Walked out a few minutes later after yelling at said employee for literally hitting another dog and yanking it by its leash to hit it further. Long story: I walked into Excelsior looking for a comic book on the way to run some errands. Once I stepped foot into the store I noticed a man sleeping on a recliner, with a dog sitting next to him (a small black and white mixed Chihuahua). The man (employee/manager?) acknowledged me by opening his eyes, and then closed them again to seemingly go back to sleep. After looking at the wall for the specific comic (Captain America Steve Rogers #3), I suddenly heard and then saw another dog barking (a grey and white Chihuahua) behind me. Not bothered by it, but confused why the man wasn't doing anything to stop it, I continued browsing the wall. I turned around in the direction of the dog barking once I heard the man stand up and suddenly grab the dog. Thinking it was more of a gesture to put him in a cage to calm down, I thought nothing of it. I asked him if he had the comic I was looking for and suddenly I heard yelping and the sound of the man smacking the dog. Even worse, the dog had already stopped barking long ago, and the man continued to smack the dog. I began walking in the direction of the man to confirm my suspicions when suddenly I heard a smack and then a snarl from the dog. The man had just gotten bit. He pulled his hand back and went to smack with the other when I called out and asked him, "what's going on". He froze, mumbled something incoherent under his breath, and at that point the first dog that was sitting next to him on the recliner began to bark as well. He lifted his hand and started smacking the dog on the recliner as well. He told me, "He just copies what the other does..." He then told me to pick up his iPhone that had fallen on the floor and hand it to him (a call was coming through). He answered and began mumbling greetings that even I being two feet away could barely understand. At this point I was ready to leave but I was frozen in a state of being uncomfortable and scared for the dogs. I tried talking to the man further, and realized he wasn't even responding to me anymore. I walked out, with no intention to ever return.

Unbeknownst to myself, they had a sale on Aquaman ("You know you love his trident," the billboard outside read), so I ended up grabbing two TPBs. The owner was super friendly and outgoing, telling me how much he personally enjoyed reading one of the volumes I was purchasing. I always try to spot board games when I go into comic book stores -- something this place doesn't have, but it's still a great source for comics in Lake Worth that I'm very excited about. Plus, you gotta love a name like "Excelsior!"

Barely grunted at me when approaching the register and at checkout he rang me up and then asked if I was a subscriber. I said no, and I asked what that was. He said if I pulled books with them I would have received 10% off. Which I would have done! But he asked me AFTER he ran my card. It should be mentioned, the store is very well put together and has great character. They do have a lot of back issues and high end back issues, BUT they are priced well beyond what they should be. Worth a one time trip, but probably only a few times a year beyond that.

AND, it's their storage room so boxes and bins everywhere. - Their selection of games and minis is pretty cool, shelves and shelves full of the things gamers like. * Conversely, their selection pretty much seems like it is stocked by what the staff members like and several requests were met with "I don't know anyone who plays that." Prices are a little higher than most local games stores I've been to and the only things that go on sale are things no one wants to buy, but the staff is friendly and helpful.

As far as a comic store goes, this place pretty much checks off all the boxes you want. They carry…read morecomic books, graphic novels, action figures, artwork, collectibles & the list goes on. They have a huge amount of space inside their store & they utilize every inch. I like how their sections are relatively organized by category, although it can get a bit overwhelming with just how much they have. Everywhere you look there's display cases loaded with figures & bookshelves filled out. They have the best selection of comic books in south Florida, by far. When it comes to quantity & variety they have a great offering. Horror, superheroes, sci-fi, anime; they have some of everything. They keep a nice stock in their weekly release section & carry a lot of sought-after series. While they don't carry every cover variant, they do a good job at having at least a couple for most issues. The workers are usually pretty friendly. They offer help looking for items in their massive store & will point you in the right direction if you have any questions. I've never once had a bad experience in all the years I've been visiting. As good as they are, I have 2 complaints. First off, they're sometimes a bit overpriced. Whether it be an action figure or certain comic, there's been times where I've found them pricing things $2-$15 over market value. While get it's a business, I hate finding something here only to realize I can get it online cheaper. I'm ALWAYS for supporting local businesses but unfortunately it dissuades that. Lastly, sometimes I'll look for a series to start & they'll only have issues #2 & on. While it's not that big of a problem, I always grab issue #1 before any others so this'll cause me to skip out. Usually, however, this doesn't happen often. Overall, Tate's is the place for all your comic & collectible needs. There's not much more to ask for considering their good service, up-to-date selections & large variety. Also, be sure to check out their art gallery upstairs. They carry tons of stickers, prints, originals & crafts from local artists!

