First time here and had a great experience at the brewery. Parking was a bit tricky but by the time we settled in and got a flight, things were smooth sailing. The bartender was awesome and gave great advice on what beers to try. Kids stayed busy with cornhole and Goliath connect four. He was not only incredibly knowledgeable of the beers, but he also took the time to write down his favorite spots in the surrounding areas for us to try while we visited. The outside seating area is large and there are heaters at some tables and some firepits & an outdoor trailer/bar. The servers are attentive & gave me 2 samples after making suggestions which was helpful. They have a variety of beers of different ABV%'s, so I would pay attention to that. My friend ordered a flight which is always fun. They also have live music outside. As far as food, my friend ordered "fried pickles" with ranch dressing. I don't/am not supposed to eat fried food, but did taste a few & had to cover in ranch dressing once I discovered these were "bread and butter" pickles, aka, sweet not dill pickles. I definitely don't like sugar, so I only had a few. I saw the inside was crowded. I found it surprising for such a large outdoor setting and so many people indoors, there was 1 male and 1 female bathroom. We only had a few beverages & the app. that my friend ordered, so after splitting it, it was $40 each, so I wouldn't call it a dive bar by any stretch. It is pretty trendy, chill and relaxing. I don't care about trends, but it is probably good for college kids and families or people who like trendy places. My favorite parts were the heat, live music, vibe, and servers friendliness. Took forever to get food. When we did get it they forgot chicken and avocado my wife ordered. My burger was over cooked and cold. Wait staff never checked to see if we were ok. I had to go th kitchen for my wife's missing items. Go to McDonalds for better food and experience. Wish I could give them a negative star. read more

I've been sitting here for 50 minutes and the tables to my left and right (with a different server) sat after and ordered after me; they already have their food. I really hope the food is worth this unacceptably long wait on a non busy day... 1.5 hours after sitting down: I'm keeping this at 2 stars only because my partner's burger was cooked perfectly, but the bun was cold. I had the banh mi special - it was missing the cucumbers the menu claimed was on it and tasted more like St. Louis BBQ pork than Vietnamese. Also, both fries were cold and the app came out with the meals. Our server was so obviously new, I chalk up a piece of it to poor training on the management's behalf. But be aware of your tables and don't walk up to each one with an apology. You may feel busy, but that's not my concern. read more

Been here multiple times and really like the awesome beer choices. VERY knowledgeable waitstaff. Really good menu options with a nice mix of vegan options. We really liked the salted haddock balls and the wings for apps. Jambalaya is very good and had some nice heat to it! The burger is well executed, cooked to a proper medium rare as ordered. Minor complaint would be the TV situation in the bar area. 1 very small screen tucked in at the end of the bar. How the mighty have fallen. Hayseed has been a local favorite almost since opening, even for a non-drinker like me. Since the acquisition they seem to be struggling to hit their stride and Saturday evening on the patio might have been the last straw for my family. Service was friendly and cordial but the server missed TONS of details. Appetizer order never put in, one party's order included a black bean burger with a small mod and came out totally standard and all of the food was lukewarm to cold. I had a simple pulled pork sandwich that was a) lukewarm at best and b) as bland an example of pulled pork as I've had, even here in New England. We won't be back soon, if at all. read more

I have to give this 1 star because I didn't even get to eat here because the service was so bad. We asked for a simple table of 4 and we were fine to wait for a few minutes as the hostess had implied. We went to the bar to grab a beer (which I have to admit the beers were pretty good), and we returned back towards the front to wait near the hostess stand for our table. We waited and waited for at least 15-20 mins while the place emptied out and we were the last ones waiting. My sister had to go to the hostess just to ask if we were ever going to get seated and we got nailed with "oh we called you", but we were standing right there.... We finally got seated. Sat outside for 17 minutes without anyone even looking in our direction to serve us (and we were HUNGRY so you know we would've eaten a lot). Beers finished and sitting there still with no acknowledgment. Got up and left telling the hostess that no one came to see us and they responded with, "my bad". What a GREAT experience.... read more

