I was referred to Retinal Consultants by my optometrist. I made the appt and when I was filling out the forms it asked for consent to dilate my eyes. I have a medical condition which the chemicals used to dilate can trigger. I didn't want to keep the appt if this would be an issue so I called the office and spoke to a tech - Corbin - who asked a doctor - Dr. Equi who said that it wouldn't be an issue with what I was coming in for. I arrived for my appt and was told that the doctor that day refused to see me - Dr Medina. I find that completely incompetent. They all should be on the same page. Based on the level of incompetence I'm actually glad that I didn't get to see that doctor at this practice. They don't seem to know what they are doing. I also lost $60 in Lyft charges to and from my appt. The only positive was the receptionist was professional and apologetic. read more

I had an initial appointment in April '25 & a follow up June '25. Dr. Huang has very limited ability to speak English so trying to explain the details of my issue & her understanding of my history were challenging. Fast forward SIX months. I'm just now being told I have a balance? NOTE: I'm on Medicare w/Plan G coverage. First a cryptic email last week stating I have a balance and my bill is on the way?? I can go online and make a payment. NO. I've met my deductible. Why this now? I contacted ins. who validated they'd made payment to RC months ago. Today I get a bill in the mail stating I owed the FULL amount of service & it was due immediately. On the back side it states, "Due to OUR system error, we were unable to send you statements. We are giving you an additional 60 days to pay." Seriously? I called RC today. They said this bill was an error, I owe nothing, but it was sent as they "JUST" received payment from ins. Again - NO. Payments were processed and sent to RC in APRIL & JUNE accordingly. I am incensed by the apparent & complete lack of organization, poor communications & the blatant inaccuracy of the bill. The doctors are great so I am giving a five star review for the doctors. The billing department is horrible! So if you get stressed out with money think twice. You will get stressed out. They have for the past year or more sent my paper bill to the wrong address. Then I call them and go back-and-forth and try to correct the issue. I pay over the phone or online after going back-and-forth with them. And then they still send me a bill and they say I am late! Even though I am paid up! I am seriously thinking about cutting back on my visits to the office. Not because of the doctors. But because the billing department is so bad. And it makes no sense to me. My follow-up appointment with Dr. Huang is here at Parkcenter Drive. It is only a couple of buildings next to my primary physician's office. So I have no problem finding this location. Retinal Consultants is at the biggest building on the street. I don't think anyone will miss it. The office of Retinal Consultants is just straight from the main entrance of the building on the ground floor. Very easy to find. They have many Parking spaces in front of the building marked for Retinal Consultants' patients too. I have a 7:45 am appointment. Dr. Huang's assistant gets all the screenings and pre-scans done before 8 am. Dr. Huang came to my room a little after eight. She is very nice and checks my eyes very carefully. Then, she was happy to let me know the laser treatment was very successful last time. I don't have to get a follow-up laser treatment today! What a wonderful gift for me today! Thank you! Dr. Huang. I hope all the doctors are as good as you. I have a follow-up appointment five months later. I'm not going to worry about my eyes anymore. read more

My second occasion to visit and be treated by Dr Tsai and his team, today namely Dr Huang. From my retina reattachment 5 years ago Dr Tsai performed with ease and perfection to (today) diagnosis of an eye infection/inflammation that was not picked up by my Primary Care nor Optometrist- on a hunch I booked a direct appointment with Retinal consultants. The entire experience is pleasant and professional. The staff exudes confidence and kindness and sincere friendliness. I give them 11 stars! read more

My father has seen Dr. Telander for years and he has been great. A previous doctor and surgery further damaged his eye, however Dr. Telander was able to stabilize and keep his eye stable post the trauma from surgery. Dr. Telander has explained my fathers condition with patience and is incredibly kind when we visit. He is an absolute gem of a human being/doctor and would recommend him for conditions he specializes in. read more

