Reliance Appliance is professional, responsive, quick, efficient, and competitively priced - I would not let anyone else work on my pop's O'Keefe and Merritt (circa 1947)! Do yourself a favor and take my advice -- don't waste your time and money with the others...I did and I'm still kicking myself. THE SITUATION My family owns a vintage 1947 O'Keefe and Merritt that hadn't really been touched in over 25 years - mostly because the home sat vacant for some time. We needed to get it working, but had a lot of trouble finding someone who was knowledgable about such an antique, and who would fix it for a reasonable price. When I took on this project, I didn't realize how difficult it could be to fix a vintage stove range. A lot of technicians out there don't know how to fix these, or try to charge a premium just because it's vintage. After having other technicians come out and try to rip us off, I finally discovered Reliance. Reliance was recommended to me twice by some highly rated technicians in San Francisco. We are in Marin which is probably why it took so long to find him. I called Reliance and talked to Matthew. It became apparent pretty quickly that this guy is a specialist in O'Keefe and Merrits (late 40's to mid 50's) and Wedgewoods - ideally suited for our situation. I texted him a few photos and he seemed to know a lot right away. I also really appreciated that he was sensitive to my family's experience with other technicians - it really did take me a few days to get them to agree to have Matthew over just to get a quote. THE WORK Matthew came to our home in Mill Valley, twice. During the first visit, he made everyone very comfortable by explaining all of the pieces that may need to be replaced and cleaned - hiding no potential costs. His transparency was greatly appreciated given the negative experience we'd had with another technician who clearly tried to rip us off, by charging more than three times what Matthew thought it would cost to repair. During the second visit, we barely knew Matthew was there. He stayed focused, and didn't leave until everything worked exactly as it should have: burners, center griddle, exterior thermostat, dials, oven, broiler etc. He did everything he said he would. He was out in about 5 hours, which is amazing considering this unit had never been serviced. THE PRICE The first technician who wanted to fix it tried to rip the elders in my life off, by charging $3k! The other guy claimed the whole thing needed to be rebuilt. However, Matthew offered to check it out and try to keep it under $1k, by not replacing any parts that could be salvaged. We saved $2,300 going with Reliance. And, he gave us a senior discount which was much appreciated. BOTTOM LINE Whether you want to restore or simply fix the broken components on your O'Keefe & Merritt stove range, I highly recommend Reliance. Matthew was very friendly, professional, and patient. Honestly, I feel bad that my family lost all the money they did in having others come out and try to take advantage, when I wish I would have called Matthew first. Reliance fully restored our family's Wedgewood stove around 2010. They fully disassembled, cleaned and updated the safety valves and calibrated the oven. We wrapped it carefully and placed it in storage knowing we'd install it in a home eventually. Finally, nearly 10 years later, it's installed - and everything fired right up! We had a few questions, and Matthew has been amazingly responsive and helpful, even though it's been years since they completed the restoration. These stoves and ovens were made before the notion of "planned obsolescence" and being able to bring them back to peak performance ensures they will continue to operate for another 80 years or more. Matthew answered my call right away, and was able to fit me in for a same-day appointment with the master technician Sau Cooc to take care of a Wedgewood stove that came with the house that we just moved into. (I called around 10am, and Sau was there by 3.30pm.) We thought it had a faulty pipe or valve and was leaking gas. Sau diagnosed the problem almost immediately, fixed it, cleaned out the piece and valves that were causing the issue, and also worked to clean up, double-check, and make sure that all of the parts of the stove -- even those we hadn't called about -- were in good and safe working order. Sau was prompt, super-friendly, kind, *extraordinarily* knowledgeable, and quick. And, while he was working, he also made sure to teach me how to take care of the stove and fix most issues myself. We have an old O'Keefe Merritt stove that we chose to keep during a kitchen remodel knowing that there was a risk if anything happened to it. Well, sure enough about 4 months after our kitchen remodel, the cleaners broke the stove handle. Called these guys. THANK YOU, MATT!! For those who have old stove love, find a Wedgewood