Exceptional and extraordinary! I was expecting a standard brewpub but this place blew me away! The beers were all solid across the 14 I sampled - very good! The dinners my party enjoyed were simply beyond any expectation - every one fantastic in its own way! Trout with heirloom tomatoes, oyster mushrooms with sweet potato purée, and gnocchi with corn and tomatoes were all subtle and flavorful with perfect portions. We also sampled the apple and peach deserts and again, all in my party we're raving! Only complaint is the acoustics are a little noisy - they should put up a tapestry or some plants. Hayseed is officially open as of a few days ago. I'm usually cautious about visiting a new restaurant within the first week but I'm so glad we did! No real opening kinks... maybe the service was a little slow, but the food more than made up for it. The grilled cheese was probably the best I've ever had, and even the bread basket (biscuits and cornbread) was well thought out and tasty. Everything is made from scratch with quality ingredients and it shows. M got a beer sampler with some Smuttlabs and guest drafts and everything was delicious. Can't wait to come back! read more

The Hayseed is Smuttynose Brewery's restaurant located right next door. On our drive back from Maine, we decided to stop by since it's really not a far drive from the 95. The restaurant is clean and new, and feels like you're eating at a beachside resort in Cape Cod! The best part about Hayseed are the beers. They have all of Smuttynose's classic beers, some of their big beers (re: HEAVY EtOH content!), and a selection of their Smuttlabs beers. We each got flights. For $6, we got four 4 oz samples, so not too shabby at all! I got the Vunderbar! Pilsner, the seasonal Pumpkin Ale, and 2 Smuttlabs beers: The Schmutzig and something called Kung Fu something. My fiance got 4 different ones, so naturally between the two of us we sipped and tasted 8 of their beers each! Food-wise, we started with the Beer-Cheese spread. I was expecting a warm kind of Welsh Rarebit-style cheese sauce, but it ended up being a cold yet tasty cheese spread with crackers. For main dish: I got the Kimchi Pulled Pork sandwich, and my fiance got the spring chicken sandwich. My sandwich was delicious, juicy, and flavorful. The highlight of the sandwiches, though, were the shoestring fries and the AMAZING homemade ketchup! I have no idea what they put in that delicious concoction, but I couldn't stop eating it! Overall, this was the perfect lunch spot. Tasty beers, delicious food, and all for a good price! Fur anyone vacationing in New England, if you get the time, check this place out! read more

Adding locally sourced and sustainability to this place is just another plus. Being next door to an amazing brewery allows them to get amazing beer. I had a very nice lunch here with some family visiting from out of town. I think it's great that they support local farms - all of their produce is local and they use local seafood and grass-fed beef. As I am not a huge meat-eater, I really appreciated all of the non-meat options they had. They also had some gluten free options for a couple members of my family. They had a ton of specials - with meat and without. Apparently these change daily. I must say it would have been helpful if they had a printed specials menu, as the waitress went over the numerous specials and then immediately asked for our order. They all sounded good, but I couldn't remember them all. I had the mushroom bowl. It was really fresh and tasty. I was able to get iced tea with honey on the side. The honey was from their own beehives. Everyone at my table was extremely happy with their meal! I had a bite of the chocolate stout cake. OMG it was great. I like the idea of locally sourced, simple food. And I like several of Smuttynose beers. But what could have been a great combination, was not so great. Admittedly, my review is biased because of the poor service. Our server was scatterbrained, took forever to get us beer, forgot the water and told us it was the "kitchen's" fault our appetizers and then entrees were served after other tables who arrived after us. And she didn't apologize for any of these slip-ups. Ok, she's human. I tried to put the lack of decent service aside, anticipating great food. Nope. Didn't happen. The squash soup was ok. It wasn't bad, just unremarkable. My husband ordered the grilled cheese, which was a very large portion. It looked great but after his first bite he said "it's just grilled cheese, nothing special. The cheese isn't all that great." I had the chicken sandwich. The chicken was well cooked and the honey-mustard sauce was nice. The bun was soggy (not even sure how the accomplished that one), the pickles were way too salty and the "pome frites" were meh. The "ketchup" was just weird (think canned tomato paste with a several teaspoons of sugar mixed in). Not good. My point is this: it's ok, hell, it's even great to have a simple menu featuring fresh food. But if you go simple, the food needs to taste great and it needs to be well executed. Otherwise you leave people feeling like we did...why did we just spend $36 on food we could have made better ourselves for only $5. Truly, it's a shame it's associated with such great beer. read more

