This restaurant was really good, although what might have been a contributing factor was the fact that I was very hungry at the time we went to this restaurant. Their special, when I went, was the Tonkotsu Ramen. I got that, and it was really good. The only improvement that I might suggest was that they put in a little more of the braised pork belly; I only got two rather small slices. The others in my party got the veggie ramen and the shoyu ramen. They both said that it was 'good'. Casual, affordable, and perfectly executed Japanese lunch plate, which means most things are fried, salted, and served with rice and tsukemono, or macaroni salad. I LOVE that they serve kabocha pumpkin in their vegetable tempura, and that you can add single pieces for an additional dollar. In fact, many menu items can be purchased as single 'pieces' or smaller portions even including things like miso butter fish, tempura shrimp, or gyoza. This way you can control your portion sizes, or conversely, try many things at once! For example, today I ordered the miso butterfish plate, a 'mini tempura' with one additional pumpkin piece, and two singular panko fried oysters. And let me tell you, I ate each and every last bite, and still contemplated taking a California roll (one of the best on island) home for dinner (this haole girl can GRIND!) This place is a converted house so you're sitting in their living room and their kitchen is open I feel all the hot air and heat from the kitchen in the dining area. They have air conditioning but it's just he's really cheap units that's really not cooling the restaurant at all it's very hot and stuffy and humid. I ordered the kimchi Ramen and I found the piece of steel wool in it. I got a refund for that which was okay. My wife ordered tempura. It was good but because of the warm humid temperature in the restaurant it wasn't enjoyable for my wife. Frankly I don't think we're going to come back to this place we've experienced better. This little hole in the wall that's popular with the locals. Got a bento that included fried fish, rice, teri beef, spring roll and two pieces of sushi. Presentation wise it was placed in a pretty box. Taste wise, it was delicious! Everything was made to order with the freshest ingredients. in terms of location, it's a small wooden structure with limited parking but a high volume of local customers. My absolute favorite Japanese restaurant in Kahului! This is a very small mom and pop type of restaurant. There are definitely times where the restaurant is full so there isn't anywhere to sit so I usually order take-out. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes for your food to prepare. My favorite entrees are Chicken Katsudon and their Fried Chicken plate. There were a few times that the fried chicken was on the saltier side, but they provide a lemon wedge to try and counter that. What I like most about their fried chicken is that it's crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. So, we were looking for a place to eat before leaving Maui, sadly we didn't come here sooner!!! This place was awesome, the food is delicious and decent priced. The other places we've ate at in Maui were pretty much expensive, especially for a party of 7. Grocery in Maui was pretty expensive too. You could get a variety of Japanese dishes and sushi rolls. They were all delicious. I would definitely go back here the next time I visit Maui!! A must try if you like Japanese food and sushi!! Also, the staff here were friendly. When you go in, you order at the register. It's self served water and utensils. The food is brought out to you in to go boxes, which is pretty convenient if you don't finish and want to take it to go. Once you're done eating there's a huge trash can where you dispose of your own trash. So, of course it's not a fine dining place. But for the quality of the food and price, it is definitely worth it. I have always drove by this place and never saw it open. Today I stopped at GoodYear for an oil change and had 2 hours to find something to do. My boyfriend and I decided to stop here because we saw the open sign and it smelled amazing! Omg Omg Omg I am so happy we stopped by. Upon entering it feels like you are walking into an old house but once you get inside you see the front desk and tables to your right. You order upon walking in and they have a very easy to read menu and a binder with pictures to make the choosing process smoother. We got he Tempura Upon Noodle Soup, the C combination plate which had 2 scoops rice, Katsu chicken, tsukemono, and shrimp tempura & the shrimp tempura roll. So so good the udon noodle was super warming, not to salty and a very large portion. The tempura & katsu was perfectly friend and bursting with blended flavors. Def check this place out when in Kahului. The place is clean and has kind of a cafeteria feel. After eating you take your tray to a rack and throw away your garbage. Was in Maui for a day for work and needed a quick meal, not fast food. So, I looked around for something that was simple and quick! I typically look for the closest Japanese spot, and Restaurant Matsu was just around the corner. It's a quaint little spot with ample parking and great food! The seating area is cozy with with large wooden tables that allow 3 or 4, or even can be modified to accommodate a small group. They're equipped with like 3 or 4 ACs in the window that cools you down as you have a meal. They offer a variety of sushi, and other Japanese/local favorites. Read the reviews on yelp about this place so had to try it. A lot of positives on their boneless fried chicken so that's what I got. I believe it's boneless thighs with something like a tempura batter. The batter is crispy but as a whole it does get a bit greasy and it aint the leanest cut of chicken either. I ended up scraping off the fat and discarding a lot of the batter as well as dark meat portions. I am sure most would love Matsu's chicken (such as my co-workers). I can be a bit "selective" some say picky so... Anyways the restaurant looks like it would be a sit down get served kind of place from the outside but its very casual, no server, but it is airconditioned. It was very clean and I would have no problem recommending "Restaurant Matsu" to others. I just didn't care for their fried chicken but would definitely go back to try something else and update my review. read more

(He's Hawaiian, so he loved the fish) I got combo plate A with the shrimp, chicken & mandoo. Also ordered a side of spring rolls. Shrimp was Ono, and mandoo was so good! Spring rolls were hot & crispy! Nom nom... So, two combo plates, side of spring rolls & A can of HAWAIIAN Sun juice was $23.00. For Maui, that's a sweet deal. Great little local eatery in Kahalui, with reasonable prices (a rarity on Maui, in my experience, although I don't come to Maui often enough to have mastered the art of finding the best non-tourist places). My kim chee ramen was a standard shoyu-based ramen, but embellished with home-made kim chi. The char siu, while brown in color (as opposed to traditional Chinese red), had the expected sweet spice taste, unlike some other Japanese ramen places. My husband had the beef tomato, which had a sweet Japanese teriyaki base--a little different from the Cantonese pepper steak way I make it, but he liked it. This is a delicious place near the airport to stop by! You order at the table and then sit down. There's limited seats inside, so if you see a table, grab it! Make sure to move your bags though if you're not using the whole table so other people can sit at the table too. The service is fast and same with the turnover... if all the tables are taken, a table will open up within 5 minutes. Tables are constantly opening up as it is a quick place to eat. The day I went they had sashimi special so even better! I ordered the combo B with the breaded akule and I was hooked. Since that day I've been back 3 more times within a 2 week period.
