What a great place ! It's right near my work and perfect for a quick lunch. It's a cozy place and very welcoming. I can see a nice big family dinner there. I want to love the Rome but it seems to be dropping in quality. Sometimes its really good and other times not so much. I grew up in Franklin and the Rome was a staple. The portions/quality are getting smaller and the prices are going up. I do understand that wholesale food prices are probably giving restaurants a hard time so it's hard to judge. It must be hard these days to run a restaurant. We wont give up on the Rome, its still the best Italian food in Franklin. However, I feel like a lot of restaurants are having the same problem, costs are through the roof. read more

I have to start by saying the homemade spaghetti is just as good as I can remember from growing up. If you venture out to the wilds of Franklin, MA, the small up-charge for the pasta made in house is a no-brainer! The aglio sauce was fresh and full of garlic, but it lacked enough salt for my taste. Our waitress was really nice, but the night we went it was super busy so it was hard for the service to keep up. They were also out of ingredients for one of the special martinis that my friend wanted to order. All in all, not a bad experience, and I would try going on a slower week night or at an off peak time to see if that makes for an improved overall experience. read more

For a minute there I thought I was at the old Sorrento Restaurant in Milford!! Poor service, cold food, and waitresses and bartenders catering only to the regular locals. Alas, I was at the Rome. Got there at 8pm so plenty of time to order and eat before they close at 9pm (by the way, why do all the restaurants around here close at 9pm??!! Strange!). Drinks first and no issues there, except for a tiny drinking glass (6 ounces?) I got with my selection. Where was a mug or at least a tall glass?! Ordered up a pasta dish with meatballs (brought to us cold) and their famous Gino Special pizza (brought to us colder). Never asked if we wanted cheese, hot pepper, bread, etc. Pizza toppings hard as a rock. In fact, the Abruzzi sausage was so brittle it shattered as soon as you bit in to it. Server was nice enough but every interaction with her was a rush job. She'd have given Usain Bolt a run for his money. I get it. An hour before closing and everyone wants to go home. But sheesh! She had no problem taking her time with a dog that a customer had brought in. Patting it and having it lick her face. Come to think about it, no hand washing after her time with the dog. Anyway, time to pay and we were approached by 2 different other servers asking if they could take our payment. More of the rush, rush, rush, game. In fact these two servers already had their drinks ready at a bar table waiting for all us patrons to leave. Note to the Rome: remind your servers that non-local regulars are just as important as the local regulars. Note to the Rome Part 2: find a way to clone Karen! I had high expectations and maybe I caught them short staffed. Went on a Sunday evening at 4:30 and there was a line. No big deal, we, a party of three, were sat down soon. Very polite service, brought us water and bread. First issue the bread I think came from Stop and Shop. The worst bread I have had in a long time. We ordered three cappuccinos and they filled the cup about 1/4 and tasted liked coffee milk. We ordered appetizers and the mozzarella sticks were decent as was the sauce. Also order garlic bread with cheese. The bread was similar to what we got before with melted cheese. I could not detect any garlic. Entrees were a pizza, eggplant parm and ziti with pesto. The pizza tasted like supermarket pizza, the ziti was not hot, some of it was cold. The eggplant was quite good. Portions are large and the server was excellent. We left a good tip cause the server hustled and she's not responsible for the shoddy food prep. read more

(They also are very careful with the gluten-free meals, the waitress explained their practices when it comes to a gluten-free meal, we were very impressed). I don't know where to start. This is my second time there. And maybe I'll start with this. When I told my Pastor I was heading out to meet my father here she said "we went there and you hated it." I couldn't remember why - but I was reminded today. First of all nobody should take a customer service job that doesn't believe in quality customer service. Secondly- if you are racist - take an acting class. I know we have a President who makes ignorance okay now - but if you are reading and you are black- skip this place and go see good people who will treat you like human beings down the street at Cafe Assisi. Donna was rude as shit. But she'll never be fired. I guess it's okay to drop something wrong on the table and run off. Worst host staff ever. And had the nerve to charge us after not eating or drinking anything other than glasses of hot tea. Worst $21 dollars we ever spent. Like I said - read between the lines. This is a family run business and they work hard to serve their customers the very best food they can. I have ordered take out the last couple of times and the person was very patient with any questions. I am dairy free so asked if there was anyting that culd be made that way and he immedtly said any of the items could be made that way. i was a little nervous because I had asked the same question a few years ago and was told of only 2 Italian entrees that could be made that way. But i gave it a try and had the Veal Piccata and it was delicious! I had no after effects so I knew it was really Dairy Free. On a later occasion i asked if the Steak Tips could be made Dairy Free and he asked the cook who said yes. They also were delicious. It is so nice to go to a family run place that is not a chain and get such good food and service. read more

