Best burger i've had in Delaware! I'm from North Jersey (NYC area) and the cuisine up there knocks anywhere in Delaware out of the park, however restaurant 55 is amazing all around. The appetizers were all very good, some crispy chips with a really good dipping sauce, the burgers are phenomenal. Perfectly cooked and unique. They have a lot of really good and local beer available. The vibes are also great, staff was very welcoming and you can tell they are happy with their jobs, which is satisfying as well. I would go here every week if I wasn't a health nut! read more

I wanted to like this place, but unfortunately it lives up to all the stereotypes of a strip mall restaurant. The décor is uninspired and the staff skews either the teenager making some extra money to spend at the mall or the grizzled bartender who looks a bit kicked around by life at this point. The food is heavy, meat centric, often fried, and used to sop up whatever is on tap. I have not much of an idea why this place is often crowded with locals, other than the fact there probably is precious few places to choose from in Dover. The things to get here are the burgers and cupcakes. However my favorite thing I ate was the meatballs in plum sauce. The meatballs were small with pleasant texture, and were in a dense sauce that tasted a bit tangy, a bit like Worcestershire, and a bit like spiced mulled plum. It was served with wholly unnecessary stale pita triangles on the plate, which just added carbs. The burger I ordered was the avocado burger with American cheese, sliced avocado, homemade pepper relish ($10.25). I swapped out the normal patty for the sage patty, made with a blend of homemade sage pork sausage and beef. The burger did not mesh the toppings well, the bread was uninteresting and the avocado underride (for a burger like this, you want the avocado very ripe, to the point of becoming a spread when smushed down). The pepper relish was far too sweet. Speaking of far too sweet, the peanut butter and jelly cupcake I had for dessert was just a sugar gut bomb, and not worth the calories. Anyone can make that with cake mix, powdered sugar and peanut butter. My last minor gripe was the menu has a Santa Fe burger, which to anyone who has been to Santa Fe means green chile. The Santa Fe burger here does not have chile, and doesn't seem to have any New Mexico flair at all (root beer barbeque can be native to many places, but New Mexico is NOT a barbeque destination compared to other parts of the US). I asked the bartender why it was called Santa Fe, and she shrugged and said the names were largely arbitrary and not really supposed to invoke the flavors of certain places. That loses major points in my book. TLDR; Overall, avoid this place. If you MUST eat in Dover, perhaps this is one of the least distasteful options, but I think one can do better. read more

In town on business and thought I'd try another place the Yelpers recommended. Again you did well Yelpers. I had a daily special which was the sage burger, a combination of beef and sage spiced pork, reminds you a bit or breakfast sausage or thanksgiving stuffing, either of which is fine with me. The burger had cheese, some apple slices and I forget what else but it was really good. Had a dogfish head 90 minute i.p.a. to go with and for dessert they had cupcakes, mine was chocolate peanut butter. Definitely a hole in the wall local place and glad I found it. read more

I'm growing more and more impressed with Dover. What seemed like a dead-land for foodies like myself is starting to really look up, as proven by Restaurant 55. Thanks to Yelp, I visited Restaurant 55 for lunch and was deeply satisfied! As recommended by others, I got a burger, and it hit really the spot. As simple as it sounds, I absolutely love places that offer to fry an egg and add it to your burger. One of my messiest experiences eating a burger, but quite delicious! They have a list of favorite burger selections, or you can opt to make your own. We were actually looking forward to our waitress pushing us into getting a cupcake, but she didn't even offer. We actually had to ask, and mildly felt like she was trying to kick us out. It was hard to find her at times when we needed something too. But anyway, we unconventionally opted for a carrot-cake cupcake. (It sounded like the best choice out of the three offered!) Good, but nothing great. It tasted like carrot-cake in cupcake form, simply put. I'll be back for another burger, and with an improvement on service, Restaurant 55 could definitely earn it's last star. read more

