I was in Oakland and I was really craving some churros this guy popped up on my Yelp and decided why not. First off you got people lined up, waiting to get their churros and I can see why, he makes them right on the spot so they're nice and hot. I asked the guy how much and I asked for the 5 dollar bag. The churros here are by far the best churros you will ever have, trust me. They are even better than the ones in Mexico. I don't even know how much they are just 'cause when we go we tell the churro man to give us $3 dollars worth and he loads up a bag full of them. They're warm and crispy and are perfectly cooked on the inside (no gooeyness, which I hate). He can be found everyday after 4:30pm and I believe he leaves at 8:00pm, he never makes it until 8 though because he runs out of them...Sometimes he switches locations, but we've found him here for sure on the weekends. Difficult to find, but def. worth it! I was expecting a sign on the churro stand, but no sign. You literally just gotta spot him in front of a silver cart/stand. Not to mention, he is a very, very friendly. *NOTE: it does get greasy... For $5, he stuffs a brown, sandwich bag FULL of these crispy, golden, sugary, delicious bites. It is enough to satisfy 4 people (easily). If you're going solo, think about ordering less. ...also as a general rule with fried foods, it's not good to reheat, so try to finish the entire bag before it gets cold. Rico's Churro is a humble one man operation with an outdoor fryer. It's a very simple setup. He has one plastic bucket with steaming freshly made batter. Rico takes the batter, spoons the batter into a giant churro injector, and injects the churro batter into the bubbling fryer. A churro takes about 3-5 minutes to cook. Rico's Churro might be one of the best churros I've had. It's airy light with an incredibly crispy interior and gooey slightly undercooked interior. The exterior is so crispy it sounded like I was eating chips. The color is perfectly golden. Rico doesn't roll the churro in that much sugar and cinnamon so it isn't too sweet, but I bet you can ask him to double coat it if you want. And get this, one bagged churro is only $1! It's a long ass churro at that. The only downside is that right after you gleefully chomp through your entire freshly made churro, your mouth will be filled with the stale aftertaste of cooking oil. Then regret and broken promises will fill your mind and soul. But, eating these churros once a year isn't a bad thing. And these churros are what dreams are made of. I came all the way to Oakland, just to find the parking lot empty (and it was during the above mentioned hours). When he is there, he's very friendly and will give you a whole bag of freshly made Churros. :) These are probably the best fresh plain Churros I've had in East Bay. It's really worth coming the way. And they are inexpensive ($2 for a bag of them). You have another stall (that's always there) just about a mile away from here that has more expensive ones, but also has Churros Rellenos if you're into that. I'm happy with the plain ones. I'd recommend Rico's anytime. I hope he gets his own place some day. read more

Rico pumps a curl of thick batter into boiling oil to produce a shatteringly crisp exterior and chewy/gooey interior full of amazingness.