Fantastic when I had my retinal tear, had to put oil in eye due to elevation. However when it came time to schedule surgery for oil bubble I called and called for three weeks straight. No callback. Yesterday I got a call from Cindy in surgery saying that there is a national oil shortage on surgeries in their office. I called around to some San Francisco retinal surgeons and this is the first time they've heard of the shortage. I guess I'll have to look elsewhere for surgery. read more

The people here are really friendly Joseph and Danny took real good care of me Danny made sure the doctor got to see the whole picture of my eye. Be prepared to wait. And wait. Aaannnddd wait. At least an hour from appointment time to seeing the doctor. One day it was two, although at least the doctor apologized for things being behind schedule that day. They'll fake you out along the way. Sometimes one of the assistants will come out and dilate whoever's in the waiting room, five to ten people at a time. Maybe you're getting closer? Nope...that only means you might be headed towards your initial exam with another assistant. After that exam, you might be lucky enough to get to the second waiting room. This area is where we've seen frustration really start to boil over in customers who have been pushed to the limit with their patience. It was a little frightening one day when a guy was so angry that he threw all his belongings against a wall and stormed out, screaming the whole time about how he'd already been waiting an hour in one waiting room, he damn sure wasn't waiting in another one. It's hard to comprehend why they don't stagger their appointment times a little better. It seems kind of pointless to be punctual when it's just a waiting game every time. We've had to go once a month for the last four months and the wait is always absurd. I feel so fortunate to at least not be the one who's waiting all that time to get a needle injected in my eye, but I always feel so bad for the BF. Fortunately, the doctor is the one redeeming quality here. He is quite friendly, seems to be thorough, and is always willing to answer any questions we have. The support staff that hovers around him are generally professional and kind. The office staff can be a little off-putting. They generally don't even acknowledge you as you sign the check-in sheet. While sitting in the waiting room, they can often be overheard making derogatory remarks about customers who have called on the phone. Not cool. And it makes that interminable wait seem even longer. read more

I noticed all of the bad reviews were a few years older than the good reviews. I've been seeing Dr. Reed for a few years for diabetic retinopathy. It got so bad he had to perform surgery which was a huge success! All of the doctors, surgical staff, office staff, and back office staff are exceptional. There are not enough superlatives to describe Retinal Consultants! They have offices all over northern California. I will forever be grateful to Dr. Reed and the staff for saving my eyesight. read more

My boyfriend had abnormal photos in an exam with an optometrist. Since I'm an optician by trade and he was being referred for possible retinitis pigmintosa I circumvented the referral and reached out to several Optometrists I've worked with or know for the best referral recommendation. I was referred to Retinal Consultants. When at our first appointment the Ophthalmologist Dr. Equi ordered photos which were inconclusive. We we're paying out of pocket and more than willing to pay for what we thought was the best care possible. The consult was $200 plus another $250 for photos (or around that). We were sent on to their location in Roseville for an EKG test of his eyes. There was no doctor, only a technician and office staff. All were nice enough but it was weeks before we were seen in East Sac again by Dr. Equi who is only available on Wednesday's so our appointments were pushed out over several months. Now, it has already been unnerving receiving a possible diagnosis for further evaluation for a eye disease you can go blind from. So unfortunately (I kick myself in the pants) for not being able to get out of work to go to this last appointment. My boyfriend is hard of hearing and Dr. Equi asked if the doctor in Roseville had shared anything with him, to which he replied, No... The doctor then shared that it is RP and all that can be done is further evaluation in a year or so. My boyfriend was taken back and wasn't able to get his questions answered nor was he in the frame of mind to think what to ask. the doctor said, If you have any questions give me a call. So my boyfriend has called the practice two times and left a message asking someone to call as he doesn't even remember if he was diagnosed with RP or Macular Degeneration. We also have a 6 month old and are concerned that there could be possible genetic factors to consider. I really can't believe the lack of care and follow-up to not call a patient back after receiving such a prognosis. It looks like it's not the first time patients have been disappointed. Again, I can't believe I sought what I thought would be the best care for my boyfriend and he was very unclear of what he should expect or what his options were. When we discussed his experience so many questions popped up like going blind, is this hereditary? Is there things we should be doing? Is that really it? We'll check it in a year? The reason for the one star is for the complete lack or care or concern to return a phone call. Especially when left a message like, I just don't remember what the doctor diagnosed me with and I have some questions. The doctor seemed competent and I have no idea if he consulted with the EKG doctor in Roseville as it would've been nice to know the determining factors for the prognosis. Or even receive a hand out or information. For the prices they charge including some patient education or collateral or even offering technology solutions like being able to email questions or link to education or feel like the staff actually cared about your health and follow-up is a priority. I guess we won't hold our breath for a return call. read more

