Great service and contrary to the few bad reviews I've been coming here for years and the staff and service is always top notch. The store is smaller than most REIs I've been to but packed full the the stuff I long after. I've waited in line sometimes but I'm patient.I always find what I want and if REI doesn't sell it they go out of their way to find it or tell you another retailer that has it. The staff was very friendly, and specifically Tony assisted me in mounting my bike to the back of my car while my baby son was crying so he deserves a shout out. I am not sure what to say now about this company. I had a very bad experience in their store. I feeling as if they increase their prices just when they put their name on something. I can find most things online cheaper with the same or better quality. So now I can go to their store try something on if need be and check on line prices before I purchase anything. Bought the Yakima baseline tower and hd bar from here. Bought all 3 things they said I need the clips, the towers and the bar. I get home to put it together and find out I still need to buy the adapter in order to mount the tower to the bar. I asked my sales guy "so this is everything I need?" After spending about $700 on the whole system and waiting OVER AN HOUR while they tried to figure this whole system out. Later, after ordering the adapter kit on Amazon, I finally have everything and start putting it together. Easy breezy for the first half. Then I go to put it on the car and it's a nightmare. The clips are too short. Yes I read the instructions very diligently. Someone really dropped the ball there too, either it's Yakima or someone sold me the wrong size clips. Either way I attached it to the car using my own measurements. They are a bit close together but it'll do. Just wanted to put the headache behind me. I'll say everyone I dealt with was friendly and kind but god the lack of competence was rather frustrating. Would have been better off ordering it all myself online. Not the first time I've felt that way at REI. read more

finally, an alternative to big 5 and the "boutique" outdoor gear stores! i have nothing against either. i love going through big 5's random crap section, and i wholeheartedly trust the folks at josselyn's with my bike (though i pay up the nose for repairs). i like this place because they have all the mid range to high end stuff you can't find at the discount retailers that are aplenty, and everything is all in one place. i was able to get a snowboarding jacket, cold weather gear, rock climbing chalk, and bike parts in one trip. the staff isn't so knowledgeable about the stuff. So I do my homework and I know my gear. Bought two bike lights but they only had one in stock. At the register to take advantage of the sale ,I Purchased 2 and one Was to be shipped to store location. 15 minutes later I received an email that it had arrived.?. This is my first hint that they were trying to pass off the floor model. I went in to get it, now I know these lights come from the factory with no charge and there is a toggle switch you have to hold down for seven seconds to turn on the light to prevent it from turning on during shipping and in a backpack. So I turn on the light and it turns on, no holding a toggle, no need to charge. Hands-down no question a floor model. I had 2 REI employees with major attitude, arguing with me that it was not. They were rude. Sorry I know my gear, I do my research, I know what I'm talking about. Sorry REI, I've been a member forever, I love your products, I love your store, but your employees today where just flat rude and have no customer service skills. Cheers read more

They have all the high end backpacking gear you need and some affordable options as well. Customer service is excellent. Very knowledgeable and friendly. The no question return policy is convenient and awesome. If you are not completely satisfied with your purchase just return it and test something else. The bike department is pretty cool too with a good amount of maintenance supplies. read more

Great selection of gear, no matter what sport is yours! The staff knows all kinds of helpful stuff, and they are always willing to help you. The stuff is a little pricer than Outdoor world. Also they offer workshops and classes, so you can learn more or start an new sport. read more

This past weekend (and on many other days) my family and I stopped into REI to grab some training gear for an Extreme Hike that we will be participating in in October. As many trips to this fabulous location go, we purchased way more than we expected. This was due to the incredible team service by three members in particular : Danny, Lauren, and Lance. These three assisted members of my family, not knowing that we were related but approaching us all in the same professional and knowledgeable manner. They delivered exceptional service, which is to be expected, but is not necessarily always delivered at an esteemed establishment such as REI. I conversed with Lauren regarding wetsuits. She talked about different thickness options and why I would want fuller coverage due to depth and temperature while maintaining full mobility. My sister is heading to Paraguay in March to start her Peace Corps journey, so she was looking for a suitable backpack. Team member, Danny, assisted in this decision making process by introducing various weights as well as sizes to compare models of packs. She ended up with an Osprey, a company that is represented on many Hunziker Family Hikes. Lance has assisted our family on multiple occasions, but in this instance he was able to compile items that I was intending to donate to a women's shelter as a care package. He was able to bounce ideas around with me, and this enabled me to make the proper and informed decision to have a great care package that was able to be donated proudly. Once again, I wanted to thank the team at REI for all they do and for getting my family back into outdoor activities. Ugh..... I like REI in that it has the stuff I need. I just wish there was locally owned places like this. I am a member, I love going here. But it's kinda like Best Buy. You have to go in knowing what you want. That isn't to say that there isn't experts that work here, but for the most part it's average labor. I really like REI but disappointed by the prices and the fact that the products are made in China. I remember it not being the case in the past. When I checked out with my purchase I mentioned my Dad's membership (normally 10 percent off) and they inputted the info but never told me that the discount couldn't be used for my purchase. We love this REI store... we live in Pebble Beach and this is the first REI store we have gone into. We spent hours in the store, and were BLOWN away by the staff. They were all so knowledgeable and willing to assist us, and just happy to be there. I could not get over how passionate and knowledgeable they ALL were about so many different subjects and products. From hiking boots to tents to walking sticks to cots to water purifiers to binoculars to go-pros, and even socks! Yes socks! We love how much time each employee spent with us educating us on what we needed and helping us navigate the selections to ensure we got the right products. I have NEVER in my life been in a retail store that impressed me this much. They should be the template, the standard, by which all retailers manage their customer experience and employee training programs. I would give them 10 stars if I could. Just amazing! Oh and I love the whole non-corporate co-op approach... that might be part of why they are so amazing... either way, I am now a life long fan and loyal customer! read more

