This place is great. I came as a walk in on a Saturday morning. It's a small place with very comfortable massage beds separated by curtains. I got a 60 minute deep tissue massage and 10 minutes of reflexology. Not much background noise, although I did hear someone burping lol. I asked for a male masseuse, and the guy I got was very strong and extremely skilled. He even incorporated some light stretching. My only real complaints are the amount of time spent massaging me over the towel feeling kind of long, and that he didn't have me turn over to massage me while I was on my back. Just a note, the Yelp check in for 5% off only applies if you pay with cash, and there is no ATM on site. I came in with soooo much tension and feel awesome now. I'll definitely be back. read more

Ive been going to sunshine on and off for about 15 years, and since i moved a bit closer about 10 years ago, i've been taking my sorry back in about every 4-6 weeks. that's many visits over the years! Knocking off one star from an otherwise rock solid 5 due to some small things: * There is one 1-star review that recently got posted in which the yelper says she was recorded during the massage w/o her consent. This yelper has no other reviews or connections on Yelp and may not be legit/ may be a competitor, or she may be a real person whose privacy was violated. I can't tell, but if she's real, this is a huge flag worth noting. * It's low frills. If you don't know that going in, you may be disappointed. Part of my reason for posting this review is to let folks know what to expect so that you won't be disappointed. "Low frills" = booths, not rooms- you will hear your neighbors breathing and sighing, and you will hear the reception person answering the phone and scheduling appointments. Sometimes you will hear the toilet flush. No impact on stars, but things you should know: Sometimes people don't realize that there is a pricing difference for cash vs card- they incentivize cash w a discount. Don't expect the discount if you're paying w a card. The fees they have to pay are in the price charged to cc customers. They prefer tips in cash. That is common in the industry, b/c tips that are paid by credit card get taxed, meaning the workers get less. If you must tip by card, tip extra high. Areas where they really EARN their stars: * the massages. I've been going there for yeaaaars and had many different staff over the years, and they've all offered so much relief. Most of the masseuses have read my body really well- whether I'm going in just feeling exhausted and run-down, whether i have tension from sitting too much to hit my deadlines for work, or whether I'm nursing an injury or strain from exercise or sports, they just know what to do, every time. Once i went in after not having been in for a few months due to deadlines and work commitments, and the stress in my body was so crazy-- the guy put his hands on my neck and then said "oh my god!" -- and rearranged the table so he could get more traction and apply more force. He used physics and gravity as much as his hands that day, and i am *still* grateful. Migraine? Hangover? Shoulder pull? Half-marathon muscle fatigue? Painful workload causing tension in body and brain? Whatever i have gone in there carrying, they have sorted out. 15 years or relief, my friends. 15! * lymphatic massage option. This is a little more expensive and i don't always get this, but it's been helpful during allergy seasons where I'm feeling congested and muggy inside. Also helpful - at least for me- after I've had a week with too much rich food or alcohol (holidays, weddings, graduations etc). Women, please note: there is a focus on frontal contact for a lymphatic massage- there is energy directed to heart and to belly. They also get into your armpit lymph nodes a bit. if you're hypersensitive or ticklish or shy about sternum/chest work, you should know this before you book a lymphatic treatment. * pricing. Their prices are incredible for what you get. They've raised prices a bit over recent years b/c of the insane cost of living and MTA fare hikes over recent years, and I've heard some grumbling about that, but come on, people. Nyc is expensive and they need to be able to live here, too. The value is still incredible. As i mentioned before, cash is cheaper; cash tips are strongly preferred. * scheduling & availability. They work hard to accommodate you, whether you call ahead or are going in as a walk-in (I'm usually staggering in as a walk-in unless i specifically want a lymphatic massage- i call ahead for those so they can get the right person in). If you walk in and they don't have enough people to get you in right away, they call someone in from one of their nearby locations and can usually get you into a booth within 10 minutes. The only time they can't accommodate right away is if their booths are filled- peak times, as far as I've observed, are about 5-8pm on weeknights and weekends about 12-8, though sometimes couples book couples massages on weekends and it can stay busy until about 9. Idk, there are lusher places, and there are similar or lower-frills places - there are a lot of options out there. But Sunshine is the one