Don't come here in the winter expecting cozy ambience. They could have stoked the fire in the freezing dining room, the signature feature of this potentially stellar restaurant. But no. It was an ember from 6pm on. The pork loin was good, the cod was fine, the potatoes excellent. The broccoli was dry and undercooked. Overall the lack of any effort at presentation combined with the cancellation fee warnings made it something don't want to try again. read more

First time for brunch here, party of three. The menu here on Yelp made it seem as though brunch was buffet style. Apparently this has changed in the past three weeks according to our server. It is now a la carte. Cheddar biscuits for a starter were cold and butter was also cold and hard. We ordered 2 plates since each plate was two biscuits and we were a party of three. Only one plate was brought out. ( we decided to let that go).Coffee was lukewarm and filled with grinds. Entrees were decent but the dessert menu had 6 items , 3 of which were not available. AMBIENCE: Bear Mountain Inn is one of my favorite hiking destinations in the West Point area. More specifically discussing 1915 Bar & Restaurant which serves as the hotel's dining facility, the decor of the dining room was spectacular. Upon entering you truly feel like you are in a grand lodge just at the base of the mountain. The walls are decorated with a plethora of antlers, recreational memorabilia, and beautiful paintings. The highlights of the interior would have to be the grand fireplace in the center of the restaurant which I would love to see lit on a cold and snowy night. STAFF: We were looking for a quick bite to eat so we simply sat at the bar upon the restaurant's opening. The waiting staff and bartenders were all very polite and interactive with us upon waiting for our food showing lots of warmth and good host practices. Our food did take an extended period of time to eventually come out however we were excited when we saw the visual of the plates. FOOD: For my lunch I ordered the Crisped Chicken Quesadilla Roll and the Chicken Pot Pie. The Chicken Pot Pie was interesting as the outer layer of my dish had this savory buttered crust that had a pleasant crunch to it. However, the inside of the pie wasn't good, it was liquefied and unseasoned. The consistency wasn't present, but the entire dish was cooked to a good temperature overall. Moving on to the Quesadilla, this dish was much better. Golden bronze coating all along the outside and interior of the wrap with the chicken having a burst of flavor especially when accompanied with the Pepper Jack Tomato Salsa. Everything on the bar menu was very evenly priced, affordable and good quality especially for traveling hikers and campers. RECOMMENDATIONS: I would simply recommend the Pot Pie gravy mix to be modified. A splash of dry white wine or simply the addition of garlic or increased salt to the blend. I really loved the outer crusting on the pie. I was discussing with my close friend if the restaurant held an order of biscuits with that same consistency it would be a game changer. CONCLUDING REMARKS: Overall, I really enjoyed my time at the Bear Mountain Inn, 1915 Bar & Restaurant. It seems like a sweet spot for those in the tristate area looking for an easy getaway or simply an outdoors afternoon outing. The aesthetic of the restaurant was my biggest take away really playing to their strengths of the types of guests that come throughout the location. I am interested to see the facility during the winter season when supposedly the entire exterior is covered head to toe in Christmas lights just illuminating on the sleeping giant that is Bear Mountain. read more

My harvest vegetable omelette with vegetables and goat cheese had a few pieces of green pepper, a lot of onions and no goat cheese. Bread was stale. The fire was lit but the windows had to be opened because of the overwhelming fumes. The staff were awesome but great staff can't make up for a restaurant lacking food. Manager came to our table and only said oh you ordered dessert. No inquiry about our meal, no asking how everything went, no thanking us for eating there . Ridiculous! read more

A few weeks ago, we had a problem and left, but explained the problem to the chef and the manager who promised VIP treatment the next visit. Chef Walters more than made good. The meal and service were good. This cod fish and chicken dishes were great. We were treated to extra appetizers, a flat bread with vegetables and a beet salad with a creme fresh. They also offered a complimentary dessert, but by that point we were full. Nothing compares with the rustic and beautiful ambiance of the Inn. Today we drove there just for dinner, but usually it ends a day of hiking in Bear Mountain or Harriman park. read more