I purchased a bike here about two weeks ago. I am a long time REI customer and every time I go to REI I am reminded of why. The customer service is great, on this particular visit the staff in the bike department were extremely helpful and the guy doing the tune-ups took time away from his tools to answer every question that my daughter (11) and I asked. I'm going to start by saying I love REI, and every time I've gone into a store, every location, the employees have been very friendly and helpful. I visited this particular REI once about a week ago. I was just browsing for some good quality trail running shoes. Joan in the shoe department was assisted me shopping, and she was SO helpful! She gave me plenty of input on what to look for in good trail running shoes, how they should feel when I run, and she brought out multiple sizes for me to test to see what was truly best. I didn't make a purchase that day because I just went in to get an idea of what I like and what size is best, but I do know if it wasn't for her I would end up buying the wrong size! Bought a $3000 bike here. I love the bike. But, the best part is the people that work in the bike shop are exceptional​ at their craft. I have had nothing but top-notch​ service from them. The other bike shops I​ have visited do not compare​. When I first purchased my bicycle they told me at REI that they would go the mile to help me get it to fit to my specifications. And so began the journey of many trips back and forth to the store because my right leg is handicap and has limited motion. They took components off of my old bike and made them fit on the new bike and it was very professional the way it was done :-) :-) . Today I made the final trip to the storeTo correct the fitment of my newly extended seat post into the frame of the bike. As usual they were successful in their efforts and I proceeded to have a very enjoyable and comfortable ride. I must say these guys are really good not only do they know their stuff about bicycles but their interpersonal skills truly excel in that on certain occasions I was not in the best of moods and yet they took me in stride and never dropped their pace. These guys are a great team and they have made a customer in me for life. BTW my new bike is a Novara Buzz highbred and its perfect :-) :-) :-) they wouldn't even accept a tip read more

My fiancé and I had our hybrid bikes stolen so we decided it was time for an upgrade we spent two days shopping at REI receiving all the help we could ask for and were able to find the perfect bikes for us! The first day we came right before closing and were still allowed to test drive two bikes! I was sold and bought mine that night, they held onto it for me overnight. The next day my fiancé found a bike that was perfect for him. We also realized that we would need some extra gear like a new bike pump, u-locks, a bike rack and even some riding shoes. We found everything that we were looking for and were so impressed by the guys in the bike shop! We we're helped by a couple different people and they all seemed very knowledgeable one guy even came out to make sure we installed our bike rack correctly. We had such a fun shopping experience, and are enjoying our bikes so much!!! We could not be more happy read more

Have been an REI member over ten years. This store is a bad apple as a reviewer stated. If you know what you want, shop online and get a better deal. If you need personalized attention this store does have staff that can aid you in finding the item that fits your needs. BEWARE, they do not honor promotions from emails, even when their store is listed as participating. All of the staff is not on the same page as corporate. read more

I worked with Megan, Rachel, and Jacob in the cycling department at the Marina, Ca location. I am not an experienced cyclist and was unsure what I was looking for. I initially worked with Rachel who provided extremely informative input on what kind of bike would be best for the places that I want to bike. She advised me against one that I had originally been looking at because it was discontinued and the last one was the wrong size for me. She then directed me to the Co-Op CTY and DRT bikes that were both within my budget and appeared to have everything I needed. She also pointed out that there was one on clearance(previously owned) that was 15% off. I came back a day later as it was raining fairly hard and I couldn't/didn't want to test ride it. I was then assisted by Megan who allowed me to test the fit of the bike in store and assisted me with test riding it in a nearby portion of the parking lot. It was a great experience but I wanted to take a couple of days to discuss it with my wife. I came back the next day and was assisted by Rachel and Jacob. Jacob set me up with the clearance bike(Co-Op CTY 2.2) as well as a kickstand and water bottle holder. He then installed them and assisted us in finding road tires for my wifes bike(An older Trek). We walked out of the store with the Bike(with Kickstand and Waterbottle holder), a new bike seat, road tires and accompanying tubes, and the tools necessary to change the tires myself. Jacob did some final checks on the bike and installed the water-bottle holder and kickstand for me. I cannot say how great of an experience this was and how grateful I am that REI has all of these great resources in store. I strongly recommend going to this location and discussing options with the staff. I was never pressured to buy anything and felt like I walked out with everything that I needed to have a great riding experience. Thank you Rachel, Megan, and Jacob. read more

Nice medium sized REI with a selection of equipment that matched local activities. Well kept with a good range of prices. The only downside is that they carry very little in the way non local outdoors equipment (mountain climbing, snow sports, water sports, etc). It doesn't bother me too much, but it might bother some. I'm guessing they stock what sells and are trying to do the best they can with the space they're given. My only other complaint is that the shoe selection is kinda slim. They've got a large foot ware area but only stock two or three of any given style. read more

What an incredibly complete store! It is well stocked with excellent product and is thoroughly staffed by friendly, professional staff. It is a bit of a drive from Santa Cruz, but at least I am unable to spend as much because of the distance I don't go there so often. read more
