It was such an easy process, they were very organized, and they took away all the stress of party planning for me! This place was fantastic on our firs time in. It offers farm to table and is located inside a converted farmhouse on the Smuttynose Brewery property. The inside is enormous and seats around 90 people, though they do not take reservations. It was immaculate inside as well and the hostess, waitress and bartender all more than accommodating. The kimchi marinated pulled pork sandwich was a great take by getting rid of the the super sweet BBQ flavor and putting it with an Asian slaw. The fish stew was chock full of clams and monkfish and thick, They hand cut their own fried and onion rings and you should try them with the homemade Old Brown Dog ale mustard. An enormous haddock sandwich and snitzel were also lauded over at the table by their perspective eaters. The artisanal cheese plate was great as well, but for $14 bucks it was expensive for the amount you got and could not qualify as a meal, let alone an appetizer for more than one person. The prices were great overall, just be aware of what you're buying. The cheese plate and 10 dollar grilled cheese sandwich seemed very excessively priced. Got the Parmesan Brussel sprouts, some of the absolute best I've ever had. Onion rings come in a huge portion and are also amazing! The burger was well cooked, and very tasty. Fried chicken sandwich was also one of the best fried chickens I've ever gotten, however if you do not like spicy that much this is very spicy, so ask for the sauce on the side. 4.5 stars!! read more

This place has great vegetarian options and amazing beer. My spouse had the pulled pork and it was delicious, too. Excellent outdoor space for small or big groups and a really good appetizer selection for shared plates. They have a uni-stall men's and women's separate bathroom, they would benefit by having 2 non gendered bathrooms separately. They also do not allow dogs on the patio, which would make me knock off a star but the food and drink is just so good that I could not do that to the establishment. Recommended are the mushroom dip sandwich and tofu jambalaya. The onion rings are amazing to share and most things on the menu can be made vegan or gluten free. This is a solid establishment I would recommend and plan on coming back to. I'll just keep the dog at home when I do. read more

I've been to Hayseed a couple of times while making a pit-stop between MA and ME. Smuttynose has an interesting setup where the brewery is just across the lot from a fresh and modern restaurant, where their beers can be served to patrons who have worked up an appetite on their tour. I'm less picky then some of these Yelpers, because I know what its like to visit a brewery and there be NO FOOD in sight!!! *Gasp* So, Hayseed is a godsend to brewery visitors. They knock a burger out of the park, use fresh local ingredients, serve all of Smuttynose's beer with a friendly smile, and have nicely designed seating inside and on the patio (along with cornhole!) read more

Hopefully this is constructive for the managers at Hayseed since this is a new place I want to succeed! I was so excited Smuttynose was opening a restaurant and had really high hopes for this place. First, let's talk beer. Great selection of smuttynose and smuttlabs beers, but they don't have a beer menu, just a tap list. So if you want to know what types of beers everything is or their abv you need to use your phone or ask the bartender. That being said, beers are fairly priced and you can get a tasting flight with any four beers you like. The food is... Interesting. A little expensive. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options. Not much selection if you're a carnivore or looking for typical pub food. My boyfriend and I split the beer cheese spread which came with crackers and it was a little bland, although having pickled onions on the side helped spice it up. We then split a pulled pork sandwich, small in size, the potato bun was delicious but the pork was bland. My husband and I were looking for something to do during February vacation. He googled breweries in NH and stumbled upon Smuttynose and the Hayseed Restaurant. We went for lunch and planned to do a tour after. We started with a flight. Our waiter, Jordan, was amazing and made great suggestions. We had the beer cheese which was great! He and the hot chicken - he said he regrets not trying it when we were in Nashville because it was SO good here. I had the roasted root vegetable salad. It was probably one of the best salads I've had. On top of great food, and great service, and cheaply priced food, we will definitely be back! read more

