then you just get that back at the end to spend. Also, they have classes on all kinds of things like bike maintenance, or back country camping, which are cheaper for members. The staff knows their stuff! Do not be afraid to ask questions! This is a great outdoors store. There are a variety of things from Bikes, Backpacks, clothes for all seasons, shoes, etc. There are a couple of things I would like to highlight that make REI standout from other retailers. 1) The store is super clean and tidy. Everything is faced properly and looks good. This may seem like a small detail but this really goes a long way. 2) The customer service here is good. I am attended to by well knowledgeable employees. If you have questions you aren't getting canned responses. That is key. They take the time to talk about the brands and in my case I got some history of companies I was looking at. That is awesome. Obviously the personal recommendations are useful but overall it's a balanced experience. 3) The return policy for members. It's $20 for a life time membership and that nets you a percentage back at a certain time of the year. That's good in and of itself but should part go on your shoe that you've had for 1 year you can return it. They stand by the products here and offer a hassle free return policy. This is crucial for this type of gear. I've done some comparisons and the prices here are fair. Just what you would pay at other places and also online (from what I have personally researched). In retail it's all about how you treat your customers. Here I feel I receive exceptional service. They are attentive and knowledgeable. There may be one hang up people may have. They tend to carry higher end products and as such the prices are going to be higher. That may be $90 Northface hoodies, $120 Keen Hiking shoes or whatever. If you are the kind of person that tries to buy on a budget this may be a turn off for you. That said they carry good brands in terms of quality and the prices match up to what you would pay elsewhere. If you have reservations browse their website but I would recommend trying things out in the store. As it's getting colder it's a good time to reevaluate your fall/winter gear. Try some things on and buy something that is built to last. You may find cheaper stuff elsewhere but cheaper doesn't always hold up. It's REI!! I love this place. The only downside is that more of my paycheck goes to them than to the grocery store each month. If you aren't a member, you should be. The prices are a bit high, but it's offset by the quality of service: you're receiving field-tested knowledge from experienced individuals. This is not WalMart pricing, because it's not WalMart use-once-and-discard products delivered by disgruntled minimum-wage-and-no-benefits employees. REI is one of those stores that could potentially be very dangerous to me. I have come here for very specific things in the past, and every time I come away with what I needed - and had helpful service to boot. It seems to me they hire people who not only partake in camping and outdoor activities, they also use the products themselves so they actually know what they are talking about. They do offer a sort of 'return' policy of sorts, and I believe you have to be a member. It was more of a 'scratch and dent' area, of items that were used and returned, at discount prices. All items are in good (salable) shape. A membership is $20.00, and is worth it if you shop here on a regular basis. Yes, it tends to get a little on the 'pricier' side, but you are getting what you paid for. Odds are if you are buying camping gear here, you will get something that will last for quite a long time. The store is very clean and well laid out. They also offer classes - I didn't see a whole lot of classes available the last time I was in, but perhaps now that spring / summer is finally here they will start to offer a few more. The last time I was in here, I needed some wool socks - badly. My feet get really damn cold sometimes and nothing I do can warm them up. I found REI to have the best selection of wool socks in the area. Not just Smartwool, but their own name brand. Instead of springing for the Smartwool (just a tad too much for my liking, even though they are still very nice socks) I left with an armful of wonderful wool REI socks, and now my feet are warm and happy (in the winter months, at least). Finally, they have a rock climbing wall. What other store in the Milwaukee area offers such a thing? Even if you don't go around climbing up walls for fun, it's still pretty cool. read more

I love this place. If you live near one, it is a necessity to go there, even just to look around at the selection of gear, clothing, and don't-need-but-want items for your next outdoor adventure. A lifetime membership is $20 and spending earns you a yearly dividend you can use on gear at any REI location. It's a short drive from Milwaukee and usually has a good selection of top quality brands. What I like about REI is they carry their own brand of many items -- from tents to backpacks to fleece -- that is often the same, if not better, quality as the high end stuff with a price about 1/3 to 1/2 less. The "scratch and dent/lightly used" section offers great deals, too, provided you're willing to root around a bit if there's a lot on the shelves. I recently picked up a pair of Merrell 'barefoot' shoes for biking and paid a whopping $30 (normally $109+). My only complaint about this location -- and it could be because I'm in Wisconsin and not in the PNW where outdoorsy geeks that seem to know it all grow