i consider myself somewhat of a massage connoisseur (self-appointed) and enthusiast. i LOVE getting massages and i love getting them often. it's become somewhat of my life's mission to find the best massage spots and there are a number of options on smith st alone. i've been too many on this street, and while to newbies to the no frills massage experience might overlook relaxation garden as it is one of the older, more no frill-y places than its competitors down the street (ie bergen spa), i can confidently say this is the best one. yes, bergen spa is newer, perhaps maybe even more "spa"-like, however service is always hit-or-miss. relaxation garden is my go-to in the area and i've not once left disappointed. most recently, alice revived my tense, cramped neck to full functionality and i can now turn my head 360-degrees like a night owl after several nights of sleeping on it wrong. i like my massages, strong and hard - some people might even consider it painful. but for me, no pain, no gain. i want to leave the massage table equally relieved that my muscles have been de-knotted and relieved that the massage is over (lol jk, but you get my point). anyways, the service here is consistently good and they actually listen when i ask to focus on a specific part of my body. my only complaint is that relaxation garden isn't all that relaxing when it comes to noise. they don't really make an effort here to keep the noise down - the employees talk to each other through the dividers and i've often times been awoken from my half-asleep blissful state bc there are two employees speaking extremely loudly to each other in the front area. however, i refuse to give them anything less than 5 stars bc they deserve as much business as possible bc they've been here longer than most other massage businesses in the area and they always do a good job. read more

I have been craving a good massage and stopped into Relaxation Garden as I wandered down Smith Street one Saturday afternoon. I didn't have an appointment and as luck would have it, Susan was available. We walked right back into a little private room. The salon is very clean and I loved the soft relaxing music. Susan was fantastic. I will always ask for her from now on when I return! Often during massages I find myself in pain but Susan used just the right amount of strength that I can feel a difference yet also still felt tranquil and at ease. She has great massage technique and I easily could have laid there for longer! Very reasonable price, too! I paid $50 for a 60 minute massage (30 back and 30 feet). This place is great, tried to call and make a reservation but couldn't get through, so just did a walk in for 3 people for an hour massage no problem. A typical tiny establishment the staff was so friendly, nice and accommodating. Not to mention the quality of the massage was awesome. They do take credit card which is a plus and also had a deal if you bought 3 one hour massages the price dropped from $55 a massage to $45. I don't often find myself needing to go to a massage place like Relaxation Garden, which I would place as "everything is wrong in my life and I need total body care." I usually find myself going to get massages to pamper myself or to go to a specialist to get a more knowledgeable, targeted care. But I went through a stressful few weeks, and no matter the amount of sleep I was getting, it was not restful and I could feel my entire body was tense. In a last minute decision, I decided to try Relaxation Garden because I've walked by this place for years, and there's a reason they're still in business, right? Messaged the business on Yelp to see if they had a 2 hour opening that night, and the owner, Ben, responded in less than 10 minutes, I was in! When my appointment came, the manager handling customers was very straight to the point (and I've a feeling walkins are always welcome) and directed me into a room in less than a minute. I've had very awkward experiences with whether or not to leave clothes on (I like to go down to underwear, but you know, some masseuse don't), so I kept my clothes on. Jenny came in, asked me how many hours and then told me to take my clothes off (sweet!) and get under the sheet and then left me alone to do so. She came back quickly and started off really gently. Slightly too gently. I was getting worried. I've been to fancy places where I swear it feels like the masseuses worry about hurting their glass clientele or something. Also...I don't know, there's a way some masseues touch you that I just love - like their touches are getting to know your body rather than going through the rote "massage schedule" motions they have, and Jenny very much had the latter touch. At first. But then she started working me a bit harder, finding specific knots here and there and while not at the pressure I like, I figured I was in here to have my entire body relax and not to work on anything specific, so I didn't say anything. I felt I was on my stomach for for 3/5 of the time, and the other 2/5 on my tummy. And the two hours, she really worked my entire body - head to toe (though head and feet were near the end of the massage and I wished they were longer), and it was glorious. I fell asleep for maybe 10 minutes of it. At the end, I my body was entirely relaxed and since then, have been able to get more restful sleep. She's a very kind lady with ridiculously soft hands (when she was massaging my hands, I felt like I had sandpaper hands compared to hers). It was $90 for 120 minutes and I've been holding myself back from going back to her too quickly, because while the prices are really great, I can't be burning through cash like that. read more

