I sat on my husband's very expensive Ray Ban sunglasses and broke the arm. I lost the arm and the screws. The arm broke off where you couldn't just screw it back on. For the past several years I've been trying to find comparable Ray Ban glasses without any luck. The lens on the glasses that broke are very special. Vision Works said they coulnd't fix my glasses and tried to sell me a whole new pair of frames and lenses since my frame is somehow discontinued even though I bought them a year ago. The screw that holds the lens of the wife's glasses in snapped in half. I called up Rick and he said he would be able to take care of it. I brought them to him and he said give me 20 minutes. Beware the dueling banjos. For real, the whole situation is a little weird- dogs barking, he does the repairs in his basement, and he met me at his back door in shorts and a ragged t-shirt. That said, when your glasses are busted and it's two weeks til your new ones come and the tape isn't sticking, it's well worth the $20 and general uneasiness to have this guy patch 'em up for you. I dropped them off and came back a half hour later and he'd welded the titanium-alloy bridge back together *and* color matched it to the rest of the frames. It's not an impressive storefront, no. Rick works out of his home and has nice dogs, yes. And his service is magical. I broke the temple on my glasses, right by the hinge, I was told the frame could not be repaired, and I cannot function without my glasses for even a few hours. I called Rick to inquire about a repair at 8:30 am on a Monday, I stopped by at 10 am, and I had my glasses back well before 11 am. My glasses had broken by the hinge and was told it wasn't repairable and would need new glasses. I looked for the same frames and they were discontinued. Luckily i came across Rick on yelp and gave him a call. He suggested i send it to him via mail instead of me driving all the way to him. Quality repair for a very fair price! Rick was able to quickly and neatly fix the arm of my antique eyeglasses; it was lovely to find a microwelding specialist so near to my home! His shop is in the finished basement of his South Elgin home and his little squadron of bichon frises heralded my arrival and departure...same as when I visit anyone's home who has dogs, which I did not find off-putting in the very least. My husband's frames broke this week. He was desperate to get them fixed as he needs them to work and read. Fortunately, our search yielded Rick's Welding & Eyeglass Repair nearby! We called him and he got us right in. It was fascinating watching Rick repair these frames. They are about 8 years old, were worn thin and becoming weak. They had been repaired a couple other times where we used to live. That complicated things, but Rick is a professional with decades of experience. He was able to remove the old soldering, repair, clean and adjust the frames in about 40 minutes. They are like new! They look great and feel strong and secure again. When the frame of my favorite pair of vintage Persols broke a week before my vacation, I found Rick's place online. Like the previous reviewer, it was a weird experience - his place is out in the middle of residential Elgin, in the basement of his house (and yes, with dogs constantly barking). At the time, none of that really bothered me - if you're good at what you do, I'll drive just about anywhere, and could care less about the look and setup of your shop. Unfortunately, I can't say that Rick is good at what he does. The repair required welding and/or soldering, but he didn't even think to remove the lens out of the frame before putting the torch to it! Needless to say, he burned the lens (which is polarized and multicoated glass - and according to Persol, not replaceable), and thought nothing of it when he handed them back to me. On top of that, the chrome on the frame was also discolored, and the seam was very sloppy - like he just dropped some solder on there and just let it cool. If I haven't made it clear - he totally ruined my sunglasses. So, if you have a pair of cheapo glasses that you absolutely need fixed asap, Rick may be your guy. But if you have a nice pair of specs that mean anything to you - STAY AWAY. read more

I went to America's Best to get my glasses repaired, but they told me they would be unable to do it and I would have to buy a new pair of glasses. I was able to send Rick a picture of my broken glasses and he quickly got back to me stating that he would be able to fix them! In addition to this, I only paid about 20$ for the repair and he even shipped them to my home, so that I don't have to drive all the way out to south Elgin! I had a pair of old prescription sunglasses that I use for work around the house. Well, they spent a winter in the snow and were found in the spring. A bit bent but I managed to adjust & still use. They finally broke at the bridge & lens. So I called to where I had gotten them. No can't get a replacement frame- no longer made. So I searched the internet and found Rick. My girlfriend's Titanium framed glasses broke and we called a few places to see about getting them fixed. Most places wanted to charge us $300 for a new pair and told us they couldn't get fixed. One jewelry shop downtown quoted us $100 to spot weld them, but since the break in the frame was near the lens, they couldn't promise a fix. So I took a chance and went by Rick's. Sure he has his business in his house, with dogs barking in the yard, big burly guy, came out and said he can fix them while we waited on a swing in his yard. It was a nice spring day so why not? Came out about 30 minutes later, good as new, even added nose pads and a nice case free of charge, all for $35. I am and must be the worst person with glasses I have had Rick repair my frames 5 different times, Keeping in mind that through all my sitting on falling asleep with my glasses it's always a new break I was amazed after the first time he did my repair and I broke them again I was certain the repair he made had given way and after I inspected my frame I was very surprised to see his repair held up through my poor handling. I just saw this review bored here today and though I have been a customer of Rick's since 2010 I just had to say amazing working every time no short cuts with this guy. i recently had a pair of glasses repaired by rick. it was a good experience, I heard no dogs barking and he was very personable and has a sense of humor. even if there were barking dogs its his house and dogs do bark. the work was very good on an intricate arm that has a lattice type of connection to the frame. when he was done they were as good as new and completely adjusted to the original form. he is truly an American craftsmen. the prices are very reasonable and the work is excellent. read more
