I purchased a used Trek FX3 bicycle at an estate sale and took it to Sun & Ski to have it checked out. The sales person in the department was great. He checked everything on the bicycle and could not find anything it needed. I was impressed as he could have told me it needed different things to be done, and I would have fell for it. I highly recommend them as I went to three other shops and they didn't really care about checking out the bike, they were only interested in trying to sell me a new bike. I have already notified some of my friends to go there as they will be treated very well by a professional group of people. read more

It is downright cold in Dallas today and it was the perfect time to get to Sun and ski when they opened up this morning. In fact, it is so cold that the automatic doors were frozen shut and not working properly, and the employees had to physically pull the doors open for me. But that's not where the service stopped. When walking my dogs this morning, it did not take me long to realize in the 11° weather that my wardrobe is not properly equipped to be outside for very long. Don't worry about my dogs. They are cold-weather dogs and they absolutely love this weather and still expect their walks, but for me, that is a different story. I was amazed at the selection that this place had available this late in the season. Not only did they have a great selection, but most of what I bought was on sale. This morning I realized that it is way too cold to have any exposed skin so that I needed a full face cover. I also realized that with two pairs of socks and a pair of shoes my feet were still cold, and I needed better shoes for these kinds of temperatures. third store we shopped for a bike for my daughter and their service was SO great. They took the time to figure out the correct fit. Other places looked at her and immediately pushed us to the most expensive option. After obtaining the correct measurements they showed us all the options. For the test ride they made her bicycle for a minutes to ensure it was the right fit. We went with a Cannondale that was very fairly priced, (I checked the online prices). Need a kickstand and water bottle, no problem they quickly installed it. Even though I told them I was not in a rush they had it done by the time we checked out. They reminded us to fill out the warranty and said come by anytime for minor tuneups, especially after the first thirty days. What a great experience! read more

Man, snow gear is expensive, isn't it... I'd say the average price that I saw for snow jackets was about 300, and that was after a 50% clearance price adjustment. However, that seems to be the case at a lot of places. It is a shame that brick-and-mortar places have to compete against online retail stores that can offer lower prices, but they have to stay in business somehow. The entire store is clean, and the employees are all friendly. I was in for some snow shoes and I found one that I liked, but there was only one boot in the box. After asking an employee, he hunted for around 10 minutes before finding the other pair, which I appreciated. These snow shoes were $80 instead of the $150 I would have had to pay for a similar pair that I would've gotten if he couldn't find it. This place is reminiscent of an REI, and laid out similarly as well. Everything was logically placed and not too difficult to find. TLDR; This place is a great place to go if you've got some last-minute shopping and HAVE to get something. Prices are really quite high, though. read more

This review is for the online experience. Around New Year's I was searching for a specific item--insulated North Face women's ski pants in xs with a short inseam. I know--picky much? I kid (sort of) but after a few years of considering snowpants to keep my legs from turning into popsicles while walking around Chicago, I knew I needed to strike before the January vortex (version 2.0, 2015 edition) bore down with a vengeance. When the search result popped up from Sun & Ski, I jumped. This is a retailer with multiple brick & mortar outposts in addition to online. From looking at the packing slip, it appears that the Dallas location fulfilled this order. I appreciated the emailed tracking updates. My tracking became increasingly obsessive as temperatures in the negative degrees drew closer. The order came as promised, and I was pleased by the speedy delivery, as I had selected the 4-10 day delivery option (standard), seeing as how there was not a retail outpost near me from which to pick up the order. The box was a little worse for the wear, as it was slightly torn up near the bottom corner; fortunately the item was packaged securely inside a plastic bag that was then placed into the container. Everything seems to be in order, and I am pleased that I can now feel my legs when walking around the city. I have found that I get overheated when moving from outside to inside, but that just means I might have to vent the thigh zips to release the excess heat. These babies will be getting a workout for sure during the next few days, with another batch of cold set to come down. I wish Sun & Ski offered coupon codes/shipping discounts for higher $ purchases. Other than that, and considering my item was so specialized, I consider it time and money well spent. read more

