He offered me a release of liability and offered me a tax-deductible receipt for the 501(c) 3 he runs. Most importantly I can feel good that my parents' items will find their way into the hands of folks who could really benefit from them. I am glad that I can avoid paying storage fees to retain items I don't need while being confident that they will end up in a network of folks who could really use them. Problems solved.
