I've been here several times before and finally decided to stop after my last haircut with Maria. Noriko, who has been my stylist before had been doing a great job but she wasn't available on Sunday which is why Maria was recommended to me. Maria gave me a cut that was so uneven in the back that it made me look like I had bald spots... She didn't show me what the finished cut looked like at the end of the session (back of my head with a mirror) so I didn't even know that I looked ridiculous until I got home. The thought that I even tipped her for making such mistake pisses me off. When I confronted the stylist with a photo, she said it was bc I had uneven amount of hair on the back of my head. I've been going to this salon on and off for the past 4 years. This salon was initially recommended to me by a friend from Tokyo. She said the pricing is good. However the service and the cuts you get reflect the price. From the interior alone, this place seems chic. This isn't a busy salon. Every time I'm there, there's barely anyone. Like 1 or 2 other people. I don't need a fancy interior in order to get a haircut. What has always disturbed me is how after you get your haircut the stylist waits for you outside to collect your tip. They are the only salon that does this! Like what, to guilt you out of a tip? Tips reflect the service and the quality of cut you get. Just frustrated with their lack of service over the years. I've ran late and they cancelled my appointment. Made me reschedule. What the hell. You barely have clientele to begin with! I can see why. I'm not a new customer. So what I'm 15-20 minutes late. Other salons are too busy and delay you for that long, so you don't feel rushed. If you don't know or remember who you've styled your hair with, they hook you up with whomever. I once had a man who worked there who wrecked my hair. Like my hair looked so bad. Like Chinatown $20 hair cuts bad, except I paid their price. So they hooked me up with a new stylist named Yuki. I've never liked her cuts. She trims bangs nicely but always gives me the same damn haircuts every single time. I'm sorry if it's my fault but I felt tricked by this salon. I have shorter hair and they insist I come frequently like almost once a month... You know that feeling. You spent money, and with tip it all adds up, compounded with the frequency they expect of you.... and you are left unhappy with your hair. I never wanted the heavy bangs, the razor shaved in the back and another bob. Did they ask me what I wanted? Or were they more interested in profiting off of me for bob haircuts? Also I always felt guilted, like I'm expected to stick with the same damn stylist. I don't know who's really that good but I don't like the way they have treated an old clientele. ...I don't need my stylist to make me tea while I'm getting my hair cut. I had a great experience with Noriko. I haven't had a haircut in over a year and I was long overdue for a haircut. She finished delicately shampooing my hair, thinned out my thick Japanese hair to half its volume, shortened my hair from belly button length to the desired shoulder length, and gave me a red carpet Hollywood blowout & glamorous bangs all within the hour. Two stars because the service was very nice and the salon clean and the cuts very decently priced for Manhattan, but would give only one star for what a bad butcher hair job I had on my hair. Hachi, the owner of the salon, cut my hair on the recommendation of my Asian friends, who love him but all have straight hair. They said, Hachi is Asian and has wavy hair himself, so maybe he will do a good job on yours. Au Contraire Mon Freur. Stay away if you have any texture in your hair - his ideas about wavy hair are outdated. He'll do a old school one-size-fits-all straight cut on your hair no matter what kind of hair you've got. It's definitely a case of 'he's very good at what he does, but what he does isn't that good, if you've got wavy hair. If I hadn't been already in the middle of a cut, I would have turned and RUN away. He said I had 8 different textures in my hair, recommended that I get a PERM to even all the textures out to straight.Then he pulled out two kinds of THINNING shears and hacked away. So, all the body of curls was cut away and I was just left with frizzy, thinned hair. It's taken one year for most of the damage to grow out, and I grow hair very fast. read more

This place, when it opened, used to be good. The space is impressive, and the receptionist is lovely. But I must say they have declined significantly in the last year or so--in their service and skills. Some of the good stylists have left, and stylists you get are basically hit or miss. I once got this guy who was not only unskilled but also VERY unpleasant, which is unusual in a Japanese salon. That's when I decided to move on to another salon. So I'm dying for a haircut and I'm new to the city. I look to Yelp for a place near my new home in Brooklyn Heights, but nothing is seeming too promising. I figure I'll just check out a salon near the job in midtown. Being cheap/frugal as I am, I had to talk myself out of going to the Supercuts.... but now I'm thinking I would have been better off. I set an appointment via phone with the receptionist at RH+ after checking out their good looking albeit slow website and show up pretty much on time. I am ushered into a little changing booth where I hang up my coat and suit jacket and put on a little robe over my shirt. I am impressed by the space and the kindness of the staff. I receive a bomb ass hair-washing from Takashi, who scrubs my head with the vigor of an angry Catholic nun, leaving me a little breathless but happy (hey, I like it rough). I brought in two pictures for my hair stylist to reference - both are collarbone length haircuts with a little side fringe that resembles Lisa Loeb. The stylist begins. Without my glasses on, I am legally blind. However, with glasses off, this haircut was looking amazing. I was loving the shape of the fringe on my forehead. I was, perhaps, so mesmerized, that I neglected to check in on what was happening with the rest of my hair. I feel like a LOT of hair is coming off, but for some reason. I feel like this guy should be trusted. The moment of truth: the glasses are handed to me and I feel excitement. Am I going to look as awesome as Lisa Loeb or am I going to look even awesomer?? NEITHER. I have a Taylor Momsen mullet and it is SO BEYOND unflattering... I have super fine hair that is pretty much lifeless anyway, but now, with SO MUCH HAIR GONE because of the EXCESSIVE layering, it is completely flat. I went home, tears in my eyes, washed it out, put a mess of product in it and tried blow drying it upside down. NOTHING. Still looks just awful. Plain awful. So tomorrow, with hat planted firmly on head, I plan on marching back there and demanding a refund. Will update upon return. read more