I have had some serious eye surgeries, but all my "eye work" was done at Kaiser. When I switched jobs and insurance, I had to find a new retina doctor. I did a google search, found this group, and made sure my insurance was accepted there. Check, check, check. Had my first appointment last week, and it was an overall good experience. I had my husband drop me off at the street to avoid the for-pay parking lot. I can't drive myself to these appointments when I know they are going to dilate my eyes, but if you're planning to drive, just know the parking isn't free. (Or maybe they validate. Hm. Well, I dunno, but there is a ticket machine at the entry, so you'll have to sort that out yourself.) Anyway, the staff was all nice, and in particular, Dr. Pearlman was very friendly. He actually knew my Kaiser ophthalmologist, which put me at some ease that I was kind of getting continued care. I'm not sure why this facility gets any stars. I had surgery 2-1/2 years ago and I'm still experiencing eye issues. The wait in the Folsom office is outrageous!!!! Dr Wendel is quite cocky. I have been seeing Dr. Equi for several years now - first for emergency surgery for a nearly detached retina, then for follow up treatments and related conditions. Dr. Equi has always been very good and conversational at explaining both the conditions I have had to deal with, future risks to my eye, and treatments going forward. I definitely trust him with my eyesight - for me that's a KEY trait - that and getting positive results from the treatments I have received so far (including having to get a series of (painless) shots in the eye. The staff has also been professional and efficient for all my visits since 2011. A typical wait could be anywhere from 10 - 25 mins depending on other critical cases they have to deal with on any particular day. I would definitely recommend Retinal Consultants and especially Dr. Equi fto take care of your eye health. read more

Based upon a disappointing experience yesterday, my review is split between a 5 Star for Dr. Pearlman and a 1 Star for the front desk staff. I have personally been treated by Dr. P for years in Modesto, where the staff is highly competent. It goes without saying that the physician is one of the best in his field of expertise. I will be losing him as my eye doctor due to Obamacare ( don't get me started !!! ), but he is not the problem at his Sacramento location, where I took my mother-in-law yesterday. Since she is elderly, I assisted my relative with her entry paperwork, but dealing with an insolent, off putting female receptionist was almost too much to handle. I have never dealt with such as dismissive medical staffer in my lifetime. I almost asked for the office manager, to inquire if the practice group would like to hire me to retrain their non-clinical staff in a little something called Customer Service. I heartily recommend Dr. P, especially if you have retinal concerns. He is the best, hands down, but please visit another location where he practices. The Sac office is the pits..... read more

