I am forever grateful for this place. I wasn't really looking for a tree this year (as I normally don't every year) but it was needed for my little family and I. I was in search of a small tree to commemorate our beloved fur child Bruno, who suddenly passed away this year. My husband and I made our yearly stop to Richard Tajiri's Christmas Trees now located at Ala Moana Center off Atkinson Drive on Wed., 11/27/24 at 11:00a. Since it was the day before Thanksgiving there were no lines and that made searching for our tree so easy. I love the trees that are now chosen by Paula and Ami. The quality is still the same. They select the most fragrant, most freshest and most symmetrical trees from the Pacific Northwest. I can attest to that. Last year my tree could have lasted another month. It was nice seeing Ami and Paula as they helped us and directed two young men to help us find our perfect tree. We looked at several white flocked trees and decide to get a white flocked Noble Fir. There are other trees on the lot to choose from such as Douglas Fir, Grand Fir, as well as Wreaths, and Holiday Centerpieces, and much more. Thanksgiving was a good time to get a tree there. Lots of parking, no lines, and good tree selection. We need a 5 ft. to 6 ft. grand fir which usually has a limited supply. Not many places sell grand firs & 5 ft. height makes it even harder. This year had several to select from and tree assistants were friendly and patient. We're worried since we heard half the number of trees were brought in so surprised we had a decent selection compared to previous years. read more

So, I started decorating my tree and wasn't sure if if it was my imagination, but, I thought maybe it was beginning to turn. I called Richard Tajiri's people and they said it was odd. I took delivery of the tree 12 days ago. I took pictures and sent them to Paula. She said to come down to the lot and she'd give me a tree IV. FOR REAL!! Paula said, every once in a while they have a tree that "just doesn't like being cut". She explained how to use the IV. Simply drill a whole into the trunk with the provided drill bit, insert the IV, fill the reservoir with water and tree preservative and place the reservoir higher than the inserted IV. By golly, it worked!! The IV revived my tree. I'd say, this is the best tree I have ever had! The white flocked tips really add that Christmas feeling. read more

Tajiri's Christmas Trees is located on the corner of University Ave and Coyne St (across from RB Sports bar). This is our first Christmas as a married couple, so I wanted to do something special. We decided to purchase our first real Christmas tree together. Since space is limited in our apartment, we decided to get a small tree (about 3-4 foot). I think this was the perfect tree for us to start with =] Our tree came out to $44 and we ended up buying a tree stand for $15 (you can probably get a cheaper one from Walmart or Target). I was surprised how busy it was here. I remember as a kid, you would go down to a lot selling trees, walk around and point at the one you want. Then the workers would wrap it up for you and help you load it in the car. I guess things have changed over the years. Probably just more people purchasing trees compared to before and probably less workers willing to help during the holidays. Here we had to wait in line to pick out a tree. Lucky for us we came at a good time, the line only took about 45 minutes. As we were waiting in line, I could see the back getting longer and longer and it even went out the tent in the sun (suckssss). Overall the process wasn't horrible, just be prepared to wait. read more

Since the tree lots in Pearl City have vanished we were chasing this vendor to find two trees for our house. Apparently Tajiri has used this location in the past, corner of University and Coyne. Parking was plentiful although the sign said "lot full" they lied. After parking you walk into a circus tent, literally a circus, with a manic employee employing you to pull a number. Got the number then started listening to what was being called out....17, I pulled 54! Knowing there was time we started looking at the trees in stands scattered thru half the tent area. Lots of beautiful plain and flocked trees but all marked SOLD. Okay turning around to focus on the circus we realized they were calling number after number with many skips. When your number was called you told them what size you wanted and they pulled that size from one of the containers, cut the strings binding it, tapped it on the ground and you either accepted or declined it. If you accepted it off you went to the cashier. If you declined it they would drag out another to inspect and anyone else would then have the option of taking the one you declined. So, we went from #54 to #34 and out the door. Prices seemed a little higher this year and I was leaving for Kauai so didn't bother with the flocking. I did inquire about the delivery charge. 95$ to deliver two trees from University Ave to Halawa Heights. Just a little spendy. Would have preferred to view my tree prior to buying but it's whatever the traffic will pay now. I really miss those PC lots. read more

