Awesome selection of games, staff is very helpful and the few times I have been in so far I never had a bad experience. I so far am only Trading games or buying, trade value has been fair, prices to buy depends on the game but generally in line compared to say an eBay. I try to check prices in there vs eBay and if it's close or higher but reasonably so, I'll buy from here as I want to see places like this thrive and we'll yeah, brick and mortar has overhead. So if you think you will price match eBay, you MAY see close prices on some things but by and large expect to pay more, 10%, 20%, maybe 30% more. The cost of not doing business with eBay or Amazon, else this kind of store goes bye bye. In return you help support local business. Their second location is even bigger and amazing. Although I think they are capitalizing on our childhoods by charging an outrageous amount for classic games, the selection is second to none in the area. Pretty much any game you're interested in can be found here. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable yet not overbearing. I can't get over the hefty prices though, for games that can be found on eBay for a fraction of the cost. Gotta stay in business somehow these days, and these stores are a dying breed unfortunately. Pretty great selection, staff was nice enough, but there is no reason for a video game store to be up selling this much. The game market is inflated as is, yet they are adding 100 dollars to average sale prices for collector's games. Every title I looked it for my collection from the 30 dollar range to the 500 dollar ranged was pumped up extra by the store. Please don't support this. Go to another game store. I prefer to support local business, but in cases like this, maybe you should just order online. If the same rare (or not so rare) games are available much cheaper online, why give your money to these people? I was very disappointed. My husband and I are video game collectors and have been for a long time. He is military so we have moved around a lot and have been to countless video game stores. This store is downright insulting to game collectors. Don't get me wrong, they have a lot of unique and hard to find games and hardware. It is really fun to look around because they have things you don't see too often. BUT....like many other reviews have said...they are so overpriced! It's absolutely ridiculous. Do they not think people do their research or know the market at all??? The staff was less than helpful and not very friendly. I overheard someone come in and try to sell some games. I don't know what they were but The staff weren't interested. Which I understand, it happens but they way they talked to him! It was rude and condescending. The whole "why are you wasting my time" attitude. It was just mind boggling how they treat people like that. Not to mention the insulting prices. We have been to this place twice, because I think it's important to give a place a second chance. Maybe a staff member was having a bad day...? But nope. This is how it is here. Retro Game Trader's inventory is easily the best of any shop in the area. If you're looking for a specific title from the NES era all the way to the PS3, these guys are more likely than not to have it in stock. Just be prepared to pay a little extra than you would online or at another shop. In a previous review, I knocked this place for customer service, but they've gotten much better. They think everything they sell is a entire gold mine like everything is worth a million bucks. All their shit is over priced and the bald dude is rude and trade in vale or cash means nothing to the customer for them. 80 bucks for Zelda on n64 without box or booklet is insane and 80 for a n64 controller. When you first pull up to this place you can tell that it's going to be quite the game store, giant posters in the windows of all your favorite game characters referencing how many systems they carry games for. It's pretty impressive. As soon as you step into the store you're greeted by a massive amount of Sega games, they even have the LaserActive with the Sega game packs, a unique find that most people probably have never even heard of. They had quite a few boxed consoles ranging from the Intellivision up to the Xbone. The reason I give this place an average rating is the pricing. It is completely absurd, from what I saw many of the games were priced double the perceived ebay value. $84 for Smash Bros Melee, $90 for Toe Jam & Earl on Genesis, etc. They had a clearance section that I had hoped would be a bit of a saving grace, but as expected they were mostly sports games. Of course I know that retro gaming is an expensive hobby these days, but you'd have to be completely desperate and incapable of using the internet to cave and purchase a game at these inflated prices. With all that said, I would still recommend stopping by and checking out the store. Newer games may be reasonably priced but if you are looking for any type of retro games, stick to online. read more

I used to spend a lot of money here and really loved their selection. This was until I caught them switching out case art on disk based games, Genesis games, and DS games with repro case art, on numerous occasions. After this, I began shopping there way less. The last time I was in there, the girl behind the counter refused to give an 8 year old boy a refund on a broken Pokemon Game Boy Advance game he had purchased the previous day because, "I'm sorry, we don't offer refunds or exchanges on repro games that we sell." The kid was 8 years old and doesn't even know what a repro or US copyright laws are. I haven't shopped there since they took advantage of this kid. For those who don't know, a repro game is an unauthorized reproduction, aka: a pirated game. Selling repro games, especially under a business, is highly illegal under Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17). read more

