Inside, red ladder-back chairs, blonde wood tables, a pop art pizza slice on the wall. Paper plates. No cups, even though they sell 2-liter bottles with those 20 ouncers. It's really, at its heart, a nicely appointed takeout spot. A small space, maybe 20 seats, but friendly, the guys throwing the pizzas talked with us while they made pies. Easy, natural. Like being at someone's house. That's their food truck DNA showing through. Joey and Jay started making pizzas at backyard cookouts in 2021. Friends kept asking for more, so they bought a wood-fired truck. They blew up around Rhode Island and Massachusetts after that and opened this brick and mortar shop in 2023. We started with meatballs. Two of them in marinara with pecorino on top and fresh basil. These were exceptional. Tender, moist, herbaceous in the best way, seasoned like someone's grandmother taught them how. The sauce had real flavor, bright and rich at the same time. They were almost identical to Bettola's, which is high praise. Best meatballs I've had from a pizza place in months. I kept thinking these would be incredible in a sandwich or calzone. Then came the Sicilian pie. 16 by 12 inches, thick crust, split down the middle: half cheese, pepperoni, and olives; half grilled chicken. The crust showed serious color variation (gold to deep brown to char spots). That brick oven's running hot and nobody's micromanaging every inch. Look at the crumb structure in those cross-sections. Big, irregular air pockets. Wild shapes that only happen when time does the work. Not the uniform bubbles of rushed dough. Light, airy, crispy on the bottom, sturdy enough to hold whatever is on top. Golden brown undercarriage with real structure. In no way doughy like most Sicilians turn out. That 24-hour fermentation they talk about? It's real. You can see it. That light, airy structure leaves you full but not bloated. The pepperoni and olive side delivered. Good snap on the pepperoni, quality cheese melted perfectly, clean tomato sauce balancing sweetness and acid. Just fresh tomato flavor doing its job. The chicken side is where it gets interesting. Grilled chicken is the canary in the coal mine for pizza competence. It separates the pizza makers from the pizza fakers. Get it wrong and it's dried out on top or rubbery underneath because they don't understand that chicken needs to cook ON the pizza, not ahead of time. Moving Dough gets it. The chicken was moist, properly cooked, not dry or rubbery. They kept the cheese and sauce ratio the same as the other half, so a touch more sauce would've helped with moisture and flavor, but the fact that the chicken survived the oven tells you they know what they're doing. That's the New Haven DNA of the shop. The crust is a platform. Toppings get the spotlight. The sauce carries flavor. The cheese does its work. The crust holds it all together with that crispy foundation and doesn't compete. It works. I'd go back for those meatballs alone. But I also want to try their regular round pies, see what they do with The Hot Chick or The Tenderoni. Who goes to Barrington for pizza? Moving Dough puts it on the map.

So it was just my father and me at Fellini Pizzeria Pawtuxet Village Cranston, RI. The company was smaller. The pizza was not. Fellini's opened its Pawtuxet Village location in August 2014, bringing its famous Wickenden Street pizza to Broad Street along with a full dining room, bar and huge outdoor seating area. The first thing you notice inside is the pressed-tin ceiling, patterned in raised squares that catch the light differently depending on where you sit. Vintage parade photographs hang in black frames. Women wave from convertibles as people crowd both sides of Broad Street. A little green plant sits in a checkerboard pot near the front window. None of it feels decorated. It feels accumulated. What really makes the place, though, is the picture window that gets out of the way. The entire side of the dining room opens like a garage door onto the patio. No glass. Almost no separation. Yellow umbrellas shade the tables beneath a maple already starting to turn. String lights hang overhead. We sat inside while the breeze came straight through and joined us for lunch. The best of both worlds. It is the kind of feature newer restaurants spend a fortune trying to create. Fellini's simply opens the wall. We started with the garlic-knot meatball sliders. Three garlic knots split open and packed with sliced meatballs, marinara and provolone, then finished with olive oil and enough parmesan to turn the plate underneath them white. The knots were soft and pillowy, with enough chew to hold everything together. Meatball, melted provolone, red sauce, garlic and parmesan in every bite. Best pizza appetizer in Rhode Island. No hesitation. My father took one bite and did not say much. From him, that is a five-star review. Then they brought out the pizza. It was eighteen inches across and so big it would not fit on our table. They placed it on a stool beside us instead, where it sat at roughly the same height as my father and waited for the two of us to figure out what we had gotten ourselves into. The size was only the beginning. Fellini's calls it New York style, although the whole-wheat crust gives it a character of its own. It was thin, crisp underneath and chewy through the middle, with enough structure to support an almost absurd amount of toppings. And absurd is the right word. Pepperoni curled and darkened around the edges. Black olives covered nearly every available piece of real estate. Cheese surrounded all of it and browned across the top. Every slice carried more pepperoni and olives than some places put on half a pizza. This pie should have collapsed under its own ambition. It did not. The crust stayed crisp and held everything together from the outside edge toward the tip. Nothing about the pizza was restrained. Fellini's built an eighteen-inch pie, covered it with as much as it could reasonably carry, then went a little beyond responsible. That was the point. The balance still worked. The cheese did not bury the sauce. The pepperoni brought the salt and a little heat. The olives brought even more savory flavors. The thin crust kept the whole thing from becoming heavy, even when everything on top of it suggested otherwise. This is not a delicate pizza. It is a generous one. Especially for the price. The service was friendly and attentive throughout. No hovering. No waiting around trying to find someone. Just an easy lunch while the Red Sox played on the television in the corner and my father and I kept looking over at the pizza on the stool, trying to calculate whether the leftovers would fit in the refrigerator without removing a shelf. My mother got a day with her granddaughters. My father got out of the house. I got him to myself for a while. And Fellini's sent us home with enough pizza to make Sunday lunch last until at least Tuesday.

This may have been alleviated by baking the sandwich a bit before serving. Sandwiches come in one size here, which is a 12-in grinder. I would have ordered a slice as well, but the pizza in the case seemed to be pretty old and needed a refresh to be appealing. There is a very large menu, including pasta platters that include penne, ravioli or tortellini with meatballs, real veal or chicken. That's unusual for a takeout place with just a couple of tables.