Rating is for the overall experience at this location, not the store as a whole. As a female skier with wide calves, I was hoping to find a ski boot that would fit without extreme discomfort. It is already intimidating going to buy sporting equipment as a plus size, so I was already hesitant a bit. The salesperson that assisted me was extremely nice and I told him right away my concern (wide plus size calves) and he immediately pointed me to a K2 ski boot- certain it was "the one" for me. Now, most women in my situation don't push back to much, we just accept what is available as our options are limited. But now I know the sale/commission was more important than my comfort. I was sold a very heavy MENs ski boot with a MENs insert for arch support, being told that was the only boot for my calf and the insert was a must. I came home feeling a bit defeated so I started doing my own research.. and read there are many more options that what was presented to me. I know, I know.. I should have done this prior to shopping but I was hoping the experts at the store would be just that- experts. After doing a local search for other ski boots that were recommended online, I saw that they were available at the Sun & Ski in Grapevine. So I called to make sure they were in fact in stock and made my way there. I cannot explain how happy I am that I went and found Alex, the person who helped me. He looked me straight in the eye and said, "don't ever let anyone tell you you only have one option, and don't ever let anyone sell you men's boots again." I wanted to laugh and cry at the same time.. finally someone who made me feel it was about ME and not the sale (plus size girls - you hear me?). Alex helped me exchange the previous boots to a WOMENs comfort ski boot (that are amazing) and a WOMENs insert bc yes, they are different (why the previous person at N Central Expwy store sold me a men's insert is both baffling and infuriating- if you don't have it in stock, then tell me where I can get it instead). The people at this location are above the best!!!! I've been going here for years but recently purchased a road bike that I had no idea about. It was shipped from another Sun & Ski to this location so I went in a day early to look at the pedals and shoes. The employees here are just the best from the moment I walked through the door I was greeted with a "hello, can I help you find anything" which is always the case! Went back to talk to Glenn who showed me the different pedals and how they worked. From there he took me to the shoes and explained what I needed to know. I purchased the shoes and clip in pedals, he told me to leave them there and he would put it together for me. The next day I get the call to come pick up my bike. I get there to my gorgeous new Cannondale Caad13 with pedals on it. Glenn and his team greet me with a hello and congratulations (which I really appreciated) this bike was a dream of mine for a few years now! Glenn shows me my shiny shoes with the cleats already in place and I'm ready to go, these guys are SUPER busy!!! Glenn then goes on to spend a good 20 minutes explaining to me in great detail how the brakes work, how to shift gears, how it's more important that I learn to clip in and out before worrying too much about the gears in the beginning. I got on the bike and he made whatever adjustments needed to be done. Yet still reminding me that at any time I don't feel comfortable I can bring the bike in for free adjustments for the lifetime of owning the bike!! I'm a bargain hunter, honestly! I don't pay full price for anything but when it came to making this investment in a great bike that came along with great service there simply was no other place I'd buy my bike! I have used this shop for years to buy skis, bicycles and other gears. Staffs were good and kind.. at leaat used to be... recently brought skis for re mounting bindings. Technician used the wrong screws and ended up to jave blops on the plate. A long story short, told me it's my fault that screws were in wrong position when I brought up bindings. Well they are technician, I am not! Evntually they patched up yet they asked me to pay for it. Other staff seemingly support their technician and raise the voice... 30 bucks is not a matter, I don't care to pay or not. It's matter of principle of customer services. You know what. They are so loud to say "no no no you did you did you did say you told us no no no" even I have to ask for my turn to speak... their manager? Well he seems like busy and nice guy but empower their employeee to exercise "never-seen-customer service" with loud and raised voice (almost angry and annoying) to their customer. Speechless. Good luck for your sales and shameful cusomter services. By the way, technician kept telling me that he has done for 25 years of providing mounting service. Well I cannot imagine how many customers are suffered by wrong services in that period. Good luck seriously. You guys need it. read more

Customer Service is clearly Sun and Skis main focus....followed closely by selection. I've been to this store about 5 times in the last two months and each time the staff has been amazingly helpful. I have no idea what I'm doing going on a ski trip to the land of eternally hard nipples, but I'm going just the same, and I need help packing! The awesomely laidback staff handed me a very thorough list (don't forget your swimsuit for relaxing in the hottub after hitting the slopes!), asked where we were going, and gave us honest advice (like what on the list isn't THAT important ( gloves liners? gloves for your gloves!)). They carry a bizillion styles of ski/snowboard jackets/pants for guys and gals, and they have some awesome clearance racks (and where there is a sale, its like 40% off clearance), and there is also tons of bicycling and running stuff (haven't checked that all out, just snow stuff so far). I've been to several recreational shops recently trying to stock up for my trip, and I believe Sun and Ski has the best selection at the best price. And shout-out to Cole! He's the best salesdude at Sun and Ski! Very laid back and knowledgable! read more

