Crispy chicken fried rice - 10/10, chicken was juicy and super crispy, paired with two different sauces (1) some sort of creamy mayo aioli (2) sweet chili sauce; i personally preferred the sweet chili sauce. The rice itself was subtle, with a slight soy sauce flavor; definitely allowed the chicken to shine. Thai iced tea - 8/10, good thai tea. not too sweet, stronger on the tea side. We chose to sit outside on a beautiful sunny Mother's Day, and surprisingly we didn't wait very long! Plenty of seating so that was great. Service was very quick and friendly, despite how busy it was. We haven't found one in the South Bay. I would give it 5 stars if the service was a bit more organized. It was easy to get on the waitlist on Yelp but getting seated after the system said our table was ready took awhile. We didn't get any water for at least 15 minutes and our tea didn't come until we asked for it. Despite imperfections in service, the food is excellent. Rice Barn is such a great find in the Vacaville area! The location is convenient with plenty of parking, which is always a plus. If you come early for dinner, there's no wait and no need for reservations, but by 6pm the restaurant was already getting crowded. The food was overall really solid with generous portions. The tamarind shrimp was good and came in huge portions, though it could've used a bit more seasoning. The oxtail soup, on the other hand, was the star--perfectly cooked, hearty, and absolutely delicious. I could've easily had more of it. The duck fried rice was also cooked to perfection. The spicy beef salad, however, was on the mild side and didn't quite deliver--I'd probably skip that next time. Drinks-wise, the lychee iced tea was refreshing but a little too sweet for my taste. Prices are very reasonable, the service was great, and the menu is both creative and extensive. While a few dishes could use more seasoning, the overall quality, value, and variety make Rice Barn one of the best Thai spots in Vacaville--and I've tried several in the area. There's both indoor and outdoor seating, and they can accommodate larger groups as well. The place has plenty of tables, an inviting atmosphere, and lots of parking. The staff is dressed in cultural clothing and are pretty attentive. They check in regularly, offer to refill drinks, and are quick with serving up food. The food took a long time, the chicken in my fried rice was hard and very dry, and the dish lacked flavor. Same for my partner's Pad Thai, worse we've ever had. Not sure how long the Rice Barn has been open, but I made my first visit about a year ago. Since that time, I've returned on four other occasions and have enjoyed every visit. I think one of the reasons I didn't go to the Rice Barn sooner, is that it looks kind of unassuming from the outside. A classic case of don't judge a book by its cover. Service is always great. Plenty of smiles and help if you have any questions. A small item I really like is the cups they serve the water in. Metal...Stays cold and refreshing. Food is really good. I've tried the Lemon Chicken, Pad See Ew, Oxtail Soup, Basil Chopped Chicken, Honey Mustard Gyoza, and Papaya Salad over the course of my visits. All good, but some items are definitely better than others. I say the Lemon Chicken and Pad See Ew are extremely good. I also really enjoy the Papaya Salad. I've known some close friends for over 30 years now that are from Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, and all their parties have Papaya Salad, and it's by far the best I've ever tasted. This isn't to that level, but it is very good. Better than I get at other Thai restaurants. Prices are fair and affordable. There appears to be a nice selection of wine to choose from as well. This is a spacious restaurant with a great outdoor seating area and a menu full of options to suit any taste. However, the name is a little misleading by calling it a wine bar. They do have alcoholic drinks but a very small wine menu. Only one Sauvignon blanc and they were out. I was surprised to see it packed on a Thursday, it's clearly a local favorite. I'm surprised it took me so long to try this place out. I am so happy that I did! Came here on a Sunday after church, about 30 minutes after they opened. There was already plenty of people there to eat lunch, but a good amount of seating left. Their menu is HUGE! It made it so hard to decide on what to order. We ended up getting an order of their wings, tamarind prawns, spicy beef salad, and two orders of their pad thai with bean thread noodles. Everything was really delicious, great flavors, and pretty big portions! The only dish we were kind of iffy on was the spicy beef salad. The meat seemed like it was boiled or maybe pan fried from frozen, rather than grilled. It jut didn't have that bbq flavor we were expecting, and was a little tough. So that dish was just ok. But the appetizers we got were defiinitely super delicious. The wings were sticky and sweet, and the shrimp had a nice creamy, tamarind flavor (almost like a thai version of walnut prawns). Lastly, the pad thai was sooo good. Loved that they had the option to serve it with the bean thread noodles versus the flat rice noodles that it usually comes with. Made the dish a lot lighter. I introduced my husband to Rice Barn for our anniversary. I had been here a couple of times before with a girl friend during our occasional weekday visits to Vacaville. This time it was on a Saturday for lunch. The past couple of times I had lunch specials. I guess they don't offer lunch specials on weekends. We each ordered from the Noodles/Street Food section of the menu. My husband ordered the Drunken Man Noodles (beef, wide rice noodles, eggs, cabbage, green bean, yellow onion, red bell, basil, chili garlic sauce - on recommendation of our server when he asked which of three choices she recommended) and I had the Kao Soi (chicken breast, milk curry, egg noodles, red onion, cilantro, lime, green onion.) We were both really impressed with our choices. The flavors were exquisite and the portion sizes very generous. Note to Maribeth if you are reading this. We were given ice water in cute little metal bowls. I was parched after taking a long hike. I picked up my bowl to drink and it immediately fell out of my hand and water and ice was everywhere. The crispy pork belly was either old or over cooked because it was dry and hard almost jerky like. Same goes with the duck that went on the fried rice. Overcooked or was like under heating lamp too long? or something along the lines. Tom yum soup & the red curry was a bit disappointing as far as authentic flavor. Only food that was somewhat ok was the kids meal as kids were entertained with the dinosaur and crispy chicken was good but fried rice again like the duck fried rice was not great. We got there right before 5 after they open back up at 430pm on a Friday. 40 mins wait for indoor seating but luckily the outdoor was open & well equipped with heat lamps and shade that came down to block the wind to keep us cozy. Usually we love Rice Barn, but Monday night was egregious. We were second on a 11 minute waitlist, and then waited 40 minutes and watched people who arrived after us get seated. We assumed they had reservations, until we noticed along with another couple that people on the waitlist below us were being seated. When we asked the manager why, he was rudely dismissive and tried to say it was because of the number of people in our party. But he had also skipped the couple in line with us who only had two people. On top of that, the staff was extremely slow in clearing tables, even when there was a long line of people inside and out waiting to be seated. We ended up leaving because of the absurd wait. The texture of the scallops and the lychee was really interesting. They kind of mimicked each other. The sweetness of the lychee was incredible with the tenderness and freshness of the scallops. The only good thing was the ambience inside. Very disappointing experience. We were a group of six and waited about 20-25 minutes just for someone to take our drink order. When the food arrived, we were surprised to find out that no sides are included on weekend nights, which was not mentioned anywhere on the menu. I ordered an eggplant dish with chicken and vegetables and had to order rice separately after the food was already served. Unfortunately, the food itself was also not good. All six of us noticed that the dishes tasted overly sweet, and mine was very greasy. I even ended up with stomach pain afterwards. To top it off, the bill included an automatic 18% gratuity plus another fee and taxes, none of which were clearly disclosed beforehand. I don't think tipping should be forced, especially when the service and overall experience were disappointing. Overall, slow service, unclear pricing, and underwhelming food.
