As part of this year's Spring Tune-up, I went in knowing I had to have my brakes checked as well as possibly getting a new chain cassette as my gears were not working properly in the 3-5 shift range. After consultation with me, Dean also informed me that my rear tire had dry rot and should be replaced. I had him replace the tube also. He also noticed the handlebars headset was quite loose and needed attention. He had to order the part for that fix. In all, Retro installed the new cassette and chain, adjusted shifting, replaced the rear brake cable, housing, and pads, adjusted both brakes, cleaned the frame and replaced and adjusted the headset, all for around $200. When I came to pick up my bike, Dean stated that he noticed my handle grips were very sticky and worn. He said he put on some better take off grips Retro had in the store and did not charge me for them! Now, that is taking care of a loyal customer! I even got a $10 discount on the final billing based on the points I accumulated in the past year. The bike rides like new and the handle grips are better than my old originals. I saw that this shop was a Dealer for Velotric so I called here to see about the bike. Julian answered the phone and was so kind, patient and helpful as well as everyone that I've encountered here. The owner told me that she did not have my bike in stock but she already had some on order, one of which was the small size that I needed and they would be in shortly. She honored the online price that I found the bike for, gave me a discounted price on shipping and included the assembly. I was thrilled that I had my bike in time for a trip that I was going on. When I picked up my bike, they made recommendations for the carrier and loaned me an apparatus to make it safer for me to transport the bike home. The customer service at this shop is wonderful. I'm genuinely disappointed to be writing this review because I walked into Retro Cycles on Orange Ave expecting professionalism, attention to detail, and basic care for a customer's safety. Instead, I walked away with a bill over $120--and a bike that left me stranded more than 20 miles from home because of something that should have never happened. Story time... I came in with a simple need: fix my rear flat and replace my pedals. I even called ahead and was quoted roughly $40-$50. Straightforward. But once I arrived, the inspection led to a recommendation to replace both tires, the pedals, and additional upgrades, bringing the total to more than double the original quote. I didn't mind the upsell because I trusted that they were guiding me toward what my bike genuinely needed. I agreed because I assumed they were being thorough. But that assumption was a mistake. They told me both tires needed replacing due to wear and tear--fine. What they didn't tell me was that both inner tubes should be replaced as well. They replaced the rear tube but never once suggested replacing the front. Not a call. Not a question. Not a moment of proactive thinking. And honestly, that's where everything went downhill. A reputable bike shop should have the foresight to say, "Hey, if we're replacing both tires, do you also want both inner tubes replaced?" That's basic completeness. That's basic customer care. That's basic professionalism. But they didn't do that. They simply didn't think ahead. Because of that lack of attention, I took my freshly serviced bike on an urban ride, hopped on the train to Kissimmee, and the moment I arrived--my front tire was flat. Completely flat. After just having spent over $120 for what I thought would be a fully reliable setup. I called Retro Cycles, expecting at least some empathy, accountability, or willingness to help. Instead, I was met with a dismissive response along the lines of: "Well, you didn't tell us to replace the front tube." No acknowledgment that they had every opportunity to recommend it. No owning the fact that their oversight left a customer stranded 20+ miles away. Just indifference. At that point, I had no choice but to pay for an Uber XL to get myself and my bike back home. A completely unnecessary expense caused by a lack of forethought and a lack of genuine customer care. I can honestly say that Retro Cycles failed me--miserably. I expected more from a neighborhood bike shop. I expected professionalism. I expected someone to think one step ahead, not just do the bare minimum and send me on my way with a hidden problem waiting to appear the moment I took my bike out. I judge a bike shop by how confidently I can ride after a service. And in this case, the very first ride proved their work incomplete and their advice inadequate. The damage is done. The trust is broken. If you're looking for a shop that thinks about your safety, your ride, and your experience--not just the transaction--this is not it. read more