If you are buying skis, sit down and grab some coffee, cuz you are gunna want to read this. I should have known better..... I recently moved to Texas from Colorado and brought with me some nice, brand spankin new Volkl skis with my well worn boots. After some research on the VERY limited businesses around here that sell a variety of bindings and do mounts, I chose Sun and Ski. I came in a week and a half (12 days to be exact) before I needed to leave for my actual ski trip to buy the bindings. First, don't be fooled by the website variety, they only had three options for me to choose from in store which included two insanely expensive options and one midgrade Markers, so I went with the Markers (which are great bindings). We paid up on the bindings and mount, filled out the work order, and was told it would be done in less than a week (which is long by any standard). This is where the fun starts. I received a call the Wednesday after my purchase that this store didn't have the correct jig for the mount (which all Markers have the same jig) and needed to send them to the Grapevine store to mount, since they had the correct piece. They made it sound like not a big deal and that they were just as dissatisfied with their sales person as I was with not having the skis done yet. They asked when I needed them and guaranteed they would be done by that Friday or Monday at the latest. So Sunday morning (come on, Sunday?!?) I receive a phone call that the Grapevine store, who has had my skis and all since Wednesday, won't mount the bindings. They claim that the boots are too worn, which would mean the bindings won't hold them and there is a chance they will pop off whilst skiing. Mind you that I used these boots less than a year ago on a brand new demo set, with no issues. I discussed with both stores, and my go-to store back in Colorado, and decided that the Colorado store will mount the bindings, and all I need to do is pick up the skis. Obviously I am dissatisfied with the customer service and overall timeliness of this particular store, but the best part was when I was picking everything up. After speaking with the general manager, who is actually a nice guy and none of this is really his fault, we decided that I would retrieve the skis on Monday before I left, and be done from there. However, I had to wait half an hour for the attendant to bring the skis and all from the work room, to the front, then have the nerve to try and sell me on having them mounted. He said he was aware of the situation and still had the gaul to try and sell me on the mount! If you are planning a ski trip, and are buying a new set, or really any portion of your outfit or equipment, save yourself the time and hassle and get it done out of state. From my experience, the shops in Colorado and Utah are knowledgeable, stocked with a variety of brands and options, and will treat you like a friend and customer, not just a sale. If you need a recommendation on a shop in Colorado, visit Mountain Wave (I go to the one in Breck) who has a large stock of demo skis, boots, boards, and all reasonably priced, if you decide to purchase. Steer clear of Sun and Ski, at all costs. read more

Back from a recent trip to Whistler, I've still got mountain fever. My snowboard boots are showing a bit of wear so I'm casually in the market for a new pair. Finding an outdoor equipment stores in Dallas is easy. Finding one that carries WINTER sports equipment and clothing is the challenge. Sun and Ski is one of the few "big box" options around D/FW so there's not a ton to compare them to. They carry comparable brands to other stores in the area and their selection is pretty large. Depending on the day your're in the store, their services varies from so-so to pretty good. I will definitely say they have a very knowledgeable staff but a few employees have just been there to up-sell you on whatever is in stock. Others have been very helpful. Prices at Sun and Ski are pretty average although they do carry quite a few items that are on clearance at St Bernard and are still marked up as "new" seasonal items over here. Being as frugal as I am, I find myself doing a lot of price comparison before buying here because I can never be sure if I'm getting the best deal. Overall, the high high point of Sun and Ski is having some of the largest selection in Dallas. This is still Texas so your ski and snowboard options are still very limited. The prices can be hit or miss but their also still better priced than REI. They definitely are a good option to consider for winter equipment, just be sure to do your research! read more

Sun and Ski is good for basic items (t-shirts, flops, etc.) and you need to know about what you are looking for before you go in. The employees there will be able to point you to what they have in a genre or section but you are not likely to get lots of hand on expertise in the use of skis, bikes or wakeboards, etc. They have a decent but fairly generic selection. read more

