Lowell's Restaurant has been serving Mendon since 1913. Freeman Lowell began with milk delivery & eventually founded Lowell's Dairy, adding ice cream & growing the business. The restaurant gained popularity in the 1970s & changed hands in 1987. A 2004 fire led to a rebuild, & Lowell's reopened in 2005. I grabbed takeout there & had a great veggie sausage omelette with home fries & a grilled English muffin. I'd definitely return to try out lunch & dinner. read more

So some friends have told us about Lowell's and we wanted to try something different. Very glad we did. The place is homey feeling and I do not think any member of the staff could have been nicer. Stopped for dinner just before the holidays and pleased to find it only moderately busy. Still, we waited somewhat awkwardly to be greeted, as the hostess was behind the desk and nobody else was waiting. Once recognized, we were seated in a very comfy booth and given menus. Our waiter was a lovely young man who took good care of us. I chose from the specials offered - Seafood Fra Diavolo. My date chose the Chicken Marsala, after much debating. The menu is very nice with several appealing options. My meal was good with plenty of fresh shrimp and scallops. The sauce was good but scant and not as spicy as the Fra Diavolo to which I am accustomed. It was a generous portion and I took some of the pasta home to doctor-up the next day. The Marsala was devoured in its entirety and very well received. It appeared to have a generous amount of mushrooms, which would have pleased me, had I ordered it. The food has always been wonderful and exceptionally good size in the portions. I myself have always had problems with the wait staff never coming right away or if I come in and say I am waiting for other people they still once they seat you they still don't come back and ask you if you want coffee or a beverage or something while you're waiting so the wait staff really hasn't been impressive for me. I've been coming here since I was a kid. I am now a grown adult and the only reason I ever come here is if it's my fathers turn to choose the restaurant to go to. This is probably not a very helpful review as the only thing I really enjoy there is the liver & onions (and almost everyone else on the plant doesn't). This restaurant is not a cool place you come to to catch up with your girlfriends. It's the restaurant my 103 year old great grandmother (literally) loved coming to. Since Lowell's moved into the new location years and years ago, there have been no renovations. They offer subpar food and is a place for the older generation to gather and stir gossip up about the old folks home. They have a bar area but it's generally your 12pm "usuals". Not sure why there aren't more and better reviews for Lowells. My wife and I ate here for the first time in October 2020 along with about 25 other people from my Corvette Club. We were on a long cruise to Purgatory Chasm and planned to end at Lowell's. We all sat outside and ordered a large variety of foods. Everyone was very happy with their meals and also about the prices. Great value. I ordered the Monte Cristo sandwich, which is hard to find and favorite of mine, along with a cup of clam chowder. A Monte Cristo is ham, turkey and cheese sandwich dipped in egg and grilled like french toast! You haven't lived until you try a good one and Lowell's is one the best. Most times the ham and turkey are deli sliced meats. Lowell's is thick slices of roasted ham and turkey. People at my table got fish sandwiches, burgers, clam chowder, fried chicken and everyone was very happy and again also about the prices. Also, their drinks are heavy handed, generous pours. Our dining experience was not that great , I gave fair notice before writing this review but never heard from anyone at Lowell's. Apparently no one cares ! I asked the waitress how the fried clams are on this day bc they usually vary in size depending on the catch etc. She told me they were medium so I decided to take a chance. Ugh. Well I have to tell you they were NOT medium but small ( tiny ) and dried up with a bad taste to them. I'm a big fried clam person and I would have to say these were the worst I have ever had ! They should not be serving these clams and especially at the price which is over $20. But , I didn't say anything to anyone at the restaurant bc my friend was treating me and he would have felt just awful knowing the dinner was very poor. So this is why i emailed the Restaurant directly a day later before coming on here to post this review. If a restaurant can't even reply to a customer via their website no wonder they can't prepare a decent eatable meal. We used to be regulars at Lowell's -both when it was in the old location before they had their grease fire, as well as the new. The last couple of times we had felt the service was bad. When you sat at the bar... many a time -you waited for 20 minutes and no server acknowledges you. In the mean time, others who came in after us had their order taken. Before leaving we let a waitress know about our disappointment and how this place went downhill & that WE would not be returning. The food IS just average to begin with. Didn't even get a chance to try the food the service was startlingly terrible off the bat. The decor was outdated and confused. Sign said to wait for a seat then was greeted by a rude middle aged reddish brown-haired waitress who told my friend and I to look to see if there was an open table ourselves. There wasn't and they were all uncleared. She sent someone to clear us a table and told us it was ready and to go sit. We sat down at a weird little table next to what seemed to be an old bar. The same lady who "sat us" was on the other side of the bar and to give us our menus and silverware she threw it on our table from the other side of the bar. They put queso on their eggs which is a topic I really don't know how to feel on. The "pieces" of French toast are cut in half so don't order it unless you wanna get absolutely fleeced. On the bright side, the croissant sandwich and blueberry muffin were phenomenal. Decent cup of Joe, and the waitress was very talented (kept our water and coffee full and carried all the dirty dishes away at once with precision- I was very impressed). Stopped in for lunch and there were a lot of cars in the parking lot so I figured it couldn't be half bad. Food seemed pricey for lunch but I ordered open chicken sandwich and hubby got shepherds pie. They were both 9.99. Took 30 mins to come. Got our rolls with lunch, would have bee nice to have them sooner. Chicken sandwich was a few slices of processed frozen chicken breast on a slice of hardly toasted white bread. Mashed potatoes were instant, and it was canned gravy! Shepherds pie the basically the same! Everything was soooo salty as well. Waitress never asked how our food was. We are now sitting for 20 mins waiting for check and or to clear the table. When she finally did bring the check, she never said thank you or even acknowledged us. She just put it on the table!!! We finally went to Lowells' after moving into the area 9 months ago. We LOVE it! Each time we drove by, we found that the ample parking lot was always full. So, we figured that is must be good. It was GREAT! We went a little after the dinner crowd and it was very relaxing and friendly. We were thrilled to find that the food was fresh, delicious and plentiful. The Seafood platter was perfect. The batter to fish ratio was spot on. Not too bready, but rather lite and flavorful. The Caprese salad was crisp and had the perfect blend of balsamic vinegar, olive oil and fresh basil. Also recommend the calamari appetizer which was made to just the right spicyness for us! Jennifer served us at the bar and was welcoming and very sweet. She made recommendations, was attentive and anticipated our every need. We look forward to seeing her again as her service was impeccable. We've decided that we will become regulars at Lowell's. Did I mention that the prices are reasonable? The family tried Lowell's one night on the way home - I ordered the Prime Rib and thought it was great. The rest of the family enjoyed it as well. Lately my boys have been asking to go every month or so - the restaurant has a frequent special of Family Style (all you can eat) Roasted Chicken, Pasta with red sauce, Salad, and Fries for about $12 - the kids really like that. With two teenage boys, this fits the bill nicely! Do not go to Lowell's expecting a five star experience food wise - the food is usually on the tamer side for the most part. Comfort food, non-spicy food, etc. Once the rolls arrived cold, but the error was quickly corrected. So I give it 4 stars, I enjoy my visits there and at least for me, the service is usually friendly and helpful. read more

