Tiny space - well appointed with exposed brick, rugged wood finishes, and hipster-lite baristas - it's a solid option for pour over. Like all caffeine havens that take themselves seriously, Revolver has but a few options - lattes, pour over, (+ Clover, upon request), macchiatos, maybe a cappuccino - I think that's it - so in short, leave your 11y/o cousin who's jonesing for a double caramel mocha frappe at the Starbucks nearby - and dive into their rotating menu of beans - the day we stopped in, the options were beans roasted in SF (Ritual), Brooklyn, Vancouver, Nova Scotia, or Portland - all of which were originally found in far off lands such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Bolivia, and The Congo. Prices range from $3.5-4.5 for pour over (depending on the bean), and the specialty drinks are probably in the upper $4s - in short, it's not poor man's coffee - nor does it pretend to be - like, they offer effing flights of coffee - clearly, Revolver is trying to imbue the humble vehicle for my morning buzz into something REAL - and after years in Berkeley + being a coffee addict, I'm in - the only neg is that they don't really describe the beans you choose, other than to note the location. The pot I got was too fruity for my taste - thank goodness they had soy and almond milk gratis so my lactard tum (and tastebuds) were happy. Don't go if you're pressed for time or a little claustrophobic - it can get tight. Do go if you happen to like being snobby abt your morning brew and have patience for perfection - oh, and as it was 9a, I didn't hit their bitchin' looking cookies, but they certainly looked worth the splurge. read more

So I said to the DJ thats spinning cool retro vinyl tunes off an 25yr old turn table... Give me one of those Espresso Macchiatos thats hittin the news stand... Back when I went to school up the road, this building used to be some creepy shop where burnouts sat around and carved wood. (Pretty sure it was a front for dealing, but what the hell would I know?!) Suddenly, out of nowhere, a coffee shop blooms where cappuccinos are served in glass mugs! Black and white exterior and dope interior with an adjacent coffee room/lounge and shop next door. Ridiculoussss. My BF is so into the coffee thang right now so this was on top of our list of places to go. They have chemex's for sale here and also a bunch of beans from top roasters. Since I can't drink coffee, I opted for simple green tea and wasn't let down at all. They have seating in both of their spots. The only difference is one is much louder than the other. There's so many different types of cafe experiences to be had here in Vancouver and @beandar is recommending that you make Revolver one of them! My visit wasn't just about drinking coffee, it was more of an overall experience and an educational one at that. I'm a bit on the obsessed side of coffee (no, really?) So I asked a lot of questions because I felt these guys are somewhat of an authority on the subject. I was seriously impressed with their Informative, in depth knowledge about the coffees they serve, and on how they prepare them. So many fun implements! The cafe is tight, and we were lucky to get a seat on such a busy day, in fact there was a line up which is something I've personally seldom seen on a weekend at a cafe. We sat in a booth with our out of town guest and enjoyed the ambiance. I had a great time. I love the interior and how everything is set up including the antique filing cabinet at the back which houses the sugars, spoons, and other accouterments. OMG Looking around in there I couldn't help observing how much thought went into all the details that makes this a really unique coffee experience in Vancouver. There are 5 or 6 good cafes around Gastown that are worth checking out but seriously, don't miss Revolver. read more