i choose, and which i have chosen more often than not for the last 15 years. I recommend them to anyone who uses Qi gong tui na massage work to take care of themselves on an "ongoing maintenance" type schedule. No, you don't get lavender oils and cucumber slices or a room all to yourself, but yes, you will get a great massage at a price tag that you might be able to afford more regularly. PLEASE BE AWARE: I was secretly filmed by a male member of staff during my massage at Sunshine Best Bodywork. This was my regular massage location (the Park Slope AND Williamsburg location). I have been maybe 5x in total. During the massage I hear the sound of video recording and look up to see his phone on the shelf above. When my boyfriend and I confronted him, he tried to leave, then was on his phone quickly swiping through videos and images to delete what he had recorded of me. I demanded to look through his phone but by the time I had his phone he had deleted it. I did check his hidden folder and it was full of screenshots of massage porn as well as massage photos / videos at the massage parlour. The other staff tried to say he was listening to music but he did not have headphones in. I reported it to the police and there is an ongoing investigation. If you have been massaged by a male member of staff at this business and something untoward happened then I'd encourage you to speak to the police too. The police confirmed that this was the second report of this happening in park slope in the last month (at another location) but this is a real issue happening. Be aware and find another location with certified massage therapists. I will not make the same mistake read more

5/5 WOW! I was around the corner getting my toes done (already treating myself) and thought wow, why not go all the way and get a massage too? I found this spot through Yelp and wowwowowow I'm so glad I decided to go. The spot is small so don't be shocked! I think there's like rooms in like a 600 sq ft small area divided by curtains - you can hear everything going on and while I was getting my massage, in the next "room" I could feel the masseuse walking around because my feet would brush up against their body as they were passing by. But the beds and rooms are super clean and the best part is, they don't play terrible, loud "spa music" that a lot of these no-frills massage spots play. I asked for someone strong and they put me with Jim. He should change his name to Jesus because I saw the light. Maybe because it hurt like hell or maybe because right afterwards, I felt like a NEW NEW person. I'm not going to lie to you, it hurt like hell though. But I knew I needed it - I hate going into one of these spots and you ask for them to get your knots and go hard but it feels like they are massaging you with tiny Trump hands. Jim focused on the areas I requested, calves and shoulders and today, the next day, my calves have never felt so relieved. The 60 minute massage (45 min body + 15 min foot) exceeded my expectations! The beginning massage was a simple massage and then the deep massage/pain begins afterwards. I just went here for the first time after reading so many great reviews. This is not your typical massage place. Very low key, tiny curtained off rooms and no frills. You can hear the people in the next "room," the numerous cell phones that people forgot to turn off, the credit card machine and even some noise from outside. The music is very low so you may want headphones or earplugs if you're bothered by it. The massage was very good. Out of my 60 min, 55 was pure pain. I felt like I went through the meat grinder, but it was worth it. After I walked out of my "room" I accidentally walked into someone else's curtain. Be aware that may happen to you in you're in one of the back 2 rooms. They face each other and you have to leave through corner. I used the 5% yelp coupon which saved me about $3.75 in a 60 min massage. You have to use cash if you want the discount. After paying, I have my girl the $5 cash I had left in my wallet for a tip. Rather than telling them where to work on, the first 10mins works as a kind of diagnostic period that determines the time & treatment for the remaining time. I've come to this place twice and plan to come back again. I have worked with Coco both times and hope to continue to see her. Not only is she very precise with her work, she seems to have a great sense of awareness when it comes to tighter spots on your body. Both experiences were similar in that she makes time for the entire body, but different in that she notices what spots are holding more tension and spends more time on those areas. As a part time student, part time physiotherapy assistant, and part time personal trainer, I also have a good understanding of the body and what works best for musculoskeletal relief. Coco knows exactly how to apply pressure from origin to insertion of the muscle, applies the right amount of pressure, and knows how to rotate your shoulder in order to access the deep muscles within the shoulder blade. She notices when I am particularly ticklish or tender and will adjust her pressure accordingly, and I really appreciate that. The place itself is