Extremely unprofessional experience. My wife was brought in for a "working interview" from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM and was expected to work the entire day while there was no real staff in the office besides the dentist himself. It honestly felt like free labor instead of an actual interview. Afterward, her calls and messages were ignored for days, and then she was simply told she would not be paid for her time. This is completely unacceptable and disrespectful to people's time and effort. We will be reporting this situation to HR and the appropriate labor authorities. As someone previously mentioned...Going to the dentist is anxiety ridden. Feeling comfortable with your Doctor is of paramount importance, indeed. This wasn't the case with Dr. Angell. I was perplexed by the lack of professionalism, disrespect to his Assistant and strange comments coming from his mouth. Never have I ever given more confusing looks to a Doctor before. Let me explain: #1-It was explained to me that his original Assistant had back injuries and was on leave. He then goes into detail about her personal story. (Like, I don't know this lady...never met her). The initial consultation, he was alone. The day of the procedure, he had an Assistant there that appeared to be new or a Temp. Dr. Angell was so rude to her & it made me uncomfortable. When he felt she didn't understand, he'd roll his eyes, cuss or grunt & point and at times try a few Spanish commands on her..."Abajo," "A la derecha," etc. she looked pretty defeated. Very disrespectful. #2-Dr. Angell was running on a skeleton crew and seems to visibly suffer from TYPE A tendencies on steroids. FOUR TIMES during my root canal procedure, he stopped what he was doing to answer the phone!!! They were not quick calls! I'm in an uncomfortable position and he's answering the gosh darn phone! Put it on answering machine dude! #3-His patience for clients asking questions are minimal. I'd ask a question and he'd say, "Well, I discussed that in length and I don't know how much more simple I can make it! It's on the paper I gave you too." I'd respond, "I'm a lay person, explain it knowing I don't understand it all!" I needed a root canal but also have a huge growth (cist or bubble), on my gums. The doctor shared it was the size of a hazelnut...that's big. I asked him why he can't just drain the bubble. His response was that would be painful as he'd have to drill through bone. I stated, "I'm talking about the bubble...not the bone...(soft tissue with liquid in it), he said that was a bone. Now, I'm not an endodontist, but that's a bubble/cist!). The third visit, I asked him again about the bubble/cist. After the root canal, the bubble was even bigger. I started to ask again about draining it. I told him I was perplexed with his initial statement that it was bone. He said, it could be drained. He said, "Initially it was boney and now it's liquid and tissue." WTF? Four days later and it's transformed from bone to tissue? Hmmm...he got frustrated with my questioning and said..."It can be drained by an Oral Surgeon." #4-Dr. Angell's overall attitude with me was very dismissive and condescending. Not a fan of that at all. I'm an educated and retired Educator with many years of education. (Something he didn't know about me). I felt slided and quite frankly spent $600 and used good insurance to have my situation rectified. It wasn't and I now have to search for an Oral Surgeon. He complained about my insurance and charged me $600 which seemed a bit high. Then, proceeded to tell me I can handle it considering I just returned from CANCÚN. Really??!! Excellent Skills - My x-ray showed one single root in my tooth, during the root canal procedure, Dr. Angell decided to "probe" around because he just didn't feel right, turned out, I have two root ends in the tooth. Had he not done probing around, that root canal job would've be in vain. I heard from two difference sources that commented Dr. Angell is the best endodontist in Orange County - having more than 10 root canals done by other dentist/endodontist, I would say he is the best one so far in my experience. 2. Well Bedside Manner - I was informed before every step. I am a nervous type, and I would like to know what's about to be done to me. They put lip balm around my lips so I don't end up with cracked lips. Little details like that made your root canal visit a no stress experience. 3.Good customer service (this reminds me of what a good customer service should be) - Staff called the pharmacy for antibiotic (even though I only have the name of the pharmacy and the approximate location). The very best Endodontist I have ever been to. I was sent here by my dentist. Dr. Angell is the most up to date and well equipped professional that I have been to. He explains everything in detail, and does not do root canals if not indicated. Dr. Angell is the first to do a successful root canal because he has takes the time to help you understand and wait through the process. I truly believe he cares however, my one comment: personality and the front office are not a strong point. If you are able to get over that he is the best. Got referred to Dr. Angell's office to determine if a root canal could save my tooth. The referring office explicitly instructed them to not do the root canal (to save money) if it was determined the crack was too deep to save the tooth. When the tooth was opened, it was determined it could not be saved. I understand there is some work in opening the tooth and I would pay for that. My tooth was later extracted that day at another dental practice. To my surprise, when I received the bill the office had charged $830 for the work. This is MORE than what another dentist would charge for a complete root canal. I already paid $275 up front during the visit while they also got compensated by my insurance. What gets me is they were still after additional money because