This place is known for burgers and beer and they don't disappoint. We first stopped by the Fordham and Old Dominion brewery for a tour an it was suggested we check out this local favorite so we made sure we stopped by before leaving Dover and it did not disappoint. Not sure what type of beer you are in the mood for? Don't worry, Mary or whichever bartender is working will definitely help you find one that matches your preference, they give out samples to help you choose and are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. And for burgers, from fresh, local angus to black bean and rice they have something for every palate and they let you substitute broccoli for fries...hello, heaven!!!! This place is definitely a must check out in Dover!!! Thanks for the heads up Jeff!!! Oh and did I mention they have homemade cupcakes for dessert? Fun flavors that would definitely be a sell for families with children! I would suggest having the kids share a meal so they can have room for dessert. And the prices...wow! I was pleasantly surprised when we received the bill - I am so used to city prices that it is easy to forget that great tasting, local food doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg - so worth the price and such a great way to end our day in Dover! read more

Came here based upon the yelp reviews and was pleasantly impressed. The craft beer selection was very large with their variety. All of the food that was ordered by the party came quickly and perfect to our orders. The only reason for the 4 stars is due to the rudeness or lack of helping us 'new to craft beers' bartenders, but overall everything was perfect. read more

This place gets 5 stars for many reasons. One reason, the food is out of this world. They have a large variety of burgers. These burgers are not burgers that you can just get at any burger restaurant. You name it, they can make it. The meat is fresh & the taste is superb. The atmosphere is COOL! The owner really put thought into the look of this restaurant. Really great looking place. Customer service is always excellent. The wait staff are always attentive & they always know the specials without looking. They will also give you recommendations. The beer selection is the best in the area (and dare I say in the state). I say this because most restaurants in Delaware have selections that are regional. I love the regional beer. However, one grows tired of them. They have selections from around the country. These selections change often enough to keep you coming back to see what they have next. The cupcakes are really good. I'd like to see additional desert selections besides cupcakes.....but, this is not a deal breaker as the cupcakes are really good! My absolute favorite burger joint in town. Dover doesn't have a lot of hidden gems that are local and amazing, but this is one of them.

Restaurant 55 is a local favorite so I wanted to love it. However, my burger was dripping with grease so much so that it couldn't stay in the bread. The fries were the highlight of the meal. The decor and interior are very dark and gothic plus the loud rockabilly music playing is very distracting. For the price of these burgers they should be amazing however they are amazingly greasy!!!! $10.95 for a burger that was ordered medium-well to come out not only well done but soggy and unable to hold its shape is very disappointing. If you come to Restaurant 55 be prepared to need lots of napkins! read more

My family and I having been coming here for a long time and has been a favorite. Unfortunately we've been noticing over the last year or two, the size of the burger going down but the prices going up. This evening we got take out which was seemingly tossed together to quickly just to crank out the orders. I ordered the special (The Smashed Cowboy Burger) and was sold by the Jack Daniel's whiskey bbq sauce on it; however I got it home and there was no bbq sauce on it. It was literally just a hyped up bacon burger with some fried Jalapeño on it. The worst part? It was $16!! Not worth the price at all. On top of this let down, my mother ordered the Lunch Counter Legend medium well and over half of it was raw. Totally raw. She was left eating the soggy bread with cheese and onions in it and no meat. The only thing this place has going for it for me at the moment is their sweet potato fries. Way over priced and would not recommend take out from here at all. read more

Rude hostess alert! Make sure to ask for drinks with your kids meals because they won't ask you! The price of the meal is with fries and a drink, yet they won't ask if you want your drink. When I called to ask why we didn't get our drinks I was rudely told I have to ask for it and it's not her problem. Apparently I need to be a mind reader to know I - the customer - needs to ask for the drinks and not assume they come with the meal as stated online. No discount on the meal for not getting my drink either. I just need to drive the 20 minutes to go get my drinks....will not be going back to deal with this backwards way of business only to be blown off. I don't care if 95% of your customers don't want their drink, as a restaurant, you should ask everytime, especially if it is stated it comes with the meal. Also, the food was awful. Good burgers and brews with a focus on giving the customer the best bang for the buck is why I rank this place as the best overall burger joint in the local area. We found restaurant 55 to be a solid three, if not quite a four. Maybe a three point five. My GF noticed that the hostess seemed really bored, and didn't give us a good first impression at all. I thought the atmoshpere was a little on the dim and grungy side. I had a flight of beers which were all tasty except for the blueberry/citrusy thing from Dewey beer company which was nasty. It was ironic for them to pick that beer to represent DBC, because I've been there many times and found that they have terrific beers. But the flight was overall very good, and was served correctly by our friendly waitress. The food: Both my gf's burger and my french dip proved to be solid if not outstanding. 55 is a good, local, unpretentious burger and brew joint. read more

