If you're looking for a longer term rental and you don't care much for how nice the car might look, Rent-A-Wreck is a great solution. I had a great experience renting a car from here for a little while. Dave, the owner, was incredibly hospitable and communicative. Getting here from LAX can be a little bit of a pain, but it's relatively close (20-40 taxi ride depending on times). You really can't beat the price. I had an older Kia for the duration of the rental and the brakes were great and the car drove well, despite looking a little dilapidated as far as paint goes. No issues. You need to present your own insurance, but as long you have collision on your normal vehicle at home, you'll likely be good and covered. Dropping off the car after hours was a breeze too! read more

We rented a car through them in Medellin, Colombia and we got a confirmation email and everything once we went to pick up the car, their vendor told us that they didn't have any cars and that the only car they had available was 5 times as expensive as the one we had booked. We contacted rent-a-wreck multiple times and they have yet to give us a refund, and our emails and calls have not been responded. Worst rental company we've dealt with. read more

Rent a wreck is the best. I visited LA for a few days and needed a rental car that wasn't expensive. After searching around, I found them. I contacted Dave and he made sure that I would have a car when I landed. I only paid $200 for two days (including taxes, collision coverage and underage driver fee) great deal!! I also got to keep the car the next day for only $50 more because my flight didn't leave until midnight. I highly recommend renting a car here! The cars are all very nice and the rates are quite reasonable. Dave, the owner is incredibly friendly and helpful. I rented a car for a month from him 10 years ago when I first moved to LA. A couple of years ago my mom rented from him for 6 weeks and he remembered me. She rented again from him recently and at one point couldn't figure out how to unlock the steering wheel so Dave drove across town to unlock it for her. I rented a Hyundai Elantra for 10 days from Dave at Rent A Wreck. Traveling from Santa Monica to North Hollywood for a job, the Elantra was a total pleasure to drive getting amazing gas mileage. When BUDGET RENTAL failed me in August 2018 (long story short I reserved a rental and they called me 5 min before my rental time to let me know they had no cars and there's nothing they could do. I then had to call their national # to find 4 other cars at 3x the rate only to find they didn't have cars at ANY location because their national inventory didn't match the local LA inventory... in LA WTF right? What a mess of a company) Anyway the nice lady at one of the Budget rental car places felt so bad for me she suggested her friend at Rent-A- Wreck. Desperate I called and they gave me not only a great rate, a good car and easy rental. I was in and out and on my way to my cousin's shower in no time. I am thankful for this rental place because honestly I would be stranded otherwise. Ha, I started this review 4 years ago and realized I never finished it. I just want to say that Dave saved my butt when I first moved to LA. He gave me some very useful car advice (as I was looking to buy one) and it got me out of a bad situation. In short: He insisted I buy a warranty with any used car I find. Taking his advice, I made that a priority in negotiations and thank god that I did because the first car I bought was a dud. I was able to get my money back thanks to the warranty Dave told me about. I didn't even know such things existed! He was sweet. He gave me ice cream and talked about renting to the "Mork Comedian" (aka Robin Williams) in the 80s. I highly suggest you rent from him if you need a long-term rental. Fun Anecdote: A few years later I was reading a feature script about Michael Jackson (very LA, I know) and in it, they mention a time when MJ's car broke down on Wilshire in 1992. A person who spotted him ended up directing him to Dave at Rent-A-Wreck for help. The story gets more involved from there, but this is a Yelp review, I'm not about to write a novel. Had a great experience with this company renting a car for my 22-year-ole daughter to use during Spring Break. Fred found them and it was a seamless experience from start to finish. Savannah rented a Kia and the owner, Dave greeted and treated him like his own from the first meeting - even gave them ice cream! I was like, what kind of place is this? He even pulled the car out onto the curb for her. And like my father who used to say, "It's not what you're riding in, it's who's riding in it!" I rented a car from the Parma Ohio WAR and was very pleased by with the experience. The car was a 2014 Hyundai Sonata with around 100k miles. It was very well maintained. Absolutely one of the best customer service experiences I have ever had. My car broke down unexpectedly so I decided to rent a car from Rent-A-Wreck while I waited for my new car to arrive. Dave gave me a really good rate for a clean, safe (not wrecked) Chevy Aveo. I was given a full tour of the vehicle before driving it AND I was offered a free water bottle and banana in the waiting room (the banana seemed kinda random but, hey, I was hungry, so it was a most welcome snack!). Here is where things could have gotten really bad: WITHIN MINUTES of my driving the rental off the lot, I was involved in a minor accident. Although I knew that I was not at fault in the incident, I was obviously flustered, upset and scared about the repercussions of injuring a car that doesn't belong to me. When I returned the car, Dave and his team calmly helped me call my insurance company, filled out all of the paperwork for me, assured me that they would take care of everything, and even offered me another banana. After allowing me to cool off for a few minutes, Dave rented me another car! I could hardly believe it - I'm not sure I would have taken the same risk on a problem client. My second rental car drove safely for 4 days. When I was cutting it close to return the car before the end of the work day, Dave waited an extra 15 minutes for me to arrive. When he found out that I would be taking the bus home from Rent-A-Wreck, Dave insisted that he give me a ride home. And he did. Amazing. I throughly recommend this service to anyone; I will be using Rent-A-Wreck again should I ever need it. read more