Sad but I must agree with Anela T. I am always one of the first in line to get my flocked tree. The "kids" assisting me were in the holiday spirit bouncing around...but they were ill trained. It was concerning to watch the girl saw off the base...even the KHON camera crew wanted to video tape. I asked for a 6-7'. I didn't want to get the most expensive kind, but was told only the nobles were available (most expensive at $250 for 6-7' flocked - $280 with stand). Well, the kids pulled my tree, pulled the tag and then said it was a 5-6 footer ($189). Since I got my stand at Walmart for $19 vs $39 for the same there, I was okay. I paid, tipped the kids $10 each for their cheery attitude. I didn't pay attention to the charge...til I got home. It was $250. I did not even get my 5% loyalty discount. When I emailed, I was told that I was supposed to give the paper given to me at the entrance reflecting a discount. My bad?? I would have thought the clerk would ask...and then I was up-charged for the wrong size. Sad. I'm not sure if anyone else flocks but since I have to get the tree extra early (last year the trees were on sale after Thanksgiving...next year, it will be Halloween?). I get flocked because my trees for the past couple years never drink up water (they did cut the trunk base though no water was in the base when I picked out my tree); they die, but I don't care as I can't tell because of the flocking. Not to knock this mom&pop company, but even though you might be in the most festive of moods, 1) pay attention to what you are being charged, 2) if you get the discount, and 3) is the tree wrapped in plastic properly, e.g., tied at the base which mine was not--this caused my tree to come out when removing from my car...then needles everywhere). After 2 decades of purchasing my Christmas tree from Tajiri's I am done. The quality of the trees have gone way down hill. Almost every tree on the lot was full of holes. The customer service was horrible. I used to bring my children to this lot for the amazing experience and the beautiful trees. We have been faithful customers, buying trees since my grandmother was alive. As thirty years of business we have been extremely disappointed by our experience this year. Normally, we go to get our trees with wonderful service, choose our tree and pick it up later after it is flocked. This year we were unable to get our tree flocked and had a sales person try to sell us someone else's tree. It was extremely insensitive to those who had preordered trees and to those who are in search of one of their own. The workers at the door and those prepping the trees were kind as usual, the sales people who seem to be administration of this company have changed for the worse. My fiancé and I only buy from Tajiri's ever since we bought our house. They're the best Christmas trees on the island! We usually buy on the weekend of Thanksgiving and the trees literally last through the end of December! Our favorite is the 7/8 footer noble trees, which are perfect in our living room. They just look and smell great! You also have the option to get your trees flocked at Tajiri's, which I think has changed this year, but I personally prefer not to flock them. Don't get me wrong, the trees look so much better with the flock (white of course), BUT they mask the Christmas tree smell. In addition, the workers there are amazing. F this place. I paid over $220 for a tree and asked them to flock it. 1. I waited 1 week and they never called me even though they said they would call me in 3 or 4 days. 2. Not only did they sell my tree to someone else, they tried to pass off this super ugly tree that was balding all over, and told me it was the one I picked. No one would pay $100 for they ugly crap they were trying to sell me. 3. Owner came and told me a sob story about costs of the business and what not. Then told me I have two choices take the ugly tree at full price or leave and get a refund. He said all this with an attitude as if I was the one that was ripping him off. 4. Forget this business and their trees. I wonder how many people they have scammed with this tactic of selling good looking trees and switching them with ugly ones. read more

Came to the lot today because they said their new shipment was in. I needed to get a 3-4ft tree. Walked in the tent and maybe two or three people in line waiting for assistance. The worker wasn't paying attention to who should have been helped first. The lady that was supposed to be helped first told another worker that she was there first and the worker only said sorry and that's it. She continued to wait instead of the worker telling someone to assist her with the tree as she was first. No big deal but, customer service was their downfall today. I asked if I had to wait in line as the workers wouldn't need to pull the tree as the 2ft-4ft trees were already all laid out on the side. My co-worker and I found a good tree, nobody bothered to stop when we were looking for help with the rope holding it together. We stood there untying it to ensure we had the perfect tree. I stood in line while I asked my friend to get assistance with cutting the stump and wrapping the tree. Card machines were running slow but those at the payment tent were nice. Now the other workers.. wow. Horrible. I had a good tip ready for these little things for my 3ft tree. I'm not even asking for someone to carry the dang thing. Just wrap it. The worker gave a stink face and asked if someone was helping us instead of just taking our tree and wrapping it. He seemed like he didn't want to help us at all. Bro, you make money off of tips. I just picked up a Christmas tree for my family. I believe this company has the best selection on island. This was the first year we got a flocked tree and it was very well worth it. I think every year I will get a flocked tree although it does cost extra. The pines don't fall as much and it keeps the tree alive longer they say. This year you have to make an appointment and it's a drive thru selection so you don't have much choice. They also brought in a limited supply so all the good tress sold out fast. There was a bit of a line and a wait despite making an appointment. Make sure you are on their mailing list too so you can get the ten percent off. I had to go down the first day just to make an appointment since the phone lines were so busy. Best place in town to get a tree with selection and flocked which is highly recommended! read more

