Honestly if I didn't want a burger as well I probably would have ordered another plate. The burger is delicious, in their menu they specify that all their burgers are cook medium, which was nice to know as I am a well girly. The burger was large and came cooked to order. Biting into this burger solidified that this was going to be a go to spot when I am in Seattle. Meat sourced from a local butcher, cooked, and seasoned well has made this a top favorite burger. The service was good. The lady was polite and attentive to the appropriate amount. And she was quick to check us out once we were done which is always appreciated by me. We decided to eat out after work and I chose Retro which I had wanted to visit for a while but we normally need reservations which it doesn't take. This is a small sized slightly rundown bar vibe with quite a few tables, some board games and a pool table. There is very easy parking right opposite at the 3rd and Stewart Garage which is giant and pretty reasonable for downtown Seattle. Despite the bar vibe children are welcome here and we brought our kid. On arrival, the environment smelt pretty significantly of pot. It didn't seem to be coming from outside, and there wasn't anyone visibly vaping inside. Maybe they allow people to do that at some times and the smell just lingers? Anyway, I don't like that smell at all and I would have left had I not already coordinated my wife to join us at that location. First thing my son said on walking in was "why does it smell bad in here?" After about 10 minutes inside we didn't notice the smell any more, but this was the most significant negative about the visit overall. Service was great. There seemed to be exactly one server working but that was ok for the size of the space and she was regularly checking on us. Order was taken promptly. The menu is diner-type food with a pretty good selection for a not huge place. Food quality was also good. We liked everything we ordered, all of which seemed to be home-made rather than out of the freezer. The home-made mozzarella stick were great. The potato skins were ok but had a bit too much potato left behind (insides were not scooped out). My club sandwich was great. Fresh cut fries are always execellent and these were very good. My wife liked her burger. Menu costs were cheap. For 3 entrees and two apetizers and a couple of sodas the total was less than $90, which is a great deal in Seattle at this point. Food prep/organisation was not good. Both our appetizers arrived after our main courses. My one special request for something on the side was honoured, but my wife's burger came with both the ingredients she had asked to be removed (and which the server both repeated back and wrote down, so probably not her fault). There were a small selection of board games inside (which we didn't play, so no info on their condition/completeness). There was also a pool table that looked in good shape. Overall, there was lots to like here. I would come back again except for the smell. My wife was ok to return, but not excited. Weakly recommended. read more

My friend and I stopped in after exploring the waterfront. We were looking for something small and local and came across Retro Restaurant and Lounge. This review is strictly for the food and customer service. I don't drink, so I can't really speak on the bar itself, but it did appear to be very well stocked. The decor honestly wasn't really my style. It seemed like it was going for a Seattle music/grunge vibe, but it came across more like a middle school bedroom after first discovering classic rock. That said, the food completely made up for it. We ordered the bacon burger and the blue cheese burger, and both were excellent. The burgers were cooked perfectly and tasted homemade -- not like frozen patties tossed on a grill. The customer service was also great, especially considering there was only one staff member working the floor. We arrived when there were only a couple people in the restaurant, but shortly after, a large party came in. Even with that, our server remained attentive to us and everyone else. It's grungy and dingy, and you literally see every walk of life walk in here. We haven't had their food, just drinks. The customer service is always friendly and efficient. Each time we've been here, there's been some patron creating drama, but hey, considering where they're located, you will get some randoms stirring up trouble, unfortunately. We stopped in for a bite to eat, hoping for a relaxing meal and left disappointed. I was hoping to be surprised by the hole in the wall look but we weren't. We got the club and potato skins to eat with two sodas. The skins honestly tasted like nothing which was a shocking feat and the club was pretty dry. The server didn't come back to check in us, offer refills or bring us the check. She was just on her phone behind the bar when I asked to pay the bill. I still left some stars because at least the food was edible and it was a slow quiet place to get a reprieve from the heat outside. AVOID IF you just want cocktails at 1:30pm on a Sunday. Full context: I stumbled upon this place because my sister was shopping at Nordstrom and my friend and I wanted to just have a cocktail (around 1:30pm). We searched a few spots on yelp, but there weren't too many bars open at this time other than hotel bars (within reasonable walking distance). Due to the rave reviews, we decided to check out Retro Restaurant - also because it has a spicy jalapeño margarita on their specialty cocktails menu. When we walked in, everything seemed fine as we were greeted, sat at a table due to the bar being full, and were handed menus. When we ordered our drinks, we informed our server who's also the bartender that we wouldn't be ordering food. This is when things turned south. As she was making the drinks, she made a childish tone and said to the bar patrons, "I haVe To mAKe CocKtAilS" - my friend and I looked at each other knowing what this entailed. By the way, the bar patrons were likely regulars because they helped her pull in produce from