on Craigslist and Reliance can beautifully refurbish it and make it safe to use and an heirloom to treasure for a long long time. Or if you are unhappy with how your stove looks and is working, Reliance can do a full refurbishing at their shop and return it to you pristine. Reliance has been all over the Bay Area providing excellent on site servicing for Wedgewood and O'Keefe & Merritt for years and years. I found them through a referral myself. Reliance is absolutely vital to keeping these old workhorses going and maintaining the charm of old california living. Matthew and Sau are true gentlemen, and absolute experts in what they do. If you are missing a part to your oven, call them. They have it. If you are thinking of getting rid of your old oven, don't. Call them first. The ovens heat to 550 (pizza!) effortlessly and if you use a wok, the flame on the large grill can be made very intense. Big pots of water come to a boil *quickly* on these stoves. The pilot light in the oven is great for proofing bread or making yogurt or just keeping a plate of food from going cold. Really wonderful. The stove flame can be reduced to the barest simmer with a clever inner gas ring. With the broiler, you have a salamander. The thing is incredible. They offer great tips on how to make sure your oven works smoothly over the long haul. Matthew will explain how to sweep under the stove to prevent dust bunnies from clogging up gas intakes. We have an old O'Keefe and Merritt stove that seemed to be leaking gas. Mathew came by and identified the problem ( the broiler pilot was out!). While he was here he did a little touch up on the enamel, and checked the thermostat in the oven-- no extra charge. He even helped with a light fixture that I couldn't reach on his way out. Super friendly and knowledgeable guy! We have used Reliance Appliance fir a few years, and I wouldn't trust anyone else with our stove. The griddle and side burner pieces on my O'Keefe and Merritt needed to be rechromed. I contacted Matthew at Reliance Appliance and he had those pieces on stock Extremely superb customer service. He returns calls and texts promptly and I even got same day service. While he was here, I mentioned our left side burners wouldn't light unless I used a lighter. He fixed that within minutes and gave advice on how to adjust the oven. That night I noticed a flaw in the chrome. About a week later their guy came out with parts in hand. He fixed my broiler and one non-igniting burner in less than an hour. Needed my old Wedgewood oven looked at, the oven wouldn't light. I was able to make an appt quickly and nice knowledgeable repairman arrived on time. It's turns out that the shut off valve button was just stuck, no repair needed. Took a couple of minutes and it cost $95, he also checked to make sure the temperature was correct and checked the burners. Thought cost was a little high for just having a button stuck, just had to press it a few times but other than that, they seem pretty good. read more

Oh, I am sooooo in love with the gorgeous custom built Scandinavian farm table that we just bought here... doing a little happy dance...I can't wait, I can't wait, I can't wait till we finally get it in the house!!! We did quite a bit of research looking for something just like this, and this was the only place in the bay area we could find that carried anything remotely like this... and compared to everything we saw (mainly on EBAY ) this place was VERY reasonable. They have a great selection of antique table tops and legs, and you can design your very own table. They are a family owned business, and the son of the owner was the one that helped us, and he was immensely helpful and really took the time to help us find exactly what we were looking for. We looked at the chairs there and considered buying them here, but we really wanted ten chairs that matched each other and the table. They had quite a selection of chairs, but none of the chairs that you could get large quantities of went quite right with the table. So now, on to finding some chairs! read more

Earlier today I put in a call to Matthew at Reliance Appliance asking him to get back to me about a problem I was having with my O'Keeffe And Merritt gas stove. The stove was putting out a lot of heat and I was told by a supply company that it was probably my thermostat, & that I would need to find someone to come and replace the thermostat. When I explained the problem to Matthew he told me you don't need a new thermostat just turn the pilots off and then he actually talked me through how to do that. Thereby saving me probably a couple hundred dollars for useless house call to someone else to do the work since he doesn't make house calls. Not only that but he also explained how I can clean up my stove without damaging it or having to bring it in as a didn't need a restoration job.
