Heard about Rick's Barbershop from a friend. Said they were fast and cheap which stays true in 2025. Most barbershops around the city will run you $50+ for a cut, but here they keep it simple with just a barebones two seater shop and equipment connected to a long cord from the wall. Price breakdown: $31.00 for "style" cut - I assume with product? (the small sign just says "fauxhawk, combover, etc) $25.00 for a regular cut - I assume without product? $16.00 for beard They don't do appointments so you just have to try your luck. I ended up coming on a Thursday morning, probably about 30 minutes after they opened. 2 Filipino barbers inside and no wait. I didn't get the guy's name, but I got the older Filipino barber with longer hair, who has a seat farthest from the door. I used one of my saved photos for reference to try to explain the cut I wanted, which is a low-drop fade and texturize the top, but I tried to explain it simpler by saying a low-taper on the sides and cut the top just a bit. The barber seemed to understand and got cutting. While sitting the chair it seemed like things were going well. He brought out what looked like some huge hedge sheers to start cutting the top which was something new. I think at this point he was free styling at the end because he combed my hair back similar to a slick-back hairstyle and asked what I thought. It wasn't something I asked for and just tried to style it how I'm used to which looked okay while looking in the mirror there. Overall, cut took maybe 20 minutes to finish. Gives you a short shoulder massage too. Went home, showered, and looked at the results in the mirror. The sides turned out okay, but you could clearly see on the left side, he cut it uneven. Right side, looked a bit cleaner and blended in. I wish he was able to lighten the top a bit more with thinning scissors. Cut itself is average, but the price can't be beat. I probably don't qualify to write a review of this place because I didn't get a haircut there. I was walking past the shop and it looked like a place where I could get what I call a "regular haircut". Old style barber looking place. I went in and immediately felt like they didn't want my business. It appears to be a place that caters to regulars, I was only in there a few minutes but the atmosphere was sort of hostile. When I came in the door I got a look like what do you want? I said could I get a haircut? and I sat down to wait. I know this sounds paranoid but there was something going on there that was indefinable. the barbers took people who had come in after I came in. From the barbersconversation with these newcomers it didn't seem like they had appointments. after awhile I just up and left and no one seemed to notice. I'm an older, traditional looking white guy and I don't know if that had anything to do with itbut I was glad to get out of there, and I think the barbers were glad to see me go. I hadn't said anything while I was in there except to ask to say that I wanted to get a haircut. As I say, I know this sounds paranoid but I know a bad vibe when I'm in the middle of one. Great neighborhoody, old-school barbershop in the Central Richmond. $25 for a regular cut, and it opens early. I just show a phot on my phone of the cut I want, and walk out with a wife-approved haircut. Added bonus is the electric neck and shoulder massage right after the cut. The haircut was good, but I felt they could do better when it comes to cleanliness and hygiene. They cut the hair and sweep it to the side. The floor is always full of hair. I can live with that, but using on me the same towel they used on the previous customer is where I draw the line. They use two small towels on you. One clean and one from the previous client. If you decide to go, watch which towel they put in the dirty bin and which one they throw to the back of the clean stack and reuse on the next customer. read more

Ricks is really one of the few or not 1 out of 3 old school Filipino barbershop places. Dicks International Barbershop who are technically the sister-site of the place is just down the block. All in all this place really does the trick for those who don't mind old school style haircuts such mid or hi fades. They do indeed do scissor over comb as well and do a foam and shave after the cut. They also do the machine massager in the end of the cut which is perfect after sitting straight for a while but comes in clutch for me because I work a blue collar job and fight amateur. The cost now is $26 which fairly cheap in my opinion and worth it as long it's your style of cuts. If indeed you have a weird face shape and you don't want any of the two barbers cutting your hair to where it begins rounding with your head shape then let it be known. Mind you it's an old school set up If you feel you need a haircut that needs tons of attention and very particular with everything then this place is not for you. If you need a mid-high skin fade and thin out the top and keep the length then This is the place for you. Time to go would be weekday literally during opening or mid day 12-1pm. Love the cuts and service they provide. I usually get a mid-high or high skin fade here, and they accomplish that very well in about 20-25 minutes. I also appreciate the massager they use at the end because sometimes I really felt that tension I didn't even know I had disappear. Coming here during mid-day of the week is the perfect time. Their hours are from 8AM-6PM. Saturday's are their busiest day of the week. Guys like me line up at 7:30AM to be the 1st in and 1st out. Rick's Barbershop or Rick's Butcher shop? Found this place on Yelp and visited because of the reviews - huge disappointment. Run far, far away. I came in here earlier for a cut, was very specific with what I asked for - 3 on the sides and back, cut an inch off the top. Nothing crazy. I didn't get anything close to that. In fact, Rick doesn't own any guards - you know that thing you put on the top of the blade of the shaver to make sure you're getting a consistent cut? Yeah, he's just eyeing it, praying for the best. The top of my head was even worse - completely inconsistent across my head. I had to spend 2 hours at home just now trying to fix this nonsense. All I can do now is hole myself in my home until it hopefully grows out so I can try again somewhere else. Good thing it's covid times and I have an excuse for canceling plans. I'm not sure if it's incompetence, laziness, or just a lack of talent - but this ain't it folks. read more

I converted from hair salons to barbershops recently. Before I came here, I was worried the atmosphere would be too "broy". Turns out, Rick is super friendly and just generally a good guy who enjoys what he does & does it well. Be sure to do your homework and figure out the cut you want beforehand. Get acquainted with lingos like taper, nape, arch...etc, and learn how to specify the texture & sideburn style you want. This is not the kind of place where you flip through fashion magazines and have a style consultation. If you want that, go to a regular salon. Got my hair cut and out of the door in 15 minutes. Reminds me of the barbershops near base I used to go to for my weekly head-mowing when I was in the military (in a good way). Services are inexpensive with haircuts at $16 and beard trims at $9. Definitely not the place to go for the latest intricate hipster hairstyle but they do a great job as long as what you want is more traditional. Only reason why I don't give them five stars is their hours aren't great if you work full time and the wait can get long. They're only open 8-5 weekdays and 8-3 on Saturdays.
