Had dinner on Sat night. Lively bar scene, we were seated in about 30 minutes. The bread served was warm and delicious, appetizer was stuffed artichoke hearts, which had great flavor, the presentation was plain, they were on a plain white plate with no garnish. Another "Nothing up my sleeve" review of Trattoria 89 which gets three stars as it was nothing to write momma about. Our meal consisted of 3 cocktails, 3 apps and 1 entree the bill came to $82 bucks and change, a bit pricey in my opinion especially when you consider we left "without" a pooch pouch, in case it passed you by that was code for portions were smallish. In order of tastiest to not so much so, for apps we had the calamari with peppers, the bruschetta and mozzarella and tomato with basil and greens. Fresh mozzarella is by nature pretty much tasteless so its up to the dressing and accompanying ingredients to pick up the slack and well it just didnt make the cut. The calamari was a pleasant surprise and the bruschetta although small enough to pop a whole piece into your mouth the tomatoes were sweet and the balsamic dressing sweet with just the right amount of bite. As for entree we had the veal medallions with brandy and cream sauce. This was lack luster as I was looking for a medley of flavors, from the richness of cream, the kick of brandy and the overtones of fine aged cheeses, what we got was a monotone mixture that was not up to par with some of the better jarred sauces I have encountered. The veal was on the thick side but again like mozzarella suffers from inherent flavor and the supporting ensemble barely carried it off. The sun-dried tomatoes were a plus, not overcooked and flavorful but alone they couldnt pull the team across the finish line. All in all it is one if the better Italian restaurants I have been to in MA but if you are familiar with my prior posts being a knowledgeable foodie you know my expectations are high and rightly so. Lastly I was a bit put off by the expectations that we should have made a reservation. I did a lot of searching and reading reviews before selecting this location and unless I missed it there was nothing mentioned about booking ahead. Luckily a table was ready within minutes so just bear this in mind should you decide to venture on over. As far as atmosphere and decor, some reviewers complained about it being in a basement, lacking charm or character, we thought it was very quaint, comfortable and with all the wood, stone and low lights rather romantic. If you are a connoisseur of fine beer or prefer variety of the not so common nature then you will be disappointed. They do not have Guinness or anything resembling a hearty stout so be forewarned. Staff were friendly and attentive and with roughly a dozen or so tables in the dining area there were more than enough servers to ensure your needs were seen to in a timely manner. The one thing that put me off abou was that we could see the people working the reception desk poking their heads around to see if we were done and anxious to move us along which I have zero tolerance for. The speed in which they cleared away plates and brought the check you can tell they were eager to send us on our way which if we werent meeting friends would have really been an issue. We may give this another try but not before we hit the Brazilian buffet across the street. You can never go wrong with anything that has Brazilian and buffet in the name. read more

Great old wood and stone interior made me feel warm and comfortable on a rainy October eve. The host graciously moved us at our request to a romantic corner booth where my partner and I could sit next to each other because we're that couple. My chicken parm was beautifully presented and delicate, but a bit bland. My girlfriend got the veggie lasagna which she enjoyed. Plenty of food - from the free bread refills, to the soups/salads which come with entrees. Definitely stuffed and happy. We got out unscathed for $42, well worth it in my opinion. This is a hidden gem and thank god since it is fairly small. If people knew what they were missing, you cpuld never get in! I wish I knew about it sooner but have been there 4x in last 2 months since finding it and it's now one of my favorites! It's in the basement but it's warm and inviting. Service is always great and servers very friendly and helpful. Fabulosus value...portions large and of the quality of the North End or Fed Hill. A hidden gem! I have to admit the last time I was at this restaurant was over 12 years ago when it was named something else and I vowed never to set foot in the place again, after being scammed out of a LOT of money. However, it was a cold, raw night and I didn't feel like cooking and I didn't want to venture far from home, so I agreed to give Trattoria 89 a try. I have to say that I was completely blown away by this new experience. The food is fantastic and the prices are a great value. Reading other Yelp reviews, we called to make reservations, as suggested. However, when we got there for our 8 pm Saturday night reservations, there were many empty tables, so we weren't sure why we couldn't get anything earlier?? Allegra was our waitress and she was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. (We found out after talking with her that she is the owner's daughter.) We spent around $50 for two entrees, that come with salad, and two drinks (beer and wine.) We will definitely be back.... read more

My wife and I went to this restaurant for a nice anniversary dinner and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere was very nice in a stone wall basement although it get a bit loud as it started to fill in. (we went in a little earlier) We had fried calamari as an app which was good but its difficult to do a lot with that dish. I had the fruta di mare with white wine sauce which was a generous portion and was excellent while my wife had pasta Bolognese which was also good. I would definitely recommend this restaurant; for the price you get excellent quality food and in an area that does not have many nicer restaurants. read more

Very good food, quick friendly service. Parking (during this winter) was difficult because its all on street parking. First time trying this place out and we were pleased and will definitely try it out again. I had the chicken parm and there was enough for another meal for lunch the next day. My husband tried the masala and took a large portion home also. The only thing was pasta did not come with his dish, which seemed strange. I love this place, but be prepared to wait! The food is outstanding and the prices are moderate. That's a GREAT combination and is probably the reason this place is PACKED on weekend nights. We visited Trattoria on our first date last month. Quiet and romantic, the atmosphere was full of character. The food was amazing and the service was even better. Our server, Tricia, spoiled us! She was knowledgeable, kind and patient. I had a delicious shrimp scampi. My date had tortellini Alfredo; also delicious. Get there early so you can get a table. I was told by friends that this was a great restaurant for authentic Italian cuisine, so my family drove from Worcester to find out. The food was excellent however the reason I'm writing this review is for another reason. My wife had given birth to our son the week prior and we wanted to celebrate together with our 4 year old daughter. I called before hand to make reservations and let them know who would be coming and the ages of the participants haha. As anyone with young children knows, going out to eat at a nice restaurant is sometimes tough and if you could have it your way you'd have a section of the restaurant to yourself. Well that's exactly what the good folks at the restaurant did, when we arrived we realized it was a very classy/upper scale restaurant and worried our little family members might be a distraction. The host led us around the corner to a private table he had prepared for us in its own corner of the restaurant with a high chair, booster seat, crayons and coloring paper, I was very impressed with the accommodations! The food was excellent, the service great and we left being thankful that a restaurant understood what it's like to go out to dinner with little ones. A+ read more

Very disappointed that we did not get to try this restaurant. Called approx. two weeks in advance to reserve a table for 4 for a 50th birthday. I had spoke to the gentlemen that answered the phone and I had said that we were celebrating a special day and would like reservations for 6:00. I was told that we were all set. We arrived 10 minutes early and they had said that our name was not on the list. How disappointing after dressing up and driving 25 minutes with friends to celebrate a special evening. if we wanted a table it would be a 2 hour wait. Along with the fact that there wasn't even an apology and they didn't seem to care that they lost our name. We were left to scramble and find another restaurant. This is not an easy thing to do on a Saturday at 6:00/6:30. I guess I should have called to confirm, but figured that I made reservations plenty early and that the restaurant had such a good reputation I wouldn't need to call.
