Stay as far away as possible. They do not honor the guarantee they gave you on their work. She claims that her root canals last a lifetime but when you actually have a problem she does not live up to her commitment and duties and refuses to even examine you without upfront full payment. Dr. Chou performed a root canal on a tooth under which my dentist saw something suspicious. When I arrived for my appointment they had not even checked my insurance coverage or their previously performed work yet and insisted to pay for the full office visit plus CT scan upfront and out-of-pocket - even though they initially guaranteed their work for a lifetime. A terrible experience. Dr. Chou was rushed and abrasive. She started the procedure without waiting for the anesthesia to take effect - I had to stop her and demanded that she waits - and banged on the other teeth with instruments multiple times. Two days following the first half of the root canal treatment I was in a lot of pain with the numbness and pain radiating into the ear and the eye on the same side of the affected tooth. Dr Chou's way to address the issue was to "wait for a couple weeks" and "see the ear doctor and the eye doctor". I had to ask another endodontist to complete the root canal; the pain and inflammation were gone the next morning after the proper procedure. I am very glad that I did not have to return to Dr. Chou - the negligence and the lack of care displayed by her were appaling. Dr. Chou's unacceptable treatment of her staff is another red flag. Her assistants were visibly scared of her; I felt sorry for them on a few occasions when Dr. Chou was rude and condescending during my procedure. Dr. Chou was recommended by my dentist of 10+ years, and what a true disappointment this experience has been. Steer clear. read more

If you have to endure a root canal go to Dr Chou. Her staff treated me like I had been a patient for years even though this was my first visit. Dr Chou took the time to prepare me and explain the procedure the entire time. I received nitrous which helped me stay calm and open my jaw as I suffer with TMJ. I had to have an emergency root canal so I didn't have time to research but my dentist highly recommended Dr Chou. They got me in right away by staying later than they normally would have, they explained what to expect before they did anything and the procedure went as planned. Nobody would say a root canal is a wonderful experience but I had high confidence in Dr Chou, the staff was friendly & competent, the office was clean and the equipment seemed very up to date so I think it went as well as possible! If you want a dentist banging your teeth with dental instruments every few seconds and forcing your mouth open so wide to the point you feel like your jaw is going to get locked, then go here. The procedure itself went well but she is SO ROUGH with her patients and staff. She only cares about her own comfort and convenience at the expense of her patients; I would never recommend this office to anyone. Shoutout to Claudia, she treats patients with so much kindness as if they were a close friend. Easily the worst experience I had ever had at any dentist office. She was brusque, in a big hurry and rough in her technique. When I complained that she had banged my teeth twice with her dental instruments, instead of apologizing , she said if I opened my mouth wider, my teeth wouldn't get hit. I've never had a healthcare professional talk to me like that in my life. I was referred to Dr. Chou for a root canal. The other two members of the office staff were friendly. The dentist spoke very little and when she did it was difficult to understand. The procedure cost almost $1,900 although according to Colgate.com the national average for a molar root canal is $1,111. I wouldn't have minded the high cost if the procedure had been successful. I still had intense pain 2 1/2 weeks after the procedure. I returned to her office and she told me everything was fine, prescribed stronger pain meds and gave me a $200 credit for my trouble. Then yesterday my jaw started throbbing and swelled up to the size of golf ball. I declined her offer to come see her again and instead went to another endodontist in the area. Completely different experience. Took plenty of time and carefully performed a thorough exam. Back on antibiotics and hoping I won't end up having to have the root canal redone. My advice is to steer clear. read more

Disclosure: like most people I hate going to the dentist. I was referred to Dr. Chou by my sister-in-law who I should mention used to be a dental assistant. When I arrived at Dr. Chou's office the lady at the front desk was nice. She gave me a new clean mask and gloves which I didn't mind at all. My root canal took two days which I completely understand is typical. Also I have had two other root canal's so I'm familiar with the process. Dr. Chou was very knowledgeable and she explained everything to me in advance. I was a little nervous at the start...yet she was so quick and I felt very little to almost no pain during and after the root canal. Although her prices might be more than others... They had me do a CT scan on-site before I even see the doctor, which they said "It's necessary for you but unfortunately uncovered by your insurance!". They had me pay $200 for that. And then I saw the doctor, which was the most rushing dentist I have ever seen. She was not even giving me the chance to talk. She spent a grand total of maybe 5 minutes with me, for which they charged me another $100. So I basically ended up paying $300 on the spot for nothing. Dr. Chou is the best Endodontist in Orange County. Here is why: Honest/Trustworthy -- she stopped half way through my root canal because the crack in my tooth warranted a discussion on whether to continue with the full procedure or extract the tooth entirely. I elected to choose the latter and decided to go with a dental implant. Super Smart/Experienced -- B.S. UCLA, D.D.S. NYU, Advanced Endo Program at USC and practicing since 1997. The procedure was almost painless (but then again my toothache probably masked the shots and the drilling). Still she was awesome. Latest Technology -- cone beam CT image system, digital radiographs, dental microscopes, electronic dental records, etc. Perfectionist Approach -- she will do whatever it takes to treat the infection/inflammation and make sure you get the best treatment. Patient/Pleasant Demeanor -- answered all my questions, very nice, and was even funny. She even personally followed up with me and left me a VM afterwards to make sure I was alright. I am so impressed with Dr. Chou! She handled an infected root canal for me, perfectly. No pain, no discomfort, checked up on me the next day, gave me her cell phone if I needed anything, and she answered it at 10pm when I called with a concern that turned out to be nothing. She was SO NICE about it, and always made me feel like I came first. I have since seen her for a complete repair of a very old root canal and that was an even better experience if possible! I have found her to be very professional, very knowledgeable, explains everything she's doing and why to me (ahead of time and during the procedures), checks in with me while she is working to make sure I am ok and not feeling anything. I'm not an easy patient (I hate the shots) and she is very willing to address my concerns and/or requests. Plus she works very fast! She is so skilled at what she is doing you are out of that chair fast, I love that! I found the office staff to be lovely, kind, and caring! What a pleasure to deal with them.
