I guess it's interesting to look at things you'll never need or even understand what they're for, but for the basics in most any sport I cant imagine buying anything here. The new Urban Outfitters REI store opens access to a lucrative East of 75 market, makes me drive 20 minutes further to get there. I used to run into the old REI on a whim, this one is far enough away that I have to make it a special trip. Old store could pull customers from all over Dallas. Sometimes we grow up thinking we want to be fireman or doctors. I want to be these people. I could not imagine being paid to talk about hiking and wearing backpacks and gear all day. This is like a man's Target store. I can come in here for one small thing and leave with hundreds of dollars of merchandise later. The bad part is that I'm even happier to spend the money. Everybody knows that this is not the Walmart of camping gear. You are not going to find the cheapest options here, but that is not what they excel at. REI has some of the best staff and they are all very knowledgeable and helpful. They will help you pick the items you need if you only take the time to ask some questions. The house Brand Products is just as good as some of the higher-end Branded stuff. The best part is the REI membership. You are absolutely crazy if you shop here even once and do not join the membership. Aside from the cash back program it gives REI everything they need to service you the way you want to be helped. They're literally is no better place I enjoy shopping, this is one of the retail businesses that knows how to do it right! read more

Today is Labor Day and the store had a bit more customers then usual ,seconds in and I hear one of the bicycle employees say "idk why there's so many ppl here today they had all weekend to come" already I feel unwelcomed but ik they would never tell him anything. The only ppl they hire is ppl with blue eyes and blonde hair, and the one black guy just to ensure the public they're not racist. Some how he's worse. he dare not talk back to his masters. I say this because the last time I was there with my fiancé, he was the one that made this young man leave the store telling him to leave if he wasn't going to buy something. Sometimes I speculate on whether or not I should check into non-food establishments or write reviews but people should know about REI if they don't already. If you're looking for outdoor gear of all sorts this is the place. You can be an expert or be completely clueless so don't be shy. I came here to find backpacking gear with my sister and the staff are truly knowledgeable AND ACTUALLY HELPFUL! Backpacking is ideal for the type of travel we do and as many more international adventures are on the books it was long overdue. Two different staff members helped us. The first helped us pack a few backpacks with their various fillers and provided guidelines for sizing, functionality and recommended options suited for our needs. The second REI rep was even more helpful and she gave further guidelines on fit. She taught us how to find the right pack for our stature and we ended up finding great ones that we ended up purchasing. One of the best points of coming here over other places, they have an REI guarantee that stages within a year if you no longer like what you bought you can return it. The staff member told me it's to prevent buyers remorse and most of the time people need to use the items to really find out if it fits them. So that leaves plenty of time for us to try it out and get something else if we don't like it. I also toyed with the idea of getting kayaks and canoes. Being near lots of water bodies justifies water toys in my mind but didn't quite take the dive. Will be back! read more

Great location, solid diversity of products and decent prices. Amazing prices if you are willing to do the garage sale. Have gotten loads of excellent bargains during those. If you are looking for a great backpack, you cannot do better in this city than with Angel. I am an idiot about what things are important in packs and he spent a long time carefully fitting me, trying on different packs, loading them up with weights for me to try... He is so good that some other employee had to come borrow him while I was sorting options but then he returned. I love REI and am a regular at their stores. But recently I had a no-to-great customer service experience, for the second time at this location. I'll be traveling to Europe for 3 weeks later this week and was looking for a bunch of new gear to help me with that trip. The story was busy and I couldn't get anyone to really help me. I got a few casual tips for representatives like, "the backpacks are over there.". But I was really looking for someone to help me choose between the different bags and help me understand the differences between all of the options. I've gotten that type of customer service before at other REI stores, but for some reason, not at this location. I still recommend REI overall, but if you go to this location, you might not get the customer service level you expect. read more

My fiance and I were looking for new bikes to take out to New Mexico and Colorado to ride. I already had a Cannondale and was sold on the brand. I found one to fit my fiance in stock with the help of a staff member who was really patient and knowledgeable. He took the time to help us, and made us feel welcome. They didn't have the one I wanted in stock in my size so I ordered. Really prompt delivery to the store and expert assembly by a guy I know to be a first-rate bike mechanic. The guys also referred us to some cool Dallas trails to try out the bikes on before our trip. Since the kamikaze decline of Richardson Bike Mart, and the self-immolation of Dallas Bike Works, REI is the best place for people who have the motivation and an idea of what they want, but don't have time for all the unnecessary Jocks v. Geeks BS that passes for customer service in those other bike shops sometimes. Got back from our trip out West in time for a free tune-up for each bike. Joined REI and got a nice dividend out of the transaction to boot; looking for a tent now. read more

Tonight my husband and I went to REI to return expensive hiking shoes bought a few years ago but gave me terrible blisters. The return policy had changed which we had no clue, the manager looked up our account and probably saw the amount we have spent over time lol and allowed us to exchange the boots! I'm so grateful and blessed she did, I had began to panic as I had no clue what I would have done with the shoes too small! I love this REI and want to thank her for being really sweet and considerate. Thank you!!! still sitting here thanking her in my head! Great customer service. Awesome store to pick up any of your outdoor adventure needs! I love this place with a GIANT selection of just about anything imaginable for camping, hiking, biking, and traveling. The staff is very knowledgeable and genuinely care about their customers, to get them into the gear that works best for them. The manager Eric and the rest of the team go above and beyond. There's truly not another place to shop than REI. Tip: look out for the "garage sales" they host for heavily discounted equipment. read more