Wow! What a selection of retro hardware and games. The majority of the inventory is in really great shape. I have read some reviews complaining about the prices. Yes, they are higher than eBay or a flea market. However, the quality of the merchandise demands a higher price. I would rather pay a little more for a game that is in mint condition and take it home the same day. Not to have to wait for the seller to mail it to me, praying that the item is as described. The 3 stars is purely based on the vast collection and selection of video games that they have. They had everything I was looking for and was like a kid in a candy store walking into this place The negative is that they claim to test everything before sale, I was sold 2 broken n64 controllers (joysticks didn't work). I came in this afternoon with a wishlist of 40+ games expecting to maybe find one or two of them. They ended up having just about all of them! Their selection is vast and well-organized. Their staff seems to have a genuine love and enthusiasm for games, yet the atmosphere is open and not at all intimidating. After losing track of time browsing all of the amazing games and rare hardware, I set my sights on three Genesis games (focusing on one system helped me narrow down my options). All of them worked great at home in my RetroN 5. I will definitely be back. I think I've found my new favorite store! read more

Retro Game Trader definitely has the largest collection of retro & vintage video games in the greater Portland area. The store is clean and every game is alphabetized. Their clearance section is their best feature which offers either 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 deals on retro games. No other store in the area has anything like this. They also offer a free bin where you can get free games that are case-less, poor sellers, extra inventory, etc. Each purchase also qualifies you for a free game from a selection right behind the check-out area. Definitely a huge plus, I won't ever say no to a free game regardless of quality. You may be thinking that I'd rate this place 5 stars. I would if it wasn't for their pricing. They are definitely above eBay prices and above most of the prices in the Portland area. It's unfortunate because I really like this store but due to pricing I don't frequent here as much as other stores in the area. If you're looking for a retro game and can't find it locally this place will most likely have it. Be sure to check eBay pricing to see if you're getting a decent deal for that impulse buy. read more

This place is SO SO GREAT. We had no idea it existed, and wanted to purchase an original Nintendo Wii which, of course, they were happy to assist us in obtaining. The package came bundled with a Wiimote and all cables, which can be somewhat rare these days (Nintendo 3DS for retail purchase WITHOUT a charger included is still the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard) The customer service is beyond awesome; the associates are incredibly well informed about all things retro gaming, and are so kind and willing to help. I find myself in a wonderful mood every time I'm in the establishment. It's also incredibly clean and expertly organized. It's just a fun place to be. You can't help but be starry eyed by the whole experience! The game selection is EXTENSIVE. They literally have everything. It can be pricey, especially for the much coveted choices, but are none the less reasonable. This worked out for me well when I decided it was finally time to part with my SNES and N64 collection. They were collecting dust in my closet and I felt, especially after witnessing the true greatness at Retro Game Trader, someone else could appreciate them properly and they could bring a smile to someone else's face now. I expected to receive, maybe, $30 for the collection (they HAD been in my closet for close to 10 years without much use) but was astounded that they offered me over $150 store credit, which was ideal as I wanted to nerd out at their store and go hog wild with whatever I received. I think I was too accustomed to the GameStop model of purchasing anything, regardless of value, for less than a quarter of what is deserved... We used our credit to purchase a 2DS (my boyfriend already had a 3DS that was never used as we couldn't play together...) along with Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire and thus began an amazing afternoon of incredible nostalgia. We really couldn't be happier. Really, really. ALSO THEY OFFER WARRANTIES ON LIKE, EVERYTHING. This place is an absolute gem. I recommend it to anyone and everyone who loves old games, or even just wants to take a walk down memory lane. They have some AMAZING collectibles. It's well worth an afternoon of exploration. This place is amazing. All their games are about 3x more expensive then they are literally anywhere else in world but the store is incredible. They have almost every single game for every console. I don't think I would ever buy a game from them in a million years though. However they do have some good prices on retro game consoles and accessories. And apparently they have some games on clearance but I wasn't really sure where they were located I just heard somebody else talking about it. The staff definitely aren't the best. They were friendly but were also not very knowledgeable on certain things. I ended up buying an in box N64 in perfect condition for a good price of $150. However then I wanted to get an expansion pack in box and I pointed to the one that was in a plastic protector and said $49 but then she grabbed the one not in a protector that did $59 and said "Oh you're getting a good deal on that we just raised the prices on all these and forgot to mark up this one" even though they literally had like 5 in protectors that's said $49. It was still a decent price but it felt pretty crappy to be lied to. Also while trying to get my N64 I had somebody take it out of the case and then he said the person at the cashier will help me next and then walked away and then the person at the cashier started helping somebody else and then I had to wait for another employee and then had to re-explain everything and that I already signed the warranty. Being handed off to 3 different employees didn't feel that great. It was still a cool experience but I left with an uncomfortable feeling. I definitely would go back again, next time I want to try trading in games. I hope since they charge 200-300% more than eBay that they give good trade values but I'll have to wait and see. I've shopped the previous big local retro game shop in Beaverton. This one blows it out of the water. They have games and systems I hadn't even seen before, and they really care about making sure they have as much as possible. I've come in and asked for a game, and when they didn't have it, they wrote down the title on a list and said they'd do their best to order it. One week later, I'm walking out with that game, and at a pretty fair price! I've also gotten some really god payouts for both trading for store credit and in cash. If you like old school games, this is the place in the Portland region to go to. The store is clean, and the staff are very good at what they do. read more