I still remember "Old Man Tate" greeting people with that mix of humor, knowledge, and genuine warmth that made you feel like you weren't just walking into a comic shop, you were walking into a community. He was a real gem of a man, an educator in his own right, and the heartbeat of the place. I still miss him. But here's the beauty: his son has carried the mantle and turned Tate's into nothing less than a comic book Mecca. What started as a small neighborhood shop has exploded into what is hands-down the best comic book store in the state of Florida -- and yes, I'd put it up against most in the country too. Don't just take my word for it: Tate's won the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award, basically the Oscar for comic shops. That's how legendary this place is. The store itself is massive, sprawling, and beautifully curated. Comics, graphic novels, manga, collectibles, action figures, statues, vinyl toys, rare finds -- it's like a nerd's cathedral, filled with treasures in every aisle. You could spend hours here and still miss something. The staff? Friendly, helpful, and never gatekeep-y. Whether you're a hardcore collector, a casual reader, or just holiday shopping for that "special geek in your life," they make you feel welcome. When it comes to value, Tate's is unbeatable. Sure, you can buy comics or toys online, but here you get fair prices, expert advice, and the thrill of discovering something new on the shelves. From single-issue comics to high-end collectibles, they strike that perfect balance of competitive pricing and curated quality. The fact that you can walk in with twenty bucks and leave happy -- or drop a couple hundred on a rare statue -- shows the range they cover. It's proof that value isn't just about price; it's about the experience of shopping in a place where every dollar feels well spent. It's also a great spot for holiday shopping. Where else can you grab a signed graphic novel, a rare toy, and a quirky enamel pin all in one place? It's basically Santa's workshop if Santa was obsessed with Batman, Funko Pops, and Gundam models. If I had one wish, it'd be for them to host more events -- comic signings, meetups, gaming nights. That sense of community was always the soul of Tate's, and while the shop is still thriving, those moments made it magical. Tate's Comics is more than a store. It's history, it's family, it's a legacy. Old Man Tate laid the foundation, his son built the empire, and the rest of us are lucky enough to shop there. Come for the comics, stay for the legacy, and leave knowing you just visited a place where heroes don't just live on the page -- they built the shop.

From the outside it doesn't seem too big but you quickly realize how much space they're working with when you step inside. They're filled out wall to wall with comics, collectibles, figures & even have a RPG space set up. I've been to stores that heavily favor one category like super heroes, for example, while leaving all the other genres hanging. PPF however, has one of the best selection of varieties in my opinion. They're loaded with DC, Marvel, TMNT, horror, manga & also carry some niche ones. I also appreciate how they stay up to date on weekly & monthly releases with a section dedicated to them. Prices are solid & they often have a couple limited/exclusive variants. These are a bit overpriced but sometimes it's better to get them in person & support local rather than online & deal with shipping. Years ago, customer service was a bit iffy but recently it's been nothing but great. They greet you right away, have no issues answering questions & act like they appreciate your business. This is a great place to check out if you're a fan of pop culture, comics, figures or books in general. It's really hard to stop by & not leave with something in hand.

The store is…read moreextremely well organize, and clean, but ... unfortunately, my being a loyal customer here was met with rudeness and aggressive behaviors by an employee who has his arm sleeved with many tattoos/ Batman-Nightwing tattoos. I'm not sure if he still works at this location, but if he is...steer clear. This rude and aggressive jerk attempted to blatantly swindle me while I was selling a statue. Before that, he was doing the same with another customer, who was expressing interest in purchasing, a large poster or sign that hung over the check out counter. Needless to say, I ended up severing ties due to his aggressive, and unprofessional behavior. If you see this guy (with the tattoo sleeve, that contains a Batman or a Nightwing, steer clear, or do not frequent this store. He will most likely ruin your experience. I am rating with only 2 Stars due to this location's organization and cleanliness, but this jerk ruined it for me.