I had a flat tire and happened to be in the area and so stopped by, and I'm happy that I did! First off, the staff was super friendly and generally wanted to help you out. Since my flat was caused by a shard of glass in the tire, I figured I just wanted to repair the tube instead of replacing it. I ended up buying a tire patch kit and was even able to do the repair right by the shop, they were friendly about that. I had been meaning to do a bike tuneup for a while and while I was there I figured why not schedule right there and then! I ended up dropping off the bike and I was able to get the basic tuneup and get new tires and they took care of it all effectively. I've now had a good couple of rides since that tune up and I'm loving it! I will definitely be back whenever I need any other bike services and again, I can't speak enough of the friendly staff. read more

Considering the deplorable interaction I had with the husband of the owner (whether or not he can be considered co-owner is outside my purview) following a bike accident I had (resulting in me breaking my arm), it seems that they have been able to deceive their customers. Given my experience with Retro City Cycles, I find the business lacks integrity and character demonstrated by the attitude and actions of the staff and specifically the owner(s). If there was a minus rating I would select it. HORRIBLE experience and nasty and arrogant personnel. Called to have my brakes upgraded on my ebike. Was told it would be ready the next day....2 days later I hear nothing. I call to find out the status and I'm told they don't even know how to do the wiring for the brakes BUT no one calls to tell me. I call and got the run around. An idiot by the name of Dan tells me "we're only human dude" when I told him the owner told me it would be ready the day after I dropped it off.Then this clown started giving all these excuses why they haven't worked on my bike and why I wasn't contacted. When I told him I was contacting the owner about his attitude he started yelling "dude you better not get me fired!" I got a email from the owner telling me they reached out to the manufacturer of my ebike for advice on how to change the brakes. I responded to the email telling the owner about my experience and I have yet to get a response. Told them not yo touch my bike and I was coming pick it up on the 4th day of them having it. Ok experience here - not the most customer centric staff I have met. Did little to enhance my desire to revisit them should I need service or a new bike. Just a simple sorry or thank you would go a very long way. On the first visit for a tuneup and fix they didn't really address the issues and then there was this strange interaction with the couple that owns the place regarding a charge that seemed to increase for no particular reason. Had to take the bike back for the same issue which they still can't figure out. I mean we are not talking rocket science here. Retro City Cycles is as good as small bike shops get. Sure, you won't get the massive selection you might at a Dave's or Orange, but it's more than made up for with quality, personal service. In my case, I was looking for a good urban commuter bike, which led me to the Jamis Coda line, in particular the Coda Elite. This, in turn, brought me to Retro City as it's one of the few--if not the only--Jamis dealers in the city. Alas, they did not have the bike I was looking for in stock and could not locate any in the region. Upon my asking, though, they were happy to call their distributors for any residual earlier-year stock lying around. Indeed, an older--but still new--bike was available. From a better model year, at that. That said, the bike being from a previous year, Retro City gave me a nice discount without any request to do so. Since then, I've brought the bike in for (free) servicing a couple of times and had a tire replaced under warranty. The staff has also been very helpful in recommending accessories. The best part of the Retro City experience is that staff. They are universally knowledgeable and helpful, but never pushy. Not once has anyone attempted to "sell" me something at Retro City. I've been assisted many times, of course, but there's no sales pressure. Simply put, Retro City Cycles is your friendly local bike shop, and an excellent one at that. read more

Love the shop and the owners but wouldn't trust one of their bike technicians to work on a sketch pad with crayons. Had to take my bike to a different shop that got it right the first time. The second bike shop was very surprised in the work and quality. I spent A LOT of money here to get things done "right" and wasn't happy with the quality of work at Retro. I have been searching for a cruiser so that I could save some cash on gas. A friend of mine got a really awesome used bike from Retro City Cycles so I ran in the other day on the way home from work. THey have an awesome selection and a really knowledgeable staff. I'm not someone who looks like a biker but I didn't feel un-welcome and they helped me decide what bike I should buy when I'm ready. They are a little pricey though so I'm going to have to wait. I'm excited for when I can go back and bring a cruiser home and some of those awesome padded butt shorts too! read more