I don't get all of the bad reviews, I love this place. The food is spectacular every single time. This is the second year we've come for Valentine's Day and it's been great. The drinks and the dessert were on theme and so good, the entree was amazing. I don't really like beets or seafood so the apps were a miss for me but it's not the restaurants fault, that's just life. We booked a table for 5 for Brunch with Santa on Dec. 15 and were very excited to try the food out for the first time since we live about 20 minutes away and have never tried it! When we got there we didn't find any signs pointing us towards the brunch or any people who could direct us so I went to the front desk at the inn to ask and was told where to go (upstairs dining area). It felt a bit unorganized but the place is beautiful and I was willing to be patient. We had signed up for the 10am brunch and the line at the door was very long so next time we might sign up for the later session to see if there might be less of a wait. Fortunately the line did move well once the doors opened. We were seated but again, no instructions as to whether we should go to the the buffet or wait to be asked. Finally saw everyone else getting on line so we did too, but the line was long and disorganized and it probably would have helped to have someone guiding people to the different lines. I have to say the food was fabulous though, but we felt rushed to leave and our server was taking plates away before we were done eating, so we had to hang on to our food since getting seconds was almost impossible! Also felt like the people serving at the buffet were giving such small portions that next time we might have to grab 2 plates or miss out on any seconds! I had gotten a small piece of French toast that was delicious, but the server gave me no blueberries and I had to ask, but only got 5 little blueberries, which is OK, but when I went back up an hour later, the food was already put away. Since they were in such a rush, when we got the check, my husband paid and I never looked at his receipt. We got home and I got the emailed receipt and looked and saw that they had charged us $48 for our 2 year old grandson who was supposed to be free. They also automatically added 18% for gratuity, which is fine, but we are trying to get in touch with the restaurant to get a credit for the overcharge. Also, my grandson never got his photo with Santa because that line was so slow and long that my son and daughter in law gave up on waiting. They did get his free ride on the carousel and that was nice. The place is beautiful, the food is fabulous, service could be better, but I'm a huge believer in trying a second time so we are in the midst of trying to get a credit for the $48 we were overcharged so we can return for another brunch soon and hopefully have a better experience in this beautiful place. read more

I'm afraid I need to join the chorus of "meh"s over this restaurant. Our server gets 5 stars. The location and setting get 5 stars. We went a little over a week ago on a super cold night and requested sitting by the fire place, which I highly recommend. The menu is small and uninspired. Not sure whether this might've been impacted by the fact that a very large wedding was being hosted in a separate area that night or whether that's totally separate. But I do plan to return and give them another chance -- even if it's for drinks/coffee, or sitting on my own at the two smaller tables that actually face the fire. read more

Was there for Easter brunch and was very disappointed! It was quite expensive $65 per head plus you had to pay for mimosa and it was a very small selection. Breakfast consisted of dry scrambled eggs and raw bacon ( few other choices) and lunch was bare minimum. Not a good experience at all and way to expensive for what you get read more

Severely understaffed. We had an early reservation for Valentine's Day. The dining room was beautiful. The food was good (although the "medium-rare" tenderloin was VERY rare). The wait staff was working as hard as they could, and kept a cheery disposition, but they couldn't keep up. More staff in the kitchen and more staff in the dining room were needed. Expensive and not worth it. We ate in the bar, as the bar menu was more interesting and appetizing than the main restaurant menu was. Sadly, it didn't really deliver. I had to send the French onion soup back as it was literally brown water; it's like they forgot the beef stock entirely. They took it off my bill and did not provide any replacement, so I effectively had half a meal. The wedge salad was good but small. Others in my party provided mixed reviews as well, decent for the mozzarella ciabatta and steak frites but thumbs down for the chicken pot pie. Drinks were good and prepared well. Sadly, the server for the bar area was the only one, and she was also the bartender for the whole restaurant too. She was pleasant but service was incredibly slow as a result. read more

I went for their afternoon tea with a friend.. I requested no meat sandwiches and they changed their ham and cheese sandwich to just cheese which was fine but that's all it was...a slice of cheese on bread. No mustard, mayo or greens. Come on, let's get a little creative here. They are charging $30 per person...Give me excitement and taste! It's Afternoon Tea...go crazy, have fun but no, not here. The desserts were just okay. Again, nothing fun and enticing. I am an afternoon tea expert and this afternoon tea was below par. The scones tasted like HEAVY fruited bread, not flaky and fresh. We only received one tea bag each in our mini pots. Even though the brand of tea they use, "Tea Forte" is considered a good tea, The tea was served long before the tiered tray came out so we were half done with our tea before the food arrived, we could only get more hot water, not another tea bag. For the price of this tea time, I expect good quality food and at least another tea bag which to be honest, a proper afternoon tea should be serving loose leaf tea. Another problem for me was the parking. It cost $10.00 to park. how ridiculous is that? I was never told I had to pay for parking. I've been going here since the 70's when I was a little girl. They are RUNNING this place into the ground. Such a shame! They lost our reservation that was made SIX weeks prior. The food was mediocre and there wasn't much of it......especially with the price of the buffet. As a vegetarian there was hardly anything I could eat. The servers were clearing so quickly you barely had time to eat. They rushed us out. Super annoying! They won't be in business much longer. The parent company GUEST SERVICES couldn't care less.