The owner (I'm assuming is Mr. Tajiri) helped my sister and her husband in finding the perfect Christmas tree. He was really nice and friendly and explained where he gets the trees, and so forth. My family loves Tajiri's. Every year, we get our tree from no place else but them, which makes it even more disappointing to share this rating and our bad experience for 2017. This year Tajiri's was at Mo'ili'ili and it was just horrible. It was enormously packed and while the number system made sense, the way they executed it did NOT. Every year, when it used to be at Pearlridge, we would come and wait in line at one of the people bringing out trees. When it was our turn, the person would bring us a tree and we would look at it, then give them a yes or no, and they'd pull another one if it was a no. When we found a "yes," then it would be the next person's turn. This year, that system was not used and it made for the MOST frustrating experience. We waited for our number to be called, and then we were served by someone pulling trees, an older man I've never seen before. He pulled us a tree, told us to hold it and he left us. Instead of letting us decide whether we wanted it or not, he rushed to help another ticket number. This is NOT the way it should be done! You cannot expect everyone to like the first tree that's pulled! And if you help another person, you should come *back* to check on the family you initially pulled for! Instead, the man kept pulling a tree then asking for the next number, then pulling a tree for those people, then asking for the next number, and so on and so forth. Anyone can see that this system doesn't make sense and is just going to complicate things. And it did. It didn't take us long to decide that we didn't want the first tree pulled for us, (the top third of it was incredibly bushy and bulbous while the bottom was more normal) so we laid it to the side and waited for the man to come back but he never did. In order to get them to pull another tree we had to wait again--behind other people being served who were in line after us! It took such a long time, those other people were leaving with their trees already! We ended up flagging a different person down to explain that our number had been called way earlier, we just need another tree pulled. This time a younger gentleman helped, and he actually stayed with us (thank you!) He held the tree while we decided, and also moved the tree to the drilling area. If he hadn't helped us, when exactly was that older man going to come back? Even if we had liked that first tree, there was no one to tell that to, no one to help us move it. Either Tajiri's needs to change their procedure back to the way it was before or inform all of their workers of how it should be done (that old man in particular.) You cannot keep on pulling number after number after number when people haven't decided if they want the tree or not. If it's going to be like this from now on, I don't see the value in coming all the way from Makaha to keep getting Tajiri trees. Westsiders are better off just going to Home Depot. read more

Thirty or so years ago, Richard Tajiri (originally from Maui, a restaurateur ) and two of his his auto mechanic friends decided to try and make some extra holiday money. Tajiri came up with the idea of selling Christmas trees. After bringing in three thousand trees, and their first Christmas in business, the two partners decided it wasn't worth all the work that went into it. Everything in Hawaii is twice as hard to accomplish than in most States. The politics makes it difficult. I know many who have attempted businesses and failed. Thank goodness Tajiri was persistent. Thanks to his yearly visits to the best farms in the Pacific Northwest and hand picking each tree for our islanders each year, we are blessed with the best! If your the particular type then you probably know of this Christmas tree lot. The trees sat at Sears Ala Moana parking lot for decades (this was before Ala Moana got designer). It is now located at at the old Varsity theater parking lot. The trees are the best the island has to offer. It's hard to get a bad looking one. Each tree is perfectly symmetrical, very fresh, the scent of Christmas is prevalent. We have been getting our tree through Tajiri's for years. If you sign up for their loyalty program, they will offer you a ten percent discount on your future visits. The Tajiri's make it hard to get a tree from anywhere else. read more

