It was my first visit to this lovely, clean, and upstanding Mexican restaurant located right at the border of San Leandro and Oakland on E.14th St. the lunch was delicious and well presented. My combo of pork enchilada, pork tamale, and chicken flauta was absolutely amazing! Our waitress was kind and attentive upon our arrival as we sat down and brought us salsa and chips which was fire! My bf ordered the super steak wet burrito and we couldn't believe the size of it! To top it off he said there was no fat or gristle in the meat which made it more enjoyable. I ate all my food in appreciation of the wonderful hands of the chef who prepared it. I will definitely return to try more dishes and cannot wait to be overwhelmingly satisfied. Our first time here for lunch, it was recommended by my yoga practitioner. We were greeted with chips and salsa, yum! Hubby had the tamale and crispy steak taco with rice & tasty beans. I had the steak enchilada and tamale with rice and beans. Both entrees came out piping hot on large rectangular platters. I asked for the mole, that's why we stopped by and it was bueno. For what it is, this place is good! I got a wet veggie burrito and it was delicious - flavorful and packed with the ingredients. Been to this place twice now for lunch and it just gets better and better. I ordered the Chili Verde burrito the first time and it was delicious. Big chunks of pork that melts in your mouth in a tasty green sauce. It was pretty big but I managed to eat it all. A couple weeks later I went back, craving the chili verde. This time the burrito was huge! I can put it down but this time I only managed to eat half. Make sure to ask for the hottest hot sauce they have if you like spicy food. They have an orange sauce made from habeneros that is lit! The place is clean and well kept and the staff is super friendly. I struggle with finding Mexican food that is truly authentic in its taste. Being raised first generation Mexican American, I like to benchmark the food I have at restaurants with the way my mother and grandmother cooks, and often times, I end up disappointed because it is not casero. However, San Gaspar Restaurant(SGR), absolutely showed in its taste, presentation, and ambiance that its authenticity. Taste Rice and Beans: I begin my evaluation in the rice and beans, because if they are good, there is a high chance that your main item will be delicious. This was the case at SGR. The melted cheese on the beans was absolutely amazing and you were able to tell the rice was made the day off due to its softness. Mojarra: It was cooked perfectly as it was crispy on the outside and the meat on the inside was very soft and melted in your mouth. It tastes even better when you squeeze lime over it. It tasted very fresh and did not smell fishy. Salad: Red onion, Ice-burg lettuce, cabbage and tomato with a ranch style dressing. Very simple, but tasted very fresh. Lastly, HAND MADE FRESH TORTILLAS-- need I say more?! Presentation It was out together very nicely (see picture) and the serving was not overwhelming. Ambiance Itzel, our sever, was very polite and knew the menu in and out. She was very thoughtful by doing discovery into what we liked which helped me get to the mojarra after. She really made us feel welcomed. One important note, SGR is CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN which gave me even more comfort! It has a high roof, and tables are spaced out perfectly so you can have a nice conversation with your party. Overall, San Gaspar is CASERO! As a traveler frequently to Oakland and stuck in a hotel, the final meal each time after the rental car is dropped off is always a challenge. I generally detest Door Dash as I prefer to dine in for freshness and quality...but sometimes you have to Door Dash. This last trip I chose a meal from these guys to eat while I watched TV. I didn't see any social posts that showed just how large the Super Burrito is so I shared with Yelp community. We normally come eat at this place and everything is ok. Until today, we found a hair in our food and the waitress was being unprofessional about it. The chips were slightly over done but appeared made in-house not bagged. Salsa has a slight kick and very tasty. Ordered a chicken enchilada with verde sauce, flauta, rice and beans. Delicious. I gave this spot 3 stars because my expectations were so high based on the reviews. I ordered enchiladas with a steak filling. Well, when I got my ordered delivered it was enchiladas but with ground beef. That's a big difference. I love Mexican food and eat it once a week. So I have to give it a thumbs up for the rice and beans. Also the sauce for the enchiladas tasted like it came out of a can. I also ordered a crispy fried shrimp taco. I figured things had likely improved. Which is absolutely the case. The food is flavorful and plentiful. The staff is nice and courteous. And the restaurant and restrooms are immaculately clean. The prices are higher than other Mexican restaurants in the area, BUT the food is much better. If I had to critique anything, I would say I wish the table sauce was a little thicker. Yes I'm trying to counteract the negative Blurting. Wife and I needed a quick lunch. The food had a level of taste authenticity that showed it was used to catering to people of Mexican origin. Plate was large and filling hence the price shown in somebody's review. Decor is authentic in the sense that it has not been phonied up with ancient crafts and old fashioned symbolism; it's actually what this ethnic group living in the present day like to see and the furnishing is comfortable but not a tourist experience. This my parent's go-to sit down Mexican place so we have been there quite a bit over the years. The last visit was great as there is a new vibe there now. The daughter has taken over creating the "vibe" of the place with a new look and bright feel. There are also some new menu options and presentation seems to be a major focus. Prices are decent, but not cheap. Worth it, but do not expect taqueria prices. Will be interesting to see how things progress as she continues to place her mark on the location.
