Although the listing says Comic Shop, this place has so much more. It's quite sad there are hardly any independent bookstores in the area, but even more so, used book stores! Back when I lived in West Palm Beach I visited Book Exchange only one time and loved it then. Now, 2 years later a friend and I came in here this last weekend hoping to nab some books for illustration purposes. I'm into art journaling, so I was hoping to find some good vintage children books, and although they had a ton of books, the selection wasn't as good as I had hoped. Although, they did have a circus book I wanted however it was a little too pricey for a children's book so I passed. But not all hope was lost - I was able to find 2 books from the 70s featuring really great illustrations of flowers and birds which will definitely come in handy. Although you could probably find some of the same books online, I personally don't think it's the same as digging through their shelves, squeezing through the narrow isles, and ultimately plopping down on the floor to thumb through a stack of good finds. Book Exchange is definitely a gem in the North Palm Beach area. If you're ever in town I'd say it's worth taking a trip to because there aren't many other places like it down in the tri-county area (at least that I know of).

Service wasn't overly friendly but I scored on my Pinterest "To Be Read" board as many of these books were hard to find yet find them I did! Rows upon rows of books to peruse. In alphabetical order. Do not ask if they have them in a compute system... THEY DON'T and give yourself ample time to look as books were not always in the right spot but I would say 97% of the time they were. Respectfully Reviewed

Ask the Community - Book Exchange & Comic Shop

Does this store buy used books?

If we think we can resell them then yes we can. The amount will be very low so you may prefer store credit towards other books.

Can I bring in various hardcover books?

Yes. If we can use them we give you a bit of credit, usually one dollar, off other used books. Also paperbacks.

Barely grunted at me when approaching the register and at checkout he rang me up and then asked if I was a subscriber. I said no, and I asked what that was. He said if I pulled books with them I would have received 10% off. Which I would have done! But he asked me AFTER he ran my card. It should be mentioned, the store is very well put together and has great character. They do have a lot of back issues and high end back issues, BUT they are priced well beyond what they should be. Worth a one time trip, but probably only a few times a year beyond that.

Walked out a few minutes later after yelling at said employee for literally hitting another dog and yanking it by its leash to hit it further. Long story: I walked into Excelsior looking for a comic book on the way to run some errands. Once I stepped foot into the store I noticed a man sleeping on a recliner, with a dog sitting next to him (a small black and white mixed Chihuahua). The man (employee/manager?) acknowledged me by opening his eyes, and then closed them again to seemingly go back to sleep. After looking at the wall for the specific comic (Captain America Steve Rogers #3), I suddenly heard and then saw another dog barking (a grey and white Chihuahua) behind me. Not bothered by it, but confused why the man wasn't doing anything to stop it, I continued browsing the wall. I turned around in the direction of the dog barking once I heard the man stand up and suddenly grab the dog. Thinking it was more of a gesture to put him in a cage to calm down, I thought nothing of it. I asked him if he had the comic I was looking for and suddenly I heard yelping and the sound of the man smacking the dog. Even worse, the dog had already stopped barking long ago, and the man continued to smack the dog. I began walking in the direction of the man to confirm my suspicions when suddenly I heard a smack and then a snarl from the dog. The man had just gotten bit. He pulled his hand back and went to smack with the other when I called out and asked him, "what's going on". He froze, mumbled something incoherent under his breath, and at that point the first dog that was sitting next to him on the recliner began to bark as well. He lifted his hand and started smacking the dog on the recliner as well. He told me, "He just copies what the other does..." He then told me to pick up his iPhone that had fallen on the floor and hand it to him (a call was coming through). He answered and began mumbling greetings that even I being two feet away could barely understand. At this point I was ready to leave but I was frozen in a state of being uncomfortable and scared for the dogs. I tried talking to the man further, and realized he wasn't even responding to me anymore. I walked out, with no intention to ever return.

Unbeknownst to myself, they had a sale on Aquaman ("You know you love his trident," the billboard outside read), so I ended up grabbing two TPBs. The owner was super friendly and outgoing, telling me how much he personally enjoyed reading one of the volumes I was purchasing. I always try to spot board games when I go into comic book stores -- something this place doesn't have, but it's still a great source for comics in Lake Worth that I'm very excited about. Plus, you gotta love a name like "Excelsior!"