a car and they had intimate conversations (apparently someone just got out of prison?). When we got our drinks handed to us, she slammed both drinks on the table. The first one knocked my friend's glasses over which was near the coaster and my drink was slammed so hard that it spilled over. She never brought napkins or said sorry. The 'spicy jalapeno' margarita also had PICKLED jalapeños in it. We couldn't tell if there was even alcohol in our drink because the pickled jalapeño juice overpowered everything. At this point, we just wanted to walk away, but we finished our drinks and paid 40 bucks cash even though our bill was 32 because we just wanted to get out of there as fast as we could. I know it sounds like a big claim, but we didn't feel welcomed at all and we didn't feel safe. I don't think they're racist, but we were the only minorities in the bar and we felt we weren't treated the same as everyone else. I will not be coming here again and recommend others not to - if you want a quick drink, La Llarona is right around the corner and the drinks are cheaper, are presented better, and the service makes you feel like family. Everybody that worked there was nice but when you have a one hour lead time on your tickets you should really let people know. Eventually I asked for my order to be to-go because I'm nervous about whether or not I can make it to my show on time. When I asked the kitchen, they said it would be about another 15 minutes. It was just an unexpectedly long wait. I left with the boxes so that I could put them in my car and get to the show. When I got home I was just kind of bemused at what cost me $25. A non-alcoholic drink and this. The plate is small so it's hard to tell the size but the first and last bites of the slider on the left didn't even have any meatloaf in them. C'mon. I know you're tiny and you only had one person in the kitchen but that's really the worst time to skimp on portions. Potatoes are cheap, be generous. read more

A great local bar with "home cooked" meal food. To start, the atmosphere is lively and there are tables as well as bar seating. The drinks were crafted perfectly and the service was spot on. As far as the food goes, the mozzarella sticks were fresh and crunchy, the meatloaf slider (my favorite) were delicious and the taco salad was a good portion and fresh. Overall, no complaints here. Incredible food, awesome atmosphere, and the best, most attentive service by Dave! This is a scratch kitchen, so whatever you decide to eat will be something you'll remember for some time to come. We ordered the fish and chips, club sandwich, mozzarella sticks, and potato skins! I'm not kidding when I say that each of these items was the best version of them that I've ever had the pleasure to try in my entire life. The ingredients and quality of the food is so fresh and the portion sizes are more than generous. The potato skins were the equivalent of giant pickle spears ( it appears they take a potato and quarter it into giant slices), and were covered in bacon, chives, cheese, and sour cream. The beer is tasty and quite fresh, which is something of a pattern we noticed in Seattle. Great quality water here so the beer just comes out better during the production process. I forget the name, but there's a light beer from Oregon that was the best I had all week here! Lastly, I'd like to thank Dave for being a kickass host/bartender/server, and for treating us like family. You were quick with everything and a pleasure to talk to! I couldn't imagine a friendlier guy! We can't wait to come back to Seattle, and this place is for sure on a shortlist of places to enjoy a meal and a drink. We asked where the nearest kitchen would be, he stated "without f'ing anyone, yardhouse". I don't understand how someone would turn business away when the place was not busy at all. We had to go up to the bar to order, even though they said they'd be overt to our table, and they just had their back to everyone for 5 extra minutes while I waited at the bar to order. On finding out there was a 45 minute wait for food today, we paused only briefly under cover outside the entrance out of the rain briefly to decide whether to wait or go somewhere else, standing out of the way when a couple wanted to go in. Then the bearded nose pierced proprietor accosted us with massive negativity, ordering us to move along, and accusing us of being rude. This is the first time any of my parents' children have ever been accused of not having gracious manners. WOW. Decision made. We left and we won't be back. What an awful man he is! A true bully. I'll die before giving him my money. He tried to intimidate the wrong person me thinks. Bad karma man. He tried but didn't wreck the lovely afternoon the four of us had at Smash Putt next door. I usually try to find a good dive bar when traveling. Sometimes it's a hit, sometimes it's a miss. Retro was out of the park. The food was so good at amazing prices. We had a party of six and we're seated immediately with our drinks ordered. The cheese sticks and onion ring apps were very good and some of the best onion rings I've had in a long time. The chowder was so good with tender whole clams and hunks of potatoes, defiantly homemade with fresh ingredients. The burger was huge on a soft, sturdy bun. Even well done as I like it was tender and juicy. My wife had the fish n chips that were tender and perfectly fried with homemade tarter sauce. Local beers on tap were cold and tasty. We were running out of places to eat on our trip with kid friendly menus and decided to give Retro's a try with our two year old. It was about 5pm on a Sunday so they weren't busy - our burgers and nachos came out before our child's quesadilla which took at least another 7-10 minutes. We also ordered potato skins that were brought out after all the food was, not as an appetizer. They also did not have high chairs or boosters - moral of the story: I highly recommend going elsewhere if you have smaller children. On the plus side, the food was actually pretty good once it finally came out. read more