I can't say enough great things about Dr. Tsai who, when my schedule ophthalmologist was closed on a Friday and my appointment was the following Monday - saw and treated my retinal detachment after hours! I can't recall (save an ER) any outpatient experience where the Dr. drove an hour away and calmly but deliberately and expertly took my case with a such a sense of urgency. Dr. Tsai was not only expert at his craft but explained the procedure for my retina repair so well I completely understood it. He followed up on a Saturday too! His treatment and my recovery fell exactly has he said it would - i am forever grateful for the above and beyond help. The whole office too carry the friendly positive vibe as Dr. Tsai. So, I was super nervous to even call and schedule an appointment after being referred to the Retinal Consultants by an Optometrist who found something "alarming" in my eye after doing an Optimap test (a scan of 300 degrees of the eye). I actually waited about 3 weeks to call and finally got the courage to find out how much it would cost (I do not have insurance) and what would be done at that first appointment. The receptionist on the phone was so polite and so helpful and very kind. I explained I was really nervous and she was very understanding. She helped me to schedule my appointment and transferred me to the Billing Dept so I could get an accurate cost for the initial appointment. The Billing Dept (Andrea) was also super helpful. She went over all the expected costs with me and then was patient enough to go over all the possible costs (depending on any additional tests that were most likely for my condition), so there would be no surprises when I was at the appointment (SUPER important when you are paying out-of-pocket). She also gave me her direct line and advised me to call her anytime and to call even when I was at the appt if I wasn't sure if the tests or actions being done were included in the original charges she quoted me. That is above and beyond. When I arrived at the appt, the Registration Clerk (Magen) was very helpful. She was polite and efficient -she helped me complete the paperwork and informed me as to what to expect next. While waiting to be seen by the doctor I observed Magen help other patients as they arrived and waited. Many of the patients were elderly and she was very patient with them and very kind. She came out from behind the desk to return patients' paperwork and insurance cards (she didn't just call their names for them to come up and get it themselves). She came out and helped to physically walk an elderly lady to the back. I've worked in healthcare before. These are all "above and beyond" actions that gave me the impression she really cared about the patients. That was very nice to see. And, the doctor! I chose Dr. Pearlman out of the list of possible providers when I made my appointment, and I am so glad I did. I chose very well! Dr. Pearlman was so awesome - I would recommend him to anyone who ever needed to see an eye doctor. First off, the "condition" the Optimap found was a false read by the laser when reconstructing the image. The Optometrist who read the test results (who ultimately referred me to Retinal Consultants) had no idea what the red mark was at the end of a blood vessel in my eye and she was quite concerned. I showed a screen shot of the Optimap image (on my phone) to Dr Pearlman and he knew immediately what it was - an error in the image! We did all the tests I had pre-paid for (which I was fine with, because I was, coincidentally, symptomatic in the eye that had the false mark... I was experiencing black dots in my field of vision and slight increase in perceived pressure in that eye...). All the tests came back that my eyes are super healthy - yay! And Dr. Pearlman went over with me what the symptoms were most likely caused by - migraines. Cool - I can live with that. I don't have to have a needle stuck in my eye and I'm not losing vision permanently in my eye. I explain all this in detail because it illustrates just how "on top of his game" Dr. Pearlman is. Also, he was very personable (not arrogant like most specialists can be). Although he speaks quickly, he was not rushing me. He answered every question I had and even questions I didn't know to ask. And after my husband and I left the office (we were about 100 yards down the hall) Dr. Pearlman literally came running out after us because there was one other area he wanted to go over with me (a freckle in each eye that he recommended be checked once a year). He went over the medical information regarding this and what to expect and all the pertinent information. I felt very informed about my eye health when I walked out of the Medical Office. (When was the last time you saw a Specialist run after a patient to give them information that one of their assistants could have easily called them with? Me - never!) That was above and beyond! Anyway - I felt cared-for and well-informed during this whole experience (from scheduling an appt to getting an accurate quote of the costs to the actual tests and "diagnoses" at the appt). I hope I never need to see a Retinal Specialist again, but if I do, I will certainly be sure to schedule with Dr. Pearlman. read more

This place has got to have one of the worst receptionist working there. SANDY, works as the receptionist, where you go to check in, waited one hour before they calledme all because she couldn't contact the doctor who referreed me to this place. She comes off as rude and unprofessional as she slams my file into the slot where I was automatically called in. If I was a doctor there I would reprimand her for treating my patients with no curteousy or lack of professional service. DESPITE of my 1HOUR WAIT the doctor was ok. There IS a reason why I'm the first to give a review about this place when it has been in business for a long time and that is because there's nothing good to say about the quality of service received by the medical staff!!! read more