small and by the street, so if your appointment is close to when school ends you will hear children laughing and playing, but the service is still five stars. You also may hear a snore or sniffle from your neighbor because everybody is so relaxed coming here! If I had more clients in Brooklyn, I would refer them here. The massage tables also have memory foam toppers on them, which makes them delightfully comfortable to lay on and also helps prevent you from having an awkward red circle on your face when you finally get up. If you don't mind noise here and there. This is the place for you. If this is your first deep tissue massage I recommend booking one hour first and then the more you come back you can book how ever long you'd like. I do wish she'd consulted me on area where I was feeling pain before jumping right in but she did get the job done. As someone who is a bit of a massage junkie, I don't think I've had a better massage anywhere in the world. I've been going for about four years now, once a month. Every time I go, I get an excellent deep-tissue massage by clearly well trained staff, both male and female. I've gone when I've had a slipped disc and I've gone when I've just needed a relaxing massage from back stress. Whatever the reason, the massages are first rate and the rates are extraordinarily reasonable. The atmosphere is not entirely what you'd expect, but don't let that stop you. The "rooms" are separated by curtains, like in a hospital. You can hear the person next to you whispering "thank you!" and you can hear when people come in and out of the shop or when the phone rings. But there's relaxing music and it all fades away when the hot stones are rubbed up and down your sore back, leave you quivering like jelly. One general tip: i think it's a good idea to give your masseur or masseuse feedback, whether it's too light or too hard or just right. They are not mind-readers! Help them help you. All these details should let you know, that I am probably the world's most low maintenance woman ever. People like me would never dream of spending a lot of money on a "spa experience". This place is EXACTLY what you were looking for if you just wanted a really good massage, for relatively cheap, without the bells, whistles, and costly extras that come from those "Barbie Spa" type places. No. No one is giving you a seaweed facial. There aren't rose petals on the message tables. There is not one scented candle to be found. No one is telling you what lotions to use to get rid of your cankles. If you want that go pay, 800 dollars for your Barbie Spa experience. At Sunshine, you get a really good back, leg and foot massage done on a clean table, with no frills white sheets. The "room" is actually a little booth sectioned off by a room divider made of rice paper. There is no mood lighting and you can hear every whisper and moan from your neighbors. These things won't bother you 15 minutes into your massage when the capable hands of Steven or one of the others is manipulating your sore tissues into ecstasy. 1 hour costs you about 55$ Its worth every penny. Owwwwwwww! I have had tui na sessions for over 20 years. I went to Sunshine based on the reviews. I'm pretty sure that I am headed to 8 weeks of physical therapy. My masseuse seemed to concentrate on bone rather than muscle. Yeah, I was pretty tight so maybe she couldn't tell the difference. Not. The session was excruciating, not in the good way. The open door was about 8 feet from my bare butt on a 50 degree day. I was in serious pain for 2 days. Couldn't go to the gym for a week. And now have developed what feels suspiciously like a pinched nerve in my spine. Hard to walk upright more than 10'. There has GOT to be a better tui na experience in Brooklyn. Stay away!! Disappointing. I forewent my normal Chinese massage place, Relaxing on Smith, in lieu of Sunshine because it was closer. Big mistake. While they were able to take me right away, the massage was half %$# and not worth my time. First of all the place is tiny, the little stalls separated by white cloth even tinier, and there are 2-3 staff sitting in the front, stage-whispering the entire time. It's really distracting. I have very achey shoulders & neck and asked the masseuse to focus on those, but she did not respond. The main point of going to a Tui Na place is to get a really firm pressure massage! This was so light it was like a bad aromatherapy massage. I asked her "can you please go harder" and she didn't respond and did nothing. (Language barrier?) I asked again a few minutes later and she said "no hard?" and then went even more softly! So I decided to suck it up and just get out of there as soon as possible. Every time she went near a knot or pressure point she backed off entirely- so frustrating! So I made the mistake of asking one more time, and she made a noise of exasperation and uttered a long string of what sounded like fightin words in Chinese. Then finally she went a bit harder, but only in spots where it doesn't feel good- and with the point of her elbow- in my side/ribs, inside of my upper arm, etc. Vengeance. For the remaining half hour of the massage she just raked her knuckles back and forth on my back as hard as she could. Awful. But I couldn't say anything because she already hated me. read more

