I have been a member since 1971 and had several poor experiences at the REI in Dillon, Colorado. Came in to get new cross country ski boots and was ignored by a salesperson working with one customer. Another sales dept employee who was helping her put back downhill ski boots after about 5 minutes said he would get someone to assist. After waiting another 20 minutes we left and the saleswoman never even looked up or responded. I was a retail shoe salesman and you actually can go back and forth with two customers. Either crappy training or uncaring sales people. read more

This is the worst REI. They're constantly firing employees over very inconsequential things. They value employees who lie and throw their coworkers under the bus in order to get themselves ahead. Instead of promoting a culture of teamwork, they reward individualism and selfishness, and as such, the guest service is in the toilet. my son has been preparing to hike the Colorado trail and the REI in Dylan has become a popular place for us. It's a beautiful store, well laid out, good signage, and everything you could possibly need for Hiking, BUT the employees at the store appear as if they have been awake for 72 hours straight - they are incapable of smiling, the do not greet you when you approach the cash register and unbelievably do not thank you for your business. For a company that promotes community within their "membership", they got it ALL WRONG. I hate giving this store my money and suggest to management that they do a customer service 101 class with EVERYBODY in the store. read more

You ask what could be improved with this business. Everything. This is not what REI should be or claims to be. The store does not care about its customers. The store does not care about local residence. This store is a disgrace. This summer I bought an E bike from REI, I picked it up at the Denver flagship store specifically bought an REI bike knowing that I should have outstanding REI customer service. But, Dillon REI has been an outrageous letdown. I've definitely had my issues with the store all around. But I was hoping to give it another go and get over the past they would not let the past go. I brought the bike in for some maintenance issues. They were unable to fix these. One of the maintenance issues I brought it in for and the bike was there for over two weeks was a flat tire and jumping gears I go to pick up the bike. The tire is still flat. I ride the bike the gear problem is still there. Horrendous service. I spoke with the store manager about my issues his immediate reply, go to another bike shop in the county. I explained I bought an REI bike so I didn't have to do that. He apologized and said I guess we're just not gonna be able to help you. This REI is not a standard REI. This REI location has gone above and beyond in multiple ways in the small amount of time that we worked with them and will definitely be returning for any ski fixes, deals and rentals in Summit County. 10/10 We bought a pair of skis and bindings in Denver and they didn't have the brake size for the skis we needed. We were also told that they could not complete mounting the skis in time to ski for New Years weekend so we were told to go to Dillon as they could do that. After driving over an hour to the Dillon location, they were closed because we were given the wrong hours. We were also told an incorrect timeframe but REI Dillon made sure that they worked to mount our skis in the timeframe originally given. Dylan and Owen in the ski shop were awesome. They were helpful throughout the process. After the REI Dillon ski shop had worked on our skis, we were informed that we were sold bindings too short for the skis we had purchased. Because of this, REI let us use a pair of demo skis for free for something that was not even their fault. After returning from skiing through the day, we found that the store had closed early and we caught some workers heading out for their plans. A dedicated manager and associate stayed late on New Year's Eve to help our rectify the situation. Not the best customer service. I came in with my one year old looking for warm clothes for both of us. Not sure if anyone knows what it's like to shop with a one year old... especially solo! It's hard, and the sales associate seemed annoyed. There were only 2 items close to her size. $120 jackets. read more

You cannot ask a person of the type of disability they have. B. Therefore you cannot say a dog is or isn't preforming some type of service work. This REI is on the smaller side, but they have everything that one could need to get outside. I'm happy to see them here in Dillon. I see people on this site whining about their prices being too high... I'm not sympathetic. If you don't like the price, don't buy it. Go spend your money acquiring the cheap Chinese crap at Walmart and Target, where service and experienced advice are also truly non-existent. REI is also taking extra precautions during the pandemic to keep people safe by managing store capacity. I, for one, will continue to bring my business to them. read more

What a great REI! The place looks awesome and you can find everything so easily. It's very conveniently located with plenty of parking. Plus the store opened at 9am the day I went. One of the staff member even came to us and handed a coupon for the promotion they were running at the time. Since I'm a member already it really pays off at the end! read more

