This was my group's first meal in Puerto Rico! We really wanted to get some mofongo, and this place was close to our base as well. The food was very tasty, and our server was great (El Ninõ aka Supreme). There definitely is a bit of a wait time as other reviews have mentioned, but I think as long as you have some drinks and apps the wait isn't so bad, and the food was certainly worth it. I'd recommend going with the Shrimp Mofongo, which was really tasty and had a great texture. Side note: the hot sauce they make in house is super tasty and properly spicy. I hate to say this, because the service was really nice and did their best, but this was by far the most disappointing meal I had my entire trip to Puerto Rico. I ordered the steak in mushroom sauce with a side of Mac and cheese. What I got was an excruciatingly salty slab of meat covered in Campbell's cream of mushroom soup (or at least that's what it tasted like) and, I kid you not, a side of Kraft mac and cheese. Literally classic blue box. And I waited well over an hour for it. Again, the service was delightful, if slow, but that's the kitchen, not them. They were very friendly, though. This place is a scam !! We were here as tourists from New York and visiting this place and thought of supporting a local restaurant which clearly back fired on us and ended up ruining our day. There was a massive mistake made by the staff. The menu does not mention the prices of main dishes. Our main dish (lobster) cost us $130 alone. In the entire duration when the manager was taking the order he never mentioned the weight of the lobster (Menu is even missing the cost per pound which is $30 per pound) We were never told by the staff about the price of the dish, the bill was a shock to us. The location is very open air (like lots of PR restaurants) and is attached to a mechanic's, but don't let those facts stop you. On the inside it's very classy. You know what else was classy? The prices. We almost walked out when we sat down and saw the prices here, but decided to give it a go since our host spoke highly of it. I think the cheapest entree on the menu was around $18, which isn't terrible, but adding on a drink (we didn't, but got stuck for the aforementioned bottled water) or some extras would have spiked the bill up pretty quickly. We got the mofongo. Every destination has that "must-try" local cuisine with a funny name, and in PR mofongo is it. It consists of mashed plantains (side note: if you notice a bunch of mortar and pestles in the gift shop, that's what that's about) and garlic, and, well...that's basically it. The money shot is what an establishment puts on top, which varies from nothing to the off-the-hook meat and sauce Desperado's puts on its mofongo. The W had one with shrimp and I had skirt steak, and the portions were absolutely generous even at the ~$20 price. Actually, the price was about right for the portions, and just right for the quality, which was outstanding. The shrimp were cooked perfectly, the steak was tender, the sauce was rich, but not too rich. It was along the lines of a beef gravy and decadent in such a good way. I honestly can't imagine we would have found this dish as enjoyable anywhere else on the island. Maybe more authentic, I don't know, but not better. Our server was super friendly and conversational, and she definitely tried for the upsell with appetizers and dessert, but that mofongo dish was the exact right amount of food for one meal for us. I'd actually love to try some other items on the menu, but the prices just went up from what we ordered, and we ain't go that kind of scratch. Buckle up, guys, I'm going to start saying the same thing someone else said in a past review: "I would give it zero stars if I could." This place is a rip off. My family and I waited nearly 2 hours to be served our meals, and when it DID arrive, it wasn't even hot. The prices are ASTRONOMICALLY ridiculous for the incredibly subpar meals. For $45.99 I ordered a 12oz ribeye steak with a side of onion rings; I'm at least 100% sure that steak wasn't 12oz, and on top of that, it was poorly seasoned. The biggest slap to my face how raw onions and mushrooms "marinated" in JUST sherry vinegar was dumped on top of the steak. The onion rings were super oily. Moving on to the next meals I want to focus on: mofongo with carrucho, and the kid's meal Mac & cheese with chicken nuggets. The Mac & Cheese was literally just Craft's Mac & Cheese. Trust me, we've all eaten it enough to instantly recognize it on a plate. On to the nuggets...I've had better nuggets from Wendy's. And lastly, the mofongo? Bland, but it was the only "decent" thing to come out of that kitchen. The waiters really never paid attention, so the service left much to be desired. They were never really present UNTIL they overheard me start complaining to my family about how long they were taking. That's when (who I assume is the owner) starter to "step in", but in reality, he was mostly hovering around our table in a very uncomfortable way. We stayed on PR for 8 days, and ate amazing food all over the island. The Desperado is, by far, the most amazing restaurant on the island!!!!!! My two oldest kids got the lobster w/ garlic sauce, I had the PR sauce (can't remember what it's called but Bryan will explain it, no worries!). (Bryan showed us the lobsters that just came off the boat, totally cool, the freshest food I've had all trip) My wife had the steak (Fricking awesome!). All the portions are huge! As soon as we got off the plane and were headed to our Airbnb house we were hungry and gave desperado a try, the first night I had with out hyperbole the best fish I've ever had in my life, ( red snapper catch of the day) Just one day prior I had been in San Francisco and in hindsight was becoming almost numb to good food. The fish at desperado rivaled the fish I had in San Francisco, the next day when we went to the bioluminescent bay