This restaurant is for people with more money than sense. If you enjoy fine dining, head down to…read moreMilwaukee or Chicago. The Immigrant taught me the expensive lesson that the middle of Wisconsin is for supper clubs and cheese curds. I've never walked out in the middle of a meal before, so thank you for providing that story to me. My wife and I booked a reservation on New Years Eve. They had a very expensive prix fixe menu, which I'd expect from a fine dining restaurant. I have no issues with a restaurant charging hundreds of dollars per person for a meal like this. But I do expect the service and food to be fantastic, which it was far from. -It took over a half an hour for us to get water at our table. Our drink orders were finally taken after that. -Our waiter went on and on about how the restaurant has been nominated for 12 James Beard awards and won 3. THIS IS NOT TRUE. As far as I can tell, the current chef has won a single James Beard award years ago at a different restaurant. None of the previous head chefs have, and the restaurant itself hasn't. -Also, a waiter telling you about all the awards the restaurant has won is the tackiest thing in the world. I'd expect better from a fine dining restaurant. After every course he was basically telling us that the food was SO GREAT. It was obnoxious. -The menu was set for 9 courses. After 2 hours, we had only received 5 of the courses, most of which were so so so gross. We were starving and left. -One course was a fingerling sweet potato, cooked, cut in half, with fish roe on top, and a smelly piece of seaweed as garnish/decoration. That's it. Or at least, that's what it tasted like. If they did anything else to it, I wouldn't know. What was the point of that dish? -Another was foie gras with caramelized white chocolate. How do those flavors go together AT ALL? Why would you serve them as one of the first two courses? And that white chocolate wasn't caramelized, so why did you say it was? -At one point we were served bread with a side of butter that had chopped up seaweed in it. What's the obsession with seaweed? It ruined that butter. Who wants the gross taste of fishy salt with their bread? - Raw scallops with cold horseradish sauce and dill. It tastes like it sounds. Listen, I'm no stranger to fine dining. We expected the food to be edible, the service to be prompt, and the experience to be positive. The Immigrant failed on all fronts, ultimately leading to us ending our stay at The American Inn. But I guess the ambience had a certain charm to it. One star.

There is also a wine area in the front where you can get drinks before or after the meal. Decor is very cool as well. There is free parking underneath the hotel.

We had made reservations so I'm not sure if one can just simply walk up and hit the button to get in for a table. The speakeasy itself is intimate, with dimmed lighting and limited seating. The table we were at was quite small so wouldn't accommodate much more than our drinks, the candle and perhaps if you wanted to reach over for your date's hand. The drink menu isn't your basic drink menu so be prepared for creative concoctions, with ingredients and spirits blended to perfection and served up in a beautiful glass. Our server was friendly and our drinks came quickly. Prices are a little above average but you're paying for the experience as well as the quality of the drink you're not getting everywhere else. The experience was memorable and a place I'd be happy to return to again for a lovely evening.

We ordered a couple cocktails and they were interesting, but not the best I've ever had. They felt like they'd been created to focus on being unique, rather than on winning flavor combinations. Sadly, our server was also distracted and kind of awkward, chasing us out into the courtyard to secure a credit card as if we were going to drink and ditch. His manner did not add to the overall experience. I've been meaning to try this place forever and now I can cross it off my list and move onward to better drinks and service

Love the little details in the wood moldings and floors and stained glass and that they've kept the "vintage" looks of this older building that contribute to an atmosphere of uniqueness. Most places are rushing to modernize and make everything look simple and cookie cutter, its beautiful to spend time in a place that embraces the history they're working with instead of stripping it down. Not a lot of bathrooms/stalls in it, but it was very clean and well kept up. The bar area is a bit cramped and narrow, but it's history as a discrete speakeasy in an now alcohol heavy town makes it seem charming. My friends and I have had a great time here for concerts and birthday/anniversary parties and excited to go back for more. *Steep flight of stairs to get up there though with no elevators so maybe not ADA compliant

I had heard about the Tin Widow's holiday pop up being one of the best area, the hype was not wrong. From the entrance to the ceiling and walks, this place is the definition of deck the halls. Unless you get here right when they open it early in the holiday season, I would expect a crowd. The drink menu is so fun with holiday themed drinks served in matching glassware. You can even purchase the glass/mug for an additional fee. A lot of the cocktails looked to be batched cocktails which help with the bartender's efficiency. Highly recommend making this place a holiday stop. I'm also curious to stop in after the holidays to experience it without all the holiday decor.

They had several seasonal cocktails in special festive cups, which you could also buy to take home. I got the Cheery Cherry Chocosaurus, which was good, but pricey for what it was. Almost all the seasonal drinks were $15 each and didn't seem too big. The venue itself is medium sized, but feels crammed quickly. There's more people let in at a time than there is seating, so you have to move fast to get a seat. I'll likely come back during the summer to try something else.

We got lucky and had bar seats open up after about 5 minutes which allowed us to grab cocktails and relax. After a bit we ordered some Brussel sprouts as an appetitizer and before they could show up our table opened up. My wife chose the 2 piece cod fry with chips while I opted for the perch fry with fries. Everything was spectacular. The bartenders were jumping around each other to keep people happy at the bar and the rest of the staff get people's bellies filled with food. If you go keep in mind there are no reservations and will probably be a wait, but they will take great care of you and serve you some awesome fish!

I surprisingly don't have many options in my "MKE - Fish Fry" collection that are near downtown, but Swinging Door Exchange was one of them. I was pressed for time, so I placed a to go order rather than dining in. I got the combo fish fry (two pieces of cod, two pieces of perch, and three fried shrimp) with potato pancakes. I was also very easily talked into the half rack rib appetizer. The ribs were good, even though I prefer sauce that's more sweet and smokey. Their sauce was on the tangy side with a tease of spice that really only became noticeable when the majority of the half rack was gone. If I were in the mood for ribs as my main meal, I'd consider getting theirs as an entree. The two potato pancakes weren't homemade; instead, they were premade hash brown patties that some other restaurants also serve with their fish frys. These were perfectly acceptable in lieu of homemade pancakes. The cod tasted great, but the breading didn't hold up very well. Either the fish itself was too wet or the two block walk back to my car allowed for condensation to wreck it or possibly both. The perch was not yellow lake perch but probably something like pike perch. Even though both kinds of fish and the shrimp were all good sized portions, $29 feels like a lot. I wouldn't say no to it, though, if I were dining in next time and avoid the extra cost of their takeout fee. Shout-out to the bartenders working that night. The bar area was absolutely packed, but both of the ones I talked to about placing my order were friendly and helpful even with being super busy.