We recently ate at Hayseed Restaurant in Hampton, NH. There was a 30 minute wait when we arrived, but the hostess suggested that we go next door for a brewery tour, and she would call my cell phone as soon as a table opened up. This was perfect! We were even given a pass for a free pint at their sister company, the Portsmouth Brewery. We were finishing our beers in the tasting room as she was calling. It couldn't have worked out any better. There were plenty of beer options once we sat. We ordered several flights (not too expensive), and were surprised at how good the beers were. The draft wine was good too! We ordered fries for an appetizer. Pretty standard, but the aoli that came with it was great; sweet, and a little spicy. For entrees, we had the steak on special, and the vegetable pot pie. The steak was a bit expensive, but was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The pot pie was good, but some of the veggies weren't fully cooked, and there was an overwhelming flavor (fennel?). For desserts, we had the strawberry shortcake and the chocolate cake. Both were good, but the biscuits in the shortcake were tough, and the cake was just a bit too sweet. The service was phenomenal. The waitress was great, and the manager checked up on us several times to make sure everything was OK. A few minor flaws in the food, which is to be expected in a fairly new restaurant, but all in all a great experience. We will be back for sure. read more

Every person that we spoke with was extremely knowledgable of the entire menu and beer selection. I think Colleen and I are sympatico because I had the same intentions with Hayseed. Long story short, we had a not so great dining experience about a week after they opened. I sent them a very nice note on Facebook (see below) with constructive criticism. Got an immediate response and ended up speaking to their GM who was nice and insisted on sending us a gift card to come back next time, which we never received. I'm happy to see that other diners have had the same experience and that it wasn't just us. Hi, we dined at Hayseed tonight and I wanted to share some feedback with you. We were so excited for Hayseed to open after hearing of your concept, your great chef, etc. I was thrilled that you have so many vegetarian options and couldn't wait to get over. Sadly, though, our experience was less than optimal. I know that opening a restaurant can be tough and it takes a while to work out the kinks so please understand this is meant to be constructive. We want you to succeed and be a needed and welcome addition to Hampton! First, service was pretty slow despite it not being that busy. Our server didn't even explain the specials to us although, other tables did get the benefit of that. The biscuit/corn bread basket we ordered was horrible, to say the least. The biscuits were under cooked, tasteless and hard to the point that they could have been used as a weapon, almost as if the leavening agent was left out. The split pea soup was cold, not once, but twice, and extremely under seasoned and flavorless. These issues were very nicely brought to our servers attention but she didn't seem to care. I would have expected a manager to come over, but all we got was a quick apology. The food got better with our entrees (grilled cheese and the beef stew), but the french fires were just warm and my husband's beef stew had inconsistent temperatures. Some pieces of meat and the carrots were cold while other pieces were hot. A young man (maybe a manager?) was going around asking people how their meal was but ours was the only table he skipped, which felt intentional. It was clear the staff only wanted to hear the good and not about the areas that need improvement. Again, we very much want you to succeed and wanted to share this information with you so that you can address it with your staff. The food here is wonderful! My husband and I are both vegetarians and there are tons of creative options with protein. I had the gazpacho, which was light and refreshing. My husband had the potato spinach soup and he enjoyed it. We shared the lentil pate - yum! Lots of flavor in the pate and the pickled onions and mustard were great accompaniments. We split the filet o' 'fu sandwich - a deep-fried slab of marinated tofu with apple slaw on a housemade potato roll - and it was amazing! Great blend of flavors and our waitress brought it to us already cut in two, with individual plates of fries - I love that! There were a lot of vaguely impolite noises made while we ate, it was that tasty. We shared the banana pudding, which was very tasty and not too sweet. The atmosphere was great - clean and uncluttered but the re-purposed wood gave it a farmhouse feel. The beer was good (of course) and I had a glass of Riesling with our dessert which was perfectly cold and sweet. Really enjoyed this place and will be back! read more

It was such an easy process, they were very organized, and they took away all the stress of party planning for me! Got the Parmesan Brussel sprouts, some of the absolute best I've ever had. Onion rings come in a huge portion and are also amazing! The burger was well cooked, and very tasty. Fried chicken sandwich was also one of the best fried chickens I've ever gotten, however if you do not like spicy that much this is very spicy, so ask for the sauce on the side. 4.5 stars!! read more