Best place to rent a car ever. Okay, you might have a hard time renting a lambo or Ferrari if that's what you're after, but if you're on a budget, this is the place to go. I was recently in a car accident and had to rent a car for about a month. My insurance doesn't cover rentals, and I'm under 25, soooo, I was prepared to pay a lot. Also, I know almost nothing about cars, so it was important to me to find someone honest. Yelp saved the day and recommended these guys to me. Firstly, they will pick you up and drop you off for free. Secondly, their cheapest cars run $17/day. I called ALL the major rental companies and no one could offer me a better rate. I ended up going with a Hyundai Elantra which, while a little... rugged... served me perfectly well for the entire month. Thirdly, they give you free chilled bottled water. Every little bit counts! Fourthly, they are super nice and friendly. Awesome customer service, which is extra important when you're feeling frazzled from just having been in an accident. I didn't know how long I needed the car and Dave said it was fine and to just bring it back whenever. Unless you're trying to rent some super fancy car, I would highly recommend this place in lieu of any other rental companies in the area. In the end, it was about $400 to rent the car for an entire month, in addition to the additional fee due to me being under 25. Pretty awesome deal. Thanks so much Dave! I've rented from this place twice now, and feel compelled to give Dave (the guy in charge) the credit he deserves. He worked with me despite being an under-25 driver, and was always available to call with car questions. The cars, of course, are old enough to have married by now and made little cars of their own. But Rent-A-Wreck will check on them every two weeks to make sure they continue to run well. And they come with free GPS! One wreck did crap out on me... at the worst possible moment, of course. I was on my way to an important class and thought I was in for the worst. But Dave told me to leave the car in the nearest parking lot (Thanks, friendly dry cleaning place!) and take a cab to class. He paid for the cab, retrieved the defunct car(cass), and brought me a new one on my break, which was around 8:30 at night. Honestly, getting a cab at rush hour was a thousand times more stressful than getting a new car from Rent-A-Wreck. A year later, Dave still had the same guys working for him, and he gave me another great rental experience. He stayed late when I got caught in traffic, so that I could return the car on the day I wanted to. He is a man among men, who may or may not have cut me a deal on that pesky underage driver fee. A truly disappointing experience. I need a car while I sell mine and buy another, so we're talking somewhat long term. When I spoke with the owner Dave, he started to ask me invasive questions, like what kind of car I had, why I needed to rent and then gave me a run around about purchasing insurance. As a policy, I always do that when I rent, even though I have my own. A few months ago, my car was in the shop for three weeks after someone hit me, and even though the rental was covered but insurance was not, I still got it. Dave tried to dissuade me from getting insurance-he said he didn't offer collision and that I could get that from my credit card company. I called them and they do it secondarily to my insurance. Why is he acting like it's so crazy for me to purchase insurance? He told me to call back today and came up with a cockamamie story that he had all of these reservations for cars that he made no mention of yesterday, told me that my schedule didn't work with his ( I told him yesterday that I would need to come late) today, I was planning on arriving in the afternoon and then told me I could rent from Thrifty for $3 a day. If you want a new car that looks like a new car and smells like a new car and...IS a new car, I guess, Rent A Wreck isn't your best bet. If, however, you want basic transportation at a fair price and friendly, first-rate customer service, this is a great place to go. I rented an oldish Toyota Camry with about 70,000 miles for a really reasonable weekly rate, and had to turn down an offer to pick me up or take me somewhere every time I spoke to the very helpful and accommodating staff, principally Mr. Dave. If you're trying to impress someone, I'm not sure any rental car will "do the trick," but Rent A Wreck/Centinela will meet your needs if you want to get from "point A to point B' economically. read more