I know that they've only been open for a little while, so I do want to give them the benefit of the doubt. But to be honest, I'm not in a rush back. If you find yourself doing a brew tour at Smuttynose next door and want to keep the beer flowing with some edamame or nuts, by all means, come to Hayseed. The beer list is great, but the bar is a little small. The menu was "fancy" but I do feel like it was trying a little too hard. My parents both had the roast beef sandwhich that was a daily special, and it was alright. My mom's plate had a lot of fatty inedible pieces left on it. I had the mussels, which were alright. And considering that this is New England, alright isn't quite enough. The printed menu we had tonight wasn't the same as the printed menu that my parents had when they visited last week. If that's intentional, great! But I expected a consistent pub food menu from a place that's on the same site as a brewery, or at least a burger on the menu! Stopped in last minute, we were in the area for work and needed a lunch spot quickly. The servers were very friendly and helpful, the food was great. I ordered the fish tacos and they were spot on! Well, this place gets 5 stars for both the quality and the breadth of their brews, I think I counted twenty taps, and they give serious props to the guest taps, that was something like 7 or 8 interesting brews. They also get 5 stars for their tasteful and restrained renovation of the farmhouse. Very well done indeed, but I guess the architect should get the credit for that. But I have not really been inspired by the food they serve. I stare at the menu and there is nothing I really want to order. I have to say that the one good thing I have tried was some fried whiting, a fish that I want to eat more of. But I love hanging at the bar here, so maybe I will find some better food choices and pump up my score!! read more

Had a great meal here after a tour of the brewery. Used our tasting coupon to get a discount on our first beer. Had smoked brisket and wings, all of which was super tasty! The only thing that I would take away a star from was the tightness of the dining area. I'm a booth person and hate small tables in the middle of the room. However, when the foods good, a place is busy and needs to serve the crowd. I would definitely recommend anyone doing the brewery tour and tasting to stop here afterwards. read more

We were really looking forward to trying this place but we were disappointed with our food. It's definitely a bar atmosphere and very loud upstairs where we were. Our waitress was subpar as we waited a good ten minutes after being seated before anyone came over and once we got our food was no where to be found. Beer was good and we walked over to the store where they had a tasting room which was cool. Would recommend for beer and tasting but would not recommend the restaurant. Obviously the beer here is delicious. If you like Smuttynose, you'll be happy. The food is also pretty good! We really enjoyed the onion rings and the sauce they came with. I had the pulled pork sandwich, which came with delicious coleslaw on it. It definitely needed barbecue sauce on it, which for some reason we had to ask for. But we were provided with a little collection of homemade sauces once we asked and they were really good. We ended the meal with the s'mores skillet, which was super good. We regularly make a lunch stop here as part of a day trip to the coast. We have loved the COVID friendly outdoor dining, live music and friendly service. We had an amazing time for their out door seating! Everyone was so nice and our waitress was amazing. Wish I could remember her name because she was so fun and I really enjoyed our time. Their drinks and beers and delicious... Buffalo cauliflower was the best I've ever had. My fiancé got the cheesy lobster sandwich which was basically a grilled cheese stuffed with delicious lobster and came with homemade chips (YUM). Came back on a Friday per recommendation by the bartender for live music on the patio. The food here is really good and is presented very well. The location makes a lot of sense as it is essentially in the same parking lot as Smuttynose Brewing Co. You can take a tour for free and do a 4-pour sampler there for $4, and subsequently get a beer at Hayseed for only $3. Hayseed had an awesome Irish Coffee Style cask version of Baltic Porter when I went, which I think is the best beer I've had from Smuttynose. I also loved the indoor and outdoor space of both buildings. While the food and presentation are excellent, the food is a tad pricey and portion sizes are very, very small for said prices. I loved my dish (King Oyster Mushrooms), but I swear to you that dish cannot be more than 250 calories. For real. The food was high quality, that much I can confirm. You can make the price judgment for yourself. I repeat, just expect something small! read more