Came here for a simple, straight blow out and was very disappointed. I was hesitant to go here over dry bar but it's across the street from my office and I took a chance. The space itself is very nice and clean. And the stylists including mine (don't know her name) all seemed very nice but the overall blowout was terrible. First - this was so time consuming. I can appreciate stylists taking their time but I was literally just asking for my not particularly long hair to be washed and dried. This appt took over an hour! Second - I don't know how many times I needed to say straight to actually get my hair straight. I will take some blame at first, after saying straight she suggested some curl which I said OK to. Once I realized she was legitimately planning to curl my whole head and it was taking 7 minutes a curl I quickly squashed that and said nope, never mind, just blow it straight. Now she only had two curls down so I don't think I set her back too much. From there it just kept going downhill. She continued to curl the bottoms of my hair... And I continued to tell her not to. She just wasn't getting what I wanted and I finally gave up. Called my boyfriend to pack my straightener so I could make it straight at the hotel we'd be staying at that night. Now at the hotel while I was trying to redo my hair I noticed that whatever product she put in my hair made it really dry. It wasn't hairspray but some type of serum. My hair wasn't shiny and didn't smell particularly good and the ends kept knotting up. I'm the first to admit when I'm in need of a haircut but I got one just a few weeks ago and my hair is normally pretty healthy looking and definitely doesn't knot like that. I only had 1.5 hours to get ready for the wedding I was attending so it was incredibly annoying to have to redo my hair especially since I asked for the most basic blow out ever. Lastly, they don't accept tip on credit card. I understand the charges merchants are hit with but I'm happy to pay a little more to offset that. Either way no tip on cc and they wouldn't make an exception even tho I was a first time (unsatisfied) client. Overall I paid $40 for a crappy wash and dry that left my hair dry and ratty looking. I am giving them 5 stars for what they are. They are not fancy, but a clean, good looking salon in a good location with reasonable prices. Staffs are polite and friendly. Noriko did wonderful job on my long coarse hair. I asked her to make it easy to style by myself and so she did. I just blow dry and it looks the same as it looked when Noriko did. They did not push the products they sell as some other salons would do. When I left, Noriko and the receptionist saw me off at the door thanking me for coming. I started walking off and looked back and found them still there smiling at me. I bet they stood there until I went out of sight. There are other salons with very good reviews, but those salons charge twice as much as this salon and I do not think they would provide twice as good service. I just went to RH Plus for a blow out ($40 for medium long hair) and walked out quite pleased with the service. My office is next door and they were able to take me right away. Maria styled my hair and brought out the beauty of my original cut, not to mention she knocked out all of the frizz from the humidity. She gave me exactly what I asked for and I was in and out in under one hour. She also used top of the line products and I noticed she uses a twin turbo hair dryer. I am a very happy, satisfied customer at RH Plus Salon. I have been to other Japanese hair salons in NYC, but this was far the best. I was nervous going to a new salon (you never know, you know!) but I was very pleased and would definitely come back again. First, the location. While it is located on the 2nd floor of a huge building, it is easy to find. One side of the salon is covered in huge windows, so you get to "people watch" the streets while you're getting your hair done. There was plenty of natural light, which I liked. I had a hair cut and a color retouch on my roots. The stylist, Noriko, was super friendly and knowledgeable about coloring products and various process. She listened to me and asked me many questions, which I thoroughly appreciated because many stylists "pretend" to listen and go about their ways. Noriko was very professional. She was able to match my color perfectly well. My cut was just what I needed and wanted. She also brought me a hot tea during my stay and gave me a quick neck & shoulders massage. Ahhh, it was so nice! I printed out a 10% off coupon from their website for first-time customers. They happily accepted. Again, I am very happy with their service, professionalism and quality. Ikuko is my stylist for over 4 years now and I always get a perfect cut from her. My hair has a mind of its known and she has mastered it and after the cut I can now control the madness myself. I wanted to bleach my hair and dye it a certain color, and especially since my hair was dyed red, it was very difficult to get what I wanted. BUT, Nana did a really really great job and gave great advice. Though it was bleached, my hair came out pretty unharmed, even though I was so scared it would fall out or something since my hair was damaged to begin with. I love the color I got. They were all very attentive and kind to me, always checking on me, and the bleach and two color processes only took about 3-4 hours. The hair cut and blow dry is pretty expensive, though, so I avoided it and left the salon wet with mousse. Also a great atmosphere and natural light! I am a guy who always goes to the same place for a haircut, where they know how I like the haircut, and I spend little time and money, so I was a bit lazy about this new place at first. Although it is not SuperCuts-cheap, it is decently priced given the quality of the haircut and the overall service. Found RH on Yelp and based on positive reviews and photos I was able to get an appointment at noon for a blissful 45 minute wash and blow-out. The whole experience was extremely professional and relaxing from the warm and friendly team, soulful music and that extra care wash/ massage/ dry.