As an admitted coffee-bar-snob, few coffee bars satisfy me with their menu, their style, their efficiency, or their coffee options. Vancouver has been a bit disappointing for some time - so much sameness and a general lack of engagement (on par with what you can get in LA, SF and Portland). Finally Vancouver has its spot! Designed by baristas, who exude passion for coffees and their craft. Revolver is not your typical coffee bar. There are no ceramic cups, no menu with a long list of beverages and sizes. The customer interaction does not center around "here/take away" "12 or 16 oz" or "what type of milk?" The focus here is on the coffee, and the brew method. Pour over? Aeropress? French press? Espresso? The answer is always "yes." Multiple coffee options from multiple boutique roasters. All of it in season, and roasted within the past few days. If you're interested in exploring specialty coffee as a culinarian, or as a consumer, or as a design or craftsperson, then Revolver Coffee is your spot. Its about the ongoing exploration of coffee. The coffee was great, similar in taste and consistency as other notable cafes in the Vancouver area. Prices are competitive as well. I just hated the urban hipster vibe. Of all cafes I've been to in my short life so far, this was easily the most pretentious crowd. I actually felt deeply uncomfortable as I entered the door. I don't know if I would go back again just because of the attitudes. The staff are nice; just the customers are kinda... idk. I've been thoroughly intrigued/confused/overwhelmed by pour over coffee so that's what we went for. They actually poured it for us into pots, which we then poured into little glass cups. The result was a luscious, rich, and flavourful coffee without any bitterness. I don't think I've ever been so happy with a cup of coffee before (apologies to my lovely date). 4.5 stars Awesome find in Gastown! The street was shut down when we went.. but found out they were setting up for a TV show which was pretty cool to see. Luckily Revolver was still open...and packed. I'm always on the search for unique and traditional (maybe even trendy?) coffee shops whenever i visit a new city. This place definitely fit the bill. The interior design is industrial like many coffee houses. I'm simple and order a pour over... i think it was their feature bean, Sumatra? They use scales to get accurate pours and retain consistent brews. My coffee was delicious. My group also ordered 2 teas, which were a big miss. At $4 a cup, they didn't steep the tea that long (they use timers) and then poured over ice, which diluted it even more. At the end, it tasted like lightly flavored water with hints of floral. The space is divided in two. Coffee making side with tables, and the other side which looked to be retail and more communal seating. Pretty spacious and designed well. read more

I was super stoked to try this place because they've got flights for COFFEE. Which is awesome. There's two kinds of flights: Tasting and Brew. Tasting is 3 different kinds of coffee brewed the same way and Brew is the SAME coffee brewed 3 different ways (Aeropress, French Press, Clever). They've also got a great selection of coffee from Portland, San Francisco, Victoria BC. My friend and shared our tasting/brew flights and they were all pretty good. I stuck with beans from Ethiopia for my tasting flight and was thorough surprised how different they all tasting. It's recommended to guess which one is which after tasting and sadly, I got them all wrong :( My friend's brew flight was a really enlightening experience. I really enjoyed the Aeropress method over French Press and Clever. Revolver is a really nice place to chill and hangout in the afternoon (if you can find a seat!) Patrons tend to stay long so try to politely ask them to move along so you can sit and sip. read more

