I think Reyes Market is Carpinteria's hidden treasure. From the outside, this little market may trick the average tourist. But inside, I think it has the best carne asada tacos in Carpinteria. there small street tacos with cut up fresh onions and cilantro. It also has great hot sauce. Absolutely a terrible experience - I will not be back there, ever. They have a nice patio out front and my buddy who lives in the area said that they have beer, so I thought "let's have a cold one real quick and then keep moving" ... oh life, if only you were that simple and nice ... I walked in and politely asked if we could buy beers and drink them on the patio out front ... I was met with confusion and hostility. God forbid someone just wants beer, not your crappy food - it was like they were dumbfounded by this concept. Now, I understand that people are dumb and they don't understand what the hell you're saying (and immediately think that you're trying to scam the business somehow) ... so I slowly re-asked "Can I purchase beer (that you sell literally 5 feet from where we are standing) and drink it outside on the patio?" They still seemed confused and hostile but finally got it through their thick skulls and said, "Yes you can". I go get the sacred beer, return to the counter and the lady says "Oh, you have to order food if you want to drink a beer here" - again like I'm trying to scam the place somehow. I said, "Okay then I'll have 2 chicken tacos". Acting surprised (like her tactics failed to scare off the paying customer) she said "Oh, and we have to pour the beer into these giant paper cups". I said "Okay, fine, whatever", hoping to get it over with and get a sip of beer past my lips sometime this century. She takes the order for the 2 chicken tacos, which were terrible by the way, and I sit there waiting for the sacred beer to be handed over. All told it was $16.22! That's right $16.22 for two terrible chicken soft tacos and two tall boys (24 oz.) - the beers were $3 each (yes they were marked) so somehow these two terrible little tacos were $5 each! I know that I got the "shaft" prices or someone made a mistake because I confused and annoyed them with all my "crazy questions" and "outrageous requests" but this was just a joke! My buddy said that I should have just bought two beers, said nothing, and started drinking them as we planned (because there were no signs anywhere). He was certainly correct, but I tried to do the right thing and ask what the rules were ... BIG mistake. All I got was confusion, annoyance, and hostility, and some crappy tacos for $10. I didn't leave a tip (none) and I'll never be back ... just a terrible experience at a poorly run business all-around. read more

As far as tacos and burritos go in Carp, this is the gold standard. Only a few tables inside and out but high on integrity and excellent ingredients cooked right. Excellent salsa bar with all the basics, radishes, limes, cilantro, shredded cabbage, onions, and good jalapenos en escabeche. Had an excellent chile rellano burrito with pork verde. This is one, or quite simply, the best I have had! Located in Carpinteria this was a quick stop while traveling back to Saint Babs--a pleasant surprise and certainly already discovered by the locals. Very friendly staff and a great place to get fairly inexpensive mexican food. The other item ordered was a breakfast burrito that was quite generous with the bacon as well. I did not taste it but was told it too was delish. This place is a market with a Mexican restaurant stand located towards the back of the store. Their is seating/outdoor seating. The market is very clean with a nice selection of market items that one generally expects to find--but the Mexican restaurant is really a gem! Will gladly go back when traveling to or through Carp. There is an English menus available in paper format on the counter. Hubby and I ordered pork/cactus (don't remember the Spanish) burritos. Not something I would usually order, but it was very good. They have (limited) outdoor and indoor seating, and just a tip, the waitress brings a bottle of the salsa with your order, so you don't have to bother with those plastic cups, unless you want the pico. read more

Hard to decide on the best thing about Reyes Market ... but "salsa bar" comes to mind first. I buy it by the pint. Then, the breakfast burritos are great, be sure to ask for the bacon to be "crispy." I ordered the chile relleno burrito, and a chicken as well as a beef tostada. The chile relleno burrito was tasty but I've had better. Reyes has the best burritos on the planet. There's no doubt in my mind. Get the chile relleno burrito. You won't be bummed. But you've already gathered that from the many reviews. What hasn't gotten a lot of mentions in their catering. I've been coming to Reyes for the last twenty years, but I'd never experienced their catering. That changed a few months ago. What a happy change. Sal was able to write us up a great order to feed 30 people within our budget. We got asada, chicken, carnitas as our meats and dozens of their wonderful tortillas for a little taco bar. Of course, cilantro, onions, and salsas were included. We also got a large helping of their homemade chips and guacamole. Our guests were not upset. Only thing missing were their delicious tamales, which apparently are only done around holidays. We used to go to the other R shop on Linden for our Christmas tamales. Once I learned Reyes did tamales for Christmas, I had to jump ship. One word: Gordito! Get it now! Its awesome. I got the Pastor Gordita and it was food heaven. Its a sandwich, but instead of bread, it its 2 thick, fried corn tortillas, crunchy and browned on the outside, and soft and doughy in the middle. Then you have re fried beans and crumbled queso fresca, and a little lettuce for good measure. Then you have your meat and a tomato, and a healthy dousing of their red hot sauce, and on goes the other corn tortilla. Hungry yet? Friendly service, and the food is worth the wait. Call ahead if you are impatient. The fish tacos are super yummy, there is something unique about their corn tortillas, I just can't desribe it. We have been eating at Reyes Market for about 10 years when we come to Carpinteria about once a month. Sal and his staff do a great job of cooking "real" Mexican food.