I went to Rome restaurant in Franklin to dine and celebrate with my daughter and niece yesterday. Once seated, we found the first waitress to be very abrupt snappy and a bit rude ! Second waitress was just as bad! It became extremely apparent with the discomfort directed toward us ! Especially when we asked normal questions about the food and certain very simple details requested regarding how we wanted it served, etc.We ordered tea, drinks and a salad was also brought out, but we became progressively uncomfortable in the environment, and decided not to eat there after we had ordered our food! Informed the waitress that we are not staying, going, someplace else to eat and to please just bring the bill. Said she would have to charge us for the drinks. The waitress literally snatched my debit card to pay for the drinks, and when she returned with the signature receipt , I signed and paid for the drinks with a big 0 for a tip! The first time in my adult life that I haven't tipped at a restaurant! We got the hell out of there! Forgot to mention that we were the only black Americans there at the time, which is nothing new for us when we go out to dine. We dine often together and never had a problem. I wonder if the two waitresses behavior could've had something to do with our skin color this time, hmmmmm. Either way, we certainly won't be returning and will advise any person of color to skip this place . read more

Our party of five visited Rome this evening for some Italian food. It was also my son's girlfriend's 26th birthday. That aside, we tried a couple appetizers before our main courses. The hot peppers and calamari. Both were very good with good sized potions. The bread provided was very fresh and went well with our self made olive oil dip with red pepper flakes, pepper and cheese. I ordered the baked haddock with a house salad, a cup of pasta fagioli soup and broccoli. Cold slaw was supposed to part of the meal but it never appeared. The soup was disappointing and was no match for my wife's homemade pasta fagioli. It had very little beans, pasta and body. The tomato broth was ok but very disappointing. My fish came out swimming in a crock of water and melted butter. It was the most soggy fish filet I have ever had. I wanted to send it back but also didn't want to make a scene. Everyone else seemed to like their Italian meals. I won't go back. read more

The Rome has gone downhill... to the point where I am done with it. I can't afford bad food and service in this economy. We went tonight and it's crazy busy so I get it. We're not going to have great service but this is my 3rd bad meal in a row and I can't keep quiet anymore. It's just over priced bad food. I ordered short ribs with risotto and baby spinach. Blech. Gross. I never send food back and did. I can't pay for bad food anymore and it was just awful. We went a few weeks ago too for my birthday with family. My daughters salad had a bug in it. Just gross. Finally got to go back 4 years from my first visit and once again the food and service did not disappoint. Went in for lunch shortly after they opened. Soup of the day was sausage and lentil, absolutely superb. We ordered a chicken parm sub, chicken and broccoli in a garlic white wine sauce and a large meat lover's pizza to go. Food was perfect, portions fantastic and our server was great. We just had the pizza for dinner and it was hands down my favorite meat lover's pizza ever. My family moved to Franklin four years ago, and for four years my husband and I have heard about how great the food is, especially the pizza. We finally got around to checking it out and were beyond disapointed to say the least. The pizza was extremely soggy, extremely thick, and extremely bland (ordered well done, mind you). The buffalo wings were wet, soggy, and not spicy at all. The scallop and shrimp florentine was bland, and the shrimp were so overcooked they were inedible. I did get a seafood chowder that was good. After spending $75 for two, all that was eaten was the seafood chowder and now have to go find something else to fill our stomachs. This visit to Rome is a one and done for us. Not sure if I agree with the fine folks of Franklin's palates if they think this is good food, but we won't be coming back. read more

My nephew had shrimp Alfredo nice size good tasting dish. I had spaghetti and meat balls can't go wrong for $12.50. Good quality food at an affordable price like they say! Very disappointing take-away order from a family-owned restaurant that's apparently been a town favorite for many, many years. The tomato sauce on all of our dishes was bland and watery, and the chicken cutlets in the chicken parm were tough and overcooked. Meatballs had a grainy texture and flat flavor, as well. The Rome's food is not reminiscent of its namesake. The portions are large but very poor in quality and flavor. I've been several times and never truly enjoyed a meal. Their sauces taste store-bought and even their "fresh" pasta tasted as though it came from out of a box. They could use a menu overhaul and updated decor. read more