Great experience. Everyone there was extremely helpful. Even when we were waiting for our trees, several other employees kept checking on us to be sure we were helped and ok. There are mainly three types of trees- Noble, Douglas and Grand. All trees are from Snowhomish, Washington State. Trees come to Hawaii frozen, so when they pulled our tree out of the truck, it was fresh, frosty and smelled amazing. Selecting a tree can be difficult, but they make the process easy. They ask you a few questions- Does having a strong or mild smell matter? Skinny or full? Height? Otherwise they show you the types of trees and then jump in a large truck to pick you out options to show. Don't feel pressured if you don't like the one the take out... they just put it aside and find another one. They also help you tie it to your vehicle and send you off securely. Don't forget to bring cash for a tip. Otherwise they do take credit card for payment. Base stands can be an additional $20-$25 depending on the size of your tree. read more

4 hours! I know I'm dumb to have waited.... I want to say the workers were extraordinary... Short staffing and poor management were to blame. There was no method.... Just no care for customers when it was brought up to management. I haven't gotten the tree yet... I hear they're awesome. Totally unorganized. There are only two lines for the trees... One for nobles and one for everything else. 1 hour and still another hour waiting probably for the noble. Workers sitting in the containers with the trees and no one helping customers get the trees. We've been customers for years. Not anymore. We were at the lot on Sunday and one of the employees took our name and number because we wanted a 5 foot Douglas Fir and they said that size was all out and a container was arriving on Wednesday. They called us Tuesday morning to say the 5 foot Douglas Firs are in and I said we'd be there that evening. When we got there they said it's still in the container and its in the middle so will be coming out later maybe Wednesday or Thursday. We left and I called and talked to the owner, Richard Tajiri. He said they don't even bring in any Douglas Fir trees because the weather in Hawaii is so bad that the needles fall off. I told him a few of his employees said they have it otherwise we wouldn't have come back and that they called to say it was in. If he has no 5 foot Douglas Fir trees I don't know why he has a price list showing the 3 different types of trees and the prices and the Douglas Fir was on the price list. I told him he should tell his employees that they need to tell the customers they don't have Douglas Fir trees and he said they didn't say that. There were 4 of us at the tree lot that heard them tell us the 5 foot Douglas Firs will be in on Wednesday. They even told us on Tuesday that the 5 foot Douglas Firs are in the middle of the container. He then proceeded to call me a liar. This was so unprofessional. All he had to say was I'm sorry I'll let my employees know, rather than call a customer with witnesses, a liar. I know so many businesses that are personal friends if mine who buy for their large homes trees from him, Hawaii is a small place and the people do not like being called liars. I told him I bought trees from him when he first came here and he was a small operation. I bought a tree from him in 1992 when my first daughter was born and we had it flocked with pink and it was a beautiful tree. We get their post card every year since and I guess big business has got to his head. I already told my sister who is in charge of having the tree delivered to her bosses house because it's such a big tree and they will not be buying from him next year. He is from the mainland and I guess he just doesn't understand Hawaii's custom of being polite to the customer. I've so many more business people to tell how we were treated directly by Richard Tajiri and they will most certainly not buy again next year. I'm just sorry he let big business get to his head. Update 11/30/19 - Richard TAJIRI is a liar. In my post previously he fought with me because his worker told me the Douglas Firs are not out of the container yet and when I called to talk to Richard TAJIRI he said they don't carry Douglas firs and they hadn't carried it for a long time but he just advertised he had them. I have been purchasing my Xmas tree from Tajiri's for over decade and it seems like their lack of organization gets worst every year. Like last year, we arrived and got a ticket. Ours said #12. I checked in w/ the cashier to see what the process is. I was told to "go stand in line and listen for my number." I go stand in the crowd and watch as a few young men off load some trees from the container. A young woman then comes in front of the crowd and tells us that she will be helping those with numbers in the "60s, 70s, & 80s." Then asked for everyone else to move back. She also noted "if you can't wait, you can come back Wednesday." She explained that another shipment will arrive on Wednesday if those who she did not call wanted to return then. If this was my business, I would want to move my product ASAP. There was a lot of loud noise from the generators, sawing, people, etc. so she was basically yelling at all the customers. So, there was ONLY ONE PERSON CALLING NUMBERS but, once your number is called, you go up, choose a tree, then go see another woman who writes up your purchase ticket so you can check out/ pay for your tree. Luckily, another worker was nice enough to help me pick a tree and purchase it without waiting hours for my number to be called. Tajiri's seriously needs to revamp their "system" because it ain't working. Every customer in there was grumbling about how not-smart their system was and I also heard many of them say they will NOT be returning next year. read more