I came here with my fiance, because he wanted to try to find a good chicken wing place. We figured that our best bet would be to go to a burger joint/bar. It had good reviews on Yelp, so we wanted to give it a try. It is off the highway on a 2-lane dirt road pretty much. There is a small set of buildings that houses this restaurant as well as less than a handful of other establishments. Parking is a little bit more cumbersome than at most places, because the parking right in front of the restaurant is rather limited. Once we arrived into the restaurant, we were met with the hostess. My fiance and I usually opt for the bar when we go to burger joints, because we get our food faster, and there are TVs for when there's a sports game on. And usually the bar selections are easily visible, and the bartender is within an earshot if you ever need anything. The bar is a typical bar with all of the fixings. You can order pretty much anything that you want. They have a chalkboard with the beer selections (which is excellent) as well as any daily specials. We ordered the chicken wing appetizer, and my fiance was happy with them. They have nice twists on their burgers, such as the 50/50 burger (ground chuck/bacon) and their sage burger (ground chuck mixed with a special pork sausage), among other specialty burgers. They burgers are around $11 give or take. I ordered the fish taco entree, and the mahi mahi was made well. Not too dry, and I didn't feel neither stuffed nor famished after eating it. Our bartender was great. There were also ample TVs to watch various sports channels on. ***** I've been here two more times since my initial visit, and I have yet to be disappointed. For Dover, it is my go-to place for happy hour/after work drinks or to just grab a beer and food. Absolutely, bar none, no questions asked, best place to get a burger. You want a plain burger? Amazing. They have crazy combinations and daily specials that are always on point. The home made chips and dip are INSANELY good, and the beer selection (and constant updating) is a godsend. I would say how good the rest of their stuff is, but their burgers are so freakishly perfect, I've never bothered to try anything else (but I've heard everything else is super good too)! I've eaten here several times now and I'm actually shocked I haven't left a review until now! Today's visit was precipitated by a need for some good burger and I happened to be in town and after a misadventure at another place I drove a little ways out of my way to hit up good ole 55. As from previous visits, my wife and I were warmly greeted by the hostess and seated quickly. Our waitress was quick to get our drinks and rattled off the specials like a pro. This is the same service I've always enjoyed here and it is very pleasant to have a restaurant that is consistent with the quality of service as well as their food. I highly recommend this place and do treat yourself to the fresh cut and fried chips with old bay...perfection in a chip form. read more

The storefront is unassuming, but the atmosphere inside was very welcoming. The meal couldn't be beat, and the staff was friendly. They are known for their burgers, and have daily specials to keep things fresh. Wow. That was... impressive. Normally a restaurant like this would get four stars from me. I've been to places with both better food, and a wider variety of beer in other places. However, Dover has *nothing* that compares to this place. Like I said, I've seen bigger beer lists. I've eaten better food. But not in Dover, that's for sure. And don't get me wrong the food was phenominal. Best burger I've eaten in a while. It's definitely a burger joint. If you're looking for a different type of food I won't bother, burger's take up half the menu. But they are GOOD burgers. Cooked to order, with a wide variety of toppings. Great bread. Worth it in every way. The appetizer was good too, creamy buffalo wings and handcut chips with a dip that tasted like a mix of ranch and vegetable dip. Quite good. Oh, and their dessert menu consists of specialty cupcakes. Really damn good specialty cupcakes. You wont find that anywhere else around here. So as far as the beer goes, it's a small selection, featuring many local brews, as well as some other craft brews from all over the US. Ironically a friend was just telling me about a brewhouse in SF called 21st Amendment, and they had their beers here, so I promptly ordered one and was immediately impressed. Great presentation, and they use the proper glassware (and state which glasses they use in the beer list - great for a beginner). They also offer samples of the beer, which is always a plus. The biggest problem I did have with Restaurant 55 was the acoustics. We had to repeat our order to the waitress a few times, and actually had trouble hearing each other during the meal, and we went during a slow time, so there weren't many people there. Just the way the building is set up, but I can see it being a big issue when it's crowded. Overall probably the best food and beer selection I've had in Delaware. Some of the best service I've had in Delaware. And at a fairly reasonable price. I think I've found my new favorite place to eat here, but anyone else should definitely check it out! read more