I was able to book a 1 hour couples massage on Valentine's Day. They were super nice when I called on the phone. They accept card and cash. It is pretty outdated inside, but LET ME TELL YOU! It was the best massage I have ever gotten. I'm sad I didn't get my masseuse's name. I feel like she was looking and focusing on all of my knots and really got in there. No frill, AMAZING massage place. My boyfriend and I love going and getting a couples massage in the very back. The massage itself is great. $50 for an hour! Can't beat that. Ive had two really aweful experiences here. The first, the woman massaging me asked me 3 times to extend my time (mind you I was already at an hour ) and went so far as to ask if Id stop my massage to run into another room to ask my friend if he wanted to extend his time too. It was the most un- relaxing experience of my life. There is nothing worse than paying someone to relieve tension only to have it brought back on by them hussling you for money. I finally let her have it after the third time and after i explained how after the first no it should have been enough. The second bad experience ( I shouldnt have gone back but I wanted to like this place) The woman massaging me had the hands of a weak five year old. The massage was so soft and bad that I could have massaged myself better. When I asked for it a little harder she didn't listen and just kept verry gently rubing me, after an hour when I emerged from the massage room. They were all gossiping and laughing at me in chinese- NOT COOL. Talk shit after the customer leaves. It was so clear that I asked them why they were laughing at me and the man (who appears to be the owner) just shooed me away with his hand. A one hour full-body massage for $55. You can't beat it. For $55, you won't be getting any walls--just partitions--but at least they are considerate. They walked gently in the "hallway" and spoke softly at the front, which is separated from the massage area. The massage was so good that I almost fell asleep. They were professional and courteous. They schedule appointments over the phone but do not honor them, even after they admit it was a mistake on their part to take someone else in your place. It is first come, first serve, with little regard for who they've confirmed specific time slots to over the phone. It seems more a function of disorganization than language barrier. In some ways it's better because there's a little more privacy with the dividers. If you've experienced these "cheap" asian massage places then you should already know you it's not about the ambiance (water noises and generic forest noises) but they get the job done. If your muscles are tight, have a stiff knot, this is the place. I've been going to the same lady and have taken friends and family from out of town and they love it too. I went here on Thanksgiving day and saw they were having a special ($45/hour, what what!) so my boyfriend and I got Thanksgiving massages. The lady who did my massage was either really bony or really forceful, but sometimes that's a good thing I guess. After time was up and we paid and left, I asked my boyfriend how his massage was and he said, "Well......she sure got up in my creases." Long story short, during the massage he was a little worried about what would happen if she asked him to turn over onto his back (but she didn't). Then when we went home to take a shower to get all the massage oil grease off, my BF pointed out that I had big bruises on my back from the massage. Guess my lady was really bony AND really forceful! I'd go back, but def speak up if it's painful (or if you think you're about to get molested). And don't plan to wear a backless dress or anything afterward. read more

Seriously phenomenal. Like one of the reviewers below said, they don't ask you about your injuries and individual requirements before they start working on it. But it doesn't matter, because even on my first visit, their intuitive knowledge of my back and body was *that* good. Many of the massage therapists I've visited either go too hard (getting out the knots, but leaving me in pain and not exactly relaxed) or, less often, too easy (a nice slice of relaxation, but no real difference in how you feel afterwards. Relaxation Garden was the perfect middle ground, though. My therapist spent a good amount of time warming up, mapping out the knots and nicks on my body and getting me relaxed, and then got to work on the deep tissue; identifying tension points I never knew I had, but keeping the deep tissue work nicely mixed up with the more relaxing, lighter massage. I don't think I've had a massage this good since I used to see an osteopath. And as others have mentioned, at $55 for an hour, the price ain't half bad, either. read more

If you've been to a fair share of massage houses you'll be pleased to hear this. The massage is standard affair. That is, especially relaxing after a long day at work. For those who are nervous about getting a massage, don't be! For some reason in the USA these kind of Asian massage parlors get a negative connotation (you know what I'm talking about). But it's not like that. All you're going to get is a relaxing time, and is well worth it. I absolutely recommend coming to the relaxation garden for your body relaxation (and mental relaxation needs). I called ahead to book an appointment (although walk-ins are also welcome), and I found out through yelp, that I could get an extra 10 minutes free (if I checked in, which I did promptly). I came late due to traffic, but they happily led me to my room as soon as I walked in. If you do choose the free 10 minutes make sure to tell them before you walk in. The massage was mind blowing. I worked with Li It was as if she knew every thing that was wrong with my body. It's been a few months since my visit, but I'm happy to be going again later today, it was that memorable. A wonderful price for a world of peace and relaxation. I went again recently, and worked with someone named Eric (I believe). I've never had a male work on my knots before but I have to say, he was able to apply pressure to certain spots that no one had ever found before (like my arms, such a weird and cool experience).
