Rick is great as is hia team. Rock's is really expensive, but nearly as expensive as having poor quality work done on your Mercedes and having to get it done over .. or worse. This is your top shop if you need work done on any Mercedes on Santa Cruz county, let alone on anything vintage. Save yourself the worry, go to Rick. Willie (one of his long-term mechanics) has helped me several times when I have been time pressured. I started going to Rick when the warranty on my first Mercedes expired. More than 10 years and two cars later I wouldn't take my car anywhere else. If he ever threatens to retire I will seriously consider chaining him and Willy to the shop. He knows everything there is to know about Mercedes cars, is a straight shooter you can trust and he could probably charge way more than he does. Just don't tell him that. read more

Don't bring your car here! My wife and I had a really bad experience with Rick that we have to share. We brought our s500 in for minor repairs (water damage to a control unit) on Christmas Eve. It was three weeks later before it was completed; he took a vacation then was sick. That's not really an issue, though, really because we had an alternate car (would have been a disaster if we didn't). The problem was when my wife called to ask if it was ready he was super rude to her and told her the car was about to be put into lien sale! Now, granted I was 3 days late when I went in after that call to pick it up, but he had the paper work filled out and was charging $75.00/day for storage STARTING THE DAY I COULDN'T COME IN TO PICK IT UP and sent a letter in the mail rather than calling us to let us know about all this!! When I picked the car up he showed me a bogus container of dirt that was supposedly taken out of the drain gutters; just so happens I know soil engineering by trade and I know for a fact what he showed me didn't come out of my car! Avoid this shop at all costs but if you have to go there watch out! read more

Rick and his assistant (will?) are great! Before my extended warranty was about to run out, they went all over the car and made me a list of things to have fixed that would be covered by the warranty. I took it to the dealer who said they would charge me a "shop hour" to confirm the list - unless the list was correct - then no charge...well guess what... DUH... this list was correct and the dealer had my car 4 days replacing the items that Rick pointed out. Hate to think what the would have cost me to fix post-warranty. Now that my warranty is up however, I will be dealing only with Ricks Mercedes. A GREAT local dependable mechanic. read more

Rick and Willy were extremely helpful in getting me on the road in my 79 300sd turbo diesel. I was traveling from LA to Seattle and needed some dialing in before I wanted to continue. I called and told them my issues with the car and came in the next day. These two are a great team and it was like watching surgeons at work. I am a big fan of Rick and Willy's expertise and customer service. Independent repair shops (versus dealerships) may get a bad rap due to inexperience, non-Mercedes Benz parts, non-Mercedes Benz diagnostic tools, etc, but Rick's Mercedes Works does not apply. They did a phenomenal job diagnosing my issues, repairing them with Mercedes Benz parts, and explaining the intricacies of my 2005 CLK320. All this at a reasonable price. I recommend Rick's shop to anyone with a Mercedes, any Mercedes. He is capable of handling any repair you might require whether it be mechanical, electrical, structural, restoration, anything and everything. Most of the time, I can describe a symptom and Rick from his years of experience, explains the problem and what will be needed to repair it. No surprises. Another great thing Rick does is save people money. He knows that when he is in there doing a repair on one thing, he can renew or restore parts nearby that are also likely in need of repair or replacement which saves people a substantial labor cost. Being a Mercedes owner himself makes me confident that Rick has the same appreciation for this very fine automobile and had he not the years of experience to maintain his own fleet, he would want to receive the same service that he gives. Most importantly, Rick knows most of us are on a budget and he is creative and resourceful to both repair the vehicle and also provide the most value. Rick is a great guy and knows his stuff. I took my SL500 in for a transmission service that another repair shop told me was not required. Rick told me of issues of not having the transmission serviced on older "sealed for life transmissions" just as I had learned from internet forums. When I picked up the car he gave me a very detailed report of all he had done, even going as far as installing a magnet in the pan to pick up any stray metal shavings. His shop is neat and clean and he definitely gave me a sense of confidence, unlike other repair shops I have been to. I consider myself very particular with who I let work on my car. My (classic) Mercedes Benz cars have been taken care of by Rick as far back as 2007 (1989 190e, my current 1983 300TD wagon). Rick and Willy are Mercedes specialists. My best friend once worked for Rick, a knowledgable Mercedes mechanic, who confirmed that they know their stuff. As has been said before me, Willie is personal driver and big fan of the w124 models. What I like about going to Rick is how he explains the situation and gives good consideration into what jobs are worth doing and when. Although not a cheap shop, you get great, open guidance and communication about the options. Jobs are done the right way, which spells for "more miles, more smiles". Often times, Rick will have second hard parts to use conveniently from his own collection (when appropriate), which can come in handy for more classic cars - paying the same as you would pay to go find the part yourself at a junkyard. You will find Rick dawn the fitting white lab coat for his length of experience and codependent excellent with his right hand man, Willie. I also appreciate the sense of realism from Rick, talking about a cars safety, reliability, etc., as well as his subtle sense of humor. Willie is a bit more of a talker (except when working unwaveringly with the boss, Rick) and his personal enthusiasm perhaps shines through more for classic Mercedes. I have been taking my Mercedes to Ricks for 15 years now. I have taken my older S320, CL500, CLK230, CLK320, and my newer AMG CLS550 and even my totally awesome Brabus S600 (twin turbo V12). Previous review is right, Ricks has all the latest training and software need to work on vintage models all the way to these latest high tech models. They are always honest, get genuine parts from Mercedes, and explain what they are doing. They will not do gratuitous fixes if un-needed (eg, the frivolous Service B replace interior air filter - sure needs replacing every 6 months if you are driving through Saudi Arabia, but not here). Beware, they are not the fastest, they are not the cheapest, they will not have a loaner car for you, they will not sell you tires, they dont wash your car for you, there is no free coffee, and Rick does take holidays off and also has the flu now and then ike anyone. If you want all that go to Smythe and pay alot more. But he and Willie know what they are doing. I am so glad to have this kind of shop in my home town! read more