on trees -- is that the staff here is very hit and miss. At times, they can be great with recommendations, suggestions, and answers to tougher questions. Other times, it's like they don't want to be there (especially the cashiers) or can't/won't answer a question. The clinics are average as well -- I sat through a backpacking session that ended up providing everything I needed on a slip of paper and was led by a guy who didn't seem too interested in the topic (maybe he was supposed to be that way...I don't know). Regardless, the place still gets 4 stars -- I can almost always find what I'm looking for, I've never NOT found a good deal, and the opportunity to earn that dividend is definitely worth a measly $20. So I'll come right out and admit that I am not REI's target market, so that might account for my lack of excitement for the store. If you're a hard-core outdoor's person, I'm certain that this place will have what you're looking for. Me? I was going overseas and looking for a dufflebag in a pouch that would easily pack in my luggage in case I needed more luggage for the trip home. I found them on REI's website and trekked across town to purchase it. Except when I got there, the prices were $10-20 per bag more expensive than the price listed online. They were not clearanced online - these were the exact same bags. They wouldn't honor the online price and I ended up buying something else because I'd driven all that way and was leaving the country in a few days, so I was kind of desperate. While I was at the store for maybe 30 minutes, I was approached by 4 different salespeople, which was, frankly, 3 too many. Three of the people tried to sell me their membership - one of them even came back to make sure she'd given me the information - and the fourth tried to upsell me to the tune of $80. Look, I know upselling is part of the job, but when I'm looking at a $12 passport pouch and you try to show me a $90 messenger bag, I'm going to roll my eyes and go back to the original item. So overall, it was a pretty awful shopping experience. Pushy salespeople and not having the same prices led me to think I probably won't be rushing back over here. REI does what it does, but they're just so pricey now compared to online. If you need your camping gear ASAP, head here. But if you have some lag time, you'll find the same things online much more cheaply. read more

Julie sized both myself and my husband for a backpack (osprey for me) and a hydration pack (camelback for my hubby). Talk about knowledgeable she knew everything and anything about these packs and the inflatable mats for camping. We spent over 2 hours in this store and could have spend a ton more I am sure. They offer hiking/camping/biking and clothing items. The prices are super competitive with any other box store and the internet. I am glad we drove down to go here. Today I went into the store to ask about my dividend. She told me how much it was and asked if I would like to shop in store or get it cash back. I didn't know cash back was even an option. I thought wow that's nice that they even offer this option. I asked is there any incentive for me to shop in store versus getting cash back on my dividend? She said well it's easier for me for you to shop in the store because all I have to do is press a button versus counting out $92.00 for you. Wow! That just rubbed me the wrong way. I thought about it and asked for my dividend in cash and she then got irritated. Me being the customer ended up feeling bad for some reason. So I said you know what that's ok I will go shop in the store instead. Went to hiking shoe section. I waited for thirty minutes to try on two pairs of shoes. I was waiting patiently. I finally get the guy who was a wealth of knowledge after waiting for him for a half hour. I was ready to buy two pairs of shoes for $300. He ends up leaving me after five minutes with someone else who wasn't experienced after waiting for him for thirty minutes. She was very nice and helpful. I end up noticing that one of the pair of shoes had laces which excessively shorter from one another and it was difficult to keep the one shoe tied. I asked for another pair in the same size and she said these were the only size they had. I asked if I can order the same pair and have them shipped to my house. She said yes but you have to do it up front. So I took the shoes up to the register to ask them to order these shoes for me. I explained to her the situation. She proceeded to tell me that these shoes look like I had warn them and you need to try these on. She accused me of bringing back worn shoes when really they were brand new shoes I was trying to purchase. I just got them from their sales people in the back. I didn't even notice then soles were worn on a pair of shoes I was about to buy. Anyways I asked can't you just order me this same pair to have them shipped to me? She huffed and said yeh I guess. I said you know what give me dividend please. I don't want the shoes anymore I will get them myself from somewhere else. She then went on to say I don't even know if you can get cash back your dividend. Eventually I did get it back after she asked someone else who said of course she can get her money. Wow! There was two hours of life I will never get back. Since when did REI people get so pretentious, rude, and unhelpful? Thanks for treating your 20 year customer poorly REI. Normally I would give them a pass. But to have multiple people treat me so rudely. I will spend go spend $300 elsewhere. I will give a shout out to the new lady in the shoe section though!
