It's the night before FIFA and the city is alive with the pulse of summer. Zigzag Café tucked away on a terrace right beneath the Pike Lake Market is probably one of the best secrets of Seattle. When you come to town you want to visit this place... Maybe because of the vibe, maybe because of the mood lighting which is a sultry red, maybe because of the fresh signature roses, maybe because of the outstanding bartenders... Maybe because there's a patio outside under the stars and the lights, but the outstanding cocktails are always past of the experience. But you never get less than outstanding service when you walk into the ZigZag Café. Starts from the top with the owner and filters all the way through the bartenders, servers, and the hostesses. I tried the passionfruit colada and shifted to a whiskey sour with egg whites. Outstanding was the Burrata with yummy fried garlicky lentils, sweet heirloom tomatoes garnished with a generous springy of micro greens and drizzled with a glorious balsamic reduction...and chewy, thick slices of grilled sourdough. Perfection. Bartenders Eli and Ricky were top-notch de rigueur-- this place only has the best bartenders (including the legendary Murray ruled the bar for an era ) -- and Hannah was the hostess with the mostest. Every time I left my seat at the bar I would come back to the folded napkin. Simply amazeballs when the place is so packed. Because it was a Sunday night there was an amazing jazz trio. They started at eight and went through 1030. Not too loud so we couldn't speak but sultry and rich and soulful with joy. 48 hours in Seattle and I was looking for a well-made drink. Needless to say, Zig Zag Cafe was an obvious choice given my very fond memories of it from my last visit over 14 years ago. I got there a little after 5 PM on a Thursday night. Happy hour was in full effect, but after a late lunch, I wasn't looking for food. Similarly, I wasn't interested in happy hour drink specials, but rather was locked in on their regular priced house cocktails ($17). I grabbed a seat at the bar. Frankly, it was like time had stood still as the place looked and felt pretty much the same as it did the last time I was seated at the bar. I started off with the Fireside Manner made with Armagnac, Bigallet China China, Benedictine, and Jerry Thomas Bitters. I favor booze-forward, bittersweet drinks and was intrigued by the use of Armagnac as the base spirit. It was straightforward and excellent! For my next round, I had the John Muir using Michter's Rye, honey, Brucato Chaparral, and Angostura Bitters. I liked this drink even better than my first with its spicier rye on my tongue and the herbaceous note from the Brucato Chaparral which reminded me of Chartreuse. It speaks volumes that any business, especially a restaurant/bar, has survived the pandemic, economic downturns, and the fickle nature of its potential customer base. Zig Zag Cafe blew me away with its outstanding service and well-conceived, expertly-crafted drinks over 14 years ago. It continues to blow me away with those same qualities. The bartender, Elias, was exceptional in making drinks, taking care of his customers, and even offering up sage recommendations on other cocktail spots to enjoy while in town. Seriously, I'll definitely be back...hopefully, it won't take 14 years to make it happen. My strongest recommendation for Zig Zag Cafe as a "must" for cocktail lovers. read more

When they zig we zag, and at Zig Zag Café, everyone is moving in the same direction! Located along Western Avenue by the Pike Street Hillclimb, this spot sits perfectly between Pike Place Market and the waterfront along Alaska Way. Guests are welcomed by smooth music and a lively vibe inside a moodily lit space that opens onto an outdoor patio overlooking the stairwell below. What brought my two friends and me here on a chilly autumn evening was a long workday in downtown Seattle and a shared need to unwind with great drinks, tasty snacks, and a welcoming atmosphere, and Zig Zag Café delivered on all three. This hidden gem was recommended by the one Seattle local in our group, who knew it would be exactly the kind of place we'd enjoy. They were absolutely right. Zig Zag Café was hopping when we arrived well after 10 p.m. on a weeknight evening, as we had to wait to be sat at a table in their outdoor courtyard area, which could be credited to a local baseball game just getting out and many of those revelers enjoying a cocktail here. Luckily there was a large enough table for three that was available for us to sit and put our gear down. The menu at Zig Zag Café is separated into categories including House Drinks, Non-alcoholic Drinks, Wines by the Glass and Bottle, and their Late Night Food and Dessert Menu. For my first drink I ordered their Strawberry Privilege cocktail, which consisted of sparkling wine, strawberry liqueur, Amoro Apero Iberico, Rhum Agricole and soda. A festive cocktail that resembled and tasted like an Aperol Spritz, it was the perfect to begin my cocktail journey at Zig Zag Café. To share, we ordered three dishes from their food menu, including their Popcorn, which was topped with White Cheddar Cheese and Smoked Chili; their Shishito Peppers, which was topped with Tangerine Oil, Pink Peppercorn, and Crispy Garlic, and their Za'atar Hummus, which was a chickpea spread topped with Feta Cheese and Za'atar Spice, served with grilled pita and sliced cucumbers. The popcorn would come out first followed by the peppers and they provided a nice yin and yang to our overall meal when combined with our sweet cocktails. The hummus, pita, and cucumbers provided a nice sustenance for those in our party who were a little famished and in need of replenishment especially after the cocktails. After enjoying a second cocktail, this time their Tropical Dagger, which was a mix of vodka, lime, mango liqueur, aperol, and falernum, we split their S'mores Cheesecake which consisted of a chocolate cheesecake with a graham cracker crust and was topped with a torched marshmallow. More cocktails and lively conversation would follow as thankfully it wouldn't get too cold even as the night wore on, which for Seattle was a nice change of pace. Our total bill would be $180.78, which for six cocktails, two per person, and four shareable food items, does seem on the higher side, as they add in an automatic gratuity of over 22 percent, which is also on the higher side, on top of the tax. We enjoyed ourselves at Zig Zag Café with its nice evening jazzy vibe, solid bite and festive cocktails. I would definitely return one evening again as similar bar and restaurant spaces in the Seattle waterfront area are hard to come by, and with a great atmosphere that Zig Zag Café can provide on a nightly basis, everyone is clearly headed skyward! read more