the insurance didn't fully pay what they felt they were entitled to. I called the office to explain how I felt the fees were too high given the original objective of trying to save money by not completing a root canal. In speaking to Nancy (billing admin) about this, her demeanor soon turned sour and she ended up hanging up on me. This is extremely RUDE and UNPROFESSIONAL behavior. I had a root canal done by Dr. Angell about 10 years ago (2005) and my experience was a fantastic one. I am very fearful of dentists and dental procedures after having a bad experience with a previous dentist. My whole memory as a kid was going to the dentist and tripping out on laughing gas and having my cavity teeth filled with that nasty mercury. The whole back of my brother and I's mouth were filled with that that black mercury filling. Genetically, my side of the family has the worst luck with dentistry stuff. I was always on top of going to dental appointments, flossing, brushing, abut always got bad news when I would go and that is why I stopped going for awhile. The root canal procedure was such a piece of cake, I wanted to leave him a tip. I went straight to work after my procedure in no pain at all! Is that weird to say? I don't know what the Dr. gave me but I left feeling super happy and not in pain at all!Dr. Angell was friendly and nice. As time passed, I tried referring people, but they couldn't get a hold of him because they were spelling his name wrong. It's Angell not angel that is why. I honestly thought he moved . Well, now I have to maybe get another root canal procedure if they can save the tooth. I will find out next week. (crossing fingers) I am glad that my dentist works with Dr. Angell. When they told me they refer patients to him, I screamed "Yes that is his name!!" Dr. Angell the 3rd!! lol... Yup, 4 that is!! :( 12/3/15 145 p.m.- went in to see regular dentist to get x-ray and check up, didn't even get to the cleaning part. My crown came off 2 weeks ago and I chipped my tooth. I was in moderate pain. 215p.m.- Reg. dr. says "You need to get a root canal and there is an opening today" (Me thinking oh no.. i don't want to do this.) 245- I arrive at Dr. Angell's office. 300- X-ray's, discussion of TX plan and shots. They numb you so well, you cannot even feel the shot, like Magic. You do taste a metallic taste after the shot, kinda sour if that makes sense. They will suck that taste out of your mouth. 330- Root canal procedure begins after another shot. I raised my left hand "Ouch, I can feel that" so he gives me another shot. (now I am super super numb) p.s. don't raise right, you will know why when you are there. :-) 345- Root canal in session. The drilling part was my least fav. part and the smells of different chemicals. 510- Root canal ends. I was able to go to my 530 p.m. night class. I took 800 mg advil to help with a scale of 6 pain. 545- arrived to class, teacher and friends were shocked that I even showed up. Teacher told me that I nuts for coming to class after a root canal procedure. She mentioned that she just had one and she couldn't even eat for a few days! I even had a starbucks hot cocoa one hour after and water. Didn't eat until 3 hours after the procedure. 1120- had to take 600 mg ibprofen for left upper cheek pain. The pain level was a 6.. nothing bad. Next day I woke up to go to work. Called the boss to let her know that I was super tired and was running late but still coming in. I took advil twice that day. No pain at all, no swelling, was able to drink cold water for the first time in one year on the side that I had tooth pain. What a sense of relief!! I never needed to take my Tylenol with coating!! Thank goodness!! The only complaint about having ANY root canal procedure in general is having your mouth propped openfor a good 60-90 minutes. They put a sponge in your mouth to prop it open but your jaw starts to hurt towards the end. And of course the sound of the instruments and smells like bleach and cloves during the procedure. You smell all sorts of different things during a root canal procedure. If I could remember clearly it goes smell of drilling, smell of bleach, smell of clove, smell of flesh, smell of bleach again for awhile, then smell of hot glue. Pretty interesting! No pain during the procedure. Overall, another great experience. I had to get more shots than normal but that was my fault for taking so long to get my tooth fixed. Dr. Angell is so great talking to you during the procedure and making sure that you are okay. He explains in detail what he is going to do before he does it :-) He is so fast and good at what he does. I am glad I was able to get my root canal again with Dr. Angell. I have referred a friend to get hers done next week. I hope she has the same experience that I had. Update 12/23: Received a handwritten thank you card from Dr. Angell himself for referring my co worker. She had a wonderful experience too. She was going to see a different endo but I told her not to. Check this out. Her brother was Dr. Angell's frat brother in college, small world!! lol. I was referred to Dr. Angell for a root canal. Two previous doctors told me just to have the tooth extract because they didn't think it they could save it. I'm very glad I went to Dr. Angell he was able to save the tooth and made my visit very pleasant. It was probably one of the best root canals I've ever experienced. I was so comfortable that I actually fell asleep twice. I've had all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted and a few other root canals and it was by far the best dental experience. Dr. Angell and his assistants were great, great communication with me and great communication between with each other. I really like the fact that he explains his plan before just doing the root canal, explains what he'll do next so that I'm not surprised, and explains exactly what he did after he was done. yes he is expensive but if you