In the same plaza as the funky music store Rock-n-Roll Heaven, you'll find this little bike shop out to serve the individual instead of the masses. It's clear and refreshing that they aim for quality versus quantity. With the small space they occupy, they have bikes, clothing and gear for the recreational as well as competitive cyclist. In front of the store on the sidewalk, you'll find comfort bikes and road bikes, both new and used. Once inside you'll see that the square footage may be slim, but the products and service is exemplary. The associate working was gracious and left me to happily browse. I was happy to know they do repair work as well which is helpful should you encounter a problem you can't fix on your own. And being that bikes aren't always easy to fix, this is a convenience of great proportions for all of us who know little about mechanics. This was my first time here. I needed some bike maintenance done. They responded quick to my email for a quote for the service and their prices were considerably less than other shops. Staff was very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. The service was completed as promised and it cost less than the original quote. I called four bicycle repair shops in the Orlando area to ask for a simple brake maintenance service. One demanded $100 for general maintenance service. The next three places refused to work on electric bikes. Retro Bikes, however, welcomed me. I did not get the name of the gentleman who assisted me, but he was courteous, patient and extremely helpful. He spent about 20 minutes, wheeling my bicycle to the back door and into the parking lot for a test spin three times. He did some tweaking but his initial diagnosis was correct: there was nothing wrong with my brakes. The problem was they felt sluggish to me because they were disc brakes and I was used to hydraulic brakes on an electric bike. He patiently explained how different brakes work differently on various bikes, and reviewed the various prices and options for upgrading. At the end of his checkup. he refused to accept any payment from me. His professionalism, courtesy and generosity are rare indeed these days. I drove 40 minutes to get to his shop. I will happily do so again for future checkups and purchases. read more

Every other month or so I drag my '93 Schwinn over to these guys for one repair or another. It's a small shop but I vastly prefer its laid-back and friendly attitude. I.e., where at Orange Cycle multiple reps circle like sharks and can't leave you alone, here the staff is helpful, knowledgeable, and chill. I'll take the service here any day. I once called to ask a question about a bicycle seat I ordered online but had trouble installing. They had me bring it in and fixed it on the spot free of charge. Needless to say I won't be buying any bike seats online anymore. Of note: you get a 10% discount on parts and service if you ride your bike in. This is my go-to bike repair shop. read more

I just bought a bike from these guys and couldn't have had a better experience. They spent a ton of time answering all of my questions and were incredibly patient while I tested bikes. They made great suggestions about products based on what I told them I wanted, but I never felt like I was being upselled things I didn't need. All of the staff I talked to (Nick, Jessica and Steven) were awesome. I never felt like I was talking to a salesperson, but rather just a person who loves bikes. They were super genuine and honest about all of the products. They are knowledgeable but not condescending (I knew nothing about bikes). I would give it 3.5 stars, but sometimes the service is lacking. I have bought three bikes here over the past two years, great bikes. I wanted to buy my gf a bike for her bday, so I took her here. She picked out a bike she liked, and they ordered it for her (needed a smaller frame). Perfect! When it finally came in, the frame was still a little long for her, so they ordered a replacement part to shorten the bike. I was told that since both parts were about equal in price, they would just change out the piece for no additional charge ( I had just spent over $700 the week before). It took a week for the part to come in, and once it did, was charged over $30 to replace part ( a 3 minute job). Not cool. read more

Took my MTB in after bending rear derailleur during wknd ride at Snow Hill. Had it fixed and cleaned up in a day, rides and looks about as good as the day I bought it. What a find. I am new to the area and needed to find a new bicycle for my 9 y/o son. I found this shop online and really lucked out. The staff at Retro City were outstanding. They treated us like family from the second we walked in the door. The selection is great for a small independent retailer and the prices fair. They had plenty of quality options for both adults and kids. They even have used bikes for sale on consignment. We found the perfect mountain bike for my son. The staff had him ride the bike and offered to make all the adjustments immediately to ensure a perfect, safe fit for him. They even installed all of the accessories he wanted immediately. They have a great trade-in program for the growing kids, so you can keep them riding as they grow without having to buy a full price bike each time. They have a free tune-up program for the bike and notify you when you are due to bring the cycle in for its service.
