I finally tried 88 Bao Bao a few months ago, after wanting to try it for quite some time now. I ordered BBQ pork buns, pork xiaolong bao, and Shanghai chow mein. The pork xiaolong bao was pretty good. The soup in them was seasoned well and same with the pork. In Filipino culture, we have something similar to pork buns, called siopao, which happens to be one of my favorite snacks growing up. I was very pleased when taking my first bite of the bbq pork buns. They tasted great, especially with a splash of soy sauce. The Shanghai chow mein was unfortunately underwhelming for both me and my daughter. I was hoping it would be more flavorful, but regretfully it wasn't. Decided to grab dinner before heading to Homegoods and this was such a good decision! We've always loved 88 Bao Bao, and we were craving something comforting and hearty on such a cold winter night. We opted for a veggie chow mein, pork xiao long baos, pan fried pork buns, and shaomai this time. Everything came out steaming, especially those pan fried buns! Iykyk!! Kind of bummed that we forgot about their wontons in chili oil (which is absolutely a must order), but we already ordered so much food as it was, it probably would have been overkill. There's always next time! I like that you order at the register and then grab seating for dine-in. Only problem would be if all the tables were taken. We had to try this place despite some low star reviews and gave it a try. The place isn't as big and you will have to order before claiming a table. Ambiance is casual. We ordered quite a feast and I loved everything! We got chicken fried rice, crab & pork xiao long bao, leek, pork & shrimp steamed dumplings, beef chowmein, popcorn chicken, cucumber salad and beef noodle soup. They were all delicious, tasty and large portions. Service was excellent too as I had mistakenly ordered fried noodles but I really meant chowmein, and the guy who delivered the noodles replaced it with chowmein. I was so grateful and happy. Came here for lunch after shopping nearby stores, and boy did we have a great meal after almost a year since we were here last! Place was almost full, but we were seated promptly (no table service tho). Interior was clean and organized, and you get a wide view of the open kitchen, which was also organized and clean, especially the hood and cooking areas. As far as ordering food, you have the option of either ordering at the table (mini tablet mounted) or at the counter. Everything is pretty much self service (ice water, napkins, to-go containers) and the food brought out by a staff member. We ordered the pork Xiao long bao, chicken vermicelli noodles and pan fried pork buns. All three items were simply delicious; the dumplings were one of the best, matched up against even the best in Sacramento. There was plenty of broth in each dumpling and the skin was perfect. The vermicelli noodles wasn't greasy, and there was an abundance of scrambled eggs, chicken, bean sprouts and the noodles itself (we opted for no onions, yellow or green). The pan fried pork bun was browned to a crisp on the bottom, and the filling was plentiful with the right amount of broth. What a treat we had today; the wifey and I agreed that 88 Bao Bao was better than some places we frequent that's closer to us (Elk Grove). The place isn't a big place so it was kinda cramped if there were a lot of people. I love that they have the clear window by the kitchen so you actually get to see them making your food for you. My favorite was the pan fried pork buns. Had great flavor. Can definitely taste the porkiness in the meat and when you bit into the bun, you get a bit of the juice that is amazing. It was a little different since you have to get up and order at the counter when you're ready. We both wanted to try the Shanghai style chowmein, but I wanted chicken and he wanted shrimp (I am allergic). The person at the register suggested to order the chicken and add a side of shrimp for a better option. I also wanted potstickers, but they said it would be a long wait, so we decided to try the pork and vegetables steamed dumplings. While we waited, my son mentioned he liked that you are able to view them cooking and preparing dumplings. The chowmein arrived fresh and hot and was delicious. My son did say he wished the shrimp had been seasoned and a little hotter. The dumplings arrived halfway through our meal, and I did think I could've just ordered the potstickers since I had to wait anyways. The dumplings were quite hot and good. I'm always looking for the next franchise opportunity. This concept of ordering dim sum, chow mein, and many other Chinese dishes at a counter and having them delivered to your table within 5 minutes is a great concept and is close to being very good. Starting with the positives. Service good. Portions very good. Condiments on table good. We ordered popcorn chicken, chow mein, and siu mai (shu mai). The popcorn chicken was a huge portion. Tender. Crunchy. But not a lot of taste without the condiments. I am used to the 5 spices used in the boba shops. Maybe they can add that option on their menu. Chow mein was also a generous portion. Decent taste but ours had a slightly burnt taste. Believe me, I'm Chinese and 64 and often eat in Chinese restaurants. Siu mai was chewy. I love Siu mai and I was craving coming here. 8 for $12 is decent price. But honestly, it was a little chewy. Even the siu mai we get at the to go counter at SF market is a little smaller but steamed to be less chewy. Just a little tweaking needs to be done here. Overall, concept is great. Food was decent. Prices not bad. On the door, they posted many new menu items. I believe they need to tweak the recipes a little more to get rid of the burnt taste in the chow mein and also make the siu mai less chewy. This chain has the potential for a 4-5 star rating with a few changes. Would I come back? If I was seriously craving those dishes and there weren't many options in the area. In Elk Grove, possibly. There was a good amount of soup inside and it was flavorful. Cucumber salad - This was disappointing. The cucumber pieces were cut way too thick and they were not marinated at all. Pretty good fast food dim sum. I usually order the shao mai and shrimp dumplings. These are standard in quality, not bad and both have good flavor. The wrappers for each are on par. I have ordered the crab pork soup dumplings (xiao long bao) frequently when it is cold outside. These are super tasty and soooo good when you want soup but don"t want to eat a whole bowl of liquid. I first tried 88 Bao Bao's Vallejo location which is a bit newer. I enjoyed the food there so I was happy to try the location in Vacaville recently. I think it was listed as a dim sum place on Yelp but they don't have the full traditional dim sum items. The favorite menu items seem to different between locations. But they offer mostly the same stuff. I think the Vacaville location has a couple more offering but they are also more established. The seating here is very limited or they are very popular. It is order at the counter and take a number/seat yourself. A combination of counter and table service. You may want to consider ordering for take out if there aren't tables open at the time. It's a more casual ambiance. The dumplings are still just as delicious. We also ordered the grilled calamari and the beef roll. The beef roll had a lot of cilantro fyi. While I love cilantro I know it's polarizing and some people have been cursed with the soap gene so keep that in mind. read more
