Located behind the Strahov Monastery built in 1143, the dining room is a former 12th century wine cellar built by the Premonstratensian Monks. Super intimate and romantic, I found it to be absolutely beautiful. Especially knowing the history of those walls. Entering, you walk down a set of stairs then through a narrow corridor lined with red bricks on both sides. Once through, it opens up to the main dining room with dimly lit lights and candles. We're not experts on Czech foods but we know what good food tastes like and the Goulash was out of this world. Served in a bread bowl, the beef broth has deep flavors like it spent time stewing in herbs and vegetables. The meat was tender and flavorful. But the Roasted pork knuckle ( shoulder) Rustic style, mustard, fresh horseradish, garnish, bread, was the star of the show. A huge portion that could feed 3-4, the meat was fall of the bone tender and the crackling skin was eyes rolling back of head delicious! Excellent service. A fabulous place to end our two week Europe trip at! We ordered a bottle of Cabernet, goulash soup with beef and potatoes served in bread, slow pulled beef cheek in wine with root vegetables and mashed potatoes and the roasted pork knuckle. Everything was delicious, the goulash was by far my favorite thing I got this entire trip, and my husband went as far as saying it may be the best soup he has ever had. The beef cheek and pork knuckle were so tender and delicious in the paired sauces. Dining inside a monetary was a unique experience in itself. The walls of the restaurant in the dining area makes you feel like you're eating in an underground cave. The service was superb. I was initially placed to site on the closest to spot to the bar but I saw a table open furthest inside the narrow dining area. The seating was more intimate and highlighted the experience of sitting underground. The server immediately let me know. The monastery actually brews their own beer so you much try it. We had eaten here a few years ago but the name has changed. It is now Restaurant Na Pekle. The food and service ijust as good as the last time. The building is very unique because it is a cave hewn out of the stone a few hundred years ago. We had the beef goulash in a bread bowl, trout, schnitzel and two of us had the excellent pork knuckle. Delicious meal served by an excellent waiter! We had trout filets and pork schnitzel, both were perfectly prepared. We were going to a concert and were so happy to be seated quickly, to order, be served, eat, and be ready to leave in 45 minutes. The cave is so pleasant-a lovely atmosphere. What a great little find. We were directed here by on of the guides of the hop on hop off red bus tours we took - by the way, I do recommend taking that tour. The restaurant is inside the monastery compound and it is basically a crypt. You walk down the steps into a foyer, then turn left and get to the restaurant through a slightly winding tunnel which opens up into the main crypt. It is a bonafide dungeon, with suggestive lighting on the bricked walls, a bar to the left and maybe a dozen tables. I had the salmon tartar, and it was amazing, fresh and delicious. A waiter at another restaurant in Prague, who we had come to trust for his recommendations, said the beer at the monastery was some of the best in town. He was wrong. It was okay. We took the tram up the hill to Strohav Monastery, which required riding the tram that stopped first at Prague Castle. Yikes. It was very crowded on that train. Once we got off, we walked a little further up the hill to the monastery. There was music coming from a sanctuary--probably a service in progress, since it was Sunday morning. We didn't try to "tour" the monastery, having heard that your ticket only entitled you to a peek inside the door to the library. Instead, we climbed on to the restaurant to try the beer made by monks. The restaurant is charming. It's in a legit cave, and the tables are candlelit. Very old school Europe, and the sort of thing that is expected for a monastery in Prague. But the beer. Just not to our taste. We'd been loving the very mild dark beers of Prague. This dark beer was bitter. If you're a fan of hops, you'd probably not find in bitter at all. But I did, and I did not love it. My companion risked the blueberry beer. It was better than the dark beer, but that's not saying much. It tasted like a blueberry wine mixed with beer. Maybe the food is brilliant, and they seem to serve other brands of Czech beer. So it could be worth the trip for you. For us, underwhelming. read more

WOW! We stumbled on this accidentally thinking it was the close by Stahov Monastery Brewing Co. They did serve the beer. This, allegedly, was the wine cellar for Charles IV and is attached to the Prague Castle via caves. We sat in THE cave entrance. The whole place was entirely cool and we had an exceptional meal with wonderful service (english). By CZ standards, it's expensive. By US - Order seconds. Sorry, CZ friends, that's just an accurate assessment. We had the pork knee (something we could not get here in the US and is was very similar to crackling pig. Think pig roast, exceptional beer, wonderful & historical location and great service. We'd go here again the next time in PRG (whenever that might be)! read more

I give the ambiance of the restaurant 5 stars. It's in an old monastery wine cellar with intimate tables and great atmosphere. Our waitress was one of the better ones we've had in Prague, much more attentive than most. Now for the food. I give it 3 1/2 stars, we had the meat meal for two....not the real name, but you got beef, pork and chicken, plus potatoes and small salad. There's another meal that adds boar, but that would've been way to much food for two. Chicken and pork were nicely done, not outstanding. Beef was like eating shoe leather. There are candles on every corner and the lighting in the cellar is just right for you to feel you are all alone having dinner in the cellar. We had the pumpkin soup and green salad for starters. Both excellent. The raspberry vinaigrette on the salad was superb. We both had a Czech favorite, roasted duck with cabbage and dumplings. The duck was a little dry but the skin was crusted. Not only was this my best and favorite meal in Prague, it was my favorite in my whole trip through several countries and one of my favorite meals I can remember recently anywhere. Four prague, it is pricey. But, extremely reasonable for anywhere else. I had a Mushroom risotto and a duck entrée. Both were great, special and worth every Koruna. Came for an evening meal with friends on a Saturday night. It is not easy to find at all so I suggest you use google maps as it is through some low lit roads and paths but a great place. We booked and were shown to a long table in an alcove which was a great atmosphere. We had a variety of starters width varying amount of food - the cheeseboard was enormous while the prawns and octopus were quite small. Then we had ordered 8 boar and some entrecôte and then the waitress came back to say they only had 4 boar and we had to change - that included some pigs knuckles and dumplings, which again were enormous. The wine we had was a very good value Malbec - which I recommend. It was not cheap @£50 each for starter and main course - great experience and a few service slips plus the most expensive meal we had in 3 days means 4 stars read more

They serve beer made at the monastery- the day we went they were serving a great blueberry beer. Just order beers and the giant meat, cheese and bread board and sit back and take in the atmosphere. Besides wonderful ambience and food, I must share a story. We, as Americans, had a great dinner there and when the bill came it seemed a little high but we thought it was just our ignorance in figuring out the exchange. Much to our surprise, we received a call at our hotel saying the restaurant manager wanted to meet with us over a problem with the bill. Turns out he had presented us with the wrong bill and we overpaid by about $25 in American money. He was so distraught over his mistake he personally made a trip to our hotel to refund the money. When we reached the place, I couldn't believe this was a restaurant, but I was in the Czech Republic, so I let my sense of adventure take over. The name of the restaurant was Peklo, which we later learned means "Hell." The small door led to a descending staircase and red lights flickered in a kitschy attempt to play up the theme. We were led inside an underground grotto which had been transformed into a dark Czech eatery. next we knew, we were sampling wines and eating pork knee, pronounced with the K by our now friendly server. The k-nee comes on its own serving platter, with its own serving utensils instead of a regular fork and k-nife. A little pickle, mustard and horseradish are the garnishes of choice. Now, I never thought I'd be eating a pig's knee in the former Czechoslovakia, but this thing was roasted to a perfect tenderness the likes of which I may never have again.