I had a detached retina and was referred to the Retinal Consultants. Dr Medina did my surgery and he was wonderful. But because of where I live my follow up visits have been to the Roseville office. The Dr. at Roseville, Dr Tealander is very patient friendly and seems to know what he is doing. However, you honestly do feel like cattle being pushed through this office. Wait time to see the dr is usually over an hour. My issue with the Retinal consultants has been with prescriptions and disability. My last visit showed that there was some swelling by my retina and I was prescribed two prescriptions. Sadly one of the prescriptions was not covered by my insurance so the pharmacist tried to contact the doctor to get a replacement eye drop. The office did not pick up the call or return it after a message was left. Next the pharmacist sent a fax over requesting a replacement Eye drop and again there was no response. Next, I called the doctor explained what it happened and requested that a new prescription be called in I was told that they would call in a new prescription however when I contacted the pharmacy no new prescriptions have been called in. After numerous phone calls to the doctors office it's now been over a month since I was prescribed eyedrops and to this day I still do not have the replacement I drop. My second issue is with The staff ( or person) that works the disability accounts. Over a month ago I requested an extension on my disability however to this day I have not heard back whether the disability has been approved or not approved. I understand that the doctor needs to approve the extension however for some reason they're not able to get a hold of the Dr. Now my extension has expired and a new disability claim will have to be opened. Unbelievable. The drs here are very good at what they do. Sadly, you feel like cattle while you are there and the majority of the office staff have absolutely no customer service skills. read more

All of the preliminary exam staff were very nice, efficient and professional. My doctor was Dr. Wendel and I was very impressed. He is very personable and made my visit a good experience. The doctors here are nice, but they're overbooked - in both the Roseville location and Sacramento. Every visit has had at least a 1 hour wait until even being called back for an eye exam. The overworked staff seem too tired to attempt manners beyond efficient. During our last visit (10/14/16), we were there 2.5 HOURS for my husband to receive an injection in his eye that shouldn't take more than 30minutes with an eye exam. (I had to miss a work meeting because of the extensive delay.) The patients were treated like cattle - all 15 sitting in the waiting room as the nurse came through administering eye drops (for dilation), moving from one patient to the next. Then, in front of the entire group, patients were forced to watch a video on their upcoming procedure - something that seems to invade patient privacy (because I now know what procedure that patient was going to have). It's embarrassing and awkward for everyone. If you can go to another retinal specialist, I'd recommend it. (This is the only one our insurance will cover.) read more

My husband had retina detachment a month ago and was referred to Retina consultants. His first surgery was with Dr Pearlman. It went ok and we were given instructions of what to expect. On Monday this week he had another Retina detachment in the same eye, he saw Dr Wendell. He order surgery the next morning.he did not speak to me before or after surgery. The day after surgery we saw him for recheck. He did answer questions about what he did in surgery. He did not tell us how different this recovery would be. My husbands eye lid swelled shut and turned purple. He had puss coming out of the eye and could not open his eye with out help. We got scared so we called the on call doctor. He said it sounds ok but come in and see Dr Wendell that morning. We were greeted by Doctor Wendell with arrogance and abrupt rudeness, he acted like the eye looked the same and wasn't worse and said if it is it is normal. I told him we didn't know what to expect. He said well I'm telling you now. He then turned to the nurse and said they actually called Dr. Si at 2:00! As if we were stupid and waisted his time. I said we didn't know what to expect and he was such an ass! He basically acted like we were completely stupid and wasting his time. We were escorted out feeling confused and insecure of the future eye site for my husband. He works as a software engineer for HP. We are not uneducated. No one should ever be treated so badly by anyone especially their healthcare provider. I'm so tired of our communities putting up with this terrible behavior of Doctors just because they are good at surgeries or procedures. They should be required to treat the whole person not treat us like our need to understand is beneath them! Don't ever call this practice for you or your loved one you will regret it and maybe even have permanent loss of sight. read more