Wonderful store. It is just what you would hope to find in a store like this. The collection is very extensive. This very much has the feel of the old video and gaming stores. Most younger people would have no clue how people would make going to the game store with their friends a 2 hour event for an evening. Out to dinner to the game store and enjoy your time looking, playing and looking at games coming out. Yup they have some fake China made games but they price reflects what they are, it's not like they are trying to pass them off as anything they are not. The pricing you see a few reviews complain about are clearly people that just have no clue what it cost to run a store vs selling online. They are pointing out why these stores aren't around. My son and I went in and spent an hour plus just looking and reminiscing over the games we saw and we did make a purchase. No rush, enjoyed the conversation, enjoyed the information. This is not just a store that sells items you want these stores are about a time, a place where you socialize with other humans that like to talk about gaming. The look and feel of this place is genuine. The owners clearly love games and the gaming industry. Nothing better then looking at the games and equipment and purchasing and item and WALKING OUT OF THE STORE WITH IT. Go enjoy this store. read more

Retro Game Trader is one of the largest used game stores I've seen in the area. If you're looking for a specific game, they'll probably have it- and I'm sure they'll check for it if you call them. Their staff was super helpful to us, and their location has a lot of parking. It's sometimes a bit hard to ask questions because they're so busy, but the employees are happy to help you find items. As soon as I walked in I was blown away by the huge selection and amount of obscure consoles/rare games all in one place. Then after I looked a little closer, I realized why they have so much, THEIR PRICES ARE RIDICULOUS!!!! I have no issue with a little mark up on rarer games since the prices go up so frequently, but the prices here are WAY too high! Games worth about $50 are priced from $70-80!?!?!!?!? It is cool to be able to see all these rare and obscure items, but for collectors who really want to buy them......your better off ordering them on eBay or Amazon. EVERY game that was on my want/need list was there but at a price that I feel I'm paying for the game and how much they gave the person who brought it in. I didn't spend too much time in the location because if I want to give money away, I'd rather give it to a charity. I went once and will not be going again! read more

Every time I've visited I'm always astounded by the great selection of games and consoles. Any game you could ever want is most likely at the Retro Game Trader, plus the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. The only thing that really kills it for me is the insane prices. A lot of the games they have are priced over what you could buy them for at another game store or online. Most times I've shopped there I buy something because they always have great games available, but later I'm disappointed in the choice I made to shop there because I end up paying double what I would have spent if I bought the games anywhere else. For example, one of the times I went there I bought a copy of Red Dead Redemption for the Xbox 360 for $20. After buying it I did some research and found that other game stores around were selling it for the same price, so that's good But last time I went there I bought a copy of Devil Survivor for the DS for $28, that was in a fake ds case (which they changed out for me ) with a printed out cover. I asked what the prices were on PriceCharting and was told they were lower by about 10 to 20 bucks. Not sure why they were selling it for a higher price in the first place, but then I later looked up that I could've bought a brand new sealed copy on amazon for $21. Not too bad of a price difference, but still disappointing. Though I have been wanting to buy one of their Chibi Robo game copies they have there for a while, but $80 is too much whem I could just buy it online for half that price. Place sucks took games and memory cards in there to sell, they looked at my stuff and scoffed at it, then helped their friend instead of me first. The sign outside says pay cash for games. This place has been my go to for anything retro for a couple years. I'd never been here prior to last weekend. I've followed Retro Game Trader on Facebook, I love the memes they put out. Last weekend I finally decided to check out the arcade that they have next door. I took my sons with me because they love retro games as much as I do. We get there and we see Jurassic Park so he proceeds to wait for me there. The associate working here was playing magic with some customers which was kind of cool but she got up to make change for some quarters. She told me that kids aren't allowed to play any of the gun games because they "drop them" and I thought oh that's silly, but respected her rule. Then she yelled from across the room for my son not to touch the Jurassic Park guns. Still kinda brushing it off, we went to go play killer instinct. It ate all 3 quarters we put in. The lady opened the machine up, gave us a couple of extra plays on top of what we put in. We tried another machine that had hundreds of games loaded to it, ate the quarters and we were unable to play. At that point I decided it was time to leave. Moral of the story is I didnt feel very welcome here. Why have an arcade if kids aren't able to play some of the games. Sure wunderland has way more games, but why not support a small business. I'm sure a few quarters from my pocket won't make a difference but maybe try to accommodate future customers better. Good luck. read more