Decent but not great home fries. The waitress was very attentive keeping our coffee cups filled. Place is average. Nothing impressive by any means. We sat close to the waitstaff and could have done without listening to what Ramen noodles does to your stomach, or about bitchy customers or about how poorly they were tipped that night. Food was ok. I enjoyed the food at this restaurant - came here for a Friday lunch. The restaurant is on Rt 140 just past the Bellingham border in Mendon. Saw they had the Greek specialty pastisio as one of their specials that day for $9.99 and I had to try it as it is hard to get Greek food in the area. It was pretty good. Mac and cheese was also very good. Service was very friendly but I am taking off 1 star just because it was very slow. Just seemed a little short staffed. Otherwise I wouldn't mind another visit. If breakfast is "a lot better" I'd hate to see dinner. Went here for Mothers Day at 9:30ish. Place was dead seeing as there were about 15 tables empty. We were a party of 11 just in for breakfast. I received my menus and was seated by the nice hostess. The waitress had come over promptly to ask what we wanted for drinks. When she came back, she put them all on the table and told us to give them to whomever was supposed to have what. Ok... I open the menu to see what I could order. Being that it's a family gathering and I didn't have much money, I tried to looks for the best bang for my buck. At this place, that's impossible. 2 eggs, toast, and home fries were over $5. Never heard of such a thing. Whatever... Waitress comes back to take our order. I hadn't noticed that the waitress had started from the back of our table and gone counterclockwise to wait on us, so I thought she was going right to left, so when she got to me, I told her she skipped the person on my right. She basically reprimanded me and told me that that would screw her up when she brings out the food. Ok... I gave her my order. The coffee tasted like it had been brewed at 6 and left on the warmer ever since. The food gets to our table and there was no actual order, so I guess the waitress just wanted to make me look like a jackass. Instead, the hostess and other waiter came with our plates and asked us who ordered what. I get my eggs, toast and hfs. The eggs were not scrambled, but chopped. I'd never seen eggs come out this way. The home fries had zero flavor and I merely just doused it in ketchup to add +2 points to edibility. The waitress came by and filled our coffee cups without asking if we wanted it. Not sure if this was for her benefit or ours, but I assume it was for hers, so she didn't have to keep coming back. If the place was busy, which it wasn't, and actually the place never completely filled, I could semi understand, but it wasn't. This place is terrible. There was a line out the door for this place even though there were empty tables which is beyond my comprehension. If you've never been here before, don't even bother. Unless you like chopped eggs. ...and yes, it DOES smell like a nursing or funeral home. I actually remember saying that as my girlfriend slapped me. read more