What it really comes down to for me is expectations being set based on pricing. Let's say I go to a restaurant and the cost of everything is $100 (for the math, not the realism). In Seattle, I know that there's a 10% sales tax so I would be expecting to pay about $130 after tax and tip. under this system, I order my food, the subtotal is $100, I see that I'm being charged a service charge at 21% on $110 which means I'm paying $133.00 and based on the wording of the menu, my server is getting screwed because the business is keeping that money. also, it is pretty fucked up to charge 21% on the after tax amount. Service charges and tip should be on the pre-tax amount, nobody at Seattle City Hall helped the service staff to bus dishes, or to deliver my food. So now I feel like I need to add another $20 which leaves me with $20 less and a negative final experience at the restaurant. I would much rather the menu price reflect the $119.75 pre-tax, which is still $133 with tax before tip. I don't mind spending $150 on food, when I think that's what I was going to be spending. I do mind spending that when the math seems sketchy. I don't like feeling taken advantage of, which is what the policy and the wording of the policy left me feeling at the end of the night. I suggested to the owner is it to just raise your prices to reflect your fixed costs and either get rid of tipping entirely or get rid of the service charge. read more

My husband suggested this place after grabbing dinner downtown as a night cap. We arrived around 8:30 and were seated right away in a booth where both seats face out into the rest of the restaurant. The lighting is really fun and creates a cozy, mysterious atmosphere. I needed help deciding what to order, as every drink had at least one ingredient that was unfamiliar to me. He was able to give really great descriptions of the drinks to help me decide. Ultimately I ordered the unexpected detour and my husband got the long story short. Neither of them tasted how we were expecting, but both were good and the cherry pie a la mode for dessert had a really great crust. This place was a true treasure - our favorite meal in Seattle! We were seated in a tucked away corner on the patio which allowed us to be undisturbed and enjoy catching up. Started the evening with cocktails, shishito peppers and salads, followed by two of the most flavorful pasta dishes. Ok, nice central location. An established reputation to back it up, too. I was eager to go. But they lure you in with a dishonest practice. They keep the prices reasonable, but then slap on a 20%+ "service fee" on your bill (not a fee for large groups... this is on every order). The service fee is said to be retained by the establishment... so what, if any of it, goes to workers, rather than to the proprietor? And what are you supposed to tip, on top of this mysterious surcharge? I think it's disrespectful and dishonest, to hide surcharges somewhere in small characters on the menu, and hope nobody notices on the final bill, especially after a night of fun and having a few! From the outside, it looks like a standard bar/restaurant, but inside, it's got a great vibe with nice ambiance and lighting. The service feels a bit more upscale, and there's an automatic ~23% service charge regardless of party size. We got a couple of Mexican carajillos which were solid. I would genuinely give ZigZag Cafe 0 stars if I could. Summary: Beautiful ambience completely ruined by battery-acid cocktails, cold lasagna, and the most dismissive service I've ever experienced. Now I don't want to immediately get into the bad. The ambience was incredible. The chatter of the restaurant, the jazz music, the sultry lighting all beautifully captured the space. Unfortunately that's about where the positives end. I've seen this place plastered all over social media, but I should have known it was a bad pick when none of the locals had anything to say about it. Things started off a little odd when the host tried to seat us at a table squeezed between two couples despite the restaurant being nearly empty. To her credit she kindly moved us when we looked uncomfortable. Our server greeted us and we ordered cocktails. When they arrived, they tasted like someone had poured straight liquor into a glass and called it a day. I'm all for a strong drink, but this was absurd. I felt like hairs sprouted on my chest and my nostrils were on fire. These were supposed to be cocktails, not shots. We tried to get the server's attention to mention it, but he seemed to avoid our table entirely while checking in with the surrounding tables multiple times. Our appetizers were fine. Nothing special. Then the entrees arrived. I ordered the Artisan Lasagna and when I took the first bite it was cold. Not lukewarm. Actually cold, like it had just come out of the refrigerator. The sauce on top was barely warm but the lasagna itself was cold in the middle. I've genuinely had Stouffer's lasagna that tasted better. My dining partner ordered the risotto which she described as bland and completely lacking flavor. We both took maybe two bites. We tried again to catch the server's eye but it honestly felt like we had become invisible while he continued checking on nearly every other table around us. After waiting about 15 minutes we finally flagged down a server assistant and asked for the check. Our plates were cleared and we were told the server would be right over. Another 15 minutes passed. No server. No check. Meanwhile I watched him visit the surrounding tables multiple times without even glancing our way. When he finally came by, he didn't even stop. He reached over my shoulder, dropped the check in the middle of the table, and while walking away casually mentioned there was auto-gratuity. The bill was nearly $200. For two entrees we barely touched, and drinks we didn't even want to finish. At that point I was already seething. I'm usually someone who just pays and moves on, but I couldn't even bring myself to put my card down. Of course the moment the check was sitting there unopened, the server suddenly reappeared. We tried to explain the issue with the lasagna, but before we could even mention the drinks or the risotto he said he'd remove it, crumpled the receipt in front of us, and walked away in a huff. When he came back with the revised bill he gave what could barely be called an apology for the lasagna... and then laughed. I have never felt so disrespected in a restaurant in my life. The staff knew we were upset when we left because they could barely look me in the eye. Beautiful ambience does not make up for subpar food, rank drinks, and some of the worst service I've ever experienced. Never coming back. And if management happens to read this, do better. read more

