The boardwalk to the road was unusable and while cordoned off for safety didn't have any repairs during our stay. The beach walkway is a joke, and dangerous. The hot, made to order breakfast we'd enjoyed in 2024 was an embarrassment. Sunday morning's breakfast consisted of two small round store-bought waffles and a flaccid, microwaved piece of something unlike bacon. We chose to skip breakfast on Monday and Tuesday mornings and pay to eat elsewhere. In general, the inn appears to be falling to ruin. The bathroom floor was sticky and clearly unclean. The mini-fridge froze our sodas. We never saw any innkeeping staff on premises other than the nice young man who brought us our breakfast on Sunday morning. The quality of the food was not his fault; clearly, the days of having a cook make special breakfasts of the day are a thing of the past. What in the world has happened? Side of the refrigerator has good amount of rust. The icemaker didn't work. The showers had decent water pressure and they have nice soap products. The food at the restaurant was good. The crabcake was good portion and tasty and the vegetable medley had excellent flavor. I was overcharged when I arrived for what my confirmation said. Hopefully that has been straightened out with my bill when I check out. There was an issue with the elevator the one morning as the employee said it wasn't working. This other lady who looked like a manager, was asking other guests about the elevator. When I told her that is your employee with the supply cart and he's been standing at the elevator and it's not working. She's responded to me saying "I don't know him. I don't know what's going on. I don't know about another elevator. I'm new here. This is my first day." Really? You start your first day on Easter Sunday and you had no training? There is another elevator, but apparently that's been out of order for many months. The oceanfront location and easy beach access are fantastic, and the outdoor pool area is amazing with plenty of comfortable seating. They also have an indoor pool, hot tub, and a great hot breakfast. But the true standout of our experience was Kira, one of the supervisors. Her kindness and hospitality were absolutely unmatched. She went above and beyond to make my son and me feel welcomed and cared for, and her genuine warmth made our experience so much more special. Kira is truly an asset to Shutters! Samantha at the front desk was also incredibly kind and helpful. We were so impressed by the beautiful property and, most of all, the people who made us feel so welcome. There are absolutely things about this TownPlace Suites that I would like to see changed or that I…read moredidn't like, however I'm still giving 5 stars because of the location and the setup they have here and because I personally would go back without a second thought. First, some of the issues I have: The room layout puts one bed very close to the air conditioner and because they have the old-fashioned hotel style AC units, that leaves at least one person getting directly blasted with cold air all night. Using pool towel clips to put a towel over one side of the vent did help but reduced the efficacy of the AC and made the room warmer for everyone else. Breakfast is nice (and free) but the setup of it seems to be done as if this is a business hotel and not a beach front hotel. The cereal choices were all boring adult cereals, the bread for toast was VERY whole grain (as in it had pieces of grains in it), and the only milk they had was white milk (for example). Adding a small amount of more kid-friendly breakfast elements would go a long way. The outdoor pool is sheltered from the wind by the sand bank and gets really hot in the sun, a lightweight shade over the whole (or part of) the deck would probably be a welcomed addition by most people. As for what's great about this place: The location includes a beachfront pool + small snack shack with beach access which is directly across the road from the hotel itself. This gives the best of both worlds with beachfront access as well as having better parking and more room on the hotel property. On non-weekends the price is super affordable for a beachfront Marriott property. Not to mention the only Marriott property on the Outer Banks. It's very close to great food options, many walkable. Stuff for both adults and kids is easy to access. It's also not far to many interesting sightseeing or cultural things to see. All-in-all, I would love to see some minor changes but even with some flaws this is definitely a 5 star option.

The air conditioning was broke in the main lobby, where the breakfast buffet was the room temperature thermostat was on the fritz and the unit rattle loud the cleaning service was absolutely horrible. The refrigerator was leaking and we had to retrieve our own towels daily because the staff didn't replace what they took out of room, we have stayed here 4 yrs in a row and this was the worst I've seen it.

That said, the property is showing its age. The units still have outdated Dish TV service, and the curtains are faded and dated. Most of the furniture is cloth and overdue for replacement. The area rugs are also a concern--they seem a little smelly and retain sand, which makes them feel less than clean. Maintenance and management have noticeably declined. It's frustratingly hard to get in touch with someone when you need assistance. In short, you're paying for the location and ocean access, but the interiors and upkeep need serious attention. With some investment in updates and better guest service, it could return to being a top-tier beach property.

So the king bed was caved in and broken when we arrived in the nice bedroom... housekeeping just made it and moved on... this is how maintenance fixed it yesterday with no tools. We are traveling with an 84yo with mobility issues that is now in the bunk bed room. This is night two on the floor after promising several times that it was going to be handled right away. What does one do about this? We asked them to take the bed down so we could at least use the nightstands and outlets. They said sure but never showed up. Croatan surf club... any advice? It seems like we are being messed with for their entertainment at this point.