So, my husband and I have been fans of Smutty and PBrew for a long time and this was our first time venturing to Smuttynose Brewery and Hayseed Restaurant! We were sure glad that we made the trek as the beer and food were both top notch! Hayseed restaurant is adjacent to the brewery in a Victorian farmhouse at the edge of the parking lot. From looking over the menu and website it looks as though they source a lot of their menu items from the plethora of local farms nearby; a wonderful thing to see and it made me happy. The brews on tap are a mix of Smutty and PBrew; I had the Rocky Road and my husband switched it up with an ale and then a Russian Imperial (a heavy hitter with a high ABV but every sip delicious!). For food we started with fried cheese curds, served with a side of marinara and topped with fresh cheese; light, fluffy, tasty and disappeared quick. For entrees, my husband had the fried chicken, which was tender, juicy, and full of flavor. I had the steak pie and it was totally worth it--a cast iron skillet filled with braised beef, root vegetables, topped with mashed potatoes and a cap of puff pastry. I don't even know where to begin; the beef was braised to perfection and each piece fell apart with full flavor in my mouth (not a single tough bite!), the mashed potatoes were creamy and smooth with a topping of chive for garnish/color, the root veg were fresh and tender and chopped up in generous pieces (not little chopped indiscernible bits), and the puff pastry was a lovely delectable treat with it's puffy buttery flaky perfection perched a top this masterpiece of yum. We were seated at the bar and towards the end of our meal we were talking with some of the workers going off shift and seated next to us and chatting with the bartender. One of the chefs came out from the kitchen with a dinner that the staffer had ordered; he was jovial and asked us what we had what we thought of the dishes. Seeing that we were happy diners he told us about an upcoming event in March that are likely to return to the brewery/restaurant for. At the close of this conversation he sent out some house made ice cream sandwiches from the kitchen, on the house. They were set up like chipwiches - two soft and chewy chocolate chip cookies with a nice thickness of vanilla ice cream in the middle, sitting in a little pool of cream sauce and chili chocolate shavings; a nice sweet treat to cap off our hearty meals and very much appreciated! So, if you're planning on visiting the Smuttynose Brewery or just looking for a wonderful restaurant, Hayseed Restaurant is a home run and worth it either way! Staff were attentive, food was delicious, brews were complimentary and delicious on their own, and a good experience was definitely had. [As an aside, we were both disappointed to hear that Smutty; the brand, the brewery, etc., are going to be going up for sale in March. I am very disappointed in my experience here. From the moment my friends and I walked in the door it was clear the hostess decided she did not like us. First, she yelled at us for walking into the restaurant. Second, she had the audacity to take her mask off in the midst of the pandemic only to tell us that we were not allowed to take our masks off while in the restaurant. Third, we wanted to sit outside because umm COVID-19 and since only 2 of the 7 tables were currently used we desired to sit out there. The hostess refused to let us sit outside claiming the patio was closed when clearly there were people sitting out in the patio. Fourth, when a group on the patio left their table we requested to move to that table and she proceeded to refuse to let us sit outside despite the table being free to use. Fifth, we noticed her ask another group about the music sound level and never asked us. Sixth, when we asked the waitress about the hot drink specials (clearly on the board downstairs), she mentioned there were none and only later realized she was wrong after we had placed our order. After asking to switch our drink orders to the hot drinks the waitress mentioned that she wasn't sure she could switch our orders not taking any accountability over the mistake she made. Seventh, the hot drinks we ordered were sadly not hot at all. Not even warm :( All in all, we were looking forward to a nice Halloween outing but instead encountered a terrible experience. Smuttynose restaurant/brewery never disappoints. We always love the pickleback (bourbon-marinated pickle chips). All of the dressings are homemade which makes them all very unique, they are also always on point! The tasty tenders and smoked chicken wings are also always a winner. For beer you can never go wrong with an old brown dog! I also really enjoy their key lime sour! I love sours that you can taste pie crust in... yum. Just tried it out for the first time- mixed feelings. The building itself is beautiful and the service was excellent! The menu is limited to burgers and build your own salads, which would be fine if the prices reflected the quality. Bacon burger had one slice of bacon on it and had no flavor. Ate hear twice after visiting brewery 2 times in 3 days while in the Portsmouth area. Second time we ate at the restaurant we had a dog with us so we needed to eat outside. They did not want to sit us because it was about to rain. Fortunately, Conner volunteered to wait on our outdoor table despite the rain.