Location is a bit tricky to find if you're relying upon Google Maps and the address. When standing in front of Kasala, go down two flights of stairs to find this gem. Intimate lighting inside and a cool outdoor patio. The bar is roomy. Bartender Ricky discussed my drink preferences based upon advice I'd received from a bartending colleague in another location. The result? The Last Word... a cool pre-Prohibition drink resurrected by a bartender right here in Zig Zag. Of course I had to try it! Light, refreshing blend of gin, chartreuse, and lime. Undercooked potatoes and overcooked mustard greens. We ordered Manila clams, lamb loin chop, and the flat iron steak. I have no idea how they managed it, but they burned the broccoli and the broccolini from both entrees while leaving both the scalloped sweet potatoes and roasted potatoes undercooked. EVERYTHING ended up drier than the Sahara desert. Manila clams were good though and the lamb was nicely seasoned...but NOT worth $28 and $39 respectively lol. Murray Stenson was my neighbor for over 15 years and we never talked about mixology. Yeas later when I was of age to drink I was drinking house made falernum and vermouth on the rocks because Murray taught me to savor. I was introduced to the Corps Revivar 2 and Blood and Sand amongst other drinks like Floredita which varied in complexity and mood. Murray would use aquavit and 20 years old rum in his cocktails and other bars were nowhere near Zig Zags. I don't drink anymore but want to leave this amazing review for the appreciators of well made cocktails and none of the trendy stuff. Murray and other bartenders at Zig Zags dedicated time to the craft. It's an art form that is often times lost. From time to time I stop by Zig Zags and the ambiance is sentimental transporting me to a Parisian bistro. The smell of the spirits is poetic and romantic and like the film Midnight in Paris I walk the cobble stoned streets of Pike Place reminiscing of eating carpaccio with truffle oil at Il Bistro, French style fish at Le Pichet and Cafe Campagne. read more

Low lighting, intimate with great music and perfect service! The cocktail menu is admirable and the bartenders on point. I think the only thing I was particularly impressed by was the drinks and drink menu. My partner said his steak was good but the sides weren't good, noting he felt it was the worst potatoes and greens he'd had in a while. He said they were very flavorful and the greens weren't cooked well, making them kinda chewy and stringy/tough. The server was fine but they were pretty busy it seemed. The ambiance was nice before it got a bit more crowded and loud as it got later and more people showed up to mill around at the bar. All the frills of a hot new bar without the pretentiousness a lot of them have. Guess that's why zig zag is considered an oldie but goodie. Food was great. Need to come back here more.