are looking for a doctor that makes you comfortable , explains details, and knows what they are doing then I would highly recommend Dr. Angell. Let's face it no one wants a root canal and my issue was compounded by a prior cap had reduced what little tooth there was left significantly. But I have to say that Dr. Angell made the whole procedure as pleasant as such a thing could possibly be. The good: The staff was pleasant and accommodating. I'm always amazed at people who don't inquire about the cost of a procedure BEFORE they have it done. So when I made the appointment, I asked. Anyway, when I arrived, his staff had already contacted my insurance and I was told exactly what the price and balance to me was going to be - so no surprises. When I arrived for my appointment, I didn't have to wait, I was actually taken in within a few minutes. Dr. Angell thoroughly explained the procedure both before and more importantly, during the procedure; I found that he had a nice chair-side manner. Great drugs! I can honestly say that once I was numbed up I felt no pain at all during the whole thing. Yes, it was uncomfortable in sense that you have all this stuff going on for over an hour, but for me anyway, no actual pain. The no-so-good: Yes, it was expensive, while I had insurance it's not the greatest coverage, so I was left paying about $400 out of pocket. And I was expecting it because I, like, ASKED, ahead of time. But they take Amex so at least I got points! But Dr. Angell saved my tooth -- who wants to wear a bridge or dentures! -- and I was able to go back to my regular dentist and have a cap reinstalled. So while I sincerely hope I never have to see him again :), I would recommend him to anyone who unfortunately has to have a root canal. read more

I was referred to Dr Angell for a root canal. The procedure was long, as expected. Everything was explained to me, including that they would follow up with me to see how I was doing in a couple of days. That didn't happen. I had some complications and called the office, left a message, nobody called me back. I had to call back over and over until I was able to get a call back. The lady at the office told me they would call my pharmacy to fill another prescription for antibiotics and she would call me back the same day to let me know this was done. That never happened! I suffered in pain for another couple of days until my pharmacy called saying my prescription was ready. NOBODY from Dr Angell's office followed up with me like they said they would, they didn't care. I will never go back or recommend this office. I was referred to Dr. Angell to fix a reinfected root canal that I had performed a few years ago. I called in and made an appointment for the early morning to get it checked out. There were possible complications (possible cracked tooth) that could have made the job much worse, thus the reason for the referral. Dr. Angell was very professional. He took the time to sit me down and go over the possibilities, as well as walking me through the x-rays he took before, during and after the procedure so I could see where the concern was and why it was a concern. He even showed me before and after x-rays side by side so I could see how the procedure corrected the issues with the tooth. I felt next to nothing during the procedure, and he was always checking in with me to make sure I was not experiencing any discomfort. I had my 1st root canal with Dr. Angell and was in terrible pain prior to it, and extremely nervous. I had a really bad infection, but Dr. Angell ensured me that he was going to take his time and make sure that it all was cleared out no matter how long it took (4.5 hours), do a thorough job, and make sure that I left feeling better. I would NEVER go to Dr, Angell again. Don't let the name fool you. He is NO Angel--just the opposite. He is a rip-off artist and a blackmailer. I went to him because I was referred by my general dentist to consult with him as to if I would be a candidate for a root canal on one tooth. Dr. Angell is an approved provider on my dental insurance, so my dental office made the appointment for me while I was at their office. The appointment was very brief. He took three x-rays of the tooth in question, blew some cold air on the tooth, looked at the x-rays and told me he could not guarantee that a root canal would be successful, and I went on my way. They submitted it to my insurance company as an emergency appointment--which it was not. The visit took place during regular office hours, on a Tuesday at 11am. When I received the statement from the insurance company of the eligible charges and the balance due statement Dr. Angell's office, I was FLABBERGASTED! They charged $175 for the office visit, $110 for three x-rays (how many x-rays do you need to see ONE TOOTH?) and $50 for a pulp vitality test. I called the billing clerk and questioned the charges and was told the $50 pulp vitality was for spraying a shot of cold air on the tooth to see if it was sensitive. REALLY? What did the $175 office visit cover? I contacted my insurance company and they helped me sort out the eligible charges. I sent him a check for balance due on the eligible charges, along with a note about what my insurance determined was eligible under their contracted amounts. They continued to bill me for the remaining balance. I called to speak to Dr. Angell, but he did not return my call. The next thing I know, I received an email saying my credit score had changed, and I discovered it had dropped 47 points-- from 767 to a 720--due to a collections. They had turned it over to a collection agency! So I was BLACKMAILED by Dr. Angell to paying the unjustified and unreasonable charges to keep my credit score from being adversely affected, read more