Given our hopeless addiction to coffee and coffee paraphernalia, we were on an exploration in Vancouver to find some good Java! (there's really only so much Starbucks I can handle...I never used to be like when I live in NYC...) I was given a magazine in a tea shop one day and as I was reading, it had a great article about Revolver-a super evolved coffee bar that specializes in the art of drip coffee. And given the naissance of individual coffee brewing that has finally reached our shores in the U.S., we couldn't ignore the opportunity to enjoy what Canada has to offer us! To begin, We were in love with this shop! Located on the corner of brick building in Gastown, this store had an awesome feel and ambience that exuded the rich aroma of ground coffee, with images of sipping a cup on a cloudy day starring outside through the large panes of glass watching people walk by, contemplating their next moves... Now, we're talking, serious coffee for the serious coffee lover without all the pretentious bull that usually comes with an emerging, artisanal, culinary craft. Revolver has all the craft, with none of the hoopla. I love the interior, the exposed brick wall behind the bar, the handcrafted wooden counter with open counter shelving and exposed plumbing to row of chemex carafes aligned in perfect synchronicity, everything is designed and well ordered in a warm, rustic ambience. We had had our Chemex brew before, (so close to getting one for our house, along with beans to roast at home!) and wanted to try something new, so for our single brew, the Aeropress was the choice: A laboratory experiment involving coffee grounds, Hot water and large syringe-like press that involves a flip and push! It was fun to watch (what with a little bit of danger) but the end result is an aromatic, robust press of caffeine goodness! What we found was that there was a robust full body flavor without the bitterness that come with a strong brew. It was actively mild, yet a lot the fruit flavors were bold enough to leave an aftertaste in the tongue. And at the end, we were wired to satisfaction, and buzzed out like little bees, off to our next adventure! Located on Cambie Street across from Meat and Bread, the Giannakos brothers from Café Crema in West Vancouver, brings you a sexy coffee house focusing on a seasonal coffee menu from roasters around the world. The menu is simple, minimalistic with about ten items only focusing on coffee. The idea is not to distract you with fancy pastries to conceal the brew. Décor is minimalistic with an simple down to earth vibe of open kitchen / open bar concept and wooden bench seats along with counter seats right by the window. The transparency design of enjoying your individually brewed coffee on the bar top in a laboratory type bar. There is a rustic vintage vibe to the whole environment - exposed plumping, brick walls, reclaimed wood, and an old school record player. The way music used to play. Chris and John Giannakos brings you the ultimate coffee experiences with Siphon, Aeropress, Chemex. Espresso. Their flight brew woos you seductively because you are engaged in somewhat of a blind tasting. Why be limited of where the coffee beans come in determining what your palate prefers? There is a certain madness that comes to the formulation of the brew - timers, ratios, scales. I have so much more to learn. It's somewhat hard to give you a review of their coffee because the coffee that you enjoy today may not be offered the following week. Keeps you on your toes, sorta. But to tell you, the three brews tested were somewhat acidic and a tad too juicy and complex for me. I prefer the earthy herbal textures, even a little nuttiness would be ideal. Then again this is just personal preferences. This summer they've packaged their freshly branded brewed in-house Cold Brew for summer in a quintessentially attractive travelling size flask bottle. My friend told about this place and mentioned that their lattes were good. He insisted that I should give it a try one day so I went with my bf on a Thursday. We came at a good time because apparently this place gets super busy but there was no line up when we got there and we were able to find a booth! This place was super cool because they had two areas to chill but there was a wall that separated the two rooms so you would have to walk outside to get to the other side. The decor was also very cool. They had so many different kinds of brewed coffees to choose from and they were quite expensive at around $4.50-$4.75 but I had to give it a try. I ordered one that had flavors of jasmine, blackberry and ginger in it which was very good and they served it in a small pot so I can self pour when I wanted more. My bf had their cappuccino with soy milk which was very strong but tasty. We also shared a raspberry coffee cake which was huge! The coffee cake was so delicious! It was crumbly, and it had a good balance of sweet and tangy. It tasted so good with our coffees. Overall, we would definitely come back here. I really am looking forward to try their other special brewed coffees and to see what other baked goods they have. read more

My go-to drink is the macchiato which is always made perfectly with the silkiest foam. I really love how they take care in making their coffee. I really sincerely hope Im the only one getting this flat tasting lack-of-crema americanos because i dont know how this place is a 4.5/5.... So so so so so so (I can't emphasise the 'so' enough) cool! Walking in to revolver I was amazed by the number of coffee creating contraptions on display. The menu doesn't offer all of the fancy flavour added coffees and teas that many others do, but one look at the baristas at work tells you that the few items they do, they make sure they do well. These dudes are in to it. Big time. The result is, of course, a magnificent, fantastic, rave-about-it-for-eight-blocks cup of coffee. They also have some pretty bangin baked goods. The chocolate cake was moist and delicious without being too heavy. While a cup of joe prices out at more than average, and the process takes a little while, it's 100% worth it! read more