Great customer service here; we are almost always greeted in and out the door and someone has always come to ask if we need help when browsing around. We were looking through snow sport helmets and a staff member asked if we wanted him to measure our heads. They were able to make great recommendations when styles we wanted were not in stock. ATTENTION SNOWBOARDERS AND SKIERS: they sell crash pads/impact shorts in the biking section near the back! We personally didn't really care for the brands they carried (we prefer Shock Doctor) but it was nice to be able to try one some different brands for comparison. Also note that (per one of the staff members) that they do price match, as long as it's from an actual store - so say private sellers from Amazon would of course not work. Great service all around! Was quoted $40 over the phone for a bike fit. 2 other bike shops quoted $70 & $85 for the same "basic fit". After doing the bike fit the guy told me everything looked great, suggested some very minor tweaks, and told me since he basically didn't do anything he wasn't going to charge me. I asked him about adjusting my gears so he ended up charging $15 plus checking my chain and a few other things telling me they all had plenty of life left and no need for any work at the moment. I'm usually very skeptical of shops making things up to charge for but these guys were trustworthy all around. I know where I'm buying my next bike! read more

The service our man gave us here was like non I've ever seen, we were talked through, explained, informed, educated, fitted, and re-fitted, for 4 hours because we couldn't pull the trigger in some boots. He never lost it like i did. He showed concern about how we ride and if we will survive. Don't remember his name but he's 220lb stocky but not plump. He is blond, snowboard size is 161, and even though he's only been in Texas a short while, he has southern hospitality down. We have had very average experiences at this store until lately. The management and some staff seem hurried and don't seem to want to take the time to answer questions about expensive equipment. My wife has had a terrible time being comfortable in rented ski boots. For the upcoming season we decided to purchase boots for her. We had the pleasure of meeting Michael Penter not only a ski expert but a true customer service professional. Michael took the time to fit my wife in a number of different boots and then proceeded to fit the selected to her. Michael's depth of knowledge and passion for skiing is infectious. He understands what it means to guide people in their purchases. This attention has now allowed us to enjoy 3 family ski trips this year. Not much to complain about when someone is buying you a complete snow outfit! One of the employees helped me find: thermals, gloves, 2 pairs of socks, hat, goggles, pants and a jacket. I'm really glad this place had slim snow pants because the regular snow pants made me feel like a giant marshmallow person, I was swimming in material. My bf picked up a new snow jacket and face mask, maybe another pair of socks. Our total came out to just below $1000. That said, there were cheaper options in snow jackets, I picked out a white North Face coat with a fleece liner that zips out for $180. In hindsight, (after a weekend of skiing) I see it as an investment, we'll have many more snow trips in the future. My recommendation is to skip Sun and Ski and either go to St Bernards or to one of the CD Ski & Sports or 'Doug & Lyndas'. I think CD Ski and 'Doug & Lyndas' are owned by the same people. Sun and Ski is just filled with minimum wage high school kids that really aren't helpful when you are trying to buy skis or boots, or even spending a lot of money on a ski coat. read more

I've been splitting time between California (Bay Area) and Dallas for the past several months, and in the interim have been trying to buy some new ski equipment (boots and skis). Been to a bunch of stores in Tahoe, San Fran and then came here when I was back in Dallas for a couple of weeks. Actually, I found Chris and Josh, the bootfitters here, to be as knowledgeable as anywhere else I visited, extremely helpful and very involved in making sure I had the best fit. I ended up buying some boots there and headed back to California for the foreseeable future. The boots had a walking feature that, over the first two weekends up to Tahoe, managed to rip my Achilles' to shreds. I spoke with the team there over phone, and they were extremely helpful in working with me. Due to the unusual circumstances in that I wasn't able to come back and work on grinding down some of the ridging on the back of the boot, they instead stepped outside their usual contract (which would be trading boots for boots if they didn't work out over 90 days) and allowed me to trade it in for a new set of skis that I had wanted to get anyway. I think the staff are very knowledgeable...Dallas may be flat and hot, but they knew as much and then some as the guys on the shores of Lake Tahoe. Even better is their willingness to work with a customer to provide the best equipment possible. I would recommend them over anyone I visited, in Dallas or otherwise. read more

(Very different from another store that just handed them to us.) I had pretty much decided against those sandals until we met him. Now I love them. He helped us on several other issues as well.