The guys who run the place are the nicest, arranged for a pickup at the airport where I met him just outside the terminal exit, paid a fantastic rate 180/week for my reliable Kia Spectra that had better AC than my friend who drove a 2007 Lexus. I guess I thought rental cars companies would be open all day Sundays. I guessed wrong, finding most were closed or closed early. A quick search on Yelp shows the Rent-A-Wreck on Pico still open...so I call and Dave answers. He's willing to stay open late until I can get there. He had a just the right wheels waiting. Small, a little scratched, but what they hey. About half of what I thought I'd have to pay at a fancier lot. And even better....I needed to drop the car off on Monday and high-tail it to the Airport for an afternoon flight with family to head back to the Northwest. Dave said, "We'll drop you off." What...no taxi? Yep, an employee was kind enough to spend the 20 minutes or so to drop us off at the Alaska Airlines drop-off. He deserved the relatively nice tip I provided...even though it was less than what it would have cost for a taxi. We both won out! Now, I don't know if that is common practice, but someone here mentioned that Dave "wrote the book on customer service"...and that he did. Dave and crew were great. I've I'm ever in need of a 'reliable' car in Santa Monica again...I'll see Dave. It's not the classiest looking place, but the help is better than you'll probably find anywhere. He even gave me a GPS to use at no charge. And...he offered me water (like someone said in a previous review) and I got to see Alex the wonder cat. 19 years old. I left my name on the answering machine and they called me back within a few minutes! Dave and Rick at rent a wreck are awesome. Like everyone else going on a trip, I needed to stay within a budget. All of the rental car companies I spoke with who offered great deals wanted an outrageous deposit. That would cut into my vacation money. When I called Dave at rent a wreck. He got my number he said he would get back with me letting me know what he had available. Within 10 minetes he called me back. He gave me a great rate on a car. Far better than any one else. My biggest fear for renting a car from one of the so called great deal rental car companies. Was that you needed to have a minimum credit score of 600. Well traveling and being 3000 miles from home, I didnt want to take a chance and be without a car. Not having a credit card and being in the middle of a chapter 13 made this a bit of a challenge for me. Armed only with a PayPal business debit Mastercard. And having to carry full coverage insurance with the bankruptcy. It was no problem. The charged me up front. No deposit. Actually the price the price I paid came out to be a couple dollars less than what they originally quoted me. They picked me up at LAX and took me back to the airport with plenty of time to spare to catch my flight back home. They have excellent curbside to curbside service. Since all my luggage was already in the car. They asked me if the car they picked me up in was ok to use. If you are looking for a brand new, mint condition car. Rent a wreck may not be for you. There cars are clean, well maintained car, run excellent. So if you don't mind a car that may have a few scratchs, dings and dents. This is deffinately your place. A quick note. The mileage is not unlimited. But if you can stay with in the 150 miles per day, this is your place. The staff is very friendly, they offer you water, ice cream, whats ever in there fridge. They provide excellent customer service. Great value for the money. Your'e in and out quickly. Dave has been in the business for 50 years. They know how to treat you right. Thank you Dave and Rick. First off: Dave from Rent-A-Wreck is a customer service God. You will not find anyone nicer or more dedicated to giving customers the best possible experience anywhere in LA. My wife and I returned a van to Rent-A-Wreck late in the afternoon and were then quite late to pick up a friend from the airport. Dave cancelled personal appointments and made it his responsibility to help us out. He drove us there and even waited for us at the airport almost an hour! It just doesn't get any nicer than this. As for Rent-A-Wreck itself, I think it's a genius concept. You get a slightly old car or van that still drives great and you pay way less than you would if you had rented a new one at one of the main rental companies. I rented a pick up truck for a few hours to haul some stuff. I'd read so many bad reviews about U Haul, I decided to come here and have no complaints. I was in and out of there quickly when both obtaining and returning my truck (on a Wednesday morning and afternoon) and had a convenient place to park my car. All charges were up front and reasonable. Three Things: 1. If they're busy, you might not be able to get through on the phone right away, but be patient as I think it's worth it. 2. Remember this is rent a "Wreck." You're gonna get a pretty beat up auto, but it will run fine. 3. Don't look for a "Rent a Wreck" sign. They're now in a storage facility. read more

k. the best new thing about rent-a-wreck is that i've recently become an avid fan of 'my name is earl'. every so often, dave says, 'i need the honda/ford, etc. back for a movie shoot.' now i know why! and with good reason! perhaps i am sophomoric, but i end up laughing out loud several times per earl. seeing one of the wrecks on it is eminently satisfying, in a fan/stalker kind of way... why is earl shooting a crossbow in to the air and having the arrow come down and land in his own back so hilarious? i have NO idea. randy with sleep apnea? chokingly funny. i'm happy to forfeit my wrecks for earl. too bad the show was scotched in 2009! read more

My daughter's car was totaled in an accident, and she's under 25. Dave was willing to rent a car to her, he picked her up so she could do the paperwork, and he gave her a ride home after she brought the car back. He let me charge the rental from Minnesota, and he even gave me his cell number to call in case we needed to reach him after hours. Having Rent-A-Wreck there to help enabled my daughter to get to her appointments and to find another car. Dave and Rick are wonderful people. They are businesslike and professional, but also very honest and kind. Dave always makes things better when I have car problems. He watches out for me. He'll answer my questions over the phone and tell me what to do in an emergency. If I have a problem with a car they give me, they'll take it to fix and either give it back shortly or give me another car to drive meanwhile. The mechanics there are great and friendly, as are the other people who work there. Overall, they have really made life much easier for me over the years. They have made it possible for me to not miss many days of work due to car problems. And they carry me through rough spots. Rick has a great sense of humor, and everyone makes you feel relaxed.