I mainly go for bike repairs, and I'm never disappointed. I have dealt with Rae and Chad and I must say they are bike repair gods!! And there knowledge is unsurpassed, great customer service, and friendly. Chad is a rocker and a TOOL fan..this is the only place I take my bikes for repair and service. Being a member is a plus, the repair that I had done today would have run $85 but with the member discount it was $67. Two thumbs up all around. read more

All of the REI stores I've been to have been great. They are known for their great customer service and it's apparent. Not like how Nordstrom's is known for good customer service and you really just don't like the employees still even though they are "trying to help." REI employees are legit helpful and nice. Haha. No offense to anyone who would take offense *rolls eyes* So this location is across the high way from North Park and very convenient to get to. It's a stand alone building with decent parking. The store is quite large and I've found that different REI's really do have different inventories. I came here looking for a back pack and the staff were very helpful. Apparently they were short staffed so I had about 3 people jumping back and forth to try to help me. One inconsistency among their employees though is that they all seem to know what they are talking about, but tell you different things. I had a medium REI pack on and one employee told me it fit me well as long as I was comfortable. The next employee pointed out that the waist straps were almost as tight as I could get them and should probably go with a small size. Well I ended up buying the small size (capacity was still the same) but I still did not see a major difference between the two when it came to feel. I'm sure the employees get commission or something when it comes to membership sales as when I mentioned I was interested, one employee handed me this card with her name and employee number on it. The membership is a one time $20 fee that lasts a lifetime. You get 10% back via dividends on qualified purchases. The main reason I got one, however, was because they could look up all my purchases via my member number and I had no need to hold onto receipts. It was a $20 back up plan in case the back pack I bought did not work out. I have a year to find out so I'd rather not just rely on keeping my receipt safe. The 10% dividends can be used on anything at REI, including sales, or you can get it via a check. When I spent as much as I did on a pack, it would paid for itself anyways so why not. read more

I was pleasantly surprised on my first ever visit to this store. The customer service was on point...nothing was too small or too dumb to ask about on any of their products. The people taking care of the cycling section were the ones that impressed me the most...they were very attentive to all of my needs, and wants when it came to my purchasing of new cycling gear. If the gear wasn't present at the front or on the racks, they would simply would go search out in the back to make sure you got what you needed. They have won me as a customer for all of my cycling needs. read more

Save yourself the headache and hassle of REI, and order from another place like amazon or any cycling vendor that offers free shipping to your door-step. Many vendors had the same manufacturers price without the unexplainable inconvenience that REI provides. I thought I'd give REI a chance since they offer returns up to year and have location nearby but I'll never make the same mistake again. I ordered the exact same item from REI as two of my buddies, and both of theirs was ready for pick up before mine in the store. When I called to ask about it, the only answer I got was "that is weird, we are having issues and it might be ready today or tomorrow, it's the distributors fault." The item is in store according to them and I should call back later or tomorrow but isn't "ready". Well the distributor seemed to fulfill their job as two items that were ordered after have arrived successfully. This is the exact same product, mine was ordered 1 day before the one guy and 2 days before the other guy, but mine is inexplicably not ready and theirs is. I'd be fine with this if the other guys were waiting too but it seems like the orders are being filled without any organization. The person on phone was nice took initiative to figure out the issue but then was denied explanation from shipping department other than the quoted line of BS from above. read more

I was planning on a big camping trip on my own (my first big one on my own) and I had heard that REI was a great outfitter. On the day I went, it was their grand reopening and the store was packed with shoppers. I was a little intimidated, but each time I had a question there seemed to be an associate just a few steps away that knew a lot about the section I was in. Specifically, I was in need of some water-resistant pants. The lady in the men's clothing section guided me to the right part of the store, showed me the different options (and explained the technical stuff about each one), and then recommended the pair she thought would best fit my needs. What I loved was that the pair she recommended wasn't the most expensive brand or even the second most expensive. She truly recommended what she thought was best. She won me over as a lifelong REI customer. Now, anytime I need supplies, I head to REI. read more

I am not a Dallas resident so I can't speak to this location's accessibility to the masses (some people on here bitching about how far away it is) but I stopped here on my way through town and had the same experience I have every REI store-a glorious one. It's a fucking huge store with tons of stuff, I was greeted on the way in and out, was approached by two or three employees during my 30 minutes in there and felt very taken care of. This new REI location has lost the "vibe" that made the previous location on LBJ by the Galleria such a joy to shop at. At the old store I could open a Snow Peak titanium pot and hold it in my hands, drop a fuel canister in it, add a Giga Power stove, and "feel" what my new cook system was going to be like on the trail. Now everything is locked down with those annoying theft prevention devices. Some items (a Goal Zero Nomad 7 solar panel I was interested in) cannot even be slid off the display so you can read the box! I know theft is always an issue in retail, but this is ridiculous. Took us five minutes to find the backpacks, the tent selection was abysmal, and it seemed like there was less of a selection in every department. On the plus side, the REI staff (Angel in particular) was very helpful. read more

I've had more than a few bad customer service experiences and there just doesn't seem to be a lot of communication in place among the employees. I'm not totally sure if this is a management issue or a few poorly trained employees, but it has definitely effected my experience in this particular location. read more

When i walk in, i see several employees walking the floor checking on customers (at least 15) when i Check out there are 3 employees at the register area, only 1 of them is checking out customers. Customer Service is very poor at NW Highway Location. They have 5-6 registers but only staff 2 people on any given weekend at checkout during Peak Hours. Last Saturday, the line at checkout was 15 people deep with only two open registers. They had plenty of people on the floor but not nearly enough at registers. read more
