Idle time can sometimes be your friend. After paying a visit to the next door walgreens to pick up medication on a very rainy day, we decided to pass the time by stopping on into Richards Variety store. I've passed by Richards several times over the last year, and had zero clue what it was. What it is is a shop that collects and sells to you several off the wall nick knacks you really can't find any place else. We came just before 6 and didn't realize that the store was about to close. They started to turn the lights out but we were told 'oh no, stay as long as you like, thank you for coming'. I did think that was cool, although as I glance at the prior reviews, i'm a bit shocked that there were issues with kindness here. With that said my experience was only a one time 15 minute visit. I ultimately purchased a "swiss army hammer" for about $17, which was calling my name since I saw it in the store. There were other very cool things worth purchasing, but time caught up to us. Parking at Richards is pretty easy, considering parking is shared at the Peachtree Battle shopping center lot. Again, customer service was nice and didn't rush us at all, which was very cool. Definitely worth taking a stroll up and down the aisles to spend time looking for, well, anything!

I am rarely on this side of town, but recently stopped here on the way back home in an effort to avoid the big box stores for a small item I need for a repair. Shep's turned out to be the exact place I needed it to be and I was able to scoop up what I was after and head home without stopping anywhere else! When you first arrive you may see parking as limited and street only, but given their location and attachment to the next door market, they share a covered parking garage that provides you plenty of parking! But if street parking is your thing, there is plenty of that as well. When I arrived, I was greeted immediately by an associate who promptly took me to the aisle I needed and helped me find the product. He was very friendly and helpful on the floor and then escorted me to the registers in the back to ring me up when I was ready. In between the goods and the register, I did walk around and explore a little and I was impressed with their selection of items, the flow of the store and the overall cleanliness as well. Overall, this is a solid neighborhood Ace Hardware. While it sadly not in my neighborhood, I certainly could see myself swinging back in if the need ever arises again, until then I will happily recommend Shep's to my friends in this area of town!

It can be seen from regular traffic. They offer plastic free packaging. Shopping is a pleasure here, kudos to staff and a management.

During my visit, it seemed everywhere I turned, an employee was there to greet me and ask me if I needed anything. As I approached the key stand to get some keys cut, there were two employees ready to help. Shout-out to super-friendly Sahil for proactively asking me about my keys as soon as I pulled them out of my pocket. She let me know what my options were and I chose to have three standard keys cut at $2.98 each. Three total rang up to $9.74 after tax. Sahil told me this is the "fun" Ace Hardware and I could see why. The staff trended younger and more "hip." I'm a fan of Ace Hardware in general because each store feels like a small, local, and unique business. This one especially so. It's popular among locals with a strong sense of neighborhood and community. And, like other city Ace Hardware stores, it was densely-packed with all sorts of useful hardware and garden items. If you've never visited this location before, be sure to check out the beautiful plant room. They have a good selection of plants and a big wall of seeds. They even sell King of Pops here. Limited free parking is available on-site. I visited during a peak time and was able to snag a spot. If no spots are available, just park on Drewry St NE (also free). The lot is reserved for Intown Ace customers only.

The lot is tight and hectic, and I've actually had my car door hit while parked, which immediately set a negative tone for my visits. Inside, experiences with staff have been inconsistent. The front desk employees seem somewhat engaged, but not fully. On one visit, a staff member confidently directed me to an item, only for me to return and ask again--at which point they looked it up and told me it was on the opposite side of the store. Unfortunately, they still didn't have what I needed, and that scenario has happened more than once. Over time, those repeated issues led me to stop shopping at this particular location. I genuinely like the Lowe's brand overall and have had much better experiences at other stores--this one just hasn't met the same standard for me.

Generally, I've found the folks at Ace to be more accessible, knowledgeable, and helpful than those at the bigger stores. Shep's Midtown Ace is no exception. Shep's Midtown Ace opened in January 2015. I watched from across the street, from inside my dentist's office, as this place came together. It's certainly one of the nicest-looking Ace stores I've seen to date, especially in terms of its facade. Like other urban and in-town Ace stores, they efficiently pack a lot of useful inventory into the store. This one has two levels. The store is located at the corner of Juniper and 7th. Free parking is located inside the deck next door. Enter via Juniper. You don't need to enter any of the gated areas inside the deck. There are street-level spots reserved for Ace customers that will be on your right just after entering the deck. You don't need to grab a parking ticket or anything. I came here needing a tool to replace a recessed light bulb in a high/vaulted ceiling (about 14 feet high). Shortly after I entered the store, an employee greeted me and asked me if I needed help finding anything. I told him what I needed and he told me exactly where I could find it in the lighting section upstairs. The bulb changing kit has a telescoping pole that extends to 11 feet and three attachments: one for recessed and track lighting (a suction), one for standard incandescent bulbs, and one for floodlights. It cost $27.21 after tax which I thought was a little pricey, but not excessive (otherwise, I wouldn't have bought it). I was satisfied with my experience and will definitely return. I like this and the other Ace Hardware near me (Bates Ace Hardware on Howell Mill) about the same. They're both good.