and did all the touristy stuff is when I realized how amazing that seafood and steak restaurant on the main highway in Rio Grande was by comparison to every other restaurant we went to. This is not "a review on Puerto Rico" but if you've never visited before, their restaurants just have different levels of expectations, for example there is rarely air-conditioning, A lot of them are like shoebox style construction they're called kiosks, sometimes the servers are on island time. Day two, three, and four I began to realize just how out of place in a very good way desperado was in Puerto Rico; it's a purposely built construction, the interior theme is like a Texas steakhouse, the music was Jonny Cash, The AC blows freezing cold air, pictures of the owner with famous boxers on the wall, The bar portion of the restaurant was nicer than the actual bars at the beach. The best Mofongo I've had so far. My first Mofongo was at Metropol and it was not something I would ever order again. Until I came here. The waitress recommended the dish, so I went with it. Boy, was I glad I did. In a Mofongo lover!! The workers here only spoke spanish but they did their best to communicate with us and we had a ball learning Spanish and teaching them English. We ended up at this place because it was the only place open on Christmas Eve (we're Jewish). It was surprisingly good - service was fast enough and friendly, and seated us near closing without hesitation. Everyone in my party really enjoyed the food, myself included. All the mofongos we ordered were delicious (chicken w, strip steak, shrimp), although they could have thrown in a couple more shrimp. The red sauce is fantastic. This place is a big SCAM. I suggest avoiding it, as you will find yourself SHOCKED when you receive the bill! The food is hit and miss. Some of the dishes are good, some are okay, some aren't too good. It was a mixed bag for our family of four. The food, however, isn't really the issue here. First off, the service is SLOW. And when I say slow, I mean S-L-O-W. It took over 90 minutes to get ANY food. About 30 minutes after ordering, we were told they were out of baked potatoes. How could that have taken so long to discover? But again, that wasn't the big issue. I've been at slow-serving restaurants before, and I frequently don't jump on Yelp to report it to the masses. The bill they present you with at the end does NOT resemble the prices on the menu. Search out other one star reviews on here (some as far back as three years), and you will see this same accusation over and over. I ordered the $20 Yellowtail. The waiter asked me, "Small, medium, or large?", which was an odd question, given that there was just one price listed. I inquired the price at that point, and was told small was $20, medium was $25, and large was $30. So I went with the $25 medium. I also asked them to grill instead of fry my fish, and the waiter said that would be no problem. My boyfriend ordered the Snapper. Same deal with small/medium/large at the same $20/$25/$30 price points, even though again, only the $20 price was on the menu. He also went with the $25 medium. When the bill came, we found that I was charged $33 (instead of $25), and my boyfriend was charged $30 instead of $25. Even more outrageous were the explanations for these upcharges. I was charged $7 for "grilling" (not joking), plus an extra dollar they couldn't explain. My boyfriend's upcharge was equally ridiculous. They said that they were out of medium fish, so they gave him a large (without asking him) and charged him accordingly! What?!! He argued it out with them for about 15 minutes before they agreed to take it all off. They backed down on his upcharge after a few minutes, but they kept insisting that my "grilling charge" was going to stay, even though the waiter openly admitted that he told me my fish was $25 and that it would be "no problem" to grill it instead of fry it! They spent 15 MINUTES arguing repeatedly that it's perfectly fine to charge $7 extra to grill a fish, without any indication that such a charge would exist, and without it being printed anywhere on the menu. Finally they broke down and took it off the bill when we wouldn't budge. Horrible experience. Again, read other bad reviews and you will see basically the same story being told, meaning that this is a frequent trick they pull, and not just a misunderstanding. It makes sense why only one other party was dining there at prime dinner hours. STAY AWAY! read more

We heard that this place had some pretty fantastic steak, so we decided to check it out. The staff is absolutely adorable. Even though the food and employees are basically 100% Puerto Rican, they are really trying to pull off a Country Western theme. Priceless. Our waitress was a sweet older lady who reminded me of my abuelita! She even told my boyfriend and I that we would make beautiful mixed children. Classic. As for the food--wow. My mother and I ended up ordering the house special (the pork chop). My father ordered the ribeye steak and my boyfriend ordered the lobster. We were all foaming at the mouth over how succulent all of the dishes were. Amazing flavor, and I made sure to sample everything! Glad that we did stop here for seafood! Side salad was included ( listed at $4.99) but was weak as it was shredded lettuce with a tomato slice. Lobster ($25/lb) was chewy and overseasoned as well. That wonderful first bite that says, Yes! I made the right choice :) I don't splurge often. Most of the restaurants I go to are known for their good but cheap food, but my best friend came here in January during a cruise and came back raving... (Plus I think she may still be harboring a crush on the cook) so I had to check it out. We didn't get any appetizers. The shrimp mofongo (hope I spelled it right) was out of this world good. It was both rich and magically delicate. Redolent of butter and garlic, with plump juicy shrimp.
