Came here for a second time. I somehow forgot about the place but now I remember why I gave it a 5 star review in 2023. The place serves authentic Thai dishes and it is best to share family style if you come with several people so that you can experience more dishes. Started with a Sake "Mohito". It was very good. Mild flavor and not crazy strong. I nursed it throughout my entire meal. The Fresh Spring Rolls were as the name advertised. Vegetarian with tofu inside. Interesting thing is that it was served with two sauces, but the traditional peanut sauce but also a Thai Sweet Chili sauce. I decided to combine both sauces onto my Spring Rolls. Surprisingly, the two sauces complemented each other pretty well. The Yellow Curry was smooth and thick (not watery like some places). Rich is flavor. I can probably just eat some plain rice with just the curry sauce and I would be happy. It's that good. The Crispy Chicken with Ginger Rice was a crowd favorite as well. The chicken itself was solid but pretty standard. The ginger rice added a unique flavor to the dish. I've never had ginger rice at a restaurant before. We also had a stir fry dish that was composed of asparagus and a protein of your choice. We chose chicken. It was also solid but not as unique as the other two entrees we had. Came here on a weekday for an early dinner. My family was already sat on the outside patio and I ordered my drink within 5 minutes. The menu is pretty unique lots of different options. We ordered the Thai tea, fried shrimp appetizer, fried chicken fried rice, and the pad see you. We also did a pad see you to go. The thai tea and shrimp appetizer was good. Unfortunately the entrees were subpar. There was just no flavor to the dishes I had to ask for sauces and chili oil to try to make it taste better. The fried chicken was very crispy but again there was no seasoning it just tasted like oil. After eating we waited about 20 minutes for our check. The other wait staff would go to their table and directly leave. No one checked on us after we asked for sauces for the food. I had to get up and go inside to ask for to go containers and had to wait even longer for the check although I asked for both at the same time. I also had to ask repeatedly for the Togo order and was left waiting on that then waited even longer with the waitress never coming back for the check. I had to end up walking inside and paying with a random person at the counter. This totaled over a 40 minute wait with my family eventually leaving with the kids and me waiting to box our food and pay because it was taking so long which is unacceptable. Rice Barn offers your typical Thai food cuisine and unfortunately, it did not live up to par. The dishes are just okay - nothing too spectacular that would really make me crave the dishes here. Surprisingly, my main complaint for the yellow curry was that it had too much chicken. I wanted more variety and balance with the potatoes and carrots. I expected the carrots to be crunchy, but not with the potatoes. The potatoes were on the tougher side and just needed a bit more time to cook and soften. And also with more cooking time means the soup to be thicker, which it also needed. Overall, taste of the yellow curry was decent, just the ingredients were a bit off. As an appetizer, the pork belly surprisingly had a good portion size. Or maybe that's just the illusion of the long plate it is served on? Among the dishes we ordered, this was my least favorite. It was not crispy, more on the harder and chewy texture. It just didn't have that crisp like a typical crispy pork belly should. The other two dishes - pad see ew and pineapple fried rice - were great. Taste, texture, color - all near-perfection. The pad see ew can add a bit more on the portion size, otherwise both dishes are a must to order here. As for customer service, we had pleasant experience. We did not know they close mid-day, so we arrived about little more than 30 minutes before closing, but they were still pretty eager to take us in. The rice itself was subtle, with a slight soy sauce flavor; definitely allowed the chicken to shine. Thai iced tea - 8/10, good thai tea. not too sweet, stronger on the tea side. I have bookmarked this place for a while since watching Check Please! My husband was hesitant because he can't believe he can find authentic Thai food in Vacaville of all places l. We haven't found one in the South Bay. I would give it 5 stars if the service was a bit more organized. It was easy to get on the waitlist on Yelp but getting seated after the system said our table was ready took awhile. We didn't get any water for at least 15 minutes and our tea didn't come until we asked for it. Despite imperfections in service, the food is excellent. Rice Barn is such a great find in the Vacaville area! The location is convenient with plenty of parking, which is always a plus. If you come early for dinner, there's no wait and no need for reservations, but by 6pm the restaurant was already getting crowded. The food was overall really solid with generous portions. The tamarind shrimp was good and came in huge portions, though it could've used a bit more seasoning. The oxtail soup, on the other hand, was the star--perfectly cooked, hearty, and absolutely delicious. I could've easily had more of it. The duck fried rice was also cooked to perfection. The spicy beef salad, however, was on the mild side and didn't quite deliver--I'd probably skip that next time. Drinks-wise, the lychee iced tea was refreshing but a little too sweet for my taste. Prices are very reasonable, the service was great, and the menu is both creative and extensive. While a few dishes could use more seasoning, the overall quality, value, and variety make Rice Barn one of the best Thai spots in Vacaville--and I've tried several in the area. Not sure how long the Rice Barn has been open, but I made my first visit about a year ago. Since that time, I've returned on four other occasions and have enjoyed every visit. I think one of the reasons I didn't go to the Rice Barn sooner, is that it looks kind of unassuming from the outside. A classic case of don't judge a book by its cover. It's not that it ugly or anything, just isn't an eye catcher. I'd say the same a bit about the inside. Not spectacular but it is very cozy and comforting. Good location right next to Nugget Market. Service is always great. Plenty of smiles and help if you have any questions. A small item I really like is the cups they serve the water in. Metal...Stays cold and refreshing. Food is really good. I've tried the Lemon Chicken, Pad See Ew, Oxtail Soup, Basil Chopped Chicken, Honey Mustard Gyoza, and Papaya Salad over the course of my visits. All good, but some items are definitely better than others. I say the Lemon Chicken and Pad See Ew are extremely good. I also really enjoy the Papaya Salad. I've known some close friends for over 30 years now that are from Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, and all their parties have Papaya Salad, and it's by far the best I've ever tasted. This isn't to that level, but it is very good. Better than I get at other Thai restaurants. Prices are fair and affordable. There appears to be a nice selection of wine to choose from as well. I'm surprised it took me so long to try this place out. I am so happy that I did! Came here on a Sunday after church, about 30 minutes after they opened. There was already plenty of people there to eat lunch, but a good amount of seating left. Their menu is HUGE! It made it so hard to decide on what to order. We ended up getting an order of their wings, tamarind prawns, spicy beef salad, and two orders of their pad thai with bean thread noodles. Everything was really delicious, great flavors, and pretty big portions! The only dish we were kind of iffy on was the spicy beef salad. The meat seemed like it was boiled or maybe pan fried from frozen, rather than grilled. It jut didn't have that bbq flavor we were expecting, and was a little tough. So that dish was just ok. But the appetizers we got were defiinitely super delicious. The wings were sticky and sweet, and the shrimp had a nice creamy, tamarind flavor (almost like a thai version of walnut prawns). Lastly, the pad thai was sooo good. Loved that they had the option to serve it with the bean thread noodles versus the flat rice noodles that it usually comes with. Made the dish a lot lighter.