Terrible customer service!!! I just bought 2 ArcTeryx ski clothing pieces that I was charged $25/each more than the tags. Then when I brought them back right away after getting to the car & looking at the tags & my receipt the same cashier was there and there was NO apology. I am a novice camper. Went to REI to look for gear and found a treasure, Bridges! He's an associate at the Dillon store and is a avid camper/ hiker. He made a couple of product recommendtions that turn out to be spot on. If you need camping gear and live in or near Dillon, Bridges is your guy. The store itself seems to be stocked well and the other team members I've interacted with have all been helpful. In fact that's how I was introduced to Bridges. I started asking a team member questions and they directed me to Bridges...... Great store, great people! read more

While I generally like REI and the personnel at this location are exceptional; I cannot recommend their ski shop. I had a set of skis tuned here and the edges machine cut and not hand filed or polished. I'm not sure what happened but my side edge bevel ranged from 0-3 degrees down the length of the ski. REI gave me a refund but another ski shop had to do a base grind to reset the base angle. I'm less than thrilled about having such a large amount of material removed from a new set of skis because of shorty work. In any case, it's a good retail store but a poor substitute for a ski shop. read more

By far the worst REI I've been in, let's just say they mark the prices up to obscene levels. Also, the staff must work for commissions because everything you already have is "out of date, dangerous, etc". The rental and repair shop should be classified as a criminal organization. They told me my skis were on a list where the manufacturer wouldn't allow them to work on them, then the dude said he couldn't work on my boots either, but they'd be glad to rent me some at an insanely high price. I went across the street, they looked on the most current list and my skis were not on there........hmmmmm. Please leave and bring Dick's back!!!!!!! read more

Went in for a compass for my 12 year old who was in Colorado hiking for the first time. Picked up a few others things. When we walked up to the registers they had displays of patches and a few others things we were browsing through one of the checkers would not stop asking us if we were ready to check out very rudely. When I finally said we are just looking to please have some patience he started arguing with me (seriously?) He also told a dad of a very young boy maybe 2 that he had to get a mask on him right now (when the regulations you looked up online for that county were 3 and up). If they require a mask for younger they should probably communicate that with the door person that let the man and boy in and put a sign up stating that outside their store. We put our merchandise down and left. Terrible experience due to one rude cashier. We love REI but won't ever return to this one. read more

Most employees are rude and unhelpful. Due to COVID restrictions the store has closed their fitting rooms which means more returns. Yet customers who are only going to store to make returns must stand in line with everyone else. Why can't they offer curbside returns? They have the technology. read more

I am so glad that REI is now in Dillon. I purchased my bike last spring and now just purchased ski boots. Dale is the best boot guy in Summit. An avid skier, he knows the sport well. As importantly, he knows boot technology. And best of all, he helps you out without his ego in the middle of the discussion. I recommend checking him out at REI if you are in the market for new boots. By the way, I ended up getting the Dalbello's. read more

I never am a person to write reviews, but I wanted to give a shout out to Andrew, he was SO helpful. My friends and I came into the store to get some gear for backpacking and had a million questions. He was so knowledgeable about everything REI had to offer plus told us where to go on our first trip (which was an amazing suggestion). We went back a week later for some more stuff and he remembered who we were and was happy to answer even more of our questions. I walked into this REI looking to buy a new backpack and get a proper fitting. I was expecting a quick, run-of-the-mill, rushed fitting by someone who didn't really know what they were talking about. Instead I was greeted by a guy named Bridges. Not only did he fit me for a backpack, but he took the time to help me find the PERFECT backpack. He was extremely knowledgable, kind, and patient. This was by far the best experience I have ever had at an REI store or any other outdoor store. read more