I just finished having 4 root canals performed by Dr. Angell and he was absolutely world class. I had 2 performed each day over 2 consecutive days. His staff was also wonderful. He is very thorough, detailed and has excellent bedside manner. Always checking in to see how I was doing and accommodating me at every level. Dr. Richard Angell was everything and more as his name suggests. Truly an angel. I had flown to So. Cal on December 30th from Seattle and felt a mild "twinge" in one of my molars. On New Year's eve day I had a cup of coffee in the morning and immediately felt the worst pain I've ever had (in that tooth). The only thing that relieved the pain was to literally keep ice in my mouth next to that tooth. I searched high and low for an emergency dentist as this was now occurring on a holiday AND a weekend 1200 miles from home. I found an emergnecy dentist in Anaheim that ended up incorrectly diagnosing the problem. They gave me an antibiotic and Norco prescription and said I would need a root canal (that was the only thing they said correct). Fortunately my brother had prior care from Dr. Angell and called his cell on New Year's Day (a Sunday) as a long shot that he might return the call. To our surprise Dr. Angell returned the call (on New Year's Day/Sunday) and spoke with me inquiring about my symptoms. When I told him the tooth was heat sensitive and relieved by ice/cold he stated he was sure it wasn't an abcess but a more serious issue and I need a root canal asap. Dr. Angell changed the antibiotic prescription I was originally given and I was in his office at the next available day/time for an emergency root canal. After reading the other reviews, Here is my opinion. Although Dr. Richard Angell may not have the most friendliest disposition, He has done two root canals for me and one on my daughter. I have always been so amazed at his professionalism. He is so precise and takes the time to explain exactly what needs to be done. I was guided to Dr. Angell from my Dentist. I had my typical x-rays done at my teeth cleaning and my Dentist noticed that I had an infection beneath an old root canal. After closer review, the post in the root canal was not long enough to fill the canal and I had an infection at the bottom. This root canal was done over 15 years ago, so I was shocked that it was just showing up as a problem. My Dentist told me that it would take a highly skilled Endodontist to fix and that my tooth might not be fixable at all. I was stressed. He advised me to meet with Dr. Angell. I met with Dr. Angell for a consultation and he gave me an overview of what he would do. The plan was to drill through the crown into the canal and drill out the old post, clean the entire area and fill it with a new post and seal it up. Needless to say, it worked out so well after 3 hours of hard work. I have no pain and I am so relieved to have this behind me. I cannot recommend Dr. Angell enough. Thank you very much. read more

I came to Dr. Angell for an emergency root canal, he fit me in same day and stayed late for me, which I truly appreciate. Just had a 3 hour root canal. this will sound weird but..... awesome experience. Friendly staff, nice office... he made me feel very comfortable every step of the way. I writing to warn others of how I was treated by Dr Richard Angell III and his staff ( Sara). I had previously went .to Dr Angell for several root canals in the past , with no issues and no drama. No so much this time ! I was given a specific time that I was to meet with Dr Angel by Sara, to my surprise another Patient was booked ten minutes prior to my appointment which left me waiting for over 1 hour in the waiting room to see Dr. Angell, and very stressed, as I had a doctors appointment all the way in Irvine , that I could not be late to. This was a bad start, to appointment for which I came to in pain thinking I needed a root canal. Dr Angell tried to have what seemed to me a very inexperienced assistant do the tapping and investigation of my teeth! She clearly came across as not knowing what she was doing, so I told her that I wanted to wait for Dr Angell to investigate my teeth, because he is the Endodontist not her! It just went down hill from there! I ended up in tears and was charged the highest amount of the estimation for office consultation and a few X-rays, after making me wait over 1 hour past my appointment time!! Sara refused to let me email Dr Angell my current X-rays from my Dentist whom had just replaced my two front teeth, it was important Dr Angell view them prior to evaluating me because the tooth that I was having a lot of pain , was cracked! You would think he would welcome this information! Then I find out after specifically telling Sara and Dr Angell NOT under ANY circumstances to contact my former dentist, Sara violated HIPPA law and called my periodontist and my former dentist against my wishes and talked about my case. When I confronted Sara on this she claims, she was"just verifying my address" with my former dentist! That is NOT acceptable to me! Then I try to get Sara and Dr Angell to send my new dentist and my current periodontist the X-rays he charged me for and I got the run around again from Sara and hung up on like 6 times or she would put me on hold in the middle of me talking and then either never come back on the phone! I told her I am never coming back and then I finally get my X-rays mailed to me because they do not believe in emailing them, after I went to my new dentist and a letter saying for me to find a new Endodontist! I have news for you Dr Angell, I already fired you! And if Sara had not kept hanging up on me , you would have received that message! News flash your Front office staff represents you and your business! They can either make your success or break you! They are definitely breaking you!You may be a good Endodontist, but as others have stated on here, you and your staff need to revaluate how you treat your patients, especially in you speciality, most patients come to in a lot of pain, and do not need to feel bullied and beaten down on top of the pain!