Great tourist attraction and yupster magnet. Wow... what a popular place. It's a tourist attraction, where people from all over come to get a taste of Gastown culture. It's so popular and touristy, that the place is jam-packed with a mixture of locals wanting to be, and be seen as, cool, and tourists coming to experience the circus. The business is well executed, they have a very strong brand, and a good product. The service was passable, but that's to be expected when you have a line out the door at all times. I'd met my caffeine quota for the day, so tea was ordered, which met expectations. I was able to snipe a booth for myself, got the wifi password, put my headphones on, and worked online while taking people-watching brakes. People watching at Revolver is as good as it gets. Yupsters abound (I learned that word recently: mixture of yuppie and hipster), all looking as cools as they can in their hyper expensive gear that's mean to look inexpensive. Tourists come here and take pictures of the business and local clientele, and get a drink as well. This place was so cool, that it did not believe in providing power to customers. But they can't be blamed for this, and it's even a good business decision, given their popularity and need to turn around clients. So... I used up my power, got things done, enjoyed the scenery, and moved on. Conclusion: Revolver is a great business, they have an interesting brand and product, and it attracts a lot of people from different walks of life. That being said, this is not a good coffee shop if you're looking to get stuff done, or even meet up with friends. Now, I'm no coffee snob. Heck, when I first started drinking, it was with loads of creme and sugar. Probably more creme and sugar than there is coffee. If you couldn't tell, I really couldn't stand taking coffee black. So let that put things in perspective when I describe the Heart something Coffee Portland. I actually don't remember what the something was, but there was a word there in between heart and coffee I think. It was brewed in a drip filter thingy into a glass thingy. Then they give that to you and a little cup so you can drink it. The coffee itself wasn't pitch black, but was more of a warm transparentish brown color. Then I sipped it and it wasn't bitter. Went here to grab some caffeine after eating across the street at Meat and Bread with my mom. Cool little place, trendy - hip is what I would like to comment. I had a caffe latte, mom had a regular coffee. Since mom was tired, we decided to sit down after we ordered, then we realized we had no idea where our drinks would end up. After a few minutes, I noticed this finished my latte. It was very good, no bitter after taste. My only complaint was it could have been hotter. After waiting quite a while for my mom's coffee, we noticed a coffee maker pouring hot water into a filter at the counter. I got up to check and yup it was for my mom. Hmmm I had a bad feeling, because the water was being poured by hand into a filter sitting above a flask, I didn't think it was stay that hot. They served a small glass cup with a larger coffee dispenser. My mom looked at it and thought what do I do with that? She went over to the condiments station and made her coffee---in the small cup, came back drank it, went back to make another cup. I know it sounds silly, but I guess for an elderly lady, it didn't occur to her to make it in the dispenser! Anyway, I asked her how her coffee was, she replied pretty good, but not hot enough. They claim their coffee is the best in the city, OK, it's pretty good. But is it the best because people think this place is cool or they like the presentation? Also, the amount of time difference for me to get my Latte and my mom to get a lukewarm coffee seemed to be too long. I know they are brewing a coffee from scratch, but we didn't enjoy our coffee together. I had to wait from her to get and finish her coffee. If I'm in the area I might get a coffee here, but I won't go out of my way to have a cup here. read more

Such mixed feelings. Loved the decor, loved the offerings, loved the idea, but it fell short on quality. Found the cappuccino to be pretty tasty. VERY wet. Oddly my machiatto tasted of less espresso than the capp. It wasn't "marked" so much as mixed 50/50. In a place like this, that's seems to have their head in the game, I expect proper proportions of milk/cream/what have you, not just the "top it off" mentality that drives us on these adventures to find the perfect cup in the first place. Taking our beverages to go, we didn't have firsthand experience with the glasses others are mentioning, but we've seen them popping up all over the place, mostly for lattes, but I agree, it is such a silly thing. Yes we realize you want your coffee to LOOK cool, but make it TASTE awesome and people won't care what it comes in. I absolutely adore Revolver and am always looking forward to a visit here. The lattes and cappuccinos are excellent and it's fascinating watching the baristas do their thing with all the neat gadgets. It's tough getting a seat sometimes, but definitely worth it for the ambience. Excellent people watching in a bustling, lively and welcoming spot. The wifi is great and the service is attentive. They noticed when I had finished my latte, where I was sitting and brought my tea right to me. The tea also comes in an adorable little glass teapot that you can pour yourself.