We shop at REI because they stand behind their products (and as we all know we pay more money for that service) ... or as we came to find out - they used to. Bought REI brand hiking poles with cork tops and one of the tops broke off when I was holding the pole (not even while using it). Clearly the product is defective as I only use the poles for one week each year (so 14 day total usage assuming we hiked every day). The store refused to exchange the broken pole saying their return policy had changed. These are REI poles. They made the product and won't stand behind it? To make matters worse the salesman announced to anyone in hearing range (a few times) that in all his years he had never seen that happen- insinuating I deliberately broke them or somehow mishandled them. This is not why I shop at REI and why I won't be shopping there again. So here's my review- if you want to buy defective product and then be blamed for it, shop here. Went back in to buy bindings and "Geir" helped me (pretty sure that was his name!... tall, brown hair, snowboard guy. I asked for a previous sales guy, Dale, but he wasn't in that day). Anyway, Geir was very knowledgeable about alpine touring (despite being a boarder) and easy to work with while making sure my binding choice would work with my specialty skis. As a matter a fact, everyone I interacted with at the tune and mount shop at this location were friendly with no ego at play (unlike many, many ski shops) and they were very well informed on the latest gear. REI continues to overprice their inventory, occasionally they'll have good deals on clearance items. This store in particular is getting a one star rating from me due to their repair shop. They will find way why they can't work on your equipment, but they'll gladly rent or sell you something! Just a quick price comparison proved even their equipment was priced well over their competitors literally across the street. After visiting the new Dillion store, REI is fully entitled to a five star review. Store is beautiful. Organized by activity so all your needs are met without wandering department to department, ie all camping is together, all backpacking, all skiing etc. and the customer service is exceptional as it is in all stores. What retailer has its employees search their competitors to meet a costumers desires, needs and abilities? Only REI! It's the reason we try to exclusively shop at REI in person and online. Yes, their prices sometimes are higher, but you get what you pay for. Their knowledge, member benefits of discounts, dividends and return policy are all worth it. Thank you REI and Tony! read more

I wanted a single bike rack for my car, but I wasn't sure which one. Tony helped me. He went out to my car and told me what kind of rack would fit and why. Even though Tony didn't have the exact single rack I needed, he demonstrated how they worked with a bike and similar double racks in the store, and explained the differences between them. I got a very solid Thule rack that folds up when the bike isn't in it. It's the difference between just buying something and feeling like I got exactly what I needed. read more

REI's lack of inventory at a number of store locations has bummed me out a lot over the past several years and during a recent experience at the Dillon, CO store really highlighted this. I've worked as an outdoor professional for several years (outdoor educator, ski patroller etc). I am also very passionate about backcountry skiing and mountaineering in my personal time. I know REI generally isn't going to have gear specific to, say high altitude mountaineering, and I tend to fill those types of gear requirements through online shopping. I get it. That's not where the money is made and most customers aren't looking for that type of thing. Every once in a while though, I'm in a pinch and will head to REI to pick up something more general. While preparing for a mountaineering trip to Alaska recently, I went to the REI in Dillon looking for a larger expedition duffel (bigger than 100L), glove liners, and water bottle insulators. None of those things (with the exception of a cheap bottle insulator that didn't cover the whole bottle) were in stock. They didn't have any sort of lightweight liner glove (or winter glove in general) in stock at a store that sits above 9,000 ft in Colorado in late April (which is when some of the best backcountry skiing is anyway). Fortunately, I was able to find all of the last minute items I needed at other stores in Summit County, CO and Anchorage. It often appears that REI's main thing is to be sort of a lifestyle store. It would be nice, however, if a little more attention was paid to stocking more specific or robust gear for longer trips and mountaineering, and other serious outdoor pursuits. I've been disappointed a lot in the last few years when trying to find stuff I usually think of as being fairly basic items (I was told climbing skin glue was "pretty specialized" in a Portland store). I guess I'm saying that I see a disparity between REI's self-representation as "believe[ing] a life outdoors is a life well lived" and what REI stores' inventories say about REI's priorities. I sent an email voicing these concerns to REI's customer service and got what seemed to be a form response that didn't look like anyone had really read it, so that was a bummer too. -Mike read more

Visited recently to get ski rentals for our whole family. The ski shop guys were AMAZING with getting our young kids outfitted with boots and skis. They arranged for our rentals to even be ready to pick up next time we're in going to the slopes. At the end several people working there even helped carry out the equipment to our car! This was really great service- especially as we'd just come from a different local "ski shop" that wasn't helpful at all. By far the best REI staff I've ever encountered- Really appreciated it!