Shady business practices: After reading great reviews of this place here, I decided to go for it. The actual massage was pretty good, painful at times, but maybe that's what my knots needed. The hot stones at the end were nice. Then the up-sell comes: the woman says, "your 60 minutes are up, would you like a foot massage for 15 more minutes ($15 more)?). Begrudgingly, I agreed. Since she hadn't done my feet yet, what was I going to say? :-) Then I go to pay, and I hand her $80 for the $70 bill. I told her to keep the change, thinking I was being magnanimous. She kind of pushes the $10 back and tells me, "we only accept 20% tip." Huh?! I stood there dumbfounded. I didn't want to make a scene since there are other customers there getting massages behind their flimsy little screens. But at that point I should have just taken my change and walked out. So I ask her to clarify. Three times. Yes, she says, I have to pay $14 more. 20% tip. Mandatory. So somehow a $55 massage turned into an $84 massage. Not cool. I opened the door, sat down and was greeted by someone's bare ass being kneaded. The masseuse was too busy trying to see who was coming in because there was no receptionist, so the customer's curtain was pretty open. This place has partitions, not walls, which is par for the course for a $55 one-hour massage. But the space is so small that there is no privacy and you hear everything. My masseuse just couldn't get the pressure right and basically outlined my bones, which hurt. Alternately, she just rubbed in lotion. I guess I was ashy. *Shrugs.* Then she broke out these stones that felt like they had been heated in the bowels of hell by Hades himself. I hadn't asked for a hot-stone massage, but I guess it was my lucky day. Ouch! She stopped during my massage at one point to chitchat with another masseuse, yelling in Mandarin or Cantonese the whole time. I got up exasperated and she then apologized. I almost gagged when I flipped over and saw the pillow she had used to prop up the back of my head. It was dingy and uncovered. The bathroom was gross and had some type of machine (I have no idea what purpose it served) in between the toilet and the sink, further cramping the small space. I went home and bathed with Hibiclens. Yep, I'm a mild hypochondriac; it was totally warranted this time! To be fair, I went here on Valentine's Day. I initially wanted a reflexology foot massage for 30 minutes but the workers seemed nice, so I decided to throw in an additional 30 minutes of Tui Na. The reflexology was amazing and I couldn't keep myself from falling asleep. However, Tui Na was rather painful and I didn't enjoy it. While laying on the table I had my mind made up that I would visit Sunshine at least once per month for a one hour reflexology. However, that ALL changed while settling my bill. Unfortunately, the girl who gave me the massage informed me that a 20% tip was mandatory. My final bill was $55... I was paying with a debit card so that was increased to $57. I was fine with that. I told her that I had some cash on me and would leave the tip in cash. I took out $6 and she pointed to my debit receipt and said that the tip had to be the amount printed (which was $8). The two extra bucks wasn't gonna kill me so I gave it to her.... But I thought that insisting on 20% was rude. It really put a bad taste in my mouth and I won't be returning. The best deep tissue massage I've received since moving to NY. I went there on a Sunday around 3p.m. for a 60 minute/$55 massage and no other customers were there. So it was very quiet and relaxing. Amy was my therapist and she knew exactly what she was doing. She is a tiny wisp of a woman but strong as Hercules and sweet as apple pie. I'm usually not a fan of hot stones, but I rather enjoyed them this time. I enjoyed the massage so much that I tacked on an extra 15 minutes so for foot work. I'm giving this place 5 stars for the quality of massage I received. Maybe 3 or 4 stars for decor because of the paper screens between clients. But let me say, I've paid a whole lot more for a whole lot less by going to day spas for massage. The day spa has the trappings of luxury, but this place has the massage technique you want to receive. Being that I'm interested in qigong and acupuncture I was worried I might be disappointed and this place might not be legit tui na. I can say that the pressure points used on my back and my feet were legit. The massage therapist did some amazing work on knots in my middle back (with her knees!). Tui na is not for everyone. If you are looking for the Swedish massage experience you might be a bit surprised by tui na. But if you like a good deep tissue sports massage, tui na is that with a bit of good qigong, energy healing thrown in for getting your qi flowing. And don't underestimate the efficacy of a good foot massage, in case you are thinking about it. I waited for about 5 minutes, by the way. I was sort of surprised how busy they were. But I guess it's a best kept secret in the neighborhood. (and now I'm blabbing on Yelp for everybody to see.) Sorry guys!