This was the worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant. I walked in with a buddy of mine to be greeted by the rudest waitress I've ever encountered. She told US to check the room for a seat in which we did and they were all dirty. We were then seated and we were already contemplating leaving after her rude demeanor and the terribly outdated decor. She then comes over to "greet" us by LITERALLY throwing our silverware on the table from behind the bar and then walking away. At this point we got up right and front of her and said we were all set. Absolutely awful establishment. Dark, dim lit and awfully decorated to that of a 90s VFW. Do not go here whatever you do. read more

My family has been coming for years. We love this place. Hands down they have the best salmon around. We always ask for it cooked plain (no toppings). I order salmon all the time and no one can beat it. I've had their burgers, chicken and other fish. All was great. I have one criticism, the batter for their fried food is way too bland. Fix that and you will be awesome! The decor isn't fancy, but the staff is wonderful and the price is inexpensive. It's a great family restaurant. read more

I went to Lowell's this morning for breakfast with my husband and in-laws. Their menu wasn't anything special. I decided to order one of the specials, stuffed french toast with strawberries. When I received my meal it literally was two small pieces of french toast with some syrupy strawberries and whipped cream. That would have been fine but I thought I had order stuffed french toast, but it didn't have cream cheese in it. it also was almost six dollars and didn't come with any sides. The only way it appeared to be "stuffed" was that it had a few strawberries in between the two pieces of bread. Pros: Good service, my husband and his father's food looked decent enough. Cons: Specials aren't too special. Stuffed french toast wasn't stuffed. Needs a menu with more options and more healthy options. read more

When I was a teenager, and Lowell's was at the old location, I loved coming here for breakfast with the 'rents (my favorite breakfast was a tuna sandwich on toasted bread with hash browns and a milkshake made of maple walnut ice cream - yeah, I know, really health right?). I was driving back to school after a visit when I got a call from home that Lowell's was on fire. I couldn't believe it .... and those months without Lowell's ice cream were difficult months. But then it reopened and life was good again.... Well, sort of good. The food and service at the new location isn't what I remember, and it's no longer the place we go for breakfast when I come home to visit (which says a lot) but I can't bring myself to give Lowell's anything less than 3 stars. They just have a place in my heart that forces me to forgive the 25% of the time when things aren't up to par because -- like all the other Lowell-lovers out there -- I remember the good times and know that there is really no replacement for Lowell's ice cream. read more