We came here for the past six years and had fun look for our tree. This year we waited in a long line over an hour to Finally have a chance to grab our two trees that We always get every year. One of the two trees stand out the most. It was so beautiful and had both of them heavy flocked. Waited for two days for someone to call me and I'm a third day went down there could not wait any longer to find out one of our trees was missing. Someone took off the tag and the staff could not find it. They help me to find anther tree but it was not the same. I paid over $500 for both. The quality of the stuff has gone down . Something needs to be done with better security of the trees that have been paid for I'm pretty sure I'm not the first and won't be the last on incidents like this. Last week I went and prepaid for a 7' flocked Nordman (a tradition that our family usually gets) and told them that I'll pick it up next week or when they call when it's ready. At purchase, we leave two numbers, house and cell. I received no calls or messages throughout the week and so I decided to call this morning. When I asked if my tree was ready, the lady said yes it's ready... 10 minutes later I get a call back. "We don't know where your tree is at. Your tree was ready a long time ago. " "The girls left several messages." I asked do you have any Nordmans left?... "No we're all out." "We deal with hundreds of trees and you're the first that this has happened to." He offered a 5% discount... Smh I guess I'm just another customer to them. TL:DR Pre-paid for tree, got no call when it was ready. When I called for status, tree went missing, 5% discount for an apology. read more

Due to the epic and frustratingly ill-timed demolition of Sear's Ala Moana, Tajiri's was forced to relocate from this location to a more off-the-beaten path parking lot on University Avenue. No matter, the quality of service, trees and price points remain outstanding. We've been long-time fans of Tajiri's, and this year was on-par with previous experiences. We went yesterday to buy our annual Christmas tree. The staff was helpful and accommodating. They showed us several trees, including a few from the Matson containers (that, to me, is going the extra mile, whereas they could have tried to sell us a tree that had been on display for awhile). We chose a gorgeous, bushy, deep green, 4' tree, a wreath, tree stand and wreath hook. Because the short trees were on sale ($20), the entire purchase was only $64! Even better, before loading the tree into our car, the guy put it on a shaker machine thing that shook off all the loose needles. We have been buying our Christmas trees from Tajiri for at least 10 years now. The guys are the most helpful and are very patient. They will get a tree from the container until you are satisfied and they do not rush you. But, you just stand there and wait until someone ackowledges you. I had to ask another customer if they had been helped and they said no. Guys walking past you. Parking is terrible since this year they have only one location at the University. It's super difficult, especially if you come with your 4x4 truck. Good luck finding a parking spot. They need to find another location. Price went up since there is a shortage on trees. We got a 6-7' Grand Tree for $82. If you are on their mailing list, you get 10% off if you show their discount card. $60 for regular flock and if you want the flock colored, add on another $36. FYI - they are backlogged on flocking because of the weather. Estimated time is 7-10 days to get your tree if you want add-ons. The lady who rang me up was terrible. No greeting and no smile. No customer service skills. She asked a customer behind me if she was in line to pay. She said yes. Lady responded, there is only one line and points where the register is. I looked at the customer and said, I see only one line. There were only 3 of us in line?? Now the lady looks at me and asked if I was paying by card. I said card, and hands out her hand. She took my card and rang me up. No questions asked if I had add-ons. She just overheard me and my husband discussing that we was going with the heavy flock. By then, she had the receipt for me to sign. Now, if you have add-ons, onward you will go to the gal over to the right. As she was logging down my info, she asked heavy or regular flock? As I answered, heavy flock....then answered, and the color pink. The lady who rang me up overheard, and said....I didn't charge you for flock. She looked at my receipt and said, oh yes I did. But I didn't charge you for the color. By then, we said forget it, we will just go with what we paid for. The gal who was logging my info down was sweet and apologized. Very very disappointed with the lady's customer service. We were lucky to have the guy wait patiently with our tree until we were paid and ready to leave. read more

Best place to get your christmas tree(s). I know there were a lot of complaints this year because of the shortage of trees. We were lucky and went an hour before they were closing for the day. We got in and out within half an hour. Their trees never disappoint. They last well past the new year. Full and scented. If money is an object, then this isn't the place for you. But, you do get what you pay for. Tajiri's trees are full of life and last a while. I highly suggest shopping here for a tree next year. But go early, because he runs out fast. Another great tip is give them your address, they send out 10% off coupons. The customer service is great. We have never had a bad experience with them. If you are planning to go there, have patience. They are humans just like you. read more
