The great outdoors. It's not fucking outer space!
    George Armstrong C.

In the 1970s REI was a great operation. It was staffed by actual experts and its focus was on keeping costs down for the average backpacker. The modern REI has almost nothing in common with the original REI. As a backpack or in Mountaineer with decades of experience I know bullshit when I hear it. When you walk into an REI shop it's like walking into an automobile dealership: you are hustled constantly and fed hype. Last time I was in the REI shop the "guide" had a carabiner hanging off a loop on the back of his shirt. I can't say how absurd this is. More often than not the employees have about zero wilderness experience. But they have had a lot of sales training. The last time I was in the shop I was looking for some outerwear for a trip I was getting ready for. The clerk kept pushing me to spend $400 on a parka. Explain to her that I was only going outside not to outer space! Skip REI. You can get what you need at places that don't have fees like country clubs. Humans have been going outside for fun for over 4 million years. You don't need $1200 of "PataGucci" Yes there are some great people that work at REI. But to generalize REI sucks. The same thing has happened to L.L. Bean. It's appropriate they put these shops inside big miles now. Because mostly what they are selling is just expensive fashion.

Not the most beautiful Rei I've ever been in, but the same outstanding customer service and selection of outdoor gear.

Three things stand out to me about this Dick's store location…read more 1. It is busy all the time. Any day of the week. Any time of day. 2. It is very clean and merchandise is always nicely arranged. 3. Online order pickup is great. They always have your order ready on time and you never have to wait long at the pick up desk. Considering how busy they are (see #1), I am always pleasantly surprised by this.

Hadn't been to this store in eons. I was desperate to find a pelvic and/or thigh/groin support…read morebelt/strap. I already scoped out another store, but found nothing. It popped in my head to try Dick's. I thought for sure they'd have one, considering it's an athletic store, and huge at that. I am a 53-yr-old woman with RA and fibro, and I severely strained the thigh, back, pelvis and groin areas. I had to use my cane to enter the store; I grabbed a small cart to lean on, as well. The guy standing near the entrance said hi, but didn't ask if I was looking for something specific. I looked around, lost, so looped back to him and asked where support belts and such would be. He told me they were located upstairs. He then mentioned an elevator, and pointed in the general direction. I knew I couldn't take the escalator, because I needed to lean on the cart at that point. I searched all over for the elevator, and nothing. I finally looped back around to the restroom sign, and eventually realized a small makeshift sign was taped to the wall, noting the elevator was down the corridor. It was very generic and not noticeable from afar. The elevator is way in the back, hidden, old, worn and it reeked inside. The #2 button was taped over, and only #3 or #1 could be pressed. I don't know why there is even a #3, but I chanced it anyway. It took me to level two. lol I finally found the wall where all of the braces were attached to, albeit quite far away from the elevator. The area is quite congested, and not really made for a cart to traverse. I was relieved to find the wall of braces...only to be let down. Out of all the rows and rows of braces, straps, support this and that, not one single item for the pelvis and/or groin. I didn't even see a spot where it's supposed to be, so I suspect they don't even carry them in-store. Additionally, I noticed there were no price labels anywhere, so it was a complete guessing game as to cost. In severe pain, I had to wobble away and get back to the 2nd floor. I took the escalator, and left the cart there. I didn't want to get back into the smelly, clunky, old-sounding elevator again. A young female employee saw me when I got to the bottom, and asked if I found everything I was looking for. I said, "No..." She just chuckled and said, "Oh..." I then replied, "I couldn't find what I was looking for..." She didn't say anything back. No offer to help, find another employee, etc. After going to a 3rd store, I gave up. I just ordered online and I get my brace tomorrow. I was just hoping to have one today, and maybe even try it on, to ensure it fits well, etc. Such a shame that Dick's didn't deliver. A huge store like that should have them as a no-brainer...and on the 2nd floor to boot. You'll have people coming in probably in pain, so why put them on the 2nd floor? lol Makes no sense. The employees need to be more connected and interactive. Lastly, that elevator is horrible. And please make signs which direct you from the point of entry all the way to the elevator! This is basic 101 stuff.

Stopped in here to find some stuff for the upcoming camping season…read more Exterior: it is a good sized building set pretty far back from the main road. There is a sign by the main road, but you have to be on the lookout for it as you might go right past it (traffic can be heavy and moves quickly along this stretch of road). There isn't a huge amount of parking here, but I've never seen a tremendous number of cars in the parking lot so parking isn't a problem. The grounds are clean and presentable. Interior: this place is packed with inventory! There are no signs for the different sections, but wandering through is fun if you come here. The "aisles" are large enough to move through comfortably, though too many people in a given section might get crowded. Staff: the associates are great! I have always been greeted upon arrival and they are quick to assist customers when trying to find a specific product. They are very polite, professional, and courteous. Product: as I mentioned earlier, this store has lots of inventory! Boots, clothing, packs, tactical gear, knives, patches, camping accessories, and the list goes on. There are so many items here you may discover things you didn't expect! I have found many of the items are priced far lower than mainline stores with the same products. I prefer to come here first to see if they have the item(s) I seek so I can save some money. All the product I purchase has been of very good quality to exceptional quality and has lasted far longer than items I've found in mainline stores (after all, must of it is military surplus). Overall, this is a great store to find a huge selection of items, some of which might be hard to find. The staff is wonderful and the products are less expensive, but of better